Canada serves notice Jones rolls over first two opponents to grab early lead By JOHN KOROBANIK Eye Opener Writer Whether it s on their minds or not, Jennifer Jones and her Team Canada mates served notice Saturday that they don t intend to leave the Ford World Women s Curling Championship the same way Canada s four-player teams left PyeongChang, South Korea without a medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Jones, third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jill Officer, lead Dawn McEwen, alternate Shannon Birchard and coaches Bryan Cochrane and Elaine Dagg-Jackson rolled over the Czech Republic 11-5 Saturday morning and got by two-time world champion Binia Feltscher of Switzerland 10-5 in the evening. Team Canada outscored a stubborn Team Switzerland 6-1 in the final three ends. We weren t as sharp as we would like to be, Jones said of the game. The ice was a little heavier than our other game, but we played a good second half. Playing two on Saturday, the opening day, it s always busy in this event so it s nice to get two wins under our belt. The teams traded singles in the first two ends, Switzerland stole one in the third, but Canada got two in the fourth. They traded singles through the next three ends before Jones made a pivotal last-rock hit-and-stick for three in the eighth and a 7-4 margin. We just kept saying let s be patient, let s keep learning (the ice), Lawes said. I was struggling a little bit, making one shot but not both shots early on. Skip Anna Hasselborg and her Olympic gold-medal Team Sweden continued their success by winning their opening game 8-2 over Angelina Jensen and Team Denmark. Sweden gave up a steal of one in the first when Hasselborg s last rock draw was heavy, but they came right back with two in the second, a steal of one in three and a deuce in five to take control of their opening game of the championship. Sometimes it takes a miss to get the mind refocused, said Hasselborg, who slammed her broom after the first-end miss. I was not where I wanted to be. I was a little bit unfocused. We talked about it coming into this game, that it will be difficult maybe to go into this first game after the Olympics. When I slammed my broom I think I refocused and after that it was good. The young U.S. team skipped by Jamie Sinclair made their world championship debut with an impressive 8-1 victory over Italy and Japan got by Germany Sinclair, who twice skipped Ontario teams in the Canadian junior championships, blanked the first two ends before they got the opportunity they wanted and jumped on it to score three in the third. They stole two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth. It was the plan to blank the first end, not so much the second, said Sinclair. It s my first world so we just wanted to get out there, play with the crowd, figure out how loud it was going to be. A little bit of a home game. Nice to have a lot of Ottawa people who came up to cheer for us.

3 #WWCC2018 Page 3 Stupid comments good for the game There are plenty of people who would agree with American actress Kirstie Alley when she tweeted during the 2018 Olympic Games: I m not trying to be mean but Curling is boring. There are more people who jumped to the conclusion that Alley just made a stupid comment because she, like so many others, has no clue about the game of curling. I think it was country music superstar Garth Brooks who said some years back that curling looked so easy he thought he might take it up and play in the Olympics. No matter what side you take, it is sometimes those stupid comments that benefit the disparaged. Ask some of the curlers here for the Ford World Women s Curling Championship for their thoughts on Alley s Tweet, and they ll laugh and say it can only help the game. Hurt? I think this is actually the best commercial we can have, celebrities being against curling, says German skip Daniela Jentsch. Because then everybody talks about it and that s what we want. It s like, any news is good news for curling. We want people to talk about the sport because in Germany people say, What is curling? I ve never heard of it. So, the more people talk about it the better it is. Of course, we want them to support the sport but even when they re against it people talk about it. I laugh, added Anna Hasselborg, skip of the Swedish women s team that won the 2018 Olympic gold medal. It s more like recognition for our sport. All sports have people out there who say stupid things, saying they can do it better. Those comments, even though it s not nice, it s some kind of recognition that the sport is growing and it s not only curling fans who are watching and following anymore. German skip Daniela Jentsch says celebrities commenting on curling is always a good thing for the sport. WHERE AM I? 4 Page Ford World Women s Curling Championship EYE OPENER SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2018 Welcome home Garlic Girls South Koreans have kinship with North Bay «DAVE KOMOSKY They were dubbed the Garlic Girls at the recent Winter Olympic Games in South Korea, and while that name may not have been all that flattering, their play in women