1 English Speedway Trophy 1938 Compiled by Bob Ozanne. Acknowledgments I should like to thank the following for their encouragement and practical help with my Speedway Pre-War research. Very much appreciated. Bob. Roger Beaman, Nigel Bird, Brian Collins, Keith Green, Jim Henry, Matt Jackson, Peter Jackson Alan Jones, John Somerville, Mike Terran and Allen Trump. Comment The original plans for the 1938 Division 2 were based on the hope that reserve teams from Division 1 would join the League. Encouraging new talent in both divisions was the objective, This early season competition was a trial to test comparative strengths between the two Divisions. The Division 1 reserve teams fared badly apart from Belle Vue who won the Cup. To be fair the odds were stacked against them. The Div 1 sides were not allowed to race on their home tracks. Even matches between them were at neutral second division venues. The Div 1 clubs were discouraged and the awaited entries for Division 2 did not materialise, even from Belle Vue. Out of the English Cup Reserve teams only West Ham entered the second division. They were joined by Harringay reserves who rode as Lea Bridge at the newly reopened track. Key to Abbreviations C = chain, DH = dead heat, E = engine or machine failure, EPH = pushed home, ET = bike problems but finished, F = fell, FRM = remounted, FIL = fell when leading, L = lapped, LD = laid bike down, N = replaced by reserve, NS = non starter, no reserve, P = tyre problems, R = non finisher but reason not known, XS = excluded for starting offence, XT = excluded time limit, XW = excluded, crossed white line, W = wheel problems.

The flag marshal was trying to sort out the flags and Arthur Westwood the Sheffield manager was running all over the place waving his arms and shouting. Westwood ran over to Allott and encouraged him to ride on, which he did and won!! Oliver Hart remounted and was the only other finisher.
