MSU - UW: Episode IV - The national semifinal matchup between Michigan State and Wisconsin marks the fourth meeting of the season for the Spartans and Badgers. MSU won the previous three contests by an average of 10.3 points. The three losses are the only blemishes on Wisconsin s record since Feb. 5. MSU has never played a team four times in the same season. 2. Big Ten Game Of The Week - For only the sixth time in 61 years of Final Fours, two Big Ten teams are in the national semifinals, most recently last season when both Michigan State and Ohio State earned berths to St. Petersburg, Fla. This will also mark the third time that the two Big Ten teams will face each other. Michigan and Illinois squared off in 1989 and Michigan and Indiana met in the 1976 championship game. 3. Thirty-Something - With the win over Iowa State, MSU reached the 30-win plateau for the second-consecutive season and only the second time in school history. The only other Big Ten team to record consecutive 30-win seasons was Indiana in 1975 (31) and 1976 (32). With one more win, Michigan State will have the most wins by a Big Ten school over a two-year period. Against Utah, MSU closed the game on a run after being tied at 45 with 14:15 remaining. In the Sweet 16, the Spartans used a 17-0 run over the final 5:55 to claim a victory. Finally, MSU rallied from a seven-point deficit to defeat Iowa State, 75-64, thanks to a 23-5 run over the last 5:49. Where Are All The Upsets? - While the 2000 NCAA Tournament has had its fair share of upsets, Michigan State s journey to the Final Four has been unaffected by the underdogs. MSU has played the highest possible seed in each game, defeating #16 Valparaiso, #8 Utah, #4 Syracuse and #2 Iowa State en route to Indianapolis. We re (the only) #1 (seed left in the NCAA Tournament) - With Duke, Stanford and Arizona all being knocked out before the Elite Eight, the Spartans were the only #1 seed to advance to the Final Four. Since the tournament was first seeded in 1979, at least #1 seed has advanced to the Final Four every season except This year marks only the eighth time that only one #1 seed remains. In four of the previous seven instances and four of the last five, the lone #1 seed captured the championship. MSU In The NCAA Tournament - Michigan State is making its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, with a record of in its 14 tournaments. MSU is making its fourth trip to the Final Four (1957, 1979, 1999 and 2000) and captured the national championship in MSU As A No. 1-Seed - Since the 1979 NCAA Tournament, when the teams were first given seeds, Michigan State has held a No. 1 seed on three occasions (1990, 1999 and 2000). In 1990, the Spartans escaped a first-round upset with a victory over No. 16-seed Murray State. They would lose to Georgia Tech, 81-80, in an overtime game in the Sweet 16. Last season, the Spartans made their way to the Final Four as a No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region. A Tournament Run Worthy Of A Recap - Michigan State advanced to the 1999 Final Four, marking only the third national semifinal appearance in school history. Earning a number one seed in the Midwest Region, the Spartans secured first- and second-round victories over Mount St. Mary s (76-53) and Mississippi (74-66). MSU defeated Oklahoma, 54-46, in the Sweet Sixteen before beating Kentucky, 73-66, to move to the Final Four. MSU Rebounds vs. Opponent Points - The Valparaiso game marked the sixth time this season the Spartans had more rebounds (39) than their opponent had points (38). The same also happened against Minnesota (45 reb., 43 points), Wisconsin (50 reb., 44 pts.), Toledo (45 reb., 33 pts.), Howard (54 reb., 45 pts.) and Northwestern (42 reb., 29 pts.). Shooting For 70 - When Michigan State scores 70 points, chances are, it is going to win. Conversely, MSU is only 9-5 when failing to reach the 70-point mark. Big Ten Tournament Recap - For the second-straight year, Michigan State followed up a regular-season conference title with a Big Ten Tournament championship. In winning three games against Iowa (75-65), Wisconsin (55-46) and Illinois (76-61), the Spartans never trailed by more than two points and did not trail in the second half of any game. Morris Peterson averaged 18.0 points and 5.7 rebounds to earn Big Ten Tournament MVP honors. Mateen Cleaves was also named to the all-tournament team. C-Bell Hits A Grand - With 12 points against Syracuse, Charlie Bell became the 29th Spartan to score 1,000 career points. Three-Peat For Mo Pete - With the win over Michigan in the regular-season finale, the Spartans grabbed a share of a thirdstraight Big Ten Championship. This is the first time for Michigan State to win three-straight titles. Only seven schools in Big Ten history have won three consecutive regular season championships for a total of eight different times. (Chicago ; Wisconsin ; Purdue and ; Ohio State ; Michigan ; Indiana ; Michigan State ). No Shame In Sharing - For anyone who would discount MSU s three-straight conference championships because the titles were not won outright, consider the following fact. Only three times in Big Ten Conference history has a team won threestraight outright titles (Wisconsin , Ohio State and Purdue ). Overall, there have been eight three-time champions. Fast Starts - Michigan State has outscored its opponents in the first half this season, for an average halftime score of By comparison, the Spartans are outscoring opponents in the second half by a total of only 178 points, an average of

