THE GAME Pittsburgh travels to Cancun, Mexico, to face Mississippi State in the first game of the Torneo Cancun de Basquetbol. The Panthers battle the Lady Bulldogs at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Kuchil Baxal Arena. Pittsburgh is coming off a setback to No. 23 Penn State on Sunday, while Mississippi State has won three straight games, including a overtime triumph over Montana on Sunday to win its fourth consecutive Mississippi State Classic. ALL-TIME SERIES Thursday s contest marks the second meeting between the two schools. The only other meeting came 24 years ago in Oxford, Miss., at the Mississippi Invitational. 2 panther notes...add one PITTSBURGH HEAD COACH Traci Waites is in her fourth season as head coach at Pittsburgh where she has compiled a overall record. In , Waites orchestrated the biggest one-year turnaround in the program s history as Pittsburgh posted a record, doubling it s win total from the prior season. In addition, Waites earned Big East Co-Coach of the Year honors after leading Pittsburgh to a sixth-place finish in the league, a vast improvement from its 12th-place finish the year before. Moreover, the Panthers were chosen to compete in the Women s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), marking their first postseason berth in six years. Waites joined the Panthers after serving four seasons at the University of Arizona as an assistant coach, including the last two as associate head coach. While there, Waites was instrumental in the Wildcats emergence as a Top 10 program, helping them to three straight 20-win seasons and two NCAA Tournament berths. Prior to Arizona, Waites was the head coach at Santa Monica Community College in Santa Monica, Calif., from after serving the program as an assistant for three years. During her tenure, Waites teams finished second in the Western States Conference and qualified for the state playoffs each year. Waites enjoyed an outstanding collegiate playing career, first at Georgia and then at Long Beach State. She played in the NCAA Tournament each of her four seasons and went to two Final Fours. She holds the distinction of being the only player to appear in the Final Four for two different teams. MISSISSIPPI STATE HEAD COACH Sharon Fanning is in her seventh season as head coach for Mississippi State and owns a mark for the Lady Bulldogs. In 25-plus seasons overall, Fanning holds record. Last season, Fanning led Mississippi State to its fourth consecutive postseason appearance. Prior to taking over the Lady Bulldogs, Fanning was the head coach at Kentucky for eight years and Tennessee-Chattanooga for 11 years. Fanning is a 1975 graduate of UTC and lettered three years in basketball and volleyball for the Lady Mocs while serving as captain for both sports her senior year. Media members and fans of the Pittsburgh women s basketball team can access updated statistics and results on the Panthers web site at: TRAVELING PANTHERS Pittsburgh s trip to Cancun, Mexico marks the second and third straight road games for the Blue and Gold. Pittsburgh is 2-2 away from home this year, including a neutral-site loss to Wisconsin in Arizona. The Panthers defeated Robert Morris on Nov. 27 before traveling to Tucson, Ariz., where they lost to Wisconsin but upset Arizona. Most recently, Pittsburgh fell at No. 23 Penn State, Last year, Pittsburgh was 2-12 away from Fitzgerald Field House. PITTSBURGH VS. THE SEC Pittsburgh holds a 1-11 all-time record against teams in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Panthers are 0-1 versus Mississippi State, 0-1 versus Arkansas, 1-0 against Florida, 0-1 versus Georgia, 0-1 versus Kentucky, 0-1 against Mississippi, 0-2 versus South Carolina, 0-3 against Tennessee and 0-1 versus Vanderbilt. Pittsburgh has never played Alabama, Auburn or Louisiana State. The Panthers only win against an SEC school was during the season. Pittsburgh, who finished that year with a mark, defeated Florida in Fitzgerald Field House, 72-68, on Dec. 20. SCOUTING THE LADY BULLDOGS Mississippi State returns eight letterwinners from last year s squad that advanced to the third round of the Women s National Invitation Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Georgia Tech (77-73) and Illinois (86-77) before falling to James Madison, Leading the squad this season is 6-2 junior LaToya Thomas, who finished last year averaging a team-best 24.3 points per game. Thomas is pouring in 22.4 points per game this season, including 26 points in Mississippi State s last game against Montana. Thomas also grabbed a game-high 22 boards and dished out four assists. Mississippi State leads, 1-0 Injury Report Freshman Jessica Allen suffered a right knee injury and required a lateral meniscus repair. Allen will sit out the entire year and will redshirt. SCRAPING THE GLASS Through nine games this year, Pittsburgh has been able to control the boards in seven of those contests, with the lone exceptions coming against Wisconsin, which had a noticeable size advantage, and Virginia Tech. Pittsburgh grabbed 42 rebounds last Sunday against Penn State, which entered the game outrebounding each of its opponents. In its upset of Arizona, Pittsburgh snagged 42 boards to the Wildcats 36. Against Robert Morris on Nov. 27, the Panthers grabbed a season-high 52 rebounds while holding the Colonials to 26. Four days earlier against American, the Panthers snared 45 rebounds, including 16 offensive, while holding the Eagles to just 32 caroms. In three games, junior Mandy Wittenmyer paced Pittsburgh with double-digits rebounds. In the first two games of the season, Wittenmyer snagged 15 and 13, respectively, while grabbing 10 against American. GIVING UP THE ROCK Led by Laine Selwyn, Pittsburgh has done an excellent job of dishing out the assists this year. The Panthers rank fifth in the conference with 16.4 assists per game, including a season-best 24 versus American. For the year, Selwyn is averaging a team-high 5.9 dishouts, which is second in the Big East and 33rd nationally.

