2016 Semi-state Penn steps up for ticket to state By Al Lesar South Bend Tribune FORT WAYNE Stars grab the attention. Role players win titles. Penn was thankful for both Saturday night. As usual, Camryn Buhr was the star with 19 points. However, it was one crucial basket from Kamra Solomon, and three 3- pointers from Claire Carlton that sent the Kingsmen (27-2) to next Saturday s Class 4- A girls basketball state championship game with a win over Homestead (26-3) in the Northern Semistate at Carroll High School. Penn will play top-ranked and defending state champ Columbus North (27-1) at 8:15 p.m. next Saturday in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. In a game like this, you need your peripheral players to come through for you, said Homestead coach Rod Parker. That s what made the difference tonight. Really, there were all sorts of difference makers. Penn s defense was somewhere between effective and brilliant. The Spartans came in averaging 71.4 points, while making pointers a game. Penn limited Homestead to just 10 3-point attempts, two were made. (Homestead s) bread and butter is the 3s, said Penn coach Kristi Kaniewski Ulrich. Our goal was to chase them off the 3-point line and make them shoot in unfamiliar places. The biggest shot of the game happened in the midst of a Penn drought. The Kingsmen led by eight after three quarters. The fourth quarter started with the Spartans going on a 10-2 binge to tie the score with 2:55 to play. After a timeout, Penn seemed to be stumbling for an opening when the ball found its way into Solomon s hands. She had previously only tried one shot in the game, but missed it. Without hesitation, Solomon faked a move to the basket, pulled up for a 10-footer from the left side, and found nothing but net for a lead. Kamra is such a competitor, said Kaniewski Ulrich. She s got ice water in her veins. She never hesitated to step up. No matter what your role is on this team, you ve gotta be ready, Solomon said. I jabbed, like I was ready to drive, then figured out I better do something else. Something else was just what the Kingsmen needed. Homestead came back and tied the game once again, but that s when Buhr went to work. She scored four of Penn s final five points to put the victory on ice and touch off the celebration. This team isn t about just one person, said Buhr, who had 15 of her 19 points in the second half after first-half foul trouble. We just focused on keeping our cool. Buhr s first-half foul problems could have spelled an early demise for the Kingsmen. However, Penn s ability to have different players step up at different times carried the Kingsmen. Buhr went to the bench with her second foul with 1:57 to play in the first quarter and Penn trailing, 8-7. That just opened the door for senior sharpshooter Claire Carlton. She took a more active role in looking for her shot and hit three consecutive 3-pointers that were instrumental in the Kingsmen leading at the break. If Claire s open, we want her to shoot, said Kaniewski Ulrich. That s her job. With Camryn out, we re losing a big scorer, said Carlton, who scored 11 points. Roles change a little bit. This is a deep team. Everyone gets their shots. Even though Karissa McLaughlin led Homestead with 21 points and Jazmyne Geist added 12, Kaniewski Ulrich knew
before the game it would be defense that would decide the outcome. Check on our (locker room) board, I wrote, First one to 50 wins, said Kaniewski Ulrich. I just had a feeling. Bull Dogs control boards, win despite guard s injury By Ted Schultz - The Columbus Republic RICHMOND In the week leading up to their semistate battle with Roncalli, the Columbus North girls basketball players heard people tell them they couldn t win without injured point guard Ashlyn Huffman. Saturday afternoon, the Bull Dogs proved those doubters wrong. The top-ranked and defending Class 4A state champions are headed back to Bankers Life Fieldhouse after a victory against the fifth-ranked Rebels. North will face Penn for the Class 4A state title at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday. The Bull Dogs (27-1) did it thanks largely to a dominating performance on the boards. They outrebounded Roncalli That was a huge point of emphasis for us, North coach Pat McKee said. We talked all week about, Limit them to one shot. If we do that, we can win the game. That was probably the single most thing we talked about. Imani Guy led the Bull Dogs with 14 rebounds, only four fewer than the total for the entire Roncalli team. During every practice, (McKee) kept saying to us, If we limit them to one shot, and we rebound after every possession, this is a game we re going to win, Guy said. I think we did a good job of doing that. North led the entire game, except for two 39-second stretches in the first quarter and a 32-second stretch of the second period. It was 39 seconds into the game when Paige Littrell broke a scoreless tie with a 3-pointer. Forty seconds later, Maliah Howard- Bass hit another 3 to give the Bull Dogs a 6-0 lead. We know if we get that lead from the beginning, we re going to play strong, Littrell said. Our best game is always when we play as hard as we can right from the start. The Rebels (24-5) took a 9-8 lead on a 3-pointer by Lindsey Corsaro with 2:04 left in the first quarter. North then scored the next six points and never trailed again. Roncalli tied the game at 21 on another Corsaro 3 with 4:44 left in the first
half. But then the McDonald s All