Mids Open Dual-Meet Season in Sunny California... The Navy wrestling team kicks off its dual-meet season with three matches against three different California squads. On Friday night, Navy will open against Cal State-Fullerton at Temecula Valley H.S., in Temecula, Calif. It will be the second straight season the Mids have opened with the Titans. Action gets underway at 7:00 pm PST, or 10:00 pm EDT. On Saturday, Navy will conclude its action with a pair of duals against Cal State- Bakersfield and UC-Davis, in Bakersfield, Calif. The Mids will battle Cal State-Bakersfield at 1:00 pm PST (4:00 pm EDT) and will wrap up the weekend against UC-Davis, following the Bakersfield dual. Last year, Navy won all three of its duals on its California trip, defeating Cal State- Fullerton, 23-12, 13th-ranked Cal Poly, 26-16, and 21st-ranked Cal State-Bakersfield, Tanner Garrett and John Cox went 3-0 during the duals to lead the Mids to victory. Cal State-Fullerton lost all three of its NCAA Tournament qualifiers to graduation, and will feature a balanced mix of young and old in its line-up this weekend. The Titans, which finished tied for 52nd in the NCAA Championship, could start as many as five freshmen and sophomores in the first seven weight classes. The final five line-up spots will likely be occupied by seniors, and just three of the returnees (Paul Tice, 141; Risto Marttinen, 165; and Jesse Taylor, 184) wrestled against Navy last year. None of the three won a match against Navy. Cal-State Bakersfield returns one NCAA qualifier off last year s team that finished 22nd at the NCAA Championship. Anthony Baza returns at 149 pounds and is ranked 12th in the country at the same weight. Bakersfield lost two All-Americans (Efren Ceballos, 125; and Matt Sanchez, 133) due to graduation. Another wrestler to keep an eye on for the Roadrunners is 174-pounder Christian Arellano, who is ranked 14th in the nation s top 20. UC-Davis returns one NCAA qualifier, with 11th-ranked Derek Moore (qualified at 133 pounds; wrestling at 141 this year) being the leader. It is not known what weight Moore is wrestling at this year. UC-Davis lost two NCAA qualifiers to graduation, Ron Silva at 174, and Branden Bear at 184. Navy leads the all-time series with Cal State-Fullerton, 1-0 (2004 was the lone meeting), is tied with Cal State-Bakersfield, 1-1, and leads the series with UC-Davis, 2-1. With this year s contest, the Mids will have wrestled UC-Davis in four of the last five years. Inside... Two-deep Lineup 2 Navy in the Rankings 3 Tourney Placewinners Ind. Andrew Adams (197) WRESTLING NOTES - C Anchoring the Mids... Senior heavyweight Tanner Garrett enters his senior year appearing to be Navy s best chance to earn All-America recognition. The Tulsa, Okla., native is ranked anywhere from seventh to ninth in the four major polls after leading Navy with a 35-5 record in Already this year, Garrett owns a 5-0 record after claiming the Eastern Michigan Open last weekend. Garrett excels in the regular-season, where he has won 44 of his last 45 matches against collegiate competition. His lone loss since Jan. 3, 2004, came against Edinboro s Joe Hennis, 3-2, at the Southern Scuffle. Garrett, however, would avenge that loss later in the same tournament with a 5-2 triumph. He hasn t allowed an opponent to score more than five points in his last 42 matches, dating back to Nov. 13, 2004, when Cal State-Bakersfield s Eric Parker scored seven points. Garrett won that match, Garrett has also won 21 straight dual matches, including a 14-0 mark last year. His last loss in a dual match came to Purdue s Israel Blevins on Jan. 3, 2004, in the Lone Star Duals, Lastly, he is poised for a run to become the sixth wrestler in school history to reach 100 career wins. Garrett owns a record, needing just 24 wins to reach the century club. If he reaches triple digits, Garrett would be just the second wrestler since 1999 to record 100 career wins (Mark Conley, ; 126 wins). With his five wins, he moved into a tie for 22nd place on the school s all-time victory list. With three wins this weekend, he can move into a share of 19th place. Jarred Rises to the Occasion... Navy had several strong performances