3 panther notes...add two CLOSE CALLS In three of its contests this year, Pittsburgh has been in games decided by five points or less. After dropping its first two games of the season by a total of six points, the Panthers finally came out on top against Arizona. Down nine points with 2:22 remaining, Pittsburgh clawed its way back into the game and eventually escaped with a narrow victory. CONNECTING ON THE LONG BALL During its trip to Tucson, Ariz., for the Arizona Basketball Classic, Pittsburgh used its fair share of 3-pointers. In their upset against Arizona, the Panthers drained a season-best 10 shots from behind the arc (10 of 25) en route to 81 total points. Junior Brooke Stewart led the way with five, while freshman Haley Harguth connected on a career-high four three s. In its setback against then-no. 17 Wisconsin, Pittsburgh drilled five 3-pointers. Stewart and freshman Amy Kunich each knocked down two apiece to lead the way. STUDENT OUTDUELS TEACHER In Pittsburgh s upset over Arizona, head coach Traci Waites showed her former boss/ coach what she learned through the years under her guidance. Waites was a former assistant coach at Arizona under Joan Bonvicini. Waites also played for Bonvicini at Long Beach State for two years. The matchup also featured Panther assistant coaches Bill Broderick and Lisa Scott facing their former mentor. Broderick was an assistant under Bonvincini at Arizona, while Scott played her collegiate ball as a Wildcat. CHARTING THE OPPOSITION Four of Pittsburgh s opponents are currently ranked in either the USA Today/ESPN Coaches or the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Additionally, seven more opponents are receiving votes in the poll. Pittsburgh s contest against Mississippi State marks the fifth game this year against either a ranked team or a team that is receiving votes. Pittsburgh is 1-3 this year against such teams, losing to then-no. 20 Wisconsin, 92-75, Virginia Tech, 83-64, and then-no. 23 Penn State, but defeating Arizona, Last year, the Panthers were 0-6 versus ranked opponents. STEALING THE SHOW Pittsburgh used its quickness last year to make the opposition turn the ball over. Through nine contests this year, Pittsburgh is right back at it as the Panthers have tallied 75 steals (8.3.), including 11 in two of their past five contests. Last year, the Panthers averaged 8.19 steals per game, which ranked eighth in the Big East. Laine Selwyn led the way, ripping away 1.96 per game to place her 10th in the league. UP FOR THE CHALLENGE The Panthers play 13 of its games at Fitzgerald Field House for the third year in a row. Last season, Pittsburgh was 7-6 in the confines of the Field House. The schedule also features nine teams that reached the 20-win plateau in FAMILIAR FACES Pittsburgh returns eight letterwinners from last year s squad, including its top four scorers. Seniors Bettina Love, Jackie Campbell and Jessica Ryndycz, juniors Mandy Wittenmyer, Laine Selwyn, Dallas Williams and Brooke Stewart and sophomore Sheila Stufflet all had major impacts on the campaign. Wittenmyer (12.4 points per game), Selwyn (11.4), Stewart (10.3) and Love (7.2) return to add the offensive punch for the Panthers. Through nine games, Selwyn is dishing out 5.9 assists while recording 2.8 steals per game, which ranks second and fifth in the conference, respectively, and has registered new careerhighs in both. In Pittsburgh s victory over American, Selwyn tallied a career-high seven steals and added five assists while draining 13 points. Her previous career-high for takeaways was six against Maryland-Eastern Shore last season. Selwyn dished out a career-best 10 assists against Arizona last Sunday and added 21 points along the way. For the season, Selwyn is also averaging a team-best 13.6 points and is pulling down 4.7 boards. DRAINING THE 3 UP NEXT: Pittsburgh continues its trip in Cancun, Mexico as it plays North Carolina State on Saturday at 3 p.m. Mississippi State also plays NC State in the tourney, but the game is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday. Laine Selwyn has proven to be one of Pittsburgh s most-accurate 3-point shooters. In her two-plus seasons as a Panther, the sharpshooting left-hander has connected on 32 percent of her shots behind the arc (60 of 187). Selwyn currently ranks eighth on Pittsburgh s career 3-point field goal percentage list. Inserted into the starting point guard role as a sophomore, Selwyn started all but two games last year and finished the campaign with a career-high 125 assists, which ranked sixth in the conference (4.63 assists/game) and was the 10th-best in Pittsburgh history. Named to the alltournament team, Stewart averaged 19.5 points per game, including a season-high 23 in Pittsburgh s upset over Arizona on Sunday. She connected on 15 of 29 field goals, including 7 of 15 from 3-point land, and drained both of her foul shots. She also added six boards and four steals in the two games. DIALING LONG DISTANCE Brooke Stewart had an excellent year shooting from behind the 3-point arc last season. Stewart finished fourth in the Big East in 3- point field goals (2.15 per game) and sixth in 3-point field goal percentage (.287). 