2 Derek Eland: Being Human at Everest Base Camp Tour package Overview The Rheged Centre is a visitor centre at the northern gateway to the English Lake District, which has a vibrant arts and family events programme as well as shops and cafes and attracts 450,000 visitors a year. Rheged has developed this new multimedia exhibition with the highly respected artist Derek Eland who in April 2016, became the first artist to undertake a 6 week residency at Everest Base Camp, during the summit climbing season. The immersive and thought provoking Being Human at Everest Base Camp exhibition is on display in the award winning Gallery at Rheged until 2 July 2017, after which it is available to tour. The exhibition was initially designed for Rheged s 300 square metre gallery space and has the flexibility to work in Galleries of different sizes and shapes. The exhibition has broad appeal as it is essentially about how people react in an extreme environment and will resonate with audiences with an interest in human stories, arts and culture, travel and adventure, the outdoors and mountaineering. During its run at Rheged from 29 April -2 July 2017 the exhibition is expected to attract 15,000 visitors. It has been featured on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Breakfast News, CNN, the Observer Magazine and many other UK and international publications and media. Everywhere the work is seen it attracts a wide media focus. Background 1.1 Derek Eland Derek Eland is a multimedia artist who creates artworks that connect audiences to the feelings and thoughts of groups of people in stressful or challenging situations. Derek says his work aims to explore what it means to be be human in these circumstances. He collects hand written stories from people using his unique Diary Rooms approach: temporary spaces which invite people to write their thoughts and emotions. Derek used this approach in 2011 when he was an official war artist embedded with British soldiers on the front line in Helmand Province in Afghanistan. This simple premise turns the Diary Rooms into a confessional, and the stories he collects are honest, emotional and moving. 1.2 First artist in residence at Everest Base Camp In 2016 Derek became the first ever Artist in Residence at Everest Base Camp, at over 17,000ft above sea level. Over the 6 week climbing season in April-May 2016 he lived amongst a temporary community of over 1000 people made up of climbers, Sherpas, support workers, medical teams, trekkers and guides. Using his Diary Room concept he collected over 200 hand written stories which he collected and displayed in his Diary Room tent which became possibly the highest altitude art exhibition in history. 1.3 Being Human at Everest Base Camp Exhibition This multimedia exhibition gives visitors the chance to experience first hand this extraordinary exhibition, which has been described in the international press as groundbreaking, moving and engaging. Through the hand written stories Derek collected at Everest Base Camp, and the film and photography he recorded, Derek shares his thought-provoking experience of his 6-week residency.

3 2.0 Specification 2.1 Contents: Over 200 original Diary Room cards written at Everest Base Camp framed and ready to go on the wall. Some of those who took part in the project and wrote their stories went on to die or be injured on the mountain. The families of those who died have given their permission for these stories to be exhibited. People from 24 different countries wrote their stories at Everest Base Camp in April-May 2016 and so the exhibition has enormous international appeal. Approx. 200 original Instax Photographs captured at Everest Base Camp framed and ready to go on the wall Original Diary Room Tent from Everest Base Camp 5 x videos for installation (provided digitally) o Chetna s Story 15minutes long, displayed as a digital projection. Derek was embedded with an expedition which included an Indian climber called Chetna, who not only celebrated her 50 th birthday at Everest Base Camp, but who then summited Everest and was then rescued from the mountain in what was the highest ever mountain rescue. This film recounts her story. o Derek s Story, based on his own video and audio diaries from Everest Base Camp, 18 minutes long, displayed as a digital projection o Puja Ceremony, 8 minutes long, displayed as a digital projection with installation o o Khumbu Glacier, 5 minutes long displayed on 32 inch video capture of Instagram feed on 50 inch television (hung in portrait orientation) Large format (2x1.5m) photographs of Everest base camp printed on Aluminium Dibond with split buttons for easy installation 8 x A2 sized Black and White photographs of Sherpas captured at Everest Base Camp on a 1923 Kodak Vest Pocket Camera in frames. Photographic Light Box and Diary Room image from Everest Base Camp A2 size hand drawn map of Everest Base Camp 2016, framed 3 sets of 12 digital images to display on rotation on flat screen TVs (TVs not supplied) Interpretation panels and captions for the exhibition in English supplied on attractive plywood board. Your Diary Room: the opportunity for visitors to engage with the exhibition by writing down and displaying their own reaction and Everest stories Range of supporting materials to display in cases: o Derek s sketchbook, diary, maps and travel documents (1 case) o Derek s 1923 Kodak Vest Pocket Camera with case, 2 photos and film canisters (1 case) 2.2 Environmental Controls and security The exhibition has no specific requirements for environmental controls other than it must be stored and displayed in a dry, robust interior exhibition space. Venues will be asked to complete a facilities report as part of the hire process. 2.3 Marketing Hire venues will be supplied with digital copies of the following: Exhibition press release Logo and a choice of 12 copyright free images for use to market the exhibition only Promotional film of exhibition (length 2m18s) Editable Design files and assets for Exhibition poster Editable design files and assets for private view invitation Editable design files and assets for exhibition leaflet

4 Suggested film programme to accompany exhibition for venues with a cinema Editable design files and assets to produce very large (40ft) exhibition poster and wayfinding Himalayan Prayer Flags which can be used to decorate and wayfind in your venue Social Media collateral for you to build your own campaign from Note all marketing and publication must be signed off by Rheged. 2.4 Estimated exhibition space: this exhibition can be adapted to a wide variety of galleries and displays in discussion with the artist. Minimum size display area to include all elements of the exhibition is approximately 180 sqm, which includes dark spaces for each film projection plus approximately 45m of hanging space. Alternatively the exhibition could be laid out over a series of rooms. See suggested layout for a space approx. 12 x 16m: 3.0 Fees 3.1 Touring Fee: 9500 (plus VAT), this includes the contents listed above plus liaison with the Rheged curator around the installation of the exhibition in your venue and interpretation (label text and introduction panel) provided by Rheged. This fee is for a hire period of 3 months. Hire period can be extended at an additional cost of 1500 plus vat per month. 3.2 Costs to be met by touring venue: Cost of transport from Penrith to the hire venue and back to Penrith (except when the exhibition travels on to another venue) using an approved shipper. Travel, accommodation and day fee for the artist if help is required for install and opening, and for Rheged Technicians if required. Travel and accommodation for the artist for any talks or lectures, which are provided on a ticket split of 60/40% in the artists favour against a minimum guarantee of 400 Nail to nail insurance

5 Installation costs Press, marketing, additional interpretation Private view Translation and printing of interpretation material for non-english speaking audiences Storage of travel crates and packaging material Provision of AV equipment (5 x tvs, 2x projectors and screens with sound) All plinths, glass/perspex covers, and seating for films 3.3 Support provided from Rheged Assistance with exhibition layout if you provide us with digital version of building plans we will suggest possible layouts for the exhibition Consultation on installation process we will provide complete installation instructions and and will advise on an installation schedule (as a rule we recommend 3 days to install the exhibition, not including your own decoration and preparation of exhibition space. 3.4 What hiring venues are expected to provide A clean, well-managed exhibition space A secure gallery space with its own locks and alarm system which is in use when the space is not open to the public Staffing of the exhibition which must be manned at all times when open to the public, with regular checking of the exhibition.
