ASU was whistled for 16 penalties for 100 yards, including several in the red zone. Still, ASU was in the game and had chances to go ahead late in the contest. Trailing 13-7 after halftime, ASU s first chance in the second half came when ASU s Brian Flagg forced a fumble by Julius Crosslin midway through the third quarter that was recovered at the OSU 36 by Khayyam Burns. But the Indians squandered a chance deep inside Cowboy territory after a fumble that was recovered for a loss and two incomplete pass forced ASU to punt. On the ensuing series for the Cowboys, penalties and negative plays left OSU punting from its own end zone and got off a bad punt. ASU s James Johnson grabbed the punt at the OSU 41 and returned it 15 yards to set the Indians up at the Cowboy 29. ASU again failed to move the ball and, after three straight plays, was forced to punt. The next OSU drive started with 2:30 left in the third quarter, and again the Cowboys couldn t get things going offensively. On third and 14, OSU quarterback Bobby Reid, making his first collegiate start, fumbled the ball that was eventually recovered by ASU s Quinton Thomas, again inside the OSU 20. A pair of penalties, a Shermar Bracey two yard run and a sack of Noce of 4 yards left the Indians staring at third and goal from the OSU 9. Noce s next pass missed its target and left Eric Neihouse attempting a 26- yard field goal attempt that the senior nailed. That made the score 13-10, but three straight missed opportunities for possible touchdowns proved to be costly. The Indians out-gained the Cowboy offensively on the night, tallying 322 yards to 273 for OSU. ASU also dominated time of possession (35:07 to 24:53) and limited the Cowboys to just 3-of-12 on third down conversions. Aside from Warren s offensive heroics, Noce played well again for the Indians, completing 11 of 24 pass attempts for 122 yards. Noce also rushed for ASU s only touchdown of the day. THE LAST TIME OUT: JONESBORO (9/2/06) -- Reggie Arnold rushed for 140 yards and scored a 17-yard touchdown in his first-ever collegiate football game to lead Arkansas State (1-0) past Army (0-1), 14-6, Saturday night at Indian Stadium. Army got on the scoreboard first courtesy of a 26-yard field goal by Austin Miller in the first quarter with 8:19 showing on the clock. Arnold, a 5-9, 217-pound redshirt freshman, found his way into the end zone with 3:52 left in the second quarter for the score. Kicker Josh Arauco s extra point put the Indians on top, 7-3. ASU s other score came on a 10-yard run by Hewitt at the 11:54 mark in the third quarter. Miller added another field goal late in the fourth quarter to end the scoring. ASU rolled up 319 yards of total offense including 222 yards on the ground and 97 yards through the air. Army finished the game with 164 yards of offense. Hewitt and Leonard combined to connect on 11 of 16 passes. Chris Miller led all Indian receivers with four catches for 21 yards. Army quarterback David Pevoto completed 12 of 23 for 95 yards and two interceptions and the Black Knights ground game was led by Wesley McMahand with 13 carries for 35 yards. 8 HEAD COACH STEVE ROBERTS No one thought it would come so soon... Arkansas State University earned a Sun Belt Conference championship and was the league representative in the 2005 New Orleans Bowl. When Steve Roberts took over the program in December 2001, he impressed everyone with his wide-eyed enthusiasm and limitless energy. And, most of all, they believed that Roberts would bring success to the Indian football program. But, most people wouldn t put a timetable to that hope and most will tell you that four seasons may be too soon for such an accomplishment. But, it wasn t. Roberts and his staff weren t going to settle for five, six, or seven seasons to pass before the Indians would be ready. They were ready in Roberts is that way. Take a look at the ASU football facilities a new training room, weight room, locker room, recruiting room, and uniforms. And, that was last year. Now, it s state-of-the-art ProGreen turf on the field and a repeat academic team award. Who knows what lies in the future? One thing is for sure Steve Roberts will not rest until ASU has the type of Division I-A football program that everyone can be proud of. The only thing that hasn t changed for Roberts, his staff and team is the base philosophy of Indian football. He may have lost some very fine players and fine young men from the 2005 squad to graduation, but don t underestimate him and his cache of weapons. You will never hear this head coach moan and groan... a positive attitude is the name of his game. And, after four seasons, he has made believers out of a lot of Indian football fans. Roberts came to Arkansas State University and brought with him a fresh enthusiasm, energy, and an I Will philosophy that has been adopted by everyone associated with the program. I Will became the rallying cry as Roberts and his staff charged ahead through a grueling 13-game schedule in 13 weeks with no open date in his inaugural season and came within 11 points of winning the Sun Belt Conference championship and playing in the Sun Belt Conference prize the New Orleans Bowl. ASU ended the season with a record of 6-7 and finished third in the league rankings. That tied the most conference wins since rejoining Division I-A in The Indians finished in the top ten turnarounds by Division I-A football schools for improving football records after finishing 2-9 in Also, attendance increased significantly in The 2003 season saw a lot of success as well. Attendance increased even more, two defensive linemen ended up in the National Football League, the team won the Sun Belt Conference academic award, and so on, and so on, and so on. The 2004 season exploded when it came to fan involvement. Take a look at the Memphis game...a record crowd of 30,427 and a sea of red to cheer on the Indians. There was also accolades for national and Sun Belt honors for players, and one player signed a contract with the NFL Seattle Seahawks. After his first season as the Indians football chief, Roberts became the first ASU head coach since Gene Harlow (in 1955) to win at least six games in his first year as a head coach. Also, ASU s two road wins at Louisiana-Monroe and Idaho were the most since The 40-year-old Roberts, a native of Little Rock, was named Arkansas State s 26th head football coach on December 21, 2001, to bring full circle his coaching odyssey from his home state through Louisiana and back. But, the trek has been a successful one, including an 8-4 record and national ranking in Division I-AA in 2000 at Northwestern (La.) State. Roberts spent two seasons at NSU where he and his staff and team took on a tough schedule which included a overtime upset at TCU. While at NSU, Roberts was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award. Prior to going to NSU, Roberts served as the head coach and defensive coordinator at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia from While there, his 1997 team won the Gulf South Championship, earning him Gulf South Coach of the Year honors. The Muleriders finished with a cumulative record of 26-5 from , including 9-1 in 1999, 8-2 in 1998 and 9-2 in During that span, his teams enjoyed top conference rankings in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense and total defense. At SAU, he also served as the defensive secondary coach and recruiting coordinator from before being named head coach. Academically, his program ranked first in academic achievements in the Gulf South Conference three seasons. (9/2/06) Reggie Arnold rushed for 140 yards and scored a 17-yard touchdown in his first-ever collegiate football game to lead Arkansas State (1-0) past Army (0-1), 14-6, Saturday night in Indian Stadium. Despite a few mistakes, ASU appeared to dominate the game with tough defense and a solid offensive performance behind the efforts of the Indians two quarterbacks, Travis Hewitt and Corey Leonard. The 6-1, 210-pound Hewitt started the ball game and Leonard, a pound redshirt freshman came in on the Indians third possession. ASU s other score came on a 10-yard run by Hewitt at the 11:54 mark in the third quarter. Miller added another field goal late in the fourth quarter to end the scoring. Defensively, the Tribe was paced by safety Tyrell Johnson with nine total stops, followed by tackle Jamarrow James and linebacker Josh Williams, with seven each. Williams played his first game since the 2004 season. Free safety Jordan Murray led the Black Knights with 12. Following the win, ASU students and fans stormed the playing field and easily tore down the goal posts on both ends. The incident was the first time in the stadium s 31-year history.