at the Eastern Michigan Open, and none was more impressive than John Jarred s title at 157 pounds. Jarred entered the tournament with a 10-9 career mark and didn t place in the top two at the Navy wrestle-offs the week before. None of that mattered, as the junior from Kansas City, Mo., stormed through the field to claim the title. He won his opening match by a major decision, his next two matches by fall, pulled out a one-point victory in the quarterfinals, advanced to the finals via an injury default and defeated the NAIA s top-ranked 157-pounder, Mike Rio of No. 1-ranked Lindenwood, in the finals, The individual title was the first of his career. Youngsters Step Up as Well... Navy s underclassmen also had a great deal of success at last week s Eastern Michigan Open. Freshman Ricky Tippett advanced to the finals at 141 pounds, where he lost the first match of his career to fifth-ranked Andy Simmons of Michigan State. On his way, he picked up a fall over Purdue s Jason Cook in the semifinals. Another freshman, Tyler Moyer, finished fifth, falling to a pair of Big 10 wrestlers. He avenged a loss in the Blue-Gold Challenge match to Navy s Andrew Adams, by defeating the senior, 3-1. Lastly, a pair of sophomores, Matt Stolpinski and Justin Jacobs also had outstanding tournaments. Stolpinski posted a 6-1 record with the lone loss coming to sixth-ranked Imad Kharbush of Stanford, 6-4. Jacobs advanced to the semifinals, but was forced to withdraw due to an injury and finished sixth. The two classes combined for a record during last Saturday s action. Career Firsts / Bests... Several Navy wrestlers enjoyed their career-first victory last weekend. Jason Coyne (157) won his first career match in the first round, defeating Michigan State s Nick Shafer, 8-5. Caleb Levee (125) won his first career match in the first round, defeating Shane Tisdale by fall in 3:38. Tyler Moyer (197) won his first career match in the first round, defeating Findley s Joshua Fox, 7-3. He also claimed his first career medal, earning a fifthplace finish. Robert Johnston (165) won his first career match in the first round, defeating SUNY-Brockport s Omi Ortiz, 5-2. Ricky Tippett (141) won his first career match in the first round, defeating Olivet s Rob Yahrmarkt in the first round, 3-2. He also claimed his first career medal, earning a second-place finish. You Can Find Me in the Club... Prior to the start of the season, only 24 wrestlers in school history have reached the 75-career win plateau, before Tanner Garrett joined the club on Nov. 5, As the season moves on, as many as six more Mids could reach the exclusive club. A number of Mids could also reach the 10-member 120-career match and the 16-member 20-pin club. - CALIFORNIA TRIP 3 Lucky Number 21 Tanner Garrett has won 21 straight dual meets Jake Hager (Oklahoma) W, Jared Jorgensen (Neb.-K.) The Navy schedule has some familiar faces on it and once again, will be another challenging slate for Burnett. Navy will face at least three teams ranked in the nation s top 25 in dual-meet action and will see several more in tournaments down the road. The highlight of the home season will be a dual meet against No. 12-ranked Penn State on Dec. 9. The Nittany Lions have won 17 of the last 19 meetings with Navy, including the last four meetings dating back to Navy will host Army this year in a match televised by College Sports Television on February 18. Navy has owned the Black Knights recently, winning five in a row in the series and owning a record in the last 43 matches. The Mids will also wrestle at No. 8 Lehigh on Jan. 14, with hopes of pulling the upset. The Mids were just one win away from shocking the Mountain Hawks last year before falling, 20-16, in Annapolis. Navy will also face No. 22-ranked Tennessee-Chattanooga in the Lone Star Duals on Jan. 7 In tournament action, Navy will compete in the highly-competitive 33-team Southern Scuffle that will feature such national powers as Minnesota, Missouri and Cornell as well as in the Tournament, All-Academy Championships and the Penn State Open. Gold Rallies For Victory in Blue-Gold Challenge Matches... The Gold won the last four matches to rally for a victory over the