LAST WEEK In last week s preseason opener in Seattle, the Titans jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with a touchdown drive by the offensive starters. However, the Seahawks went on to score 20 consecutive points, and a late Titans rally was not enough to prevent a defeat. The Titans scored touchdowns on a pair of one-yard runs. Chris Johnson reach the end zone to cap his brief, five-carry evening, and rookie LeGarrette Blount scored the other Titans touchdown in his preseason debut. However, it was Javon Ringer who led the team in rushing. The second-year running back led the squad with 60 yards on seven carries, including a long run of 46 yards. Vince Young was one of many Titans starters to play just two series. He completed five of six passes for 78 yards and one interception before allowing Chris Simms and rookie Rusty Smith to finish the game at quarterback. Back-up Kerry Collins was given the evening off. Defensively, Titans highlights included sacks by defensive ends Jason Babin and Eric Bakhtiari and interceptions by cornerbacks Ryan Mouton and Alterraun Verner. The Cardinals opened last week at home against the Houston Texans. After falling behind 16-0, the Cardinals scored 19 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win the game Starting quarterback Matt Leinart completed six of seven passes for 49 yards in limited action. He was relieved by Derek Anderson and later by John Skelton, whose 15-yard touchdown pass to Jason Wright gave the Cardinals the win.

Of all opponents that have been in existence since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, the Cardinals, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles have played the Oilers/Titans the fewest amount of times nine games each. The Cardinals lead the series 5-4, but the Titans won the most recent meeting in There have been just two Titans-Cardinals games (2005 and 2009) between the clubs in their current incarnations the Cardinals played in St. Louis from (they played in Chicago prior to that), and the Titans were the Houston Oilers ( ) and Tennessee Oilers ( ) prior to taking their current name in In the 2005 game, which was played at Sun Devil Stadium, Billy Volek started at quarterback instead of Steve McNair, who was out with a sore back. Volek passed for 198 yards, one touchdown and one interception before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with a concussion. Matt Mauck was called upon to complete the game but fell short in a defeat. In the most recent matchup on Nov. 29, 2009, the Titans needed a late 99-yard touchdown drive to clinch a victory against the Cardinals at LP Field. Led by quarterback Vince Young, the Titans converted three times on fourth down on the game-winning drive, including a 10-yard touchdown pass from Young to Kenny Britt with no time remaining. On Nov. 1, 1970, in the first-ever matchup between the Oilers and Cardinals, the Cardinals won by a score of It stood as the largest shutout loss in the history of the Oilers and Titans until 2009 and began a three-game winning streak for the Cardinals against the Oilers (1970, 1974 and 1979). The Oilers then won consecutive games (1985 and 1988) before exchanging victories in the 1990s (Cardinals won in 1994, Oilers in 1997). The Cardinals were founded in 1898, making the team the United States oldest professional football franchise still in existence. In 1920, they became a charter member of the National Football League (then the American Professional Football Association). They share a distinction with the Chicago Bears of being the only two of 11 charter members still operating today. The Cardinals have played as the Morgan Athletic Club, the Normals, Racine Cardinals, Chicago Cardinals, St. Louis Cardinals, Phoenix Cardinals and Arizona Cardinals. Arizona Cardinals 17 at Tennessee Titans 20 Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009 LP Field, Nashville, Tenn Final Arizona Cardinals Tennessee Titans TITANS-CARDINALS: THE LAST MEETING The Titans used a 99-yard touchdown drive in the game s final minutes to defeat the Arizona Cardinals at LP Field. Trailing 17-13, the Titans took over on their own one-yard line with 2:37 on the clock in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Vince Young directed the team down the field, completing nine of 16 pass attempts for 94 yards and rushing for an additional six yards on the drive. The longest play of the series was a 19-yard completion to tight end Bo Scaife on a pass that was tipped by the Cardinals at the line of scrimmage. In addition to one third down conversion, the Titans converted three fourth downs on the drive. Kenny Britt (10-yard reception) and Lavelle Hawkins (13-yard reception) converted the first two fourth down attempts. With six seconds on the clock, the Titans faced a fourth-and-goal from the 10-yard line. Young then found Britt in the back of the end zone for the game-winning score as time expired. The Titans held the lead for most of the game and got on the scoreboard first. After a three-and-out by the Cardinals on their initial drive, the Titans moved into scoring territory thanks to a 29-yard pass from Young to Nate Washington. Rob Bironas then completed the drive with a 52-yard field goal. That would be the only score of the first quarter. The Titans second drive used almost half of the first quarter and lasted into the second quarter. Bironas capped the 89-yard drive with a 24-yard field goal nearly nine minutes (8:55) after the drive began. With 1:55 on the clock in the second quarter, Arizona s Neil Rackers cut the lead in half with a 41-yard field goal. A late charge by the Titans at the end of the half ended when Young was sacked on the Arizona 19-yard line. The teams exchanged punts to begin the third quarter. Then, on second-and-10 from the Tennessee 15-yard line, Titans running back Chris Johnson took a handoff and raced 85 yards for a touchdown. Kenny Britt caught the game-winning touchdown pass against the Cardinals. However, on the ensuing kickoff, LaRod Stephens-Howling scored on a 98-yard return, quickly cutting the Titans lead to With 12:20 on the clock in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals took their first lead of the game when Tim Hightower crossed the goal line on a sixyard touchdown run. With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Young and Britt connected on a 51-yard pass. However, at the conclusion of the play, Arizona cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie forced a fumble, and Bryant McFadden recovered the ball for the Cardinals. The Titans defense forced a three-and-out, but a 64-yard punt by Ben Graham pinned the Titans at the one-yard line, setting the stage for the dramatic game-winning surge. The Titans total of 532 net yards included 154 rushing yards by Johnson, 387 passing yards by Young and 128 receiving yards by Britt.

