X: On February 22, 1980, the United tates Olympic hockey team pulled off one of the greatest upsets in sports history, defeating the oviet Union, (Google Miracle on Ice Video) uring: ivide students into 8 cooperative learning groups. ssign each group a spokesperson and a note taker. ssign each group one of the 7 Habit Question pages in this resource. Have groups brainstorm ideas about the question on a large index card. Give learning groups 5 minutes to brainstorm. fter 5 minutes, the spokesperson of each group should use the group s notes to share thoughts/ideas with the whole group. If students in other groups would like to add to another groups ideas, allow them time to share. fter: Cooperative learning groups should assign one member to compose the group answer on their sheet. The other members feed the writer information and peer check the answer for grammatical errors. The entire group should participate in this process. The entire group must be satisfied with the composed answer. 11 Close ead Notes The Olympics eturn to ussia This is not the first time that ussia has hosted the Olympic Games. Moscow, ussia s capital, hosted the ummer Olympic Games back in The 2014 Winter Games will be held in ochi, ussia. There is a lot of planning and construction that has to be completed before the games. The construction of the Olympic buildings in ochi began in ochi s opening and closing ceremonies will take place in the newly built Fisht Olympic tadium. It seats 40,000 people. The dome-shaped stadium is named after the nearby Fisht Mountain. Those of us watching the games will get a view of Fisht and other mountains in the north and the Black ea in the south. What will ussia do if there is not enough snow? They had a plan from the very beginning. Olympic organizers have been stockpiling snow. They learned their lesson from the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. uring the Vancouver Winter Olympics, temperatures were too warm for snow. Organizers had to truck and fly in snow from nearby mountains. For ochi, organizers gathered up 16 million cubic feet of snow about how much water flows over Niagara Falls in four minutes. They have also used hundreds of snow-blowing machines to collect icycold water from two lakes. They turned that icy-cold water into tons of artificial snow. ecurity is also a top priority for both the Olympic officials and the ussian government. There have been several recent terrorist attacks in ussia. To combat this threat, tens of thousands of security officers have been assigned to ochi. Their job is to make sure the ochi Olympic Games remain peaceful and safe for both the athletes and the spectators. (I.5.3) 1. How are the 1980 ummer Olympics and the 2014 Winter Olympics related? What do they have in common? (I.5.4) & (.5.4) 2. Using context clues from paragraph three, determine the meaning of the word artificial. (I.5.3) 3. What effect has the recent terrorist attacks had on the ochi Winter Games?
