1 Shooting instills discipline in a child Shooting lesson 3: Live fire This is the first time the student will fire the gun with pellets. The instructor may have to cock and load the gun for the student, so remain close to the firing line and stand just behind the student. Be ready to grab the rifle if the student moves the muzzle in an unsafe direction. Shoot into an approved pellet trap and make everyone in the area wear approved safety glasses for this exercise. It s best to shoot at a target that has multiple bulls and shoot just one shot at each bull. That way, the pellet holes are most visible. Use only wadcutter (flatnosed) pellets because they ll cut perfectly round holes in the target. Use only official targets printed on target paper. Other types of paper tear and do not shot pellet holes well. With the target set up, you ll first conduct some dry-fire exercises if the rifle permits it. Guns like the Daisy 853 allow the bolt to be cocked and the trigger to be pulled without charging the gun with air. That s perfect for training a new shooter because they can get used to the trigger-pull without firing any pellets. But if a gun doesn t have this feature, you have to start shooting pellets right away. DO NOT dry-fire (shoot a gun without a pellet) if the gun is not designed for it! The rifle is rested so the student does not have to bear its weight. A rolled-up blanket is good for this, but be sure to adjust it so the shooter is comfortable. The shooter is seated behind the table the rifle rests on, and all others stand behind the shooter. The shooter does not touch the rifle until the instructor tells him that the range is hot (meaning all people are safely behind the firing line and wearing eye protection). Anytime Cease Fire is called by anyone, the shooter puts the rifle down and does not touch it again until instructed to do so. If it s cocked and loaded at the time this happens, the shooter informs the instructor of that status but he still puts the gun down. No one goes forward of the firing line until all guns are unloaded and made safe (unable to fire). How a gun is made safe depends on its design, but the instructor is responsible for knowing how it s done and to inform all shooters how to make each gun on the range safe. Make the range hot (declaring that all shooters are prepared to shoot and that it s safe to do so). Allow the shooter to cock and load the gun at this time. Tell him to fire five shots at the target. Then call a Cease Fire, make all guns safe and go downrange to retrieve the target Spend some time critiquing this first target. If the triangulation exercise (shooting lesson one) went well, you can expect all five pellets to be inside the bull, assuming the rifle was properly sighted-in. If they all score eight or more points (where the pellet hole has touched the 8-ring of the bull), the shooter is doing exceptionally well for the first time. Praise him and shoot a second five shots, following the same procedure as before. Critique the second five shots as you did the first and consider ending the session at this point. If the shooter s still interested, you may continue. Young shooters will quickly tire from the level of concentration this kind of event requires. In time, they ll build endurance but this early, they ll tire fast. Maintain discipline at all times If the shooter commits an unsafe act or fails to follow instructions at any time, end the session. Discuss why the session ended, so he understands that his time shooting depends on his behavior. In time, this will instill self-discipline if the rules are followed consistently. Additional shooting This is where a parent or guardian s judgment comes into play. Some young shooters advance very fast, and their self-control develops quickly. Others do not. The supervising guardian has to evaluate each child individually and determine the pace at which advancement can take place. The goal is to allow the young shooter to graduate from shooting a rested rifle, to holding it offhand and shooting standing up. Then, you work toward shooting a full match and start keeping track of scores. Improvement can be plotted that way, and that s what all of this training is about. From time to time, intentionally commit an unsafe act, such as trying to walk in front of the firing line before it has been declared safe (some call it a cold line). The shooter should immediately call Cease Fire when this happens. If they don t, stop what you re doing, point out the unsatisfactory behavior to the shooter and tell them it is their responsibility to call a Cease Fire when they witness an unsafe act. BB guns I m recommending only pellet rifles for this training because BB guns have too many conflicting safety issues that need to be addressed. Enjoyed this article?
