EMU will take on Monmouth, North Dakota and host Idaho in the three-day Basketball Travelers Invitational, Dec. 3-5, in Moscow, Idaho. The second tournament will be closer to home as the Eagles will head to Rochester, Mich. for the Lou Henson Tournament, Dec , at the O Rena on Oakland University s campus. The Eagles take on Valparaiso at 5 p.m. and Oakland will play Rochester at 7:30 on the first day of the tourney, Dec. 20. The two first-day losing teams will meet at 5 p.m. and the championship game is slated for 7:30 p.m., Dec. 21. (This Release is Current as of Nov. 9, 2010)

3 Eastern Michigan University Men s Basketball Game Notes COACHING STAFF RETURNS INTACT: The entire EMU men s basketball staff returns from last season, led by sixth-year Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey. Associate Head Coach Derrick McDowell and Assistant Coach Carl Thomas are also back for his sixth years while Assistant Coach Andrew Moore and Director of Basketball Operations Chris Highfield are both in their third years. The only new addition to the support staff is Graduate Assistant Wendale Farrow who is entering his first year on the staff after graduating from EMU in Farrow was a two-year letterman for the Eagles as a junior-college transfer. FOR THE 114th TIME: The season is the 114th of men s intercollegiate basketball for the Eastern Michigan University Eagles. Eastern played its first season in and split games with Detroit, losing a 2-0 decision before coming back for a 4-0 victory. The season will also be the 34th for the Eagles in the Mid-American Conference. The first year of MAC play for EMU was when the then-hurons went overall and 4-9 in league play. EMU has won three Mid-American Conference titles: , , and , and the Green and White captured MAC Tournament crowns in all three of those years in addition to winning the tournament title in th MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE YEAR: The season will be Eastern Michigan University 37th in Mid-American Conference men s basketball action. EMU joined the conference in 1971, but did not get a league men s basketball schedule cleared until the season. MULTIPLE LEAGUES REPRESENTED ON EMU SCHEDULE: The Eagles nonconference schedule will have 13 different leagues represented. Detroit and Valparaiso are the only two opponents from the same league, the Horizon. All of the other opponents are the lone representatives of their conferences. Representing the Big Ten is Michigan State, the Colonial is James Madison, the Great West is North Dakota, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is Canisius, the Missouri Valley is Drake, the Northeast Conference is Monmouth, the Southern is Samford, the Summit is Oakland, the Western Athletic Conference is Idaho, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is Ferris State, the Wolverine-Hoosier representative is Madonna and the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association is Rochester College. BOWDRY IS PICK FOR MAC PRESEASON TEAM: EMU senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) has been selected to the Mid-American Conference West Division preseason first team in a vote by the MAC News Media Association. Bowdry was the only player in the MAC to average double figures in points and rebounds last year, at 16.4 ppg and 10.0 rpg. In addition, Bowdry finished the season with 16 double-doubles, the 20th best effort in the nation. CLIMBING UP THE RECORD BOOK: EMU senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) enters his senior season in the top 20 in both career scoring and rebounding. Bowdry has scored 1,258 career points to rank 17th while his 722 rebounds is good for the eighth spot. COACHING CONNECTIONS: EMU Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey is one of six head coaches with Eastern Michigan University ties currently coaching in the NCAA Division I ranks. Ramsey, a 1992 EMU graduate and former EMU assistant, joins fellow EMU graduate Stan Heath (South Florida), along with former EMU coaches Ben Braun (Rice), Keith Dambrot (Akron), Gary Waters (Cleveland State), and Tony Harvey (Texas Southern) as head coaches. Heath played for Eastern from Braun is EMU s winningest head coach after coaching from Dambrot was a member of Braun s staff from and Waters was a Braun assistant from and Harvey was an EMU assistant coach from THE CHARLES E. RAMSEY FILE Charles E. Ramsey is right where he wants to be in his sixth-year as men s head basketball coach of the Eastern Michigan University Eagles. Ramsey, an Ypsilanti native, EMU graduate, and former EMU assistant basketball coach, was named head coach of the men s basketball program at EMU, March 30, 2005, giving Ramsey his dream job. Under Ramsey s leadership the Eagles have improved every season except one and the season was a special one for his team. He directed last year s EMU squad to the best men s basketball record in 12 years with a overall mark. Eastern went to the final game of the regular season with a chance at the MAC West Division title before settling for a tie for second with an 8-8 record. The Eagles continued their excellent effort into the post season with a home win in the first round of the 2010 MAC Tournament and battled two overtimes against Akron before bowing to the Zips in the quarterfinal round. Ramsey began his return to EMU on a positive note, directing his young Eagles to a win over the University of California- Berkeley in his first game as an intercollegiate head coach, while also setting in motion his plan to return the EMU program to a place of prominence in the Mid-American Conference. After that thrilling career coaching opener against California, the Eagles went on to finish with a 7-21 record. Included in that record was the fact that the Green and White lost seven games by five points or less, displaying the competitive spirit Ramsey expects from his team every time it takes the court. In , Ramsey had three seniors earn National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court accolades. Seniors Tyler Jones, Wendale Farrow, and Zane Gay were all selected to the Honors Court after completing their eligibility in Farrow had a 3.27 GPA as a communications major while Gay posted a 3.24 GPA as a finance major and Jones had a 3.20 GPA as a sport management major. Truman) finished in the top 20 nationally in rebound average and doubledoubles in The 6-foot-6 Bowdry averaged 10.0 rebounds a game to rank 20th and his 16 double-doubles was good for a tie for 20th in the NCAA Division I rankings last season. He was the only player in the Mid-American Conference to average a double-double with a 16.4 point average to go along with his 10.0 rebound mark. He led the league in rebounding and was sixth in scoring as a second-team All-League selection last season. OUT OF ACTION: The Eagles will have three players out of action for the regular-season opener at Michigan State, Nov. 12. Point guard L.J. Frazier (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) is lost for the season after undergoing knee surgery in the first part of November. Junior guard Quintin Dailey (Las Vegas, Nev.-Bishop Gorman-Sheridan C.C.) will be out indefinitely due to the death of his father, Quintin Dailey Sr., in Las Vegas. Newcomer Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-Southeast Missouri State University) is still awaiting word from the NCAA on an eligibility appeal after leaving SEMO this past summer and enrolling at EMU this fall. SPECIAL DATES: There will be three special dates on the Eagles home schedule in The first will take place Wednesday, Nov. 17, when local schools will attend an Education Day noon game against Madonna University. The second will be Saturday, Feb. 19, in the BracketBuster game when EMU will honor the lastest group of Athletic Hall of Fame inductees in a special ceremony. The third special date will be Sunday, Feb. 27, when EMU will retire basketball great Earl Boykins jersey at halftime of the EMU- Western Michigan game. Boykins earned four letters for the Eagles, from and left as the second-leading scorer in history with 2,211 points. He was an honorable mention All-American selection as a senior. Boykins is still playing professional basketball, this season with the NBA s Milwaukee Bucks. In addition to his second-best point total, Boykins is the all-time assists leader (624) and is fifth in the EMU record books in career three-point field goals made (181).