9 MSU BASKETBALL NOTES * THE NCAA TOURNAMENT - FINAL FOUR, APRIL 1 & 3, 2000 * 9 Trend Reversed In NCAA - In the NCAA Tournament, the Spartans have used strong second halves to claim victory. MSU is outscoring opponents in the first half, but holds a advantage in the second half, an average of In Good Hands - Turnovers have been a major concern for the Spartans this season as the team is averaging 14.6 per game. Things are improving, however, as MSU has only 10.0 per game in the last eight contests. Limiting turnovers is key because over the past four seasons MSU has a 47-7 record when turning the ball over fewer times than its opponent. Block Party - Junior forward Andre Hutson currently ranks eighth on MSU s career blocked shots list with 58 rejections. In , Hutson shared the team lead of 22 blocks with Morris Peterson. He is fourth this season with 12 rejections. Blocked Shots No. Years 1. Matt Steigenga Ken Johnson Kevin Willis DuJuan Wiley Quinton Brooks Mike Peplowski Anthony Miller Andre Hutson SA 9. Ron Charles Richard Mudd Moving On Up - Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson are currently ranked among the top-10 scorers in MSU history. Peterson (ninth, 1,547 points) and Cleaves (10th, 1,512 points) will now battle each other as Mike Robinson s 1,717 points at eighth place are out of reach. Looking For Some Filler Material? Old Notes That You ve Seen Before But Are Worth Repeating Bouncing Back - MSU has suffered seven losses this season. After all seven losses, the Spartans have answered defeat with a convincing win. In those six games, Michigan State s average margin of victory is 24 points, with the closest game being a 10- point victory over then No. 2-ranked North Carolina, The last time that MSU lost consecutive games was Dec. 2 and Dec. 5 of 1998 when the Spartans fell to Duke and Connecticut. Free Trips To Europe - After arriving at the Breslin Center at 3 am on Sunday morning after the Arizona game, the Spartans concluded a grueling span of the non-conference season that saw them play nine games in 20 days. Round trip distances to game locations included: 4,000 to Puerto Rico, 1,100 to North Carolina, 350 to Chicago and 3,200 to Arizona (Total travel - 8,650 miles). Travel Woes - On two different occasions this season Michigan State s travel experiences have not gone exactly as planned. After the Jan. 8 game at Iowa, the Spartans sat at the airport and on the plane for one hour waiting for fog to lift. When that never happened, the team spent the night in Cedar Rapids before flying out the next morning. Then on Feb. 19, the Spartans waited at the Madison airport until four in the morning after a deicing truck bumped into the plane, creating a whole series of delays. The team returned to the airport at 10 am only to wait around until 1:30 to depart. The team arrived back in East Lansing at 3:30. Travel problems, however, does not effect the team s play. In both instances, the Spartans won their Tuesday night game after getting back on a Sunday afternoon. Stingy On The Glass - After only outrebounding Arizona by three, Michigan State returned to its dominating ways on the glass against Oakland, posting a rebound advantage. The 12 rebounds by the Golden Grizzlies were the fewest by a Spartan opponent since December 30, 1989, when Michigan State outrebounded Princeton, 27-11, en route to a victory. Beating The Champs - With Muhammad Ali in the audience, Michigan State defeated defending national champion Connecticut, 85-66, on Feb. 5, in the Breslin Center. The win marked Michigan State s first home victory over a ranked non-conference opponent since MSU beat #20 Notre Dame, 85-82, on Jan. 20, MSU also improved to 6-11 against defending national champions, including 4-3 at East Lansing where the Spartans have won four-straight games against NCAA champions. Back Before Color TV - On Jan. 27, Michigan State s defense held Northwestern to seven field goals and 29 total points. To find similar numbers in the record book, it s necessary to go back a half century. The last time MSU held an opponent to only seven field goals was its inaugural year in the Big Ten when Wisconsin won on Feb. 24, The 29 points scored by Northwestern were the fewest ever by a Big Ten opponent. The Spartans last held an opponent under 30 points when they defeated Mississippi State, 74-28, on Dec. 29, The Breslin Advantage: It s Awesome - MSU has won a school-record 28 consecutive games in the Breslin Center. Under Coach Izzo, the Spartans have amassed a home record. Since the facility opened in 1989, MSU has posted a record of (.835) (61-7 vs. non-conference opponents and vs. conference foes). The 28-game streak is the second-longest current streak in Division I. This year, MSU s average margin of victory at home was 25 points.

