1 FSU BASKETBALL AT A GLANCE: The Ferris State men s basketball team will break for the holidays before returning to action Friday and Saturday, Dec , in the Armstrong Atlantic State New Year's Tourney at Savannah, Ga. FSU takes on Georgia College & State in the opening game Friday (Dec. 29) before facing host AASU Saturday (Dec. 30). Both games will tipoff at 4 p.m. (EST) inside AASU s Alumni Arena. The annual event is sponsored by SpringHill Suites Midtown and will also include Southern Arkansas. The Bulldogs will depart by bus on the nearly 20-hour trek to Savannah Tuesday (Dec. 26). MEDIA COVERAGE: No Ferris State internet or radio broadcast coverage will be available for either non-conference game in the AASU New Year s Classic. ABOUT FERRIS STATE: Ferris State University is a NCAA Division II school located in Big Rapids, Mich., with an enrollment of 12,578. The Bulldogs are a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Directions and additional information can be obtained by contacting the Armstrong Atlantic State Athletics Office at (912) FERRIS FALLS TO USI: Ferris State played a strong opening half, but nationally fifth-ranked Southern Indiana regrouped in the second period for a triumph in the final day of action at the GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Challenge Thursday (Dec. 21) in Detroit, Mich. The Screaming Eagles used a run over the first six minutes of the second frame to take control. Ferris led the contest at halftime as the Bulldogs shot 57.7% (15-26) from the floor in the initial half of the game, which was hosted by Wayne State University. USI outscored FSU in the final period. Southern Indiana forced 18 Bulldog turnovers and nailed 12-of-24 (50.0%) three-point attempts in the victory. Freshman guard Clyde McKinney (Lansing/Everett) tallied a personal career-high 20 points in leading the Bulldogs. Senior forward Michael Daniels (Detroit/Murray-Wright) added 17 points, senior forward Terrance Shaw (Saginaw/Bridgeport) scored 12 points and sophomore guard Jessie York (Muskegon Heights) finished the game with 10 points for Ferris State. INDY TOPS FERRIS: Ferris fought back from a large first-half deficit, but saw its rally come up short Wednesday (Dec. 20) night as the Bulldogs suffered a loss to regional foe Indianapolis in opening day action at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Detroit, Mich. Against Indianapolis, Ferris fell behind at halftime as the Greyhounds shot 61.5% (16-26) from the floor in the initial half. However, FSU outscored Indianapolis in the final frame and took a one-point lead (48-47) with 8:23 to play. Indianapolis sank eight free throws in the final 50 seconds to perserve the victory. Michael Daniels recorded a personal career-high 22 points. FSU posted a second-place 13-5 mark in GLIAC North Division regular-season action after claiming back-to-back league crowns in and Ferris also received GLIAC Tournament runner-up accolades last season. TWO YEARS AGO: Ferris State capped off a banner season with a runner-up finish in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament (March 12-15) held in Findlay, Ohio. FSU reached the regional championship game for only the third time in school history. The Bulldogs, who won their second-straight GLIAC North Division Championship in , concluded the year with a 24-7 overall record and fell one game shy of advancing to the NCAA-II Elite Eight for the second time ever. FSU's 24 victories represented the third-most wins in school history. HEAD COACH BILL SALL: A 1994 Calvin graduate, fifth-year FSU head coach Bill Sall previously held assistant coaching positions at Calvin ( ), Ferris State ( ) and Hillsdale ( ) prior to being named Ferris State s 11th head coach. The Zeeland, Mich., native served as Ferris interim head coach for a portion of the campaign and led the Bulldogs to a 5-8 mark. Before joining the coaching ranks, Sall was a standout player at Calvin from He twice ( ) received second-team National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III All- America honors and led Calvin to three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA) championships, four NCAA-III Tournament bids and the 1990 NCAA-III Final Four. Sall has a current (.540) career mark. THE BULLDOG TRADITION: The campaign marks the 79th season of Bulldog men s basketball. The program began in 1925 although Ferris did not field a team from due to World War II. FSU has compiled a (.521) all-time mark. The Bulldogs have won 11 GLIAC titles, made eight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and reached the 1988 NCAA-II Elite Eight. Ferris captured a league-record four consecutive GLIAC titles from LEADING THE WAY: Among the returnees this year is Terrance Shaw, who received All-GLIAC Second Team accolades a year ago. The 6-5 Shaw averaged 13 points and a team-best 6.8 rebounds in Shaw, Michael Daniels and Julius Vines are serving as team captains this year. THE BULLDOG ROSTER: Ferris roster includes three seniors, four juniors, two sophomores and six freshmen. Eight of the 15 players are guards while the remaining seven are frontcourt players. All 15 players on the Bulldogs roster hail from Michigan. 