For Immediate Release Monday, Dec. 3, (858) The San Diego Chargers return to the playoffs for the first time since 29 when the Bolts travel to Cincinnati, Ohio and face the Bengals in a Wild Card matchup at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday, Jan. 5, 214. Kickoff is set for 1:5 a.m. PT and CBS Sports will televise the game live to a nationwide audience. Jim Nantz (play-byplay) and Phil Simms (color commentary) will call the action from the broadcast booth and Tracy Wolfson will report from the sidelines. MATCHUP The Chargers qualified for the playoffs in nearly-impossible fashion, though that doesn t accurately describe what it took for the Bolts to qualify for the postseason. Most importantly, the Chargers won their final four games of the regular-season and five of their last six. The recent stretch was capped off by a three-point overtime win over the Kansas City Chiefs, who are headed to the playoffs as the No. 5 seed in the AFC while the Chargers qualify as the No. 6 seed. The Chargers outscored the Chiefs 1- in the fourth quarter to send the regular-season finale to overtime and then drove 16 plays on the opening possession of overtime for a field goal and a lead. The Chargers defense allowed Kansas City to cross midfield but then settled down with nonstop pressure that led to the game ending on downs. The frenetic ending to last Sunday s game was only the tip of what it took for the Bolts to get to this point. Heading into Week 16 of the regular season, the Chargers found themselves needing to win their final two games (versus Oakland and Kansas City) while also needing both Miami and Baltimore to lose their final two. All six things happened with the Bolts defeating the Raiders and Chiefs, while Miami lost to Buffalo and the New York Jets and the Ravens fell to New England and the Bengals. Now the Chargers will return to the Queen City for a playoff game for just the second time in team history and for the first time since the infamous Freezer Bowl in the 1981 AFC Championship Game. That game saw temperatures dip as low as nine degrees below zero with a wind chill of minus 59. Thankfully, temperatures are scheduled to be much more agreeable to both teams as the early forecast is calling for temperatures in the mid-4s with the possibility of rain showers. Cincinnati, the No. 3 seed in the AFC, qualified for the playoffs as the champions of the AFC North. The Bengals went 11-5 this season and a perfect 8- at home, including a win over Baltimore last Sunday to lock up the No. 3 seed. Similar to the Chargers, the Bengals won five of their last six to close out the regular season. One of those wins was a 17-1 win over the Chargers in San Diego on Dec. 1. That win was Cincinnati s 14th in the series, but the Chargers still hold the all-time series edge over the Bengals, PLAYOFFS This is the 18th time in 54 seasons (since 196) that the Chargers have qualified for the playoffs and the first since 29. Head Coach Mike McCoy joins Sid Gillman (196), Don Coryell (1979 Coryell s first full season), Bobby Ross (1992) and Norv Turner (27) as the only rookie coaches in team history to lead the Chargers to the playoffs in their first season. To get there today, the Chargers beat the Chiefs in overtime, marking the first time the team has ever won a game in overtime to clinch a spot McCoy in the playoffs. It s the Bolts eighth appearance in the Wild Card Playoffs and the team is 4-3 in Wild Card games.