s curling at the global event was flattering as heck. All they did ride an improbable wave at the Olympics to a silver medal for the host country, beating the likes of Canada, Sweden and Japan along the way, and elevating themselves to celebrity status in South Korea and on the Internet. Now skip EunJung Kim and the rest of her South Korean teammates are in the Ford World Women s Curling Championship here in North Bay, looking to build on their ever-growing popularity, and perhaps solidify the country s place as a top nation in the women s game. Like the rest of the curling world, fans here will love them. They are unique. The team is made up of a whole bunch of Kims: skip EunJung Kim, 27, sisters KyeongAe Kim, 24, and Yeong- Mi Kim, 26, Seon-Yeong Kim, 24, and alternate Choci Kim, 21. They were dubbed the Garlic Girls by the Korean press because they all come from a small farming region called Uiseong County that is known for its production of garlic. They also share some sort of quirky food nicknames such as Yogurt, Pancake, Steak, Sunny and ChoCho. When everybody on the team has the same surname, there must be some way to identify them, right? Then there are the oversized glasses worn by the skip. They became something of a sensation at the Games, along with her poker-faced intensity that seemed out of step with her angelic face. 5 #WWCC2018 Page 5 All of this and their talent has played into their success and popularity. But there is another reason, and perhaps most important of all, that the locals will take to the South Korean girls this week. There is a built-in kinship with South Korea that stretches back to This is the city where South Korea came of age in women s curling. It was back in 1997 when KyungDoo Kim, today South Korea s team leader, brought a group of students to North Bay. He had contacted Mark Brown, who managed the North Bay Granite Club at the time, about bringing some girls over to Canada to learn the game in an effort to introduce curling to his country. One thing led to another and they came over. With the help of the Canadian Curling Association, they were bused north from Toronto, along with an interpreter from Sudbury, then set up with teachers Bea Lockhart, John Toswell and Dave Cerisano in North Bay. The Canadians spent days with them on the finer aspects of curling. Their thirst for knowledge of the game was insatiable, and although they couldn t speak English, they picked up the game fast. Their biggest weakness, though, was strategy, and that s what they wanted to learn the most to take back home. And that, really, was the start of it. The seed had been planted in South Korea and it began to grow. South Korea s first curling facility was built in 2006 when the county cobbled together the funds to build a curling centre in Uiseong. Where the game will go in the country is anybody s guess. People in that country still have a hard time figuring out the nuances of the game, but they had no trouble during the Olympics realizing their girls were winning and that s all that really mattered. Could the Garlic Girls win here? It wouldn t be surprising if they did. And if they do, North Bay can say it had a hand in it. Put it altogether and this should be a pretty interesting week for the Garlic Girls. And especially for the fans in this city.

10 Page Ford World Women s Curling Championship EYE OPENER SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2018 Sweden a gold producer Country keeps churning out top women s curling teams By JOHN KOROBANIK Eye Opener Writer Annette Nordberg, Margaretha Sigfridsson, Elisabet Gustafson. and now Anna Hasselborg. Sweden s curling factory keeps producing world and Olympic medallists. In the 20 years since Gustafson won the first of her back-to-back women s world championship gold medals for Sweden, the Scandinavian country has consistently produced some of the world s top curling teams, especially on the female side of the sport. Since 1998 Swedish women have won 11 world championship medals, including five gold. Only Canada has more medals, 13, but one less gold over that period. The latest in Sweden s lengthy list of championship teams is the one skipped by Hasselborg, winner of the recent Winter Olympic gold medal and now here looking to end Sweden s six-year gold-medal drought at the Ford World Women s Curling Championship. Like several before her, Hasselborg and teammates third Sara McManus, second Anges Knochenhauer, lead Sofia Mabergs and alternate Jennie Waahling are products of the highly successful Swedish curling academy. Anna Hasselborg is next role model for young Swedish players. Continued opposite page Proud sponsor of the volunteers at the Ford World Women s Curling Championship Cutline here. 11 #WWCC2018 Page 11 It s like an eco-system, it just keeps going around and around, Hasselborg said of her country s success. And we do have the curling academy. From the 10 players who went to Olympics I think seven were from the academy. That helps a lot, that we have the opportunity to go to the academy and learn how to practice hard and learn curling at an early stage in life. Plus there are those role models