The Navy wrestling season will get underway on Saturday with a trip to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Open. It will mark the second straight season that Navy will open its season in the tournament, and the Mids are looking for the same kind of results as last year. The Mids will join such powerhouses as Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Central Michigan in the field. Last year s field consisted of five eventual All-Americans. Navy will bring wrestlers to the tournament in hopes of garnering individual tournament titles. Navy returns six wrestlers that placed in the top six of the tournament, including 149- pounder John Cox, who finished second. Cox lost to Michigan s Eric Tannenbaum in the finals, Tannenbaum would finish fourth at the NCAA Championships in March. Brad Canterbury also had an outstanding tournament, winning six straight matches in the consolation round to forge a third-place finish at 125 pounds. Other high finishers for Navy included Matt Stolpinski (4th, 174) and Jonny Kane (4th, 184). Graduated senior Thayer Paxton won the tournament at 197 pounds. Navy returns six starters and 17 letterwinners from last year s squad that placed third at the Tournament and sent six wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament. The third-place finish was the highest for the Mids since the 1995 season and the six NCAA Qualifiers were the most since Navy finished in a tie for 33rd at the NCAA meet, but failed to have an All-American for the third consecutive year. Despite losing three NCAA qualifiers to graduation, Navy returns a very strong nucleus. The six returning starters posted a combined record and five individual tournament titles. Five of the six recorded 25 or more wins last year. Senior heavyweight Tanner Garrett will lead the Navy charge after a stellar junior season. Garrett finished with a 35-5 overall record and needs just 29 wins this season to become the seventh Navy wrestler in school history with 100 wins. Garrett has been to two NCAA Tournaments already and owns a career record. Senior 165-pounder Craig Dziewiatkowski came out of nowhere to post s record and finish with a third-place showing at the Tournament and advance to his first NCAA Tournament. Dziewiatkowski is all-time. Lastly, 149-pounder John Cox recorded a mark and reached his first NCAA Tournament in 2005, where he went 1-2. Cox s 49 wins are the fourth most in school history by a wrestler in his first two years. Cox is after two seasons in Annapolis. Inside... Midshipmen Wrestling History... Navy has been one of the most successful teams in NCAA history, needing just three dual-meet wins to become the fourth team to win 800 matches. Navy enters with a 96-year record of and only four schools have wrestled more matches. The Mids boast 54 All-Americans and 83 Champions. Navy has posted at least a.500 record in 91 of 96 seasons, including 27 in a row. To top it off, Navy owns an impressive mark all-time against Army, including a remarkable record in the last 43 matches. The Mids have won five in a row against the Black Knights, including last year s victory at West Point in front of a regional television audience. Last year s 12-3 record was the best since 1993 (19-3-1) and its third-place showing at the Tournament was its highest since 1995 (3rd). Lastly, Navy sent six wrestlers to the NCAA Championship for the first time since Mids on the Preseason Charts... Several Mids find themselves on either national or regional preseason rankings lists. Navy Faces Another Challenging Schedule... The Navy schedule has some familiar faces on it and once again, will be another challenging slate for Burnett. Navy will face at least three teams ranked in the nation s top 25 in dual-meet action and will see several more in tournaments down the road. The highlight of the home season will be a dual meet against No. 12-ranked Penn State on Dec. 9. The Nittany Lions have won 17 of the last 19 meetings with Navy, including the last four meetings dating back to Navy will host Army this year in a match televised by College Sports Television on February 18. Navy has owned the Black Knights recently, winning five in a row in the series and owning a record in the last 43 matches. The Mids will also wrestle at No. 8 Lehigh on Jan. 14, with hopes of pulling the upset. The Mids were just one win away from shocking the Mountain Hawks last year before falling, 20-16, in Annapolis. Navy will also face No. 22-ranked Tennessee-Chattanooga in the Lone Star Duals on Jan. 7 In tournament action, Navy will compete in the highly-competitive 33-team Southern Scuffle that will feature such national powers as Minnesota, Missouri and Cornell as well as in the Tournament, All-Academy Championships and the Penn State Open.