3 Rivers passer rating for the 213 season (15.5) was nearly 1 points higher than his career rating of 96. and his 69.5 pct. completion percentage was more than five percentage points higher than his 64.4 career ledger. Rivers will appear in his eighth playoff game with a record of 3-4, but he s 2- in Wild Card games. In seven career playoff appearances, Rivers has completed 134 of 229 (.585) for 1,82 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions. Rivers will also make his fifth start against Cincinnati, looking to even his record against the Bengals at 3-3. In his five previous starts against the Bengals, Rivers has completed 124 of 199 (.623) for 1,431 (286.2 yards per game) with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. When the teams met in San Diego on Dec. 1, Rivers went 23 of 37 for 252 yards with a touchdown and an interception. MATHEWS ENJOYS CAREER SEASON Ryan Mathews, the Chargers first overall pick in the 21 NFL Draft, will make his NFL Playoffs debut on Sunday in Cincinnati, looking to add to a season that saw him rush for a career high 1,255 yards that was the eighth-best in franchise history and seventh-highest in the NFL this season. It was also the most yards by a Chargers running back since LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 1,474 in 27. For Mathews it marked his second 1,-yard season. He topped 1 yards six times in 213, second in the NFL to Philadelphia s LeSean McCoy Mathews Mathews closed the regular season with a career-high 144 yards on 24 carries (6. avg.) against Kansas City, giving him three 1-yard efforts in the Bolts last four games. The only game during that stretch in which he didn t reach the century mark was a 99-yard effort in Week 16 against Oakland. Over the final four games of the regular season, Mathews toted the rock 17 times for 473 yards and three scores. Also impressive was that Mathews had a run of at least 2 yards in each of the Bolts last three games, including carries of 44 (second-longest of the season) and 2 yards last Sunday against the Chiefs. Mathews has firmly etched his name into the conversation for NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors. Mathews is just a year removed from a 77-yard, one touchdown season in which he was limited to just 12 games by two broken collarbones. Besides his 1,255 yards this season, Mathews 285 carries were a career high and they included a stretch in early December when the Chargers played two games in five days, thanks to a Thursday night NFL Network game, and Mathews carried 58 times for 23 yards and two touchdowns in those two games alone. Mathews also did a tremendous job securing the football this season as he lost just one fumble in 311 touches. He also rediscovered his nose for the end zone. After scoring just one touchdown in 212, Mathews has hit paydirt seven times in 213, tying his career high. Six of the touchdowns came on the ground and one through the air. THE SKILL POSITIONS The Chargers possess one of the most-talented group of skill-position players in the NFL and the statistics back that up. The Chargers (and Denver) were the only teams in the league this season to possess three players with at least 7 catches and four touchdowns. They are tight end Antonio Gates, running back Danny Woodhead and wide receiver Keenan Allen. The pacesetter was Gates, an eight-time Pro Bowl pick and the team s leading receiver seven of the last nine seasons. Gates again led the team with 77 catches, good for 872 yards (second on the team) and four touchdowns. On Nov. 24, Gates became the fourth tight end in NFL history to eclipse 7 catches and 9, total yards for his career. Playing in his 158th career game, Gates became the fastest tight end in NFL history to 9, Gates yards and the third-fastest to 7 catches. In 213, Gates posted the third-most receiving yards among tight ends and the fourth-most catches. Allen Second on the team in catches with 76 was Woodhead, just one behind Gates. Woodhead set new career highs across the board this year with his 76 catches, 65 yards and six touchdowns. He finished the regular season with the most touchdown catches among all NFL running backs and the second-most receptions. Woodhead also scored two rushing touchdowns this season to set a new career high for total TDs. Rounding out this trio of passcatchers is Allen, the team s third- Woodhead round pick in the 213 NFL Draft and a leading candidate for NFL Rookie of the Year honors. Allen set team rookie receiving records with 1,46 yards (also a team high) and 71 catches and he led all NFL rookies in 213 in catches, yards and touchdown catches (8). Allen topped the 1,-yard plateau during the Bolts regular-season finale. He bettered John Jefferson s mark of 1,1 yards in 1978 and posted the 35th 1,-yard receiving season in team history. Allen s also became the first 1,-yard rookie since the Bengals A.J. Green in 211 and he became just the fifth rookie since 2 to go over the 1, mark. In Weeks 14-16, Allen caught five touchdown passes in that three-game span, the most by a Chargers wide receiver since Twice this season, Allen racked up over 1 yards in back-to-back games. Prior to this season, a Chargers rookie hadn t achieved that feat since Don Norton in 196. THE OFFENSIVE LINE If the NFL had an Offensive Line of the Year Award, the 213 San Diego Chargers would find themselves serious candidates for