Gustafsson with her Olympic bronze in 1998 when the game was re-introduced to the Games and her two world championship golds; Sigfridsson with silver at the 2012 and 2013 worlds and Norberg with back-to-back Olympic gold in 2006 and 2010 and world championship gold in All have shown you can come from here and win, said Hasselborg, who is herself now one of those role models. Although she is an Olympic gold medallist the third Swedish women s skip to win in the last four Games Hasselborg says she is no big hero back home, even though she is the youngest female skip to win Olympic gold. It s not that we are like, super heroes, because it is still a small sport and we have so many great skiers who are much bigger sports stars than we are, she said. But I love the influence that we have on the young curlers in Sweden because just as I saw that you could succeed and win Olympic gold coming from Sweden, I think that this will make young curlers see you can do it in your 20s and I think that makes them want to work really hard and kick my ass. And that s good. Hasselborg and Knockenhauer were born on the same day, May 5, 1989, and have been playing together since they were juniors, about 12 years old. They won the 2010 world junior championship with McManus the alternate. McManus and Mabergs, who played several years together as juniors, joined the Hasselborg team fulltime for the season. The team struggled its first full season together but broke out in , reaching four semifinals and one final in the six Grand Slam events it played in. First of all, we love working hard, we love training a lot, Hasselborg said of the reasons for their success. We share the love for the sport and we have worked really hard and everyone really believes in it. We have a lot of fun and that s important for our success. It s probably more important in Sweden than Canada because of the difference in the number of elite level players in each country. We don t have as many players to chose from so it s very important how we build our teams, she said. If something is not working, we can t just change a player. We have to stick together and work through it. Mostly there s basically no one else to chose from. But we have been having a lot of good teams in Sweden they have shown along We have a lot of fun and that s important for our success. Anna Hasselborg the way that you can succeed coming from Sweden as long as you stick together and work really hard. There s a very strong work ethic and training culture in Sweden. That s one of the reason we can keep the pace up with Canada. Ready for the Future. Team Sweden s Agnes Knochenhauer (left) and Sofia Mabergs work hard over a rock Saturday during the Ford world women s curling championship.

16 Page Ford World Women s Curling Championship EYE OPENER SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2018 Wendy Morgan congratulates the Canadian team. Canadians bring BINGO HOTLINE: Airport Road, North Bay home a bronze Eye Opener Wendy Morgan would normally be found sitting in the coach s seat for Team Canada s games here, but that spot is being occupied for now by Bryan Cochrane, who is scouting opponents. Morgan is absent for the first part of the championship while fulfilling her duties as team manager for the Canadian wheelchair curling team at the 2018 Paralympics in PyeonChang, South Korea. On Saturday Canada, skipped by Mark Ideson, defeated Korea 5-3 to win the bronze medal. That victory maintained Canada s record of having won at least one medal in every Paralympic Winter Games. Other members of the team are Ina Forrest, Dennis Thiessen, Marie Wright and alternate Jamie Anseeuw. n n n They became instant celebrities with their success at the Olympic Games and now EunJung Kim and her teammates want to take the sport of curling to the next level. On the opening day of the Ford World Women s Curling Championship, Kim said life has changed for her and her teammates who won the silver medal in PyeonChang, the first ever Olympic curling medal for South Korea. So many now (know us). Before the Olympics, not so many, she said through an interpreter. But now so many persons know the curling. That was our first goal. So we feel great, feel real excited (about that). Now, she said, she wants to make curling one of the most popular sports in her country. WORLD NOTEBOOK n n n Guests and dignitaries were overwhelmed at Friday night s opening banquet over at the Granite Curling Club and how volunteers had changed the interior into one fabulous dinner spot. The club will also function as this week s Patch, the event s official entertainment centre. But for the banquet is was decked out spectacularly, and most folks raved about it. They also had thumbs up for the dinner, service and brevity of speeches. So well done, North Bay! n n n No curler works a room better than Team Canada skip Jennifer Jones. There she was again at Friday s banquet, gladhanding and hugging fans and posing for photos with them. The 2014 Olympic gold-medal winner remains one of Canada s most recognizable athletes and has used her celebrity at major events over the years to spread feel-good moments to fans.