9 Titans vs. Cardinals Page 9 LAST WEEK S GAME Tennessee Titans 18 at Seattle Seahawks 20 Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 Qwest Field, Seattle, Wash Final Tennessee Titans Seattle Seahawks LAST WEEK vs. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS The Titans opened the 2010 preseason with a loss to the Seahawks at Qwest Field. After trimming a 13-point deficit to two in the fourth quarter, the Titans had an opportunity to drive for a game-winning field goal, but a pass by rookie Rusty Smith was intercepted by Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor with less than a minute on the clock. The Titans jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with a 10-play, 79-yard opening drive. A screen pass that fullback Ahmard Hall turned into a 28-yard gain and then a 17-yard pass from Vince Young to Justin Gage helped give the Titans a first-and-goal at the one-yard line. The Seahawks denied Chris Johnson on consecutive carries, but on his third attempt, he was able to cross the goal line for a one-yard touchdown. Young played two series, totaling five completions on six attempts for 78 yards and one interception. Chris Simms came on in relief and played until near the end of the third quarter. The starting defense for the Titans limited the Seahawks to one first down and no points on their first two drives, but on the third the Seahawks cut into the Titans lead with a 44-yard field goal by Olindo Mare. On the Seahawks next series, quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, who was in the game in relief of starter Matt Hasselbeck, completed a short pass to wide receiver Mike Williams. After the catch, however, Williams evaded cornerback Ryan Mouton and raced to the end zone for a 51-yard score and a 10-7 lead. Mouton rebounded by collecting an interception that helped prevent a score on the next Seahawks drive. From the Titans 24-yard line, Whitehurst s pass to Williams sailed into the arms of Mouton, who then raced 11 yards on the return. The Seahawks began the third quarter with a 12-play, 50-yard drive and took a 13-7 lead on a 48-yard field goal by Mare. On their next series, the Seahawks marched 66 yards on eight plays, including a 36-yard pass from Whitehurst to Deon Butler on fourth and two. Javon Ringer recorded a 46-yard run against the Seahawks. They scored three plays later on a four-yard pass from Whitehurst to rookie tight end Anthony McCoy. With Smith in the game at quarterback, the Titans drove 45 yards and got back on the scoreboard with a 47-yard field goal by Rob Bironas, making the score Later in the fourth quarter, Titans rookie cornerback Alterraun Verner dove to intercept a J.P. Losman pass, giving Tennessee possession at the Seahawks 28-yard line. Six plays later and helped by a pass interference penalty in the end zone on third down rookie running back LeGarrette Blount scored on a one-yard run with less than five minutes remaining. Down by four, the Titans elected to try for a two point conversion and succeeded when Smith found Marc Mariani open in the end zone. The Seahawks took more than three minutes off the clock before having to punt. Then, Chancellor s interception ended any hopes that remained for the Titans. FIRST-DRIVE SUCCESS: On the first drive of the game and the preseason the Titans offense drove 79 yards on 10 plays and scored on a one-yard run by Chris Johnson. On the drive, quarterback Vince Young completed all four of his pass attempts for 70 yards. The long play of the drive was a 28-yard gain on a screen pass to fullback Ahmard Hall. SCRATCHES: Several players did not take the field in Seattle due to injuries: wide receiver Damian Williams; nickel defensive back Vincent Fuller; cornerbacks Tye Hill and Cortland Finnegan; safety Nick Schommer; linebackers David Thornton and Stanford Keglar; defensive tackle Tony Brown; and defensive ends William Hayes and Derrick Morgan. Quarterback Kerry Collins did not play but was not injured. Defensive end Kareem Brown also missed the game as a coach s decision. STARTERS PLAYING TIME: Most offensive starters for the Titans played until late in the first quarter or early in the second quarter. Running back Chris Johnson played only the first series and carried five times for seven yards and a one-yard touchdown. Quarterback Vince Young played two series, completing five of six passes for 78 yards and an interception. The starting offensive line was in the game for three drives, including one series with Chris Simms at quarterback. Defensively, the starters playing time varied from three series to the entire first half. BABIN SACK IN FIRST APPEARANCE: In his first appearance in a Titans uniform, defensive end Jason Babin notched a sack, dropping Matt Hasselbeck for a seven-yard loss in the first quarter. Babin was acquired during the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. LONG RUN BY RINGER: Second-year running back Javon Ringer made the most of his opportunity after entering the contest early in the first half. The second-year running