3 TITANS-COLTS SERIES HISTORY This week s game is the first time the Titans and Colts have met on Monday Night Football as inhabitants of their current cities. They met once before on Monday night on Nov. 1, 1976, a game the Baltimore Colts won over the Houston Oilers The Titans rivalry with the Colts has become one of the team s most hotly contested match-ups in recent seasons. The teams are split in the four meetings since October 2006, and the four games have been decided by a total of 12 points. Most recently, in last year s regular season finale in Indianapolis (Dec. 30), the Titans needed a win to secure a postseason berth. With the Colts having already clinched their fifth consecutive division title, the Titans escaped with a victory, propelling them to the Wild Card round of the playoffs. Quarterback Kerry Collins came off the bench to lead two drives for field goals in the fourth quarter. In 2002, the first year the Titans and Colts met as opponents in the newly-formed AFC South, the Titans won both games on their way to claiming the first AFC South title. The Colts then won seven consecutive meetings, taking both games in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons and the first meeting in Indianapolis has taken the division crown every year since The Titans and Colts have met only once in the postseason. The Titans won by a final score of in a Divisional Playoff game against the Colts on Jan. 16, Eddie George rushed for 162 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown run to help lead Tennessee during its run to Super Bowl XXXIV. The teams first met in 1970 following the AFL-NFL merger. The then-baltimore Colts defeated the then-houston Oilers during the Colts run to a Super Bowl V Championship. In 27 all-time meetings, the Colts lead the series TITANS-COLTS: THE LAST MEETING Tennessee Titans 16 at Indianapolis Colts 10 Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007 RCA Dome, Indianapolis, Ind Final Tennessee Titans Indianapolis Colts The Titans earned the sixth and final AFC playoff berth of the 2007 season with a win against the Colts in the final regular season game at the RCA Dome. Three field goals by Rob Bironas, including a go-ahead 54-yarder, provided the winning margin for the Titans, who improved their record to The Titans opened the contest with an 11-play, 79-yard drive that consumed more than six minutes. Running back LenDale White gained 36 yards on five carries, including consecutive runs of 13 and 15 yards on the first two plays from scrimmage. Chris Brown capped the scoring drive with an eight-yard touchdown run. The Colts moved the ball down the field on their first possession, but safety Michael Griffin knocked the ball loose from wide receiver Reggie Wayne at the Tennessee 19-yard line. The fumble was recovered by linebacker David Thornton. The Colts next drive also stalled on the Tennessee 19-yard line, and Adam Vinatieri kicked a 37-yard field goal to cut the Titans lead to 7-3 four minutes into the second quarter. Jim Sorgi took the reigns at quarterback on the next series for the Colts, who already had secured the second overall seed in the playoffs. Starter Peyton Manning was 14-of-16 for 95 yards before leaving the game. Neither team scored again until the third quarter. Linebacker Rocky Boiman recovered a fumble by White to give the Colts the ball on Tennessee s 30-yard line. An unnecessary roughness penalty on the Titans on the next play moved the ball to the 15-yard line, and three plays later Sorgi found Craphonso Thorpe for a three-yard touchdown strike and Indianapolis first lead of the game at The Colts tallied three of their four second-half first downs on the short drive. But the Titans turned each of their next three drives into successful field goal attempts. The first of those drives was interrupted by an injury to starting quarterback Vince Young, who left the game and would not return with a right quadriceps injury. Kerry Collins entered in relief and helped finish the 56-yard drive that took more than eight minutes off the clock. Bironas made a 40-yard field goal to tie the game. The Titans were pinned back on the six-yard line to begin the next drive, their first of the fourth quarter. Collins completed a seven-yard pass to Roydell Williams on third-and-six to continue the drive, which ended with a 54-yard field goal by Bironas. Bironas added a 33-yard field goal with 2:56 remaining on the clock, giving the Titans their final score in the victory. The Titans gained 356 total yards in the game to the Colts 194 yards, and the Titans controlled the ball for 35:32. They converted eight of 15 third-down attempts (53 percent). The quarterback duo of Young (14-18, 157 yards) and Collins (10-13, 106 yards) completed 24 of 31 pass attempts for 263 yards and no interceptions (101.9 combined passer rating). Justin Gage led all receivers with a career-high 104 yards on seven receptions, and White recorded a game-high 45 rushing yards. White accounted for 149 yards on 17 carries (8.8 avg.), including an 80- yard touchdown that tied for the third-longest run in franchise history. His teammate, running back Chris Johnson, led the club with 168 yards on 18 carries (9.3 avg.), including a 66-yard touchdown with four minutes remaining in the game that gave Tennessee its final score of the day. It was the first time for the franchise since Nov. 27, 1977 (Rob Carpenter, Ronnie Coleman) in which two rushers gained 100 yards in the same game. Quarterback Kerry Collins directed the team in the passing game, connecting on 11 of 18 passes for 123 yards and no interceptions. Meanwhile, the Chiefs were limited to 58 yards on the ground and 235 yards through the air. Starting quarterback Brodie Croyle passed for 63 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. His replacement, Damon Huard, exited in the fourth quarter with an injury, giving way to third-stringer Tyler Thigpen. With the Titans enjoying a shutout through three quarters, Thigpen led the Chiefs on a pair of scoring drives. Nick Novak made a 26-yard field goal to end a drive, and Thigpen scrambled for a 14-yard touchdown with less than three minutes remaining. The Titans gained control of the game early. On their opening possession, they went 49 yards on 10 plays and scored their first points on a 49- yard field goal by Rob Bironas. Then, on their second drive, they needed six plays to go 53 yards and find the end zone. After a 28-yard pass from Collins to tight end Alge Crumpler, White delivered his first score of the game on a six-yard carry. The score remained 10-0 until late in the second quarter. The Titans TITANS CONTINUE TO WIN: With the win, the Titans accomplished the following: they are 6-0 for the first time in franchise history; have an NFL-leading streak of nine consecutive regular season victories (third best in team history); and have not allowed an opposing team to score more than 17 points in nine consecutive regular season games (first in team history). 10 Jeff Fisher is in his 14th full season as Head Coach of the Tennessee Titans and his ninth as Executive Vice President. Fisher holds the franchise record for wins by a head coach and is the NFL leader in tenure with one team among active coaches. He was named interim head coach for the last six games of the 1994 season and has been in his current post ever since, leading the team through the transition from its final years in Houston to some of the club s greatest successes in Tennessee. Over the previous nine seasons ( ), Fisher guided the franchise to five playoff appearances (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007) only five teams (Indianapolis, New England, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and Seatte) had more appearances during that time. It was the fifth time in Fisher s tenure he coached the team to 10 or more wins in a playoff season. The team followed the path of previously successful Jeff Fisher teams, ranking fifth in the NFL in rushing offense, fifth in the NFL in yards allowed on defense and recording a 5-3 mark on the road. Also in 2007, Fisher became the 27th head coach in NFL history and the sixth active coach to reach 120 career wins. He surpassed the career win totals of John Madden (112 career wins), Don Coryell (114) and George Allen (118) to rank 27th in league annals. No current NFL head coach has more tenure with his team than Fisher (14-plus seasons), and only the NBA s Jerry Sloan ( ) and Major League Baseball s Bobby Cox (1990) have more tenure among head coaches/managers in the four major U.S. professional team sports.