21 MSU BASKETBALL NOTES * THE NCAA TOURNAMENT - FINAL FOUR, APRIL 1 & 3, 2000 * 21 Tom Izzo Fifth Year Northern Michigan, 77 Tom Izzo is in his fifth season as head coach of the Michigan State basketball program, having established MSU as one of the premier programs in the nation. Entering the Final Four, Izzo owns a career record of , but that only tells part of the special things that are happening under the two-time national coach of the year. This season, Michigan State captured its third-straight regular-season Big Ten Championship, marking the first time in school history and only the eighth time overall that a school has won three-straight regular-season titles. Michigan State also won at least 30 games for the second-straight season, marking just the second Big Ten school to accomplish that feat. The Spartans also repeated as Big Ten Tournament champions. He has also led MSU to the Final Four for the second-consecutive season for the first time in school history. For his efforts, Izzo was named USBWA District V Coach of the Year and NABC District 11 Coach of the Year. The season also brought a personal milestone for Izzo, who recorded his 100th career victory in a Jan. 11, overtime victory over Indiana in the Breslin Center. Under Izzo s guidance, the Spartans have finished off a decade which has seen Michigan State record 114 Big Ten wins, tied for second most in the conference. Over the 1998 and 1999 seasons, MSU posted a 28-4 league record and a winning percentage of 87.5, the highest in back-to-back seasons since the 1975 and 76 Indiana teams (1.000). During the season, Izzo directed the Spartans on a magical run to the program s first appearance in the NCAA Final Four since 1979 and only the third in school history. Along the way, the team left its mark in the school s record books. Under Izzo s guidance, Michigan State posted a record of 33-5, setting a Big Ten Conference and school record for most wins in a season. MSU s 33 wins marked the ninth time that a Spartan team has recorded 20 or more victories and the second time under Izzo. For his efforts, Izzo was named the Basketball Times National Coach of the Year and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 11 Coach of the Year. The road to St. Petersburg, Fla., began with the first and second rounds of the Midwest Region in Milwaukee, Wis. After an easy first-round victory over Mount St. Mary s, MSU defeated Mississippi, 74-66, to advance to the school s second-consecutive Sweet 16. In the Midwest Region semifinal game in St. Louis, Mo., MSU earned a hard fought victory over Oklahoma that set up a meeting with perennial power Kentucky for a trip to the Final Four. After trailing Kentucky at the half, Michigan State would battle back to a victory and a berth in the Final Four. Although Izzo and the Spartans would eventually lose to No. 1-ranked Duke, they had established Michigan State as a basketball powerhouse. Throughout the Big Ten season, Michigan State established itself as the class program of the conference. Izzo directed the school to its second-straight Big Ten title and the eighth in school history. The Spartans followed up a 15-1 Big Ten regular season by capturing their first Big Ten Tournament championship. The 15 league wins tied a school record for most victories in conference play, while the Spartans 93.8 winning percentage established a school record. Izzo s Spartans were equally impressive at the national level. Big things were expected as the Spartans were ranked in the preseason top five by both major polls. By the end of the regular season Michigan State held a No. 2 ranking by both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN. MSU would finish the year ranked third, the highest showing by a Spartan team since the squad earned a No. 1 ranking. Nationally, Michigan State was No. 2 in rebound margin (+9.3) and ninth in scoring defense (59.5). In addition, the Green and White ranked among the nation s best in scoring margin (12th, 12.2) and field goal percentage (21st,.473). Whereas MSU s success in was expected, the Spartans caught the college basketball world by storm in Izzo became the first Michigan State coach to earn Associated Press National Coach of the Year honors while leading MSU to a 22-8 record and a share of the Big Ten title. The Spartans posted a 13-3 mark in conference, earning Izzo Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year honors. IZZO S CAREER RECORD Milestone Victories Big Year Overall Pct. Basketball Times selected Izzo as its Mideast Coach of the Year. In 1998, Izzo made his first appearance in the NCAA Tournament as a head coach. The Spartans entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed in the East Region. In Hartford, Conn., Michigan State recorded victories over Eastern Michigan and No. 8 Princeton, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since In the East Regional semifinal contest, MSU fell to No. 1 and eventual Final Four participant North Carolina. Over the past two seasons, Izzo has compiled an impressive record. A quick look at other stats further demonstrates the Spartans success over the past two years: 28-4 in the Big