this year s honors. Few teams endured as much turnover as the Chargers, as injuries forced coaches Joe D Alessandris and Andrew Dees to start six different combinations of linemen, while playing a total of 16 different combinations on the line at various points this season. Only seven times this season did the Bolts five starting offensive linemen play the entire game. Despite the 213 GAME RELEASE revolving door up front, the Chargers have allowed just 3 sacks this season, tied for the fourth-fewest sacks in the league with Chicago. One of the three teams to allow fewer sacks then the Chargers and the Bears was Cincinnati with 29. More impressively, however, the Chargers only endured 15 yards in losses as result of those sacks, which was the second-lowest total in the NFL this season. The Chargers offensive line also helped block for more than 1 yards on the ground in 12 of 16 games, four straight and seven of the last eight, including a seasonbest 186 in the regular-season finale against Kansas City. In the Chargers last four games against the New York Giants, Denver, Oakland and the Chiefs, the Bolts rushed for 144, 177, 148 and 186 yards, respectively. The leader of the line is center Nick Hardwick, who played the most snaps of any lineman this season. The 1th-year man out of Purdue, who is responsible for calling out the blocking schemes up front, was in the starting lineup every week as he s started 66 straight regular-season games at center and 135 for his career. Hardwick Another player having a season worthy of acknowledgement is guard and tackle Jeromey Clary. In his seventh season out of Kansas State, Clary was the team s starting right tackle from the end of the 27 season through 212, but when the Chargers selected D.J. Fluker with their top pick in the 213 NFL Draft, Clary unselfishly heeded the coaches request that he move to right guard, a position he hasn t played his entire career save for a few snaps during a game in Jacksonville in 27. Much like Hardwick, Clary Clary has started all but one game this season and he was a consistent force along the line. His team-first attitude was tremendous this season as he took to mentoring the young Fluker, while also seeing action at his former right tackle spot in the middle of the season, including starts there in three games when injuries forced the Bolts to shift Fluker to left tackle. Fluker, 6-5, 339, joins Keenan Allen in the conversation for postseason honors as he started all but one game and in the middle of the season, he took on the monumental task of playing left tackle in five games, including starts there against Miami, Kansas City and the Bengals. What s most impressive about that move is that Fluker hadn t played left tackle since he was a prep at Foley High School in Foley, Ala. For a young player who s just getting his feet wet in the NFL, playing left tackle means protecting the quarterback s blind side and facing some of the NFL s most-feared pass rushers. Fluker THE CHARGERS DEFENSE The Chargers played some of their best football of the season on defense down the stretch, recording 1 total takeaways in the last six games. In the second half of the season, the Chargers didn t allow a single team to record more than 4 yards of total offense after giving up more than 4 yards four times and more than 5 yards twice in the season s first eight games. The unit got particularly stingy in the month of December in helping the Bolts to a mark of 4-1. The defense gave up just yards per game in December, sixth-fewest in the NFL. And the Bolts got stingy on the scoreboard too in the final calendar month, giving up just 17.6 points per game, third-fewest in the NFL. Lastly, the Bolts got down to business by buckling down on third downs, giving up just 37.5 percent of opponent third-down conversions in December. It included a 3-of-8 performance against the New York Giants, a 2-of-9 performance at Denver, a 4-of-13 effort against Oakland and a 6-of-14 showing last Sunday against the Chiefs. Both San Diego s run and pass defense were significantly improved in December. In the middle of the month, the Bolts held the Giants, Broncos and Raiders to 92, a season-low 18 and 59 yards rushing, respectively, and San Diego s secondary, much-maligned for most of the season, racked up four interceptions and 21 passes defensed in those same three contests. The leader of this secondary is safety Eric Weddle, who last week was ticketed for the Pro Bowl for just the second time in his career. Weddle had an outstanding all-around season, topping 1 tackles to lead the team for the second year in a row, while eclipsing the century mark for the third time in seven professional seasons. He tied for the team lead with two interceptions during the regular season and he was second on the Weddle squad with 1 passes defensed. THE SPECIAL TEAMS Punter Mike Scifres went the first nine games of the season without a touchback and 3 of his 56 punts this season landed inside the 2. Kicker Nick Novak enjoyed a record-breaking season as he finished the year 34-of-37 on field goals for a new team record.919 conversion rate. It bettered the previous mark of.914 (32 of 35) set by Nate Kaeding in 29. Novak s 34 made field goals tied John Carney s single-season record set during the Bolts lone Super Bowl season in Novak finished the regular-season a perfect 11-of-11 from beyond 4 yards, while two of his three misses Novak during the season were kicks that were blocked. 213 GAME RELEASE 2