Andrew Adams (197) WRESTLING NOTES - E Anchoring the Mids... Senior heavyweight Tanner Garrett enters his senior year appearing to be Navy s best chance to earn All-America recognition. The Tulsa, Okla., native is ranked anywhere from seventh to ninth in the four major polls after leading Navy with a 35-5 record in Garrett excels in the regular-season, where he has won 39 of his last 40 matches against collegiate competition. His lone loss since Jan. 3, 2004, came against Edinboro s Joe Hennis, 3-2, at the Southern Scuffle. Garrett, however, would avenge that loss later in the same tournament with a 5-2 triumph. He hasn t allowed an opponent to score more than five points in his last 37 matches, dating back to Nov. 13, 2004, when Cal State-Bakersfield s Eric Parker scored seven points. Garrett won that match, Garrett has also won 21 straight dual matches, including a 14-0 mark last year. His last loss in a dual match came to Purdue s Israel Blevins on Jan. 3, 2004, in the Lone Star Duals, Lastly, he is poised for a run to become the sixth wrestler in school history to reach 100 career wins. Garrett owns a record, needing just 29 wins to reach the century club. If he reaches triple digits, Garrett would be just the second wrestler since 1999 to record 100 career wins (Mark Conley, ; 126 wins). Gold Rallies For Victory in Blue-Gold Challenge Matches... The Gold won the last four matches to rally for a victory over the Blue in the Blie-Gold Challenge Matches on Saturday, Oct. 29. The elimination matches, which ran all week in the Navy wrestling room, determined the line-ups for this weekend s Eastern Michigan Open. Alex Usztics opened the match for the Blue team with a 9-2 decision over freshman Caleb Levee. Usztics scored a fivepoint takedown and near-fall at the end of the match to claim the victory. At 133, junior Brad Canterbury pinned sophomore Branden Beasley in 2:37 to give the Gold a short-lived 6-3 advantage. Blue, however, won the next four matches to take a 15-6 cushion after 165 pounds. At 141, sophomore Spencer Manley defeated freshman Ricky Tippett, 3-1, thanks to a second-period takedown. At 149 pounds, junior John Cox defeated senior Matt Gulosh, 7-1. At 157 pounds, senior Adam Brochetti knocked off sophomore Justin Jacobs, 9-3. Craig Dziewiatkowski ended the Blue run with an 8-1 decision over Robert Johnston at 165 pounds. Gold started its rally at 174 pounds, when Matt Stolpinski looked very strong in a 12-0 major decision over freshman Jesse Feinsod. At 184 pounds, Jonny Kane scored a five-point takedown and near-fall late in the match to claim a 9-4 victory over Chris Pogue. Senior Andrew Adams and freshman Tyler Moyer competed in perhaps the best match of the day, as the Gold's Adams knocked off Moyer, 7-4, in the second tiebreaker. Adams secured the victory with a takedown in the second tiebreaker, after Moyer nearly won the match late in the third period. Lastly, at heavyweight, Tanner Garrett started his senior season off with a bang, defeating sophomore Ed Prendergast, 5-2, thanks to a third-period takedown. Cox, Stolpinski Claim Victories at Sunkist Kids International Open... Three members of the Navy wrestling program all claimed victories at the 21st annual Sunkist Kids International Open held over the weekend on the campus of Arizona State University. Junior John Cox, sophomore Matt Stolpinski and assistant coach Scott Owen all had success at the prestigious event. Cox, a 149-pounder, posted a 3-2 record in the 66-kilogram competition, coming one match short of a top-eight finish. In the first round, Cox defeated Patrick Sharp of the Highlands Wrestling Club, 8-5, 4-0. His hopes for a title were cut short in the round of 16, as eventual semifinalist JaMarr Billman of the New York Athletic Club held off a Cox rally for a 4-1, 3-7, 2-0 triumph. However, Cox rebounded in the consolation bracket, defeating Will Rowe, 6-5, 0-6, 5-3, and Drayton Woods, 6-0, 7-0. Jason Johnstone ended Cox's tournament with a 7-2, 7-0 decision in the consolation quarterfinals. Cox, who enters the season as the top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, reached last year's NCAA Tournament and is ranked No. 13 in the national preseason poll. Stolpinski competed in the 84-kilogram competition, posting a 1-2 record. Stolpinski won his first match of the tournament, a 2-0, 2-3, 2-0, victory over Jake Cranford of the Sunkist Kids. Stolpinski was then defeated by Gregory Parker of the New York Athletic Club by fall in 1:05. In the consolation bracket, C.B. Dollaway of the Sunkist Kids pinned Stolpinski in 49 seconds. Stolpinski enters the season with Navy after an outstanding freshman campaign that saw him record a mark and a sixth-place finish. He is ranked No. 30 in the WrestlingReport.com national preseason rankings. Lastly, newly-hired assistant coach Scott Owen had the most success of the trio that made the trip. Owen recorded a 5-1 mark, garnering a third-place finish in the 74-kilogram weight class. Owen won his first three matches by a combined score of 25-4, before falling to the eventual champion, Tyrone Lewis, in the semifinals, 2-0, 0-1, 1-0. Owen rebounded in the consolation bracket to knock off Jim Mederios, 3-0, 7-0, and Jared Frayer, 3-0, 2-0, to earn the third-place showing. The event is seen as one of the top preseason competitions for NCAA wrestlers and one of the first competitions to kick off the international wrestling season.