Ten, 26-3 at the Breslin Center, 17-9 against Top 25 teams, 9-3 in postseason play and 6-2 in the NCAA Tournament Despite the success, Izzo continues to push the Michigan State basketball program to higher levels, while remaining grounded in the fundamentals that have led to the recent success. I still look at our team as the hunter because we haven t accomplished our goals, explained Izzo. We ve been near the top, but we haven t gotten there yet. To reach the top, we ll have to maintain the same principles and foundation that we ve had for the past few seasons. We can t deviate from our thinking and all of a sudden start acting like an offensive team, while forgetting about our defense, rebounding and camaraderie. There are so many areas to developing a good program and we ve only begun. We haven t done anything until it s maintained over a few-year period. In five-to-seven years, we ll be able to look and see what type of program we ve established. In , Izzo guided the Green and White cagers to an overall mark of including a Big Ten ledger of 9-9, good for a sixthplace tie. With one of the youngest starting lineups in the Big Ten, Izzo guided the Spartans to their ninth straight trip to postseason play and second straight NIT appearance, where they advanced to the second round. Included in Izzo s wins were triumphs over NCAA teams Indiana, Wisconsin (twice) and Iowa. During the summer of 1997, Izzo coached the Big Ten All- Star Team in a six-game tour of Europe. During Izzo s first season as head coach in , he directed the Green and White to an overall slate of including a 9-9 effort in the Big Ten. Despite facing the unenviable task of replacing perhaps the country s best backcourt from the season in Shawn Respert and Eric Snow, Izzo recorded wins over top 25 teams on four occasions while leading the program to its eighth straight postseason appearance, a berth in the NIT, where the Spartans advanced to the second round. The rookie mentor saw his team rank No. 26 in the nation in scoring defense (64.2 ppg) and No. 12 in rebound margin (+7.2). Now entering his 17th season as a member of the Michigan State coaching staff, Izzo has been with the Spartan program since taking a part-time assistant coaching position in An assistant coach with the Spartans from , Izzo left MSU in May of 1986 to become the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa. But, on June 10 of the same year, Izzo returned to East Lansing when Spartan assistant Mike Deane left to become head coach at Siena College Since then, he has been the catalyst in the resurgence of the MSU program. Regarded as one of the country s top recruiters, he is known as a tireless worker both on the recruiting trail and in the office. His hard work and loyalty were rewarded in July, 1990, when Jud Heathcote appointed him associate head coach

23 MSU BASKETBALL NOTES * THE NCAA TOURNAMENT - FINAL FOUR, APRIL 1 & 3, 2000 * 23 His dutiful efforts were further recognized when, on March 30, 1993, MSU Athletics Director Merrily Dean Baker recommended both a one-year contract extension for Heathcote through the season and that Izzo be appointed head coach upon Jud s retirement. The MSU Board of Trustees accepted both recommendations on April 9, I had hoped that someday I would get a chance to coach at a place like Michigan State because I ve always loved it here, said Izzo on becoming the 16th head basketball coach in school history. This is the type of town, the type of school that I dreamed of being at. Now, I m going to work as hard as I can to succeed and continue the success that we have had here. Izzo originally came to MSU from Northern Michigan, where he had been an assistant from He was named a part-time assistant at MSU in September, When former assistant Edgar Wilson left in November 1983, Izzo became a full-time assistant. Izzo played guard for NMU s basketball team from , and was voted the team s MVP as a senior. He was also a thirdteam Division II All-America pick that year and established the Wildcat record for most minutes played in a season. Following his graduation from NMU in 1977, Izzo took over as head coach at Ishpeming High School and served in that position for the campaign. A native of Iron Mountain, Mich., Izzo and current San Francisco 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci were Iron Mountain High School teammates in football, basketball, baseball and track. As college roommates at Northern Michigan, Izzo walked on to the basketball team, while Mariucci did the same with football. Both would go on to earn Division II All-America honors. Despite their current busy schedules, they remain the closest of friends. Each year, they co-host a golf tournament in Iron Mountain to raise money for the community. In October, 1990, Izzo was inducted into the Northern Michigan University Hall of Fame and was selected as an inductee into the Upper Peninsula Hall of Fame during the summer of Coach Izzo currently serves on the John R. Wooden Award Board of Governors. He has also served as honorary chairman of the Memory Walk for the past two seasons with proceeds from that event going to combat Alzheimer s Disease.
