1 COMPETITION FOR PROFESSIONAL STAINED GLASS ARTISTS ENTRIES INVITED FOR THE DESIGN OF A CIRCLE OF LEADED STAINED GLASS ( A ROUNDEL ) TO BE GIVEN TO THE LORD MOUNTEVANS, TO CELEBRATE HIS TIME AS THE 688 th LORD MAYOR OF THE CITY OF LONDON For the second year running, Reflections of the Lord Mayor has offered the Glaziers' Company an opportunity to invite the Livery's artist members, members of the British Society of Master Glass Painters (BSMGP), members of the Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) together with employees and associates of such members, to submit designs for the "Reflections of the Lord Mayor" roundel to be presented at a gala dinner on Tuesday 1 May Details are as follows: BACKGROUND Reflections of the Lord Mayor is a non-profit organisation that supports the Lord Mayor s Appeal. It aims to help those linked to the City of London to consider the role they play in the current and future success both in community and business terms of the City of London. Each year for the past four years, the organisation invites a past Lord Mayor to speak at a gala dinner about their unique and personal recollections of a year of office in what is one of the world s oldest elected roles. Profits from the event go to the Lord Mayor s Appeal Charity. 1 The Worshipful Company of Glaziers & Painters of Glass, whose records go back to 1328, is one of London s ancient mediaeval City Livery Companies. Together with its charity, the Glaziers Foundation, 2 it promotes and supports the art and craft of stained glass. The winner of the first Glass Roundel Competition, run in 2017, was Jayne Ford (see photograph at appendix 1). It is intended that at the fifth annual dinner in 2018, the presenting Lord Mayor should be awarded a stained glass roundel to commemorate the evening and his term in office. 1 Registered charity number: Registered charity number: slp/hw Nov 2018 (final)

2 SPECIFICATION 1. The design of the roundel should specifically reflect the aims of The Reflections of the Lord Mayor. These are: a) to support the Lord Mayor s Appeal, and b) to help those linked to the City of London to consider the role they play in its current and future success. 2. It must feature the words Reflections of the Lord Mayor and the year "2018". It must also feature the name of the Lord Mayor for whom it is intended: Alderman The Lord Mountevans. 3. It may feature elements of the work, achievements, supported charities and personal interests of Lord Mountevans 3 in his year of office as Lord Mayor, and his work in the City of London. 4. Further general information about Reflections of the Lord Mayor may be found on its website including information about previous events. This website will be updated early in the New Year to publicise the May 2018 gala dinner. The organisation s logo may be found on this site and a copy is annexed at appendix 2. Elements of this logo may be incorporated into the design. 5. The roundel should be nine inches in diameter and should be leaded, painted and may include engraving. FINANCIAL DETAILS There is a fixed budget for the winning artist. The price paid for the completed roundel and the design, will be 750 plus VAT. The winning artist will be invited to attend the gala dinner and presentation, as a non-paying guest, on 1 May 2018 in London. While no extra payment will be made for this attendance, modest travelling expenses may be met, on application. The fee for designing and then producing the roundel reflects the fact that this commission provides an outstanding promotional opportunity for the winning artist, within the City of London and beyond. The agreement for production of the completed roundel on the due date, according to the confirmed design and for the set payment, will be between Reflections of the Lord Mayor and the winning artist only. DESIGN SUBMISSIONS Designs must be submitted by covering to the Glaziers' Clerk, Alison Evans: clerk@worshipfulglaziers.com with PDF or jpeg attachments of the design and supporting material. 3 Submissions must also include in the body of the 1. The designer's name, address, and contact telephone details and confirmation of membership (or employer s or principal s membership) of either the Glaziers' Company, the BSMGP and/or CGS, as appropriate. 2. A report (maximum of 350 words only) that explains your design and suggested fabrication. 3. Confirmation that the design, if chosen, will be produced and delivered by the date required, and to the given budget. 4. Confirmation that the winning designer will be present at the gala dinner and presentation on Tuesday 1 May 2018 and is willing co-operate with the organisers on event promotional activities and actions as required. TIMETABLE AND DEADLINES All entries should be submitted by only to the Glaziers' Clerk (clerk@worshipfulglaziers.com) no later than 5pm on Wednesday 7 February The commissioning organisation expects to make its decision by Friday 17 March 2018 at the latest and the artist whose design has been chosen will be notified by on, or shortly after, then. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The submitted designs will be judged, and the winner chosen, by the Reflections of the Lord Mayor team including: Helen Whittaker MA, FMGP, senior artist member of the Glaziers Livery Company; and founder and host of Reflections of the Lord Mayor, Mr Christopher Seow. The Judges decision is final. The client (Reflections of the Lord Mayor) reserves the right to query aspects of the design with the winning entry and negotiate additions/amendments with the artist, including creating a stand for the roundel, if required. In keeping with the client s commitment to encouraging the art and craft of stained glass, submissions are welcome from student, new and emerging practitioners, as well as from more established artists. The opportunity to capture and depict the spirit of the Lord Mayor as set out in this design brief is open to all members of the BSMGP, CGS; artist members of the Glaziers Livery Company and employees or associates of any such member. It will not be possible to notify unsuccessful entries individually of the outcome but the name of the person winning the commission will be posted on social media by the Glaziers Livery Company and on Reflections of the Lord Mayor website in due course. SUBMISSION OF COMPLETED WINNING ROUNDEL Delivery of the finished roundel must be made to the organisers of Reflections of the Lord Mayor by Tuesday 24 April 2018 at the latest. 3 slp/hw Nov 2018 (final)
