2 With the weather being more welcoming for the outdoor activities, I d like to take this chance to talk about big bore air guns. As we all know by now the big bore air gun is capable of putting meat on a table as well as a firearm. It was the gun that traveled from Washington to the west coast and back with great success. As a matter of fact the most important gun in the DC collection is Lewis and Clark s Girandoni air gun. That big bore, a.46 caliber, was THE air gun that changed American history. When I started this business a while back, I traveled to many local shows to gain some recognition. I drove a van loaded to the hilt with air guns. Most were.177, some.22 and a rare W&S Patriot in.25 caliber. Regardless how many.25 cal. I would order from the UK, they were gone in days. During one of the gun shows I attended in New York state, a gentleman walked up to me and offered me his long-time big bore manufacturer s name to order directly from. He was retiring and needed someone who really cared about air guns. To say the least I was delighted! Up until that time, I did not shoot anything above a.25 cal.. When he brought the.45 Sam Yang 909, I was a bit surprised at the size of the rifle. It looked mean and it looked like it meant business. We shook hands on the deal. That was more than a decade ago. 8 Is this airgun s golden age? by Tom Gaylord I held the new Colt Single Action Army BB revolver in my hand today and thought of the pellet and BB guns of the past that have tried to imitate the cowboy thumbuster. There were really only a few, and Crosman made all of them. From 1959 to 1969, there was the Single Action 6 a six-shot.22-caliber pellet revolver whose rotating full-sized cylinder was loaded with pellets from the front like a cap-and-ball revolver. Then there was the 18-shot BB revolver that Crosman also made. Crosman bought P.Y. Hahn, but the Hahn name was left on this gun, which was made from 1959 to Both revolvers lived on a little longer in the 1970s with changed model names. Both revolvers resembled Single Action Army sixguns, except they carried their 12-gram CO2 cartridges under the barrels behind black plastic shrouds. It was roughly in the same place that the ejector housing would be, though it was several times fatter. The look they achieved was good for their day, and I remember that I prized my SA-6 when it was new. But neither gun can stand up to the new Colt Single Action Army BB revolver that Umarex just brought out! Colt Single Action Army BB revolver is impressively authentic. The new Colt revolver is gorgeous! It will initially be offered with a 5.50-inch artillery barrel in both blue and nickel finishes. But at the 2015 SHOT Show, Umarex also offered a special run of 500 guns with distressed finish and dedicated to the U.S. Marshal s Museum. The entire batch was sold on day one of the show! Shooters have been asking for a realistic SAA airgun for years, and they get everything in this new one. Umarex used the grip frame of an 1860 Colt Army percussion revolver because it s half an inch longer than the original SAA grip. That allowed just enough room to house the 12-gram CO2 cartridge without any external evidence of its presence, and the difference in size is difficult to spot. Is this the golden age? That got me thinking. We have some remarkable airguns today. Collectors often reflect that the good old days were in the past, when the best guns were made. They reference stout constructions of wood and steel to reinforce their claims that older airguns were made better, but the truth is that there have never been airguns quite like the ones we re seeing right now. The Daisy company wowed the gun world in 1961 when they brought out their first Spittin Image BB gun the 1894 lever action. I ve read that a Daisy rep switched one of their guns for a Winchester lever action at a trade show and the Winchester folks didn t even notice it! That s how realistic it was. That started a wave of lookalike airguns that continues today. Daisy s 1894 BB gun (top) was realistically sized and shaped, but it doesn t hold a candle to the Walther Lever Action, which is more accurate, and easier to operate. As nice as any of Daisy s many 1894 rifles were, though, they don t hold a candle to Walther s Lever Action rifle. It s an 8-shot.177-caliber pellet that can put all its shots on a penny at 20 yards! The 88-gram CO2 cartridge lives hidden in the wooden butt, where it supplies compressed gas for many hundreds of shots. Unlike the Daisy 1894, the Walther s lever is finger-flickin easy to operate. It doesn t have to cock a powerful mainspring, like Daisy s, because the power to propel those lead pellets comes from the compressed carbon dioxide gas. It s possible to load and fire all 8 pellets in less than 5 seconds if you want, which is something the Daisy could never do. And the realistic weight of the rifle is very close to a Winchester Lever lovers never had it this good! In fact, our Walther 1894 CO2 rifle led me to buy the firearm it copied at the insistence of my wife, who now claims it as her own and periodically reminds me it s not for sale or trade. Full-auto airguns If you wanted to shoot full-auto airguns in the 1950s, the closest you got was the Feltman carnival gun, which was used to shoot out the red star. It had the general shape of a Thompson submachine gun, but no Tommygun was ever tethered to a tank of compressed air! Regular civilians had a hard time acquiring one of those guns, though. They were made for the carnival trade and sold exclusively through those channels. The ammo for the gun No. 2 lead shot was purchased, not by the 25 lb. bag, but by the pallet! The guns were cheap enough to shoot once the thousands of dollars of support equipment and supplies had been obtained. So, maybe this was a solution for the likes of Bruce Wayne but not for the average Joe. Full-auto airguns have been a real challenge, because the CO2 gas most manufacturers use to power them is actually a first-class refrigerant! It actually freezes the gun as it does its job. Until recently, full-auto airgun operation meant resorting to a Feltman carny gun or something equally impractical. Most modern automatic airguns are limited to burst-fire, only. But three years ago, Air Ordnance put an end to that limitation. Now, anyone can n SMG22 belt-fed submachine gun from Air Ordnance. It delivers up to 100 shots in just seconds as long you hold down the trigger. This gun is entirely self-contained, very portable and shoots standard.22-caliber lead pellets that can be purchased almost anywhere. During my testing, the gun functioned without a jam to the extent that, even when some pellets fell out of the belt, it kept right on firing.