5 panther notes...add four Junior Mandy Wittenmyer has continued to establish herself as one of Pittsburgh s and the Big East s top young stars in her first two seasons. Currently, Wittenmyer is 11th on Pittsburgh s career rebounders list with 519, and she is first in the conference in rebounding, averaging 9.2 per game. She finished last season second in the conference in rebounding behind Big East Rookie of the Year Rebekkah Brunson of Georgetown. In each of her first two years, Wittenmyer has paced the Panthers in both scoring and rebounding. Last year, she averaged career bests with 12.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, topping her Big East All-Rookie team numbers of 12.1 points and 7.8 boards per game as a freshman. MANDY S MACHINE Mandy Wittenmyer has solidified her name in Pittsburgh s all-time career field goal percentage list. She has connected on 48.8 (296 of 606) percent of her shots, good enough for fifth place. A native of nearby Monroeville, Pa., Kunich tallied 13 assists in just her third collegiate game, which marks the fourth-best (tied) output in school history for one game and the most since Jo Jo Guzman dished out 13 against Coppin State on Dec. 29, Her 13 assists is the best mark in the conference and the fourth best in the NCAA this year. For the year, Kunich has 28 assists (3.1 avg.), which is second only to Laine Selwyn. DAZZLING DALLAS Junior Dallas Williams, who started just four games last season, was inserted into the starting lineup against William & Mary and produced for the Panthers in a major way. Williams connected on an astounding 7-of-8 shots from the field and 7-of-9 free throws for a career-high 21 points. SHEILA STRUTS HER STUFF This past summer, sophomore Sheila Stufflet was chosen to represent Pittsburgh on the 2001 Big East Women s Basketball All-Star team that toured Germany. Stufflet averaged 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds for the team that went a perfect 6-0. BRODERICK PROMOTED Head Coach Traci Waites promoted former assistant coach Bill Broderick to associate head coach this past summer. Broderick is entering his fourth year as a member of the Panther staff. He worked with Waites at Arizona for three seasons and accompanied her to Pittsburgh prior to the year. A 1993 graduate of Frostburg State, Broderick was an assistant coach at both his alma mater and at Potomac State College before joining Waites in Arizona. Perry, who most recently was a member of the University at Buffalo women's basketball staff, brings extensive coaching experience to the Panther squad and will focus primarily on recruiting. Prior to working with the Bulls for the past three years, Perry spent two seasons ( ) as the head coach and senior women's adminstrator at West Virginia State College. Perry also served as an assistant coach at Ohio University for four years ( ) and at Southern University & A&M College for three seasons ( ). Perry earned her bachelor's degree in industrial technology from South Carolina State. Scott, a former student-athlete under Waites at the University of Arizona, begins her first campaign as an assistant basketball coach and will focus on tutoring the Panther guards. A four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats, Scott earned honorable mention All-Pac 10 and finished her career tied for first on Arizona's alltime list for games played (112). Scott additionally finished as the Arizona and Pac-10 career leader in 3-pointers made (285). Scott made four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and one appearance in the Sweet 16 as a member of the Wildcat basketball squad. She graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in communications. Additionally, Waites appointed Ron Wuotila director of operations. Wuotila comes to Pittsburgh with an extensive basketball background, following the completion of his master's degree in physical education/athletic administration from Idaho State University in He came to the Panthers after a nine-month stint as director of men's basketball operations at Robert Morris College where he coordinated the Tip-Off Social, with guest speaker Digger Phelps, and was involved in scheduling and public relations duties. Wuotila has an impressive head coaching resume that includes being named the Canadian College Athletic Association Men's Basketball Coach of the Year in while at Mount Royal College (Canada). Williams tallied 21 points while shooting 7-for-8 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Pittsburgh opened up advantage in the first half with just 5:53 remaining. However, the Tribe climbed back with a 12-5 run to end the half and knot the score at Both teams shot 45 percent from the field in the first half and the Panthers held a narrow advantage on the board. However, Bison guard Desire Almind drilled a jumper with 1:14 left in the game, giving Bucknell what would eventually be the final score. Junior Mandy Wittenmyer tallied a season-best 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and pulled down nine boards in the loss. Junior Laine Selwyn added 12 points for Pittsburgh with a game-high seven assists. The Panthers held a three-point advantage (29-26) with 4:37 left in the first half, powered by 10 points from Wittenmyer. After falling behind by as many as seven points (11-4) early on, the Panthers grabbed their first lead of the contest, 23-22, with just over a minute remaining in the first half. The Dukes quickly responded with four unanswered points to take a halftime advantage. In the second half, Pittsburgh's Haley Harguth connected on a deep 3-pointer to give the Blue and Gold its largest lead, 49-46, at the 6:50 mark.
