2 THE MAGICAL SEASON 1979 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS EARVIN JOHNSON L0OKS TO MAKE A PASS AROUND LARRY BIRD. IT WAS THE FIRST MEET- ING IN WHAT WOULD BECOME A STORIED RIVALRY BETWEEN TWO HALL-OF-FAMERS. THE STATE NEWS USED A STRAIGHT-TO-THE- POINT HEADLINE TO CELEBRATE THE TITLE. The season was truly a magical one for Coach Jud Heathcote and his Michigan State Spartans. Blending a perfect combination of individual ability, enthusiasm and teamwork, Heathcote formed a cohesive unit that captivated the nation and sellout crowds at Jenison Field House. The Spartans compiled a 26-6 overall record and went 13-5 in the Big Ten to share the league crown with Purdue and Iowa. State steamrolled through the NCAA Tournament, ending the season on top of the college basketball world with a victory over Larry Bird and unbeaten Indiana State. The squad gathered at Jenison Field House on Aug. 12, 1989, to play one more game against a team of former Spartan All-Stars. On a hot, sweltering night, the National Championship squad, led by Earvin Johnson s 25 points and 17 rebounds, topped the All-Stars, 95-93, before a sellout crowd of 10, ALL-AMERICAN EARVIN JOHNSON SCORED 24 POINTS AND GRABBED SEVEN REBOUNDS IN THE CHAM- PIONSHIP GAME AFTER RECORDING A TRIPLE DOUBLE IN THE NATIONAL SEMIFINAL AGAINST PENN. 3 SPARTAN CONQUEST 2000 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Tom Izzo repeatedly talked to his team about leaving its mark on the program. The Spartans did more than leave their mark; they set the standard by which all future Michigan State teams would be measured. Part of being a champion is winning titles, which the Spartans accomplished in winning the National Championship, a third straight Big Ten Championship and a second consecutive Big Ten Tournament title. Michigan State s three consecutive conference crowns marked only the eighth time in league history that a team has won three straight titles. A champion is also measured by its character. The Spartans displayed their relentless spirit in overcoming many different forms of adversity during the season. From playing the first 13 games of the season without All-America guard Mateen Cleaves to fighting back from significant second-half deficits in three NCAA Tournament games, Michigan State played with contagious emotion. Finishing the season 32-7, the Spartans capped their championship run with an victory over Florida on April 3, 2000, in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Michigan State became the first championship team to defeat all six of its NCAA opponents by double figures since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams. ABOVE: A.J.
