2 panther notes...add one PITTSBURGH HEAD COACH Traci Waites is in her fourth season as head coach at Pittsburgh where she has compiled a overall record. In , Waites orchestrated the biggest one-year turnaround in the program s history as Pittsburgh posted a record, doubling it s win total from the prior season. In addition, Waites earned Big East Co-Coach of the Year honors after leading Pittsburgh to a sixth-place finish in the league, a vast improvement from its 12th-place finish the year before. Moreover, the Panthers were chosen to compete in the Women s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), marking their first postseason berth in six years. Waites joined the Panthers after serving four seasons at the University of Arizona as an assistant coach, including the last two as associate head coach. While there, Waites was instrumental in the Wildcats emergence as a Top 10 program, helping them to three straight 20-win seasons and two NCAA Tournament berths. Prior to Arizona, Waites was the head coach at Santa Monica Community College in Santa Monica, Calif., from after serving the program as an assistant for three years. During her tenure, Waites teams finished second in the Western States Conference and qualified for the state playoffs each year. Waites enjoyed an outstanding collegiate playing career, first at Georgia and then at Long Beach State. She played in the NCAA Tournament each of her four seasons and went to two Final Fours. She holds the distinction of being the only player to appear in the Final Four for two different teams. PROVIDENCE HEAD COACH Jim Jabir is in his sixth year as head coach for Providence and owns a record for the Friars. Overall in 16 season, Jabir holds a mark as a head coach. In 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach, eight of his teams have posted winning records. Last season, Jabir and the Friars posted an overall record and a 4-12 mark in the BIG EAST. The team won it s first BIG EAST Tournement game while under Jabir s direction, against Seton Hall in the first round of Tournament action, The Friars were defeated by Rutgers in the next round of play, Jabir is a 1984 graduate of Nazareth. Media members and fans of the Pittsburgh women s basketball team can access updated statistics and results on the Panthers web site at: TRAVELING PANTHERS Pittsburgh is 4-9 away from home this year, including a 1-2 neutral-site record. Last year, the Panthers were 2-12 away from Fitzgerald Field House. The last time Pittsburgh won in Providence was in the season as it posted a victory. The Panthers have dropped four straight at Alumni Hall. SCOUTING THE FRIARS Providence returned 10 letterwinners from last year s squad that finished 11th in the Big East. Leading the squad this season is 6-5 senior Dani Trippany, who is pouring in a team-best 10.7 points per game. In the Friars victory on Saturday, Trippany tallied 13 points and pulled down seven boards. THE WALKING WOUNDED This season, the Panthers are plagued with a number of injuries. Entering the Providence game, Pittsburgh has one of its post players and one of its guards both out for the season. Junior forward Mandy Wittenmyer, who has had a season rife with injuries, went down in the Georgetown game (Jan. 5) with an ankle sprain and is out for the season. Freshman guard Jessica Allen suffered a right knee injury and required a lateral meniscus repair. Allen will sit out the entire year and will redshirt. DRAINING THE TREY Since head coach Traci Waites arrived on campus four years ago, the Panthers have been known for their deep threat from behind the 3-point arc. In her 109 games as head coach for Pittsburgh, the Panthers have tallied at least one 3-pointer in 106 of those contests. Pittsburgh now has a string of 62 consecutive games in which it has drilled at least one 3-pointer, including every game this season and during the campaign.
