Red Dot, Powder Measures, and Digital Scales Submitted by 4CRP Club Member Larry Ott Here is a short note on using Red Dot. This is a popular powder, particularly for the pistol league folks as it performs just as well as time-tested Bullseye. Red Dot is a very useful powder it is great for pistol target competition and very useful in reduced rifle loads. Particularly if you cast your own rifle bullets and want to shoot these with good accuracy at 100 to 200 yards. It is 'fluffy' and fills up both pistol and rifle cases, and in rifle cases, does not seem to be very position sensitive. So a great powder. I purchased a digital scale last year, in part because I wanted one, and in part because Hal Shepard, Howard Kantor and Dale Donohue kept beating me in the indoor pistol league competition. I had too many fliers. The digital scale has been great I can quickly weigh out bullets and powder charges. Weighing bullets has not been worth the time. What I cast from wheel weights are generally consistent within 0.5 to 1.0 grain, which is better than I can shoot. Weighing out Red Dot powder has been illuminating. Using the #9 Rotor on my RCBS Little Dandy pistol powder measure, I expected around 3.5 grains of Red Dot to push out 148 grain hollow base wad cutters at around 800 fps. What I found using my digital powder measure was that the powder charge varied from 1.6 grains to 4.2 grains. The trend in variation was fairly consistent: several charges at 3.0 to 3.5 grains, followed by several charges at less than 3.0 grains (down to 1.6 grains), followed by several charges at greater than 4.0 grains (up to 4.8 grains). I attribute this to the 'fluffy' nature of Red Dot and a tendency for it to form a 'bridge' over the powder rotor, creating unacceptable lightweight charges, and then the 'bridge' collapsing, creating unacceptable heavyweight charges. I consider Red Dot to be one of the most useful powders available, but I have determined that a person needs to be careful and do a lot of cross checking with a powder scale when using this powder. I fully intend to put Howard, Dale and Hal through their paces in pistol league later this year, although I think that Don Cook shooting his 44 special might just clean our clocks. Note by Editor: 4CRP Pistol League begins in November. Contact Roger Lawrence for early sign-up or information