back totaled seven carries for 60 yards, including a long of 46. NOTES FROM LAST WEEK S GAME MOUTON INTERCEPTION: Cornerback Ryan Mouton provided one of the highlights of the first half by the defense, snaring a Charlie Whitehurst pass deep in Tennessee territory. The second-year cornerback was also credited with four tackles and a total of two passes defensed in the game. FAKE PUNT: The Titans executed a fake punt in the first half. On fourthand-three from his own 35, punter Brett Kern took the snap and lofted a pass to Ahmard Hall for 16 yards. It was the second consecutive preseason opener in which the Titans succeeded on a fake punt. In the 2009 Hall of Fame Game against the Bills, then-titans punter A.J. Trapasso ran for a score from punt formation. VERNER INTERCEPTION: In his first career preseason game, rookie cornerback Alterraun Verner recorded an interception. The fourth-round pick, who tied for seventh in UCLA history with 13 career interceptions, made a leaping grab of a J.P. Losman pass in the fourth quarter. Seattle challenged that the ball hit the ground, but the ruling on the field was upheld. QUARTERBACK ROTATION: Chris Simms entered at quarterback when Vince Young left the game after two drives. Simms played until late in the third quarter, when rookie Rusty Smith entered to see his first career preseason action. Back-up quarterback Kerry Collins did not dress for the game (coach s decision). RETURN GAME: Seventh-round Marc Mariani handled the majority of the return duties. The University of Montana receiver handled three punts for 25 yards (8.3 average) and four kickoffs for 92 yards (23.0 average). Additionally, running back Alvin Pearman fielded one punt and one kickoff. NEWEST PLAYERS IN ACTION: Although they were just added to the roster on Thursday (Aug. 12), defensive ends Chris Harrington and Raheem Brock both saw action in the game. Brock was credited with three tackles.

NFL rules limit teams to 80 total players on active and reserve lists. Clubs must trim their active rosters twice prior to the start of the regular season. On Aug. 31, three days after the Titans third preseason game, the roster can have a maximum of 75 active players. On Sept. 4, two days after the fourth and final preseason game, the NFL will mandate active rosters reach their regular-season limit of 53 players. Players placed on reserve lists such as Injured Reserve do not count towards the 53-man active roster limit. After the final cutdown, an eight-player practice squad may be established as early as Sept. 5. LOOKING AHEAD IN 2010 The Titans might have one of the toughest paths to success in 2010 if past results are an indication of what lies ahead. Their 16 opponents in 2010 went a combined during the 2009 regular season for a winning percentage of.547. That ties the AFC South rival Houston Texans for the most difficult schedule in the NFL. In addition to home and road games against each of their AFC South rivals, the Titans will face every team from the AFC West and every team from the NFC East. Additionally, every team has two conference games scheduled based on order of finish within its respective division. Home dates are set with the Texans (9-7), Jacksonville Jaguars (7-9), Denver Broncos (8-8), Indianapolis Colts (14-2), Oakland Raiders (5-11), Philadelphia Eagles (11-5), Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7) and Washington Redskins (4-12). On the road, the Titans will face the Dallas Cowboys (11-5), Texans, Colts, Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs (4-12), New York Giants (8-8), Miami Dolphins (7-9) and San Diego Chargers (13-3). The Titans will play five total games against playoff teams in The Colts (two games), Cowboys and Chargers all won their respective divisions, while the Eagles were a Wild Card team. He begins the 2010 campaign hoping to build on a successful stretch in 2009 in which he re-established himself as the team s signal caller. After the Titans opened the 2009 season with an 0-6 record, Young entered the starting lineup and led the squad to an 8-2 record over the final 10 weeks of the season. His 82.8 passer rating established a new career high and represented the 11th-best rating by a Titans/Oilers quarterback since His yards per attempt (7.3), touchdown percentage (3.9) and interception percentage (2.7) also were the best of his career. At the conclusion of the season, he was named to his second Pro Bowl as an alternate. In 2006, the 6-foot-5, 232-pound signal caller set virtually every rookie passing record for the franchise, including passing totals of 2,199 yards and 12 touchdowns. Additionally, he gained 552 yards on the ground, becoming the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era (1966-present) to rush for 500 yards as a rookie. The Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year directed a six-game winning streak that was the third-longest by a rookie quarterback since the 1970 merger. Then, in 2007, Young became the youngest quarterback in franchise history to lead his team to the playoffs.
