LAST WEEK The Titans are coming off a defeat of the Texans at LP Field. Cornerback Cortland Finnegan returned his NFL-leading fourth interception of the season 99 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory. The longest interception return in team history was part of a larger defensive effort that created three turnovers and three sacks and limited the Texans to a combined 23.8 percent (five of 21) on third and fourth down. The Titans defense ranks first in the NFL in points allowed (9.7 per game) and third in yards per game (240.3). Quarterback Kerry Collins started his second consecutive game and passed for 189 yards in the win. In the process, the 14th-year signal caller became the 15th player in NFL history to eclipse 35,000 career passing yards. Tennessee s two-headed rushing attack of LenDale White and Chris Johnson played a key role. They each had 16 carries; White gained 49 yards and two touchdowns, while Johnson added 74 yards. THE VIKINGS The Vikings, who were 8-8 in 2007 under head coach Brad Childress, earned their first win of 2008 last week with a home victory over the Carolina Panthers. Veteran quarterback Gus Frerotte, in his 15th NFL season, started for the first time in 2008 and completed 16 of 28 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Running back Adrian Peterson contributed 77 rushing yards in the Vikings win. The 2007 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year has recorded 340 rushing yards through three games to rank second in the NFL (Michael Turner, 366).

3 TITANS-VIKINGS SERIES HISTORY This week s game is the 11th time the Titans and Vikings have played and the first contest played between the teams at LP Field. There is just one other team, the Arizona Cardinals, that has never played at LP Field. Tennessee carries a 3-7 all-time record against the Vikings into Sunday s contest. The Vikings began their expansion season in the NFL in 1961, one season after the Oilers helped launch the American Football League. It was not until five seasons into the 1970 NFL-AFL merger that the two teams played their first of 10 regular season games. The first Oilers-Vikings game in 1974 finished with a lopsided score of in favor of the Vikings. It is still the seventh biggest defeat for the Titans in franchise history. The Vikings finished that season with a trip to Super Bowl IX. The 1974 meeting also was the first and only game played by the Oilers at Metropolitan Stadium, which the Vikings would leave in 1982 when the Metrodome opened. At the Metrodome, the Titans have managed just one win in six outings. They were victorious there in 1992, the last time they beat the Vikings before a current four-game losing streak began. The first and only time the Vikings have played in Tennessee during the regular season was Dec. 26, On that day, the Titans hosted the Vikings in the regular season finale, a game the Vikings won by a final score of The Titans were left with an 8-8 record, while the Vikings were 15-1 and would later advance to the NFC Championship Game. That was the final game the Titans played at Vanderbilt Stadium and the final time the team would be called the Oilers. In 1999, LP Field opened and the team took the name Titans. Humphrey Metrodome, Minneapolis, Minn Final Tennessee Titans Minnesota Vikings In Week 7 of the 2004 regular season, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Tennessee Titans 20-3 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome to drop Tennessee s record to 2-5. The beginning of the game appeared promising for the Titans. Their defense forced a quick three-and-out after Keith Bulluck recorded a seven-yard sack of quarterback Daunte Culpepper. The Titans took control at the 50-yard line. They moved the ball in position to give Gary Anderson a 40-yard field goal attempt, which he made to provide the Titans with an early lead. However, it would be the only points of the day for the Titans. The Vikings responded with a 66-yard drive that set up Morten Andersen s 29-yard field goal. It was the first of two field goals during the game for Andersen, who entered the contest second in NFL history in field goals behind only Tennessee s Anderson. Misfortune found the Titans on the first play of the second quarter. While attempting a pass intended for Derrick Mason, quarterback Steve McNair was hit in the chest and was removed from the game. McNair had two completions for two yards before exiting. His replacement was Billy Volek, who would complete 17 of 36 passes for 190 yards. The Vikings forced three costly interceptions by Volek and additionally recovered a Titans fumble. Soon after the McNair injury, the Vikings took control and appeared to give the ball back to the Titans when Culpepper was intercepted by safety Lamont Thompson. However, a defensive offsides penalty nullified the turnover, and four plays later, Vikings running back Mewelde Moore crossed the goal line on a one-yard touchdown run. Later in the second quarter, Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield returned an interception 30 yards, setting up another touchdown drive. After Culpepper found receiver Marcus Robinson for a two-yard touchdown connection, the Vikings had a 17-3 lead as the first half came to a close. After halftime, the Titans had opportunities to climb back into the game. Volek completed a series of passes that led the Titans to the Minnesota fiveyard line. On a second-and-goal play, Volek tried fit a pass to Mason but was intercepted by linebacker Raonall Smith in the end zone. On Tennessee s next possession, the Titans again were poised to score. Mason caught an 18-yard pass that put the ball on the Vikings 2. However, the play was called back on an unnecessary roughness penalty, and the Titans would eventually punt from the 40-yard line. With Culpepper s passing efficiency and Moore s rushing, the Vikings controlled much of the remainder of the game. Culpepper completed 24 of 30 passes for 183 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Meanwhile, Moore recorded a game-high 138 rushing yards on 20 carries. The Vikings controlled the ball for more than 32 minutes. The 2004 Titans-Vikings game featured the NFL s top two all-time scorers, Gary Anderson (left) and Morten Andersen (right). 3

