25 Do hollowpoint pellets really work? 10% off by Tom Gaylord Hollowpoint pellets have been around for a long time, but 20 years ago they didn t work as well as shooters expected. Today, though, there have been some real advances in the current crop of hollowpoint pellets on the market and some of them work surprisingly well. What is a hollowpoint? A hollowpoint pellet is exactly what it sounds like -- a pellet that has a hollow or cavity in its nose. When it strikes the target the hollow nose, which is weak by design, deforms more readily than it would if it were solid. Cannot be combined with free shipping. The details One big aspect that affects the performance of hollowpoints is the velocity they are traveling when they strike the target. There is a velocity range in which they deform well and expand much larger than their original diameter. If they are going faster than that speed they break apart and may not expand as desired. Any slower than that speed range and they retain their original shape and not deforming at all. The key to good performance, therefore, is to design pellets that perform well over the widest velocity range possible and then to drive the lower velocity level as low as it can go. That is where some huge strides have been made. Hollowpoint pellets are far more than just pellets with holes in their noses. The most energetic of them today have large cup-shaped open noses that are designed to fold back very easily when they encounter resistance. Some of these pellets noses are wide open, while others have synthetic points that sit inside the noses to help streamline the pellet. Thought has also been given to the subtle shape of the lead in the noses of some hollowpoints, to keep the front of the pellet together (rather that breaking off in splinters), even as it peels back. In one case, the lead holds together so well that the hollow nose peels back to become a pointed pellet shape. It s really interesting to see. Velocity About15 years ago hollowpoints had to impact soft targets like duct seal and soap at about 750 f.p.s. to get much deformation. The latest pellets lower that impact limit to about 400 f.p.s. That means that a rifle that launches these pellets at 900 f.p.s. has a tremendous range advantage with the new pellets. Instead of only working well to 25 yards, the latest pellets are capable of performing well to 50 yards and slightly beyond. Accuracy If you can t hit, performance is meaningless, so hollowpoints have to be accurate. There were some bad ones about five years ago that, although they opened well, were not accurate enough to make them worth shooting. But the market has purged these and most of today s hollowpoints are remarkably accurate.