2 MORE BULLDOG NOTES Men s Basketball Release Page 2 Dec. 22, 2006 IMPRESSIVE HISTORY: Ferris State s impressive basketball tradition includes 11 GLIAC titles, eight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and a berth in the 1988 NCAA-II Elite Eight. Ferris, which last won the GLIAC Tournament championship during the campaign, captured a league record four consecutive conference titles from FSU has won more GLIAC Championships (11) than any other league member. NATIONAL RANKINGS: FSU is not ranked in the current (Dec. 19) National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll after being listed among other teams receiving votes with four points in the preseason national rankings. Defending NCAA-II National Champion Winona State (Minn.) is presently ranked first nationally this week. GLIAC members Findlay and Grand Valley State are listed 8th and 14th, respectively, in the current rankings. Southern Indiana was ranked fifth in the poll and Quincy 20th from the Great Lakes Region. Both Armstrong Atlantic State and Georgia College & State were included among other teams receiving votes this week. TURNING IT ALL AROUND: The Bulldogs had posted only a (.204) mark in the four seasons prior to head coach Bill Sall's arrival, but have since went (.556) and claimed two divisional titles while making two NCAA-II Tournament appearances in his four previous seasons at the helm. FSU won only four games (4-22) the year before Sall arrived in COMING UP NEXT: Ferris returns home from Savannah to host St. Joseph s (Ind.) in a non-league regional home game Wednesday, Jan. 3, at FSU s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. (EST). Ferris then resumes GLIAC action Saturday, Jan. 6, by hosting Hillsdale in a 3 p.m. (EST) home encounter. TOP OF THE PACK: Last season represented the third-straight year the Bulldogs finished either first or second in the GLIAC North Division. Ferris claimed back-to-back divisional titles in and with 14-4 and 13-5 conference marks, respectively. FSU s 13-5 league ledger last season trailed only rival Grand Valley State s first place 16-2 division record. Ferris had not won a GLIAC Championship since prior to its first title run in under head coach Bill Sall. BULLDOG BITES: Terrance Shaw currently ranks third in school history with 86 blocked shots and needs only two more to tie Marcus Kennedy s ( ) second-place total of 88 blocks... Terrance Shaw earned his 500th career board against Indianapolis (Dec. 20) and is four points shy of compiling his 900th career point... FSU s current five-game losing streak is the program s longest since dropping five consecutive games during the campaign (Dec. 19-Jan. 3)... Ferris currently holds a 2-4 mark this year in games decided by 10 points or less. The Bulldogs posted a mark in such games over the two previous seasons... Thursday s game against USI was FSU s 1,800th all-time contest. STRONG CONNECTION: Three members of FSU s regular playing rotation played prep basketball at Muskegon Heights (Mich.) High School including Julius Vines, Jessie York and redshirt freshman guard Anthony Sydnor. Former Bulldog player Keith Guy ( ) serves at the Tigers head coach. Ferris freshman guard/forward Lou Williams, who s redshirting this season, also is a former Muskegon Heights player currently on the Bulldogs roster. FERRIS PICKED SECOND: Ferris State was picked to finish second in the GLIAC Men's Basketball Coaches Preseason North Division Poll. The Bulldogs totaled 27 points but had no first-place votes in the balloting, which was conducted by the conference's head coaches. Defending GLIAC North Division Champion Grand Valley State was selected as this year's divisional favorite as the Lakers recorded 36 points along with six of a possible seven first-place votes. Findlay took the top spot in the South Division with 25 points and five first-place votes. The league's 13 head coaches voted for the division in which they play. FERRIS STATE AASU NEW YEAR S CLASSIC NOTEBOOK SCOUTING GEORGIA COLLEGE & STATE: Ferris will square off against Georgia College & State for the first time in school history at the AASU New Year s Classic. The Bobcats are currently 8-1 overall this season and will play their next three outings in Savannah, including the team s first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) outing against AASU (Jan. 3). GCSU posted one of its best seasons in school history last year ( ) as the team was 22-9 overall, won a share of its fourth Peach Belt crown, advanced to the NCAA-II Tournament and reached the Division II Sweet Sixteen. Head coach Terry Sellers is in his 14th season at the Bobcats helm. Junior center Aaron Clark (6-9), who was named to the NCAA-II South Atlantic Regional All-Tourney Team last year, is the squad s leading scorer (17.2 ppg) to date. The Bobcats were picked to finish sixth in the 12-team Peach Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Both of GCSU s last two outings have been against Presbyterian (S.C.), which handed the Bobcats their lone loss of the year (Dec. 2) in