6 Houston Texans 12 at Tennessee Titans 31 Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008 LP Field, Nashville, Tenn Final Houston Texans Tennessee Titans LAST WEEK vs. HOUSTON TEXANS The Titans won their third consecutive game to open the 2008 season, defeating the Houston Texans at LP Field. With a minute remaining in the game, cornerback Cortland Finnegan intercepted a Matt Schaub pass at the one-yard line and raced 99 yards for a touchdown. The longest interception return in franchise history capped a day for the defense in which it forced three turnovers, recorded three sacks and had key stops inside the 20-yard line. The offense, with Kerry Collins under center, built a lead in the first half and sustained it with its rushing attack. Running backs LenDale White and Chris Johnson each recorded 16 rushing attempts, and the team totaled 154 yards on the ground. Although the Texans intercepted a pass from Collins on Tennessee s first offensive play, the Titans defense forced the Texans to kick a field goal. It was the first of six trips inside the 20-yard line for the Texans, and they came out of those trips with one touchdown and 12 total points. On the next series by the Titans, they drove 77 yards on 11 plays and scored on a two-yard touchdown run by White. The touchdown was set up by a career-long 21-yard reception by receiver Chris Davis. On the ensuing Texans possession, Titans safety Michael Griffin tallied his first of two interceptions. However, two plays later the Texans forced a fumble to regain control of the ball. They drove 66 yards and pulled within one point with a 24-yard field goal by Kris Brown, his second field goal of the game. A 17-yard run by Collins on third-and-one extended the next Titans drive. Two plays into the second quarter, Collins found tight end Bo Scaie for a nine-yard touchdown pass. The Texans answered with a six-yard touchdown run by rookie running back Steve Slaton. On the extra point attempt, Matt Turk was unable to Michael Griffin recorded two interceptions against the Texans. handle the snap, and the Titans clung to a lead. The Titans then marched 74 yards on seven plays on their second consecutive scoring drive. Collins found wide receiver Justin McCareins for a 37- yard gain, and three plays later White scored again, taking the ball across the goal line for a one-yard touchdown. They took a lead into the second half. In the third quarter, a 32-yard reception gave McCareins 90 yards in the game and led to a 44-yard field goal by Rob Bironas. The score remained into the fourth quarter. The Texans, who earlier in the third quarter failed on a fourth-and-four at the Tennessee 10, faced a fourth-and-goal at the two-yard line seven minutes into the final period. But David Thornton and Tony Brown teamed up to stop Slaton short of the goal line. On Houston s next two drives, the team s fourth-down passing attempts were intercepted, first by Griffin and then by Finnegan. The Texans converted just two of six fourth down attempts and three of 15 third down attempts in the game. WHITE FINDS END ZONE TWICE: For the third consecutive game, running back LenDale White scored at least one touchdown for the Titans. He recorded his 10th career touchdown run a two-yard gain on a fourthdown play in the first quarter to give the Titans a 7-3 lead. COLLINS OVER 35,000: With a 17-yard completion to Justin McCareins in the second quarter, quarterback Kerry Collins eclipsed 35,000 career passing yards. He became the 15th player in NFL history to reach the mark. McCAREINS THIRD-BEST TOTAL: Wide receiver Justin McCareins led the Titans with 90 yards on four receptions. During a second-quarter scoring drive, he posted receptions of 17 and 37 yards. In the third quarter he added a 32-yard catch. GRIFFIN S TWO PICKS: Safety Michael Griffin has recorded three interceptions in the past two games. Against the Texans, he led the Titans with two critical takeaways. In the first quarter, he made a juggling catch of a Matt Schaub pass as he fell to the ground. In the fourth quarter, he again picked off a Schaub pass, tallying his sixth career interception. 7 TITANS LAUNCH 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION The 2008 season marks the franchise s 10th campaign as the Tennessee Titans. A special logo (right) was commissioned to commemorate the season and will be worn as a patch on the front shoulder of all Titans game jerseys during the year. The logo features the Titans fireball logo with a 1 in front of it, creating the number 10. The numeral rests above an outline of the state of Tennessee, which has the years imprinted within its borders. The Titans kicked off their 10th anniversary celebration with the annual Titans Caravan in April. Throughout the course of the upcoming season, the theme will be featured prominently in gameday promotions and other special events. In 1999, the third season after leaving Houston, the team changed its name from the Tennessee Oilers to Tennessee Titans and moved into the 69,000-seat LP Field. The season ended with a memorable run to an AFC crown and a Super Bowl XXXIV appearance. Titans 10th Anniversary Quick Facts: Since 1999, the Titans have been to the playoffs five times. They went to the postseason after the 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007 seasons.