4 Navy s Tourney Placewinners East. Michigan Open (NTS) MICHIGAN OPEN 4 Scott Owen Named Assistant Wrestling Coach... Navy head wrestling coach Bruce Burnett has announced the hiring of Scott Owen as an assistant coach to replace Todd Beckerman, who left for a similar position at the University of Maryland. Owen began his duties on Monday, Oct. 17, and brings a wealth of experience to the Navy wrestling program. Owen comes to Navy from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., where he helped the Huskies to national recognition on the mats. He served as as a volunteer and assistant coach at the MAC school since 2003, where he helped coach four wrestlers to last year's NCAA Championships. As a collegiate wrestler at Northern Illinois, Owen was a four-time NCAA Qualifier and two-time All-American, placing fifth at 157 pounds in 2002 and He was the nation's top-ranked wrestler during the season and was a three-time Mid-American Conference champion. He ended his career as the all-time wins leader in Northern Illinois history and is just one of three Northern Illinois wrestlers to finish his career as a two-time All-American. Following the completion of his collegiate career, Owen has remained active on the mat and has claimed several top honors as a freestyle wrestler. He finished in the top 12 at the 2005 United States Nationals and was ranked as high as seventh in the country at 66 kilograms. Owen is a 2008 Olympic Freestyle Wrestling hopeful, and he continues his training to become a member of the USA Olympic Team in Beijing, China. Owen is currently a member of the New York Athletic Club at 66 kilograms and competed at the prestigious U.S. Open in Las Vegas, Nev., where he lost to eventual Olympic Silver Medalist Jamil Kelly in overtime, 3-1. Based upon his outstanding performance, it's anticipated that Owen will be ranked among the United States' top 10 in his weight class. Owens came to Northern Illinois as a three-time New Mexico state champion and was a two-time member of the Asics All-American Team in 1996 and He also excelled in the classroom, where he graduated for NIU with a 3.63 GPA in biological sciences with an emphasis in pre-med and a minor in chemistry. He was a two-time member of the NWCA First-team Academic All-America team and was named to the Verizon / CoSIDA Academic All-American second team in He was a four-time Dean's List honoree and a five-time Northern Illinois Victory Scholar, which is given to athletes with a 3.5 GPA or higher. He is currently seeking a master's degree in sport management. from Northern Illinois. Burnett Leads Team US Wrestling at World University Games... Navy head wrestling coach Bruce Burnett led team US to its best finish ever at the World University Games, which wrapped up last week in Izmir, Turkey. Burnett coached the team to three gold-medal finishes with only six athletes competing. The trio of golds were the first titles at the World University Games since Bruce Baumgartner claimed gold in the 1981 tournament. Coming into the tournament, team US had claimed only two gold medals in the games since Former great Jesse Jantzen (Harvard), Nate Gallick (Iowa State) and Tommy Rowlands (Ohio State) all claimed golds in front of hostile crowds. Gallick and Rowlands both defeated hometown Turkish wrestlers in the finals, setting off a round of hostility among the fans.

8 Head Coach Bruce Burnett Navy wrestling coach Bruce Burnett enters his sixth season at the helm of the Navy wrestling program. Burnett came to Annapolis fresh off a coaching stint in Sydney, Australia, where he served as the United States Olympic Freestyle Coach at the 2000 Olympic Games. His athletes captured one gold, two silver and two bronze medals. The edition of the Navy wrestling team was among the best in school history, posting a 12-3 overall record, losing to top tenranked foes Oklahoma, Nebraska and Lehigh. Navy finished third at the Championships, its highest finish since the 1995 tournament and sent six wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament, the most since Navy also claimed the top spot in the Navy Classic (first time since 1997) and placed third at the extremely-competitive Southern Scuffle. In , Burnett led the Mids to a 12-4 overall mark, their third straight season with at least 10 dual wins. The Mids finished sixth in the Tournament, its third top-six finish in four years under Burnett. It was a sign of things to come in Three years ago, Burnett coached Frank Edwards to a seventh-place finish and All- America honors at the NCAA Championship.
