Great collector gun as well..177 cal=427 fps PC :.177: $ When I test an airgun for the Pyramyd Air blog, I test it with 10-shot groups at distances I feel accurately represent the maximum effective distance at which that airgun can engage a living target successfully in the hands of a good shot. That is usually no farther than 50 yards, because shooting past 50 yards with an airgun requires a lot of experience if you want to do it successfully. I m not talking about one good fiveshot group out of ten groups fired. I m talking about each and every pellet hitting the target exactly where it needs to, to accomplish your objective. I test guns rigorously so buyers will know what to expect when they purchase them. But what I do in those tests goes way beyond what is reasonable for most purposes. It is similar to a car manufacturer testing a passenger sedan at top speed for 24 hours, knowing full well no owner is ever going to drive that fast for that long. Your standards are not the same as mine When you set up an air rifle to hunt with, you need to set some standards for the gun. Suppose you want to hunt squirrels with the rifle. A squirrel has a kill zone that s about one inch in diameter. It doesn t matter if you shoot for the head or for the heart both targets are roughly the same size. What you need to be able to do is place a high percentage of your shots in a one-inch circle. I don t say all your shots have to be that accurate, because that is impossible. Sooner or later you will miss the one-inch circle with even the most accurate air rifle shooting the very best pellets. This one-inch group is what is known as the required hunting accuracy. It s the level of accuracy you need to have when hunting squirrels. Hunt a different animal and the accuracy requirement will change. For example, I use a six-inch circle for coyotes if I plan to make a heart/lung shot. Three inches for a head shot. And I want an energy floor at the target of at least 100 foot-pounds. The rest of the equation is the maximum distance at which you are assured of hitting that one-inch circle with reasonable certainty. If you can do it at 25 yards but no farther then your airgun is a 25-yard gun. If you can do it at 50 yards well, you get the picture. I have known hunters who shot inaccurate arms at ridiculous distances. They had no hope of connecting. What I have presented here is the right way to get ready for a hunt. My tests will continue I will continue to test airguns the same way I always have.
