M U L L E N S H E R I F F S O F F I C E SERVING THE CITIZENS OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY SINCE 1789 PERSONAL FIREARMS INVENTORY RECORD Allegheny County Sheriff s Office William P. Mullen, Sheriff 436 Grant Street, Courthouse Room 11 Pittsburgh, PA FIREARMS DIVISION
2 MESSAGE FROM SHERIFF MULLEN All gun owners must respect the threat their firearms pose to public safety if lost, stolen or mishandled. This Personal Firearms Inventory Record Booklet was created to help gun owners maintain a detailed account of all firearms previously or currently in their possession. Once all information is properly documented, this packet should be stored and locked in a secure place such as a fireproof safe so records cannot be corrupted. It is also a good idea to review your insurance policies to determine potential coverage for your firearms. Firearms can be added to riders on most homeowners and renters insurance policies. Gun owners are urged to inventory their firearms frequently to ensure weapons have not been misplaced or stolen. Gun owners should immediately report a lost or stolen firearm to the police, as well as, their insurance company. Not only will this enhance an owner's chances of having their weapon returned, it is a necessary action to prevent endangerment to others. Barrel: Serial #: Thank you for taking responsibility for your firearms and for your important efforts to keep Allegheny County safe! William P. Mullen, Sheriff
3 Barrel: Serial #: 10 COMMANDMENTS OF SAFE FIREARM HANDLING 1. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. 2. Treat every firearm as though it were loaded. 3. Unload firearms and open action, and keep your finger off the trigger until when ready to shoot. 4. Keep barrels clear and choose proper ammunition for firearm. 5. Be sure of your target before you pull the trigger. 6. Never point a firearm at anything you don't want to shoot. 7. Never climb or jump with a loaded firearm. 8. Never shoot at a flat hard surface of water. 9. Store firearms and ammunition safely. 10. Avoid alcohol and drugs before and during shooting. GUN OWNERS RESPONSIBILITIES Most states impose some form of legal duty on adults to take reasonable steps to deny access by children to dangerous substances or instruments. It is the individual gun owners' responsibility to understand and follow al laws regarding gun purchase, ownership, storage, transport, etc. Contact your state police and I or local county sheriff's office for information regarding such laws. If you own a gun and do not know how to operate it, do not experiment with it. Point it in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger, and store it securely. Seek competent assistance and instruction at once. An untrained adult can be as dangerous as a curious child. Store guns so that they are inaccessible to children and other unauthorized users. Gun shops sell a wide variety of safes, cases and other security devices. While specific security measures may vary, a parent must, in every case, assess the exposure of the firearm and absolutely ensure that it is inaccessible to a child
4 WHERE TO GET TRAINING The time may come when you or your family members want to learn how to handle and shoot a gun safely. In the case of a child, his or her attitude, learning ability, and physical and emotional maturity are some of the factors to be weighed before allowing formal instruction to begin. When a parent decides a young person is ready, many training opportunities available. For more information on Youth Programs, Providing instruction in the safe handling, use, and storage of firearms is one of the NRA's most important functions. Basic Firearms Training Courses, taught by over 51,000 NRA Certified Instructors, are offered in every state. A program called "FIRST Steps" (Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training) provides a three-hour orientation to your specific firearm. For more information about any of these courses, call If you have decided that your child is not ready to be trained in a gun's handling and use, teach him or her to follow the instructions of the Eddie Eagle Gun-safe Program. If you see a gun, STOP! DO NOT TOUCH. LEAVE THE AREA. TELL AN ADULT. This brochure is not intended as a complete course in gun safety and is not a substitute for formal, qualified instruction in the handling, use or storage of firearms. The guidelines herein should he considered options to minimize the chance of an accident occurring in the home. Barrel: Serial #:
