Quincy, WA Spring Tractor Pull April 20 th, 2013 Columbia Basin Antique Power Club This year s Quincy Spring Pull was different than in year s past I finally made it to the practice day on Friday the 19th. That particular Friday morning it was monsoon raining in the Portland area. The Massey Harris 101 and pulling supplies had been loaded the night before the tropical style storm hit the area in the early morning hours. Leaving town shortly after 8am in the driving rain, I headed for the east side of the mountains where it s always dry. Sure enough, by the time I arrived in Quincy, I could see blue sky and shortly after that the sun came out. It turned out to be a perfect day for the practice pull. This is the first pull of the year in the Northwest, so there were lots of eager pullers that came out for the test and tune by Zack Peterson and Podium Finish, LLC 1

2 One of the more innovative things I noticed at this year s pull was a weight trailer fabricated by Russell Gourley to carry his weights from his hauling rig. The practice pull was a huge opportunity to get in a few extra hooks. For instance, I pulled the MH 101 a 3 times to get used to the track conditions, weight balance, and tire pressure.

After the practice pull, I went to visit Doug D Avis at his parts yard in Moses Lake, WA.

There is tough competition at this pull, so making the fine adjustments is where the difference could be near the end of a hook. After the practice pull, I went to visit Doug D Avis at his parts yard in Moses Lake, WA. We pulled a set of standard tread axle housings out of a MH 44 that I may use to lighten up the 101 further, perhaps making it possible to pull in a 3500# class. The cast centers on these axles are extremely heavy. Each assembly weighs a whopping 468lbs the way they sit! 2013 by Zack Peterson and Podium Finish, LLC 3

I ventured down the street to the local McDonald s to supplement the meal. At the same time a fellow puller, Jim Buys, was there as well and I noticed a pair of tires in the back of his pickup truck. He had brought them to the pull to see if any other pullers could use them. We made a deal on them and I now have a set of tires for the MH 101 Senior project. These are a pair of BFGoodrich Silvertown Power Grip Tires that are 8 ply. These are a departure from the Firestones I like to run, so we ll see how they work by Zack Peterson and Podium Finish, LLC 4