4 BOLTS FINISH 4-2 IN AWESOME AFC WEST The AFC West proved to be the NFL s best this season, putting three teams into the playoffs with the Chagers, Broncos and Chiefs all advancing to the Super Bowl Tournament. The AFC West becomes the NFL s first division since the NFC North in 211 (Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh) to advance three teams to the postseason. The Chargers closed out the 213 regular-season with four straight AFC West wins to finish the season 4-2 in the division. Since Philip Rivers became the Chargers starter in 26, the Bolts have won four AFC West titles and are (.78) in division games. San Diego has never had a losing record in the AFC West since Rivers took over as quarterback. In his first four seasons (26-9) the Bolts went 5-1 in division play. The Chargers led the NFL in 1-play drives (39) and 1-play drive points (157). Last Sunday in the win over the Chiefs that vaulted the Chargers into the playoffs, the Bolts assembled a game-winning drive that consumed 16 plays, which tied as the team s second-longest scoring drive of the season. Against the Chiefs, the Bolts had three scoring drives of 1-plays or longer that resulted in two touchdowns and the game-winning field goal. Because of their ability to sustain drives, the Bolts also led the NFL in average time of possession (32:59). Several recent games showed a huge time of possession advantage. On Dec. 8 versus New York, the Bolts held a 36:56 to 23:4 advantage, on Dec. 12 in Denver, the Bolts nearly doubled up the Broncos, 38:49 to 21:11, and on Dec. 22 against Oakland, the Bolts outpossessed the Raiders, 34:42 to 25:18. A catalyst of this success was the offense s performance on third downs as the Bolts also led the NFL in third-down conversions at 49. percent. It was the third-highest for a season in team history and the 29th highest all-time in NFL history. Another catalyst was the Chargers average of 23.3 first downs per game, which was third-highest in the NFL. All of these numbers were helped by the team s average 5.61 yards per play on first down, which was 1th-best in the NFL. JUST WIN In 22, the NFL realigned to its current eight-division format. Since then, the Chargers have positioned themselves as one of the league s most successful franchises. The Chargers 112 wins since 22 are tied with Baltimore and Denver for sixth-most in the NFL. San Diego s five division titles are tied for sixth-most since 2 and the team s six playoff appearances are tied for eighth-most. The Chargers are since 22. All-time the Chargers won the 4th game in franchise history on Sept. 15 in Philadelphia and the franchise s all-time record is Philip Rivers A common thread through most of the team s recent success has been quarterback Philip Rivers, who has led the Chargers to a mark of (.617) in the regular season as the team s starting quarterback. It includes a mark of at home and 34-3 on the road. Rivers joined the Chargers in 24 and became the team s starting signal-caller in 26. He led the team to AFC West titles in each of his first four seasons as the starter. Since 6, Rivers 32,221 passing yards are second in the NFL to New Orleans quarterback and former Chargers signal-caller Drew Brees 38,733. MR. DECEMBER While former New York Yankees superstar Reggie Jackson was known as Mr. October, in San Diego, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers might as well be known as Mr. December. Rivers propelled the Chargers into the postseason by continuing to build upon his resume as one of the NFL s all-time leading quarterbacks in the month of December. He raised his career record in December this year to 3-6 by going 4-1. Since 26, it s the most wins in the NFL by any starting quarterback in the month. New England s Tom Brady is second with 28. Rivers ranks third alltime in the month of December with a passer rating of 98.9 that is bettered only by Green Bay s Aaron Rodgers (14.8) and Denver s Peyton Manning (1.7). In 37 career December games, Rivers has completed 682 of 1,87 (62.7 pct.) for 8,337 yards with 66 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. CRUNCH TIME On Dec. 29, in the 213 regular-season finale, Philip Rivers led the Chargers to the playoffs with his 17th career fourth-quarter come-from-behind victory. The Chargers trailed Kansas City heading into the final stanza and outscored the Chiefs 1- in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime and then the Bolts won the contest in the extra session. The end marked the first time in team history that the Chargers won a game in overtime to reach the playoffs. Rivers fourth-quarter comeback against the Chiefs was his second of the season. It was also the Chargers fourth-straight win over their rivals from Kansas City. On Nov. 24 at Arrowhead Stadium, the Chargers trailed the Chiefs entering the fourth quarter before coming back to win, Here is a look at Rivers 17-career fourth-quarter come-from-behind wins. An eight-time Pro Bowl pick and five-time Associated Press All-Pro, Gates this season became only the fourth tight end in NFL history to eclipse 7 career catches and 9, career yards. Playing in just his 158th career game when he did it, Gates became the fastest tight end in league history to reach 9, yards and the third-fastest to 7 career catches. Gates Gates 