Clinton, S.C. However, Georgia College & State avenged the loss with a home triumph (Dec. 13) in Milledgeville, Ga. The team will not have played in 16 days by the time Friday s game against the Bulldogs tips off. SCOUTING ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC STATE: The Pirates won their only previous meeting against Ferris State during the season by a score of in Savannah. AASU is presently 7-2 overall heading into its opening game of the New Year s Classic on Friday (Dec. 29) against Southern Arkansas. The team opens Peach Belt Conference play by hosting Georgia College & State (Jan. 3). AASU has won all four of its home games to date this campaign. Head coach Jeff Burkhamer is in his fifth season directing the Pirates program and led AASU to a 23-8 overall record last season. Armstrong Atlantic State also advanced to the NCAA-II South Atlantic Regional for the second time in the last three years during the season. Senior forward/center Bryan Taylor (6-7) currently leads the Pirates in scoring (15.3 ppg) this season. The Pirates were picked to finish second in the Peach Belt Preseason Poll. 11 MEN S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH BILL SALL T BILL SALL Head Coach Fifth Season Calvin, 1994 he Bulldog men s basketball program began its ascent to the top of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) when Bill Sall was named the program s 11th head coach on April 23, After leading the Bulldogs to an overall record in his first season at the helm, Sall guided Ferris to the GLIAC North Division Regular-Season Championship in FSU finished the season with a overall record, including a first place 14-4 league mark. In , Sall led FSU to its second-straight divisional crown and a berth in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional where the Bulldogs earned runner-up honors. FSU posted a 24-7 record and was ranked nationally. His team was overall, advanced to the NCAA-II Tournament for the second consecutive year and was the GLIAC Tournament runner-up. Sall, who served for four seasons ( ) as the assistant men s basketball coach at GLIAC member Hillsdale (Mich.) College, was the unanimous choice of a five-member search committee. In four seasons at Hillsdale, Sall was instrumental in leading the Chargers to a (.637) record and two consecutive ( ) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional tourney berths while being involved with the program s administrative, recruiting and on-floor coaching aspects under head coach Ed Douma. The Chargers reached the regional semifinals during the campaign while posting a 24-8 overall mark en route to a first-place 13-4 GLIAC South Division title. Prior to his appointment at Hillsdale, Sall was the top assistant coach at Ferris State for three seasons ( ) and spent the first year ( ) as an assistant to head coach Tom Ludwig. During the campaign, he had the opportunity to serve a portion of the season as the Bulldogs interim head coach. In his brief tenure, Ferris recorded a 5-8 start before finishing the year with a 6-20 overall record. As an assistant under former head coach Edgar Wilson, Sall helped guide FSU to a finish along with a GLIAC Tournament Championship title and a NCAA Division II National Tournament berth during the season. A nine-year collegiate assistant coach, Sall received his coaching start under Douma at his alma mater Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., from The Knights made two NCAA-III National Tournament appearances, claimed the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championship and were (.685) during his two seasons as an assistant. Before joining the coaching ranks, Sall was a standout player at Calvin from A twotime ( ) MIAA Co-Most Valuable Player, Sall currently ranks as the Knights third-leading alltime scorer with 2,063 points, which included a 70-game double-figure scoring streak. The 6-5 forward also grabbed 738 career rebounds as Calvin captured three (1986, 89-90) MIAA championships, earned four NCAA-III tournament bids and advanced to the 1990 NCAA Division III Final Four. During his collegiate career, the three-time (1987, 89-90) first-team All-MIAA honoree reached double-figure scoring in 100 of 109 outings, which presently ranks second on the all-time Calvin chart. Sall, a two-time ( ) second-team National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III All-America performer, is currently listed 10th (864 points) among the MIAA s all-time scoring leaders and is seventh (.586; ) on the league s field goal percentage chart. As a prepster, Sall attained honorable mention all-state and all-area basketball laurels at Unity Christian High School in Hudsonville, Mich. The Zeeland, Mich., native displayed his athletic versatility by winning the 1985 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class B State 400- meter run title. He also competed in cross country. A member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Sall is married to the former Karen Brower. The couple has a daughter, Delaney (born 7/19/02), and welcomed the birth of triplets Quentin, Hannah and Lydia in March 2005 (3/9).
