The Huskies were led by 6-5 senior forward Tyrone Hammick. Hammick recorded 15 points, connecting on 6-of-9 from the floor and 3- of-5 from the line. Others scoring in double-figures included 6-4 senior forward Dwayne Barnes (11 points) and 6-5 freshman forward Jean Francois (13 points). 2 HURRICANE TEAM NOTES LAST OUTING AGAINST COLUMBIA November 21, 2000 Miami Arena, Miami, FL Marcus Barnes and Joe Gordon came off the bench to combine for 21 second-half points as the University of Miami defeated Columbia, 65-41, in its home opener at the Miami Arena. Victor Munoz led Columbia with 12 points. Barnes tossed in a career-high 12 points to lead Miami while John Salmons added 11 points. Darius Rice added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds while Gordon registered nine points and a game-high four steals. The Hurricanes, who led at the break, held the Lions scoreless for the first 10:28 of the second half en route to a 17-0 run which put the game away. Columbia would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way. Miami was able to overcome a poor shooting night (36.9 percent) by forcing 26 turnovers including 15 steals. The Hurricanes were able to turn the 26 turnovers into 25 points. With the Green Wave, Clark compiled a (.561) record, had six 20-win seasons, seven postseason appearances (3 NCAA, 4 NIT) and won the Metro Conference championship in He was the 1992 National Coach of the Year and a twotime Metro Conference Coach of the Year (1991, 1992). Last season Clark finished and captured the Conference USA National Division crown. Additionally, Tulane received a bid to the NIT. Clark's career record stands at (.564) including a 2-0 record this season. Huskies head coach Rudy Keeling is in his fifth season at the helm of Northeastern and 13th season overall. IN THEIR FIRST SEASON: New Hurricane head coach Perry Clark is 2-0 to open his first season with Miami. With a win today he would tie the UM record for consecutive wins to open a season by a coach in his first season at Miami. Rice poured in a game-high 26 points to go with three rebounds, three steals and two blocks. The 26 points are the most by a freshman in a seasonopener since the rebirth of the program in 1985 and also marks the fifth highest single game total by a freshman since the program's rebirth. In addition, Rice was 5-9 from three-point range. Since the rebirth of the program in 1985 the Hurricanes have posted a 29-8 (.784) record in games in the month of November. Since 1993, the University of Miami had been almost unbeatable in the month of November registering a 20-2 (.909) record. A NEW HOME COURT: The University of Miami will play on new floor at the Miami Arena this season. The floor was donated by Dr. Eddie Dauer and Sam Burstyn and is adorned in the Hurricanes' colors of orange, green and white. MIAMI vs. NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS: Since becoming the 10th member of The BIG EAST Conference beginning with the season, the Hurricanes have compiled a (.648) record against non-conference opponents, including a mark (.759) at the Miami Arena. VS THE STATE OF FLORIDA: With its win over Florida Atlantic on November 18, Miami improved its record against teams from the state of Florida to (.671). Miami has won 23 consecutive games against teams from the state of Florida. Miami has not lost to a Florida school since a season opening loss to Florida International on Dec. 1, STREAKING: Miami defeated Florida Atlantic on November 18 to extend its current winning streak over the Owls to 14 games. The streak ranks as the fifth longest over one opponent in UM history. Miami has advanced to post-season play in five of the last six seasons including three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. HURRICANES EARN SHARE OF BIG EAST TITLE: With its win over St. John's in last season's regular season finale, the University of Miami earned a share of the BIG EAST regular season title. The BIG EAST title was the first for Miami and the Hurricanes first conference title of any kind since the season. That season the Hurricanes went 10-0 to win their eighth straight Florida Intercollegiate Conference championship. The last time Miami recorded at least six straight winning seasons was the campaign when the Canes registered their 10th straight winning season. LATE SEASON HEAT WAVE: Over the last two seasons Miami has been nearly unbeatable in the month of February registering a 15-1 (.938) record. Miami went 7-1 in the month of February last season while going 8-0 in SEEING 20-20: Miami's 23 wins this season gave the Hurricanes' their second consecutive 20-win season. In the preseason polls, Miami received two votes in the Associated Press college basketball poll and four votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll. 7 HURRICANE DEFENSIVE NOTES DEFENDING THE BIG EAST: Last season the Hurricanes led the BIG EAST in scoring defense (58.2 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.377) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.259). Miami has led the league in field goal percentage defense for two straight seasons and its 58.2 ppg allowed this season established a new BIG EAST record. The league will be split into two seven-team divisions with each team playing divisional opponents both home and away. All teams will also play four interdivisional games (two home, two away).
