2 It saddens me to write this, but I want to share our collective loss. As some of you may know, this summer we all lost a very good friend, colleague, cat lover and all-around airgun aficionado, Edith Gaylord. She worked for Pyramyd Air for almost 10 years as our editor-in-chief, among many, many other things. Edith was an avid grammarian with an uncanny ability to communicate information and to correctly address the facts in proper English language. Whereas most people either love to shoot guns or love to think and write, Edith was able to blend two very disparate interests. Her responsibility to Pyramyd was to make sure that all of us (including me) understood what air gunning is and what responsibilities come with it. When it came to facts Edith was ruthless. There were no mistakes allowed in descriptions on the Pyramyd website unless you want to bleed from your ears...o yes! There would be a nasty confrontation over the phone...and...she was correct!! Do not argue with Edith! More importantly, Edith was the strength and inspiration behind her famous husband, Tom Gaylord. She edited his daily blog posts, jumped in to answer readers comments and listened to his dissertations on airguns for hours on end (where most wives eyes would glaze over). The Tom most of us have grown to love over the years, and from whom we have all gained airgun knowledge and insights from, was because of Edith. She must have loved Tom a lot. She did not kick him out of the house after he missed his target perched above the couch and punched a bunch of holes in it!! Yep. She loved him (almost as much as her cats) and she was his best friend. What Edith has done for the airgun industry by coalescing our collective thoughts has changed how we all approach what we do in the sport. What she s done for Pyramyd Air, and everyone she s worked with, cannot be put into words. 8 8 I held the new Colt Single Action Army BB revolver in my hand today and thought of the pellet and BB guns of the past that have tried to imitate the cowboy thumbuster. There were really only a few, and Crosman made all of them. From 1959 to 1969, there was the Single Action 6 a six-shot.22-caliber pellet revolver whose rotating full-sized cylinder was loaded with pellets from the front like a cap-and-ball revolver. Then there was the 18-shot BB revolver that Crosman also made. Crosman bought P.Y. Hahn, but the Hahn name was left on this gun, which was made from 1959 to Both revolvers lived on a little longer in the 1970s with changed model names. Both revolvers resembled Single Action Army sixguns, except they carried their 12-gram CO2 cartridges under the barrels behind black plastic shrouds. It was roughly in the same place that the ejector housing would be, though it was several times fatter. The look they achieved was good for their day, and I remember that I prized my SA-6 when it was new. But neither gun can stand up to the new Colt Single Action Army BB revolver that Umarex just brought out! Benjamin s 392 is simple and straightforward. It s been around in one form or another for decades and Tom thinks it makes a great survival airgun. Why I picked a multi-pump Imagine the variety of critters you could dispatch with a multi-pump. Put 4-5 pumps in the gun, and you could easily take a rabbit at relatively close distances. A few more pumps, and birds (head shots, please) would be on the menu. Put in 7 or 8 pumps, and you ll be taking larger lizards and even some snakes. Again, with head shots. I suppose I could take a wild pig with 8 pumps. While I don t consider that sporting, I m talking strictly about a survival situation. And, you re no doubt well aware of a large airgun manufacturer who already advocates taking wild pigs with a head shot from a.177 cal. rifle. A Benjamin 392 air rifle is.22 caliber, which offers a bit more punch. Maintenance? The only thing that might need regular maintenance on a multi-pump is a pump head. As I ve stated for years, keep one pump in the rifle when you re not shooting, and you ll protect the seal. My 15-year-old 392 still has the original pump head because I ve followed this procedure religiously. What about oiling the pump lever? Pellgunoil is the best thing, but what if you didn t bring any with you? How about coconut oil? (I expect to find coconuts on my island!) That ought to do it for maintenance. Sounds simple. And that s the point. I don t want a gun that needs to be handled with kid gloves or has lots of things that could fail or might need special attention to keep it functional. The gun has to take care of me, not the other way around. Why I didn t pick another powerplant Here are the reasons I eliminated all the other powerplants from my list. I own quite a few spring guns and have extolled the virtues Ideal Survival Airgun BY TOM GAYLORD of this dirt-simple powerplant. However, there s one hitch. The mainspring could break and it will wear out. While breakage IS a remote possibility, I m totally out of luck if it happens. Gas springs don t usually fail, but this is a life-and-death situation, and I don t want to risk even the slightest chance something could go wrong if I m depending on an airgun to survive. Plus, the piston seal could get nicked, and the piston would lose compression. There s very little you can do once that happens. Of all the other airgun powerplants, a spring-piston is my second choice. Just select one that isn t a magnum, so it can last. Single-stroke pneumatic This powerplant just doesn t have enough power to take small and medium game. While I could use the stock to club an animal, that s not really what I had in mind. CO2 gun My deserted island is warm enough for CO2, but where will I replenish my stock? Plus, I ll need Pellgunoil or the gun will start to leak after a short period of time. I don t think coconut oil will be a good substitute. For those of you who thought my choice would be the Condor or Marauder, I m sorry to disappoint you. I won t have air to replenish a scuba tank or electricity or gasoline to power a compressor. I could take a hand pump, but that s just one more piece of equipment that could break or need maintenance. Remember, I m trying to make this as simple as possible with the least number of things that could go wrong. The variable power of a multi-pump was one of the deciding factors. I don t want a gun so powerful that my pellets rip through a critter and exit the other side. I want the ammo to stay inside and create a larger wound channel. This ensures that the animal will die faster. One final thing that no one talks about is the shooter s ability to operate the gun at lower levels that involve less stress. The Benjamin 397 and 392 are already very understressed airguns. But you have an ace up your sleeve if you own one of these in a survival situation. Remember that nick I mentioned on the compression seal of the springer? There s probably no less chance of nicking the seal on the pump head of a multi-pump pneumatic. What you do with a multi-pump pneumatic when that happens is something you can t do with a springer pump it more times. So, if your multi-pump pneumatic seal leaks a little you add more strokes to compensate for that leak and you re back where you want to be. What else would I want/need? I also need pellets! I can easily shoot 1,000 pellets on a weekend, but I could make that many last for years if I had to. My first choice would be Crosman Premiers, as they deliver very consistent velocities. I d also like to take a sharp knife, a knife sharpener and a multi-tool. I could get along without everything but the knife, but they d be nice to have.