Blue in the Blie-Gold Challenge Matches on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Blue team jumped out to a 15-6 lead after six matches, but the Gold claimed the last four matches to overtake the Blue squad and come away with a decision. The elimination matches, which ran all week in the Navy wrestling room, determined the line-ups for this weekend s Eastern Michigan Open. Alex Usztics opened the match for the Blue team with a 9-2 decision over freshman Caleb Levee. Usztics scored a fivepoint takedown and near-fall at the end of the match to claim the victory. At 133, junior Brad Canterbury pinned sophomore Branden Beasley in 2:37 to give the Gold a short-lived 6-3 advantage. Blue, however, won the next four matches to take a 15-6 cushion after 165 pounds. At 141, sophomore Spencer Manley defeated freshman Ricky Tippett, 3-1, thanks to a second-period takedown. At 149 pounds, junior John Cox defeated senior Matt Gulosh, 7-1. At 157 pounds, senior Adam Brochetti knocked off sophomore Justin Jacobs, 9-3. Craig Dziewiatkowski ended the Blue run with an 8-1 decision over Robert Johnston at 165 pounds. Gold started its rally at 174 pounds, when Matt Stolpinski looked very strong in a 12-0 major decision over freshman Jesse Feinsod. At 184 pounds, Jonny Kane scored a five-point takedown and near-fall late in the match to claim a 9-4 victory over Chris Pogue. Senior Andrew Adams and freshman Tyler Moyer competed in perhaps the best match of the day, as the Gold's Adams knocked off Moyer, 7-4, in the second tiebreaker. Adams secured the victory with a takedown in the second tiebreaker, after Moyer nearly won the match late in the third period. Lastly, at heavyweight, Tanner Garrett started his senior season off with a bang, defeating sophomore Ed Prendergast, 5-2, thanks to a third-period takedown. Cox, Stolpinski Claim Victories at Sunkist Kids International Open... Three members of the Navy wrestling program all claimed victories at the 21st annual Sunkist Kids International Open held over the weekend on the campus of Arizona State University. Junior John Cox, sophomore Matt Stolpinski and assistant coach Scott Owen all had success at the prestigious event. Cox, a 149-pounder, posted a 3-2 record in the 66-kilogram competition, coming one match short of a top-eight finish. In the first round, Cox defeated Patrick Sharp of the Highlands Wrestling Club, 8-5, 4-0. His hopes for a title were cut short in the round of 16, as eventual semifinalist JaMarr Billman of the New York Athletic Club held off a Cox rally for a 4-1, 3-7, 2-0 triumph. However, Cox rebounded in the consolation bracket, defeating Will Rowe, 6-5, 0-6, 5-3, and Drayton Woods, 6-0, 7-0. Jason Johnstone ended Cox's tournament with a 7-2, 7-0 decision in the consolation quarterfinals. Cox, who enters the season as the top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, reached last year's NCAA Tournament and is ranked No. 13 in the national preseason poll. Stolpinski competed in the 84-kilogram competition, posting a 1-2 record. Stolpinski won his first match of the tournament, a 2-0, 2-3, 2-0, victory over Jake Cranford of the Sunkist Kids. Stolpinski was then defeated by Gregory Parker of the New York Athletic Club by fall in 1:05. In the consolation bracket, C.B. Dollaway of the Sunkist Kids pinned Stolpinski in 49 seconds. Stolpinski enters the season with Navy after an outstanding freshman campaign that saw him record a mark and a sixth-place finish. He is ranked No. 30 in the WrestlingReport.com national preseason rankings. Lastly, newly-hired assistant coach Scott Owen had the most success of the trio that made the trip. Owen recorded a 5-1 mark, garnering a third-place finish in the 74-kilogram weight class. Owen won his first three matches by a combined score of 25-4, before falling to the eventual champion, Tyrone Lewis, in the semifinals, 2-0, 0-1, 1-0. Owen rebounded in the consolation bracket to knock off Jim Mederios, 3-0, 7-0, and Jared Frayer, 3-0, 2-0, to earn the third-place showing. The event is seen as one of the top preseason competitions for NCAA wrestlers and one of the first competitions to kick off the international wrestling season.