719 career catches are fourth-most in NFL history among tight ends behind Shannon Sharpe (815), Dallas Jason Witten (879) and Atlanta s Tony Gonzalez s (1,325). Gates 9,193 receiving yards are also fourth behind the same three, but in the order of Gonzalez (15,127), Sharpe (1,6) and Witten (9,799). Already the Chargers all-time leader, Gates 87 career touchdown catches are second-most among tight ends in NFL history behind Gonzalez s 111, but Gates total of 6 touchdowns between he and Philip Rivers is the most in NFL history between a quarterback-tight end tandem. Where Gates has really earned his stripes is on third down as one of the mostclutch receivers the NFL has ever seen. Gates 213 career third-down catches are 23rd most in NFL history and third most among tight ends behind Gonzalez and Witten. But even more impressively, Gates has caught 3 of his 87-career touchdown passes on third down, seventh-most in NFL history among all players and second-most among tight ends. 213 GAME RELEASE 3

5 On Jan. 15, 213, Mike McCoy was named the 15th head coach in team history. In his first season at the helm in San Diego, McCoy led the Chargers to a 9-7 regular season and a Wild Card spot in the AFC Playoffs. McCoy joins Sid Gillman (196), Don Coryell (1979 Coryell s first full season), Bobby Ross (1992) and Norv Turner (27) as the only rookie coaches in team history to lead the Chargers to the playoffs in their first season. To get there, the Chargers beat Kansas City in overtime, marking the first time the team McCoy MIKE McCOY has ever won a game in overtime to clinch a spot in the playoffs. McCoy came from Denver, where he spent the seasons. In 212, he was part of a staff that saw the Broncos win the second-most games in franchise history (13). Denver won 11 straight games to end the regular season and entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the AFC. McCoy began his coaching career with Carolina in 2, joining the Panthers as an offensive assistant before being elevated to quarterbacks coach. He spent a total of nine seasons with the Panthers, serving additionally as wide receivers coach (21), quarterbacks coach (22-8) and passing game coordinator (27-8). The Panthers totaled three playoff appearances, two division titles, two NFC Championship Game appearances and a berth in Super Bowl XXXVIII (23) during McCoy s tenure on the staff. McCoy played quarterback at Long Beach State and the University of Utah before signing with Denver as an undrafted free agent in He spent his rookie season on the practice squad in Green Bay and then had stops with NFL Europe s Amsterdam Admirals, his hometown San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles before concluding his playing career with the Canadian Football League s Calgary Stampeders in McCoy was born in San Francisco on April 1, He and his wife, Kellie, have a daughter, Liv, and a son, Luke. The longest-tenured and winningest head coach in franchise history, Lewis has led Cincinnati to the postseason in four of the last five years, including a record of 11-5 and an AFC North title in 213. The Bengals went 1-6 in 212, earning a Wild Card playoff spot. They went 7-1 in the season s second half, tying the best second-half by a Cincinnati team in a 16-game season. The 212 Bengals became only the Lewis MARVIN LEWIS ninth team since 199 to go from 3-5 to the playoffs. Lewis was the consensus choice as NFL Coach of the Year in 29, after the Bengals won the AFC North and swept all six division games. The Bengals were also AFC North champions under Lewis in 25. The Bolts instead settled for a game-tying field goal, and then the Redskins won the coin toss in overtime and drove the ball 78 yards on their first possession and won the game on a four-yard touchdown run by fullback Darrel Young. Seyi Ajirotutu made a great play early in the game to keep the ball out of the end zone on a first quarter Mike Scifres punt and Darrell Stuckey downed the ball at the one-yard line...it was one of two punts on the day that Scifres hit which forced the Redskins to start drives from their own one-yard-line. Lawrence Guy had two huge plays in the game...he thwarted Washington s first offensive series of the game by blocking a 25-yard field goal try...larry English s outstanding openfield tackle on third-down forced the field goal try...then on Washington s second offensive possession, Guy batted a Robert Griffin pass into the air in the end zone and it was caught by Sean Lissemore for a touchdown, the first touchdown of Lissemore s career. Corey Liuget blocked the Chargers second field goal of the game at the end of the first half when he blocked a 59-yard attempt...it marked the first time since Oct. 19, 1975 against Kansas City that the Chargers blocked two field goals in a game. Danny Woodhead led the team and tied his season high with nine catches...he appeared to score the game-winning touchdown on a six-yard catch-and-run with 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter as he dove and appeared to glance the pylon...the touchdown call was overturned however by instant replay and the Chargers instead settled for the field goal three plays later that sent the game into overtime. Eric Weddle had a career-high 16 tackles while playing in his 1th career game. For only the second time all season all five offensive line starters played every snap of the entire game (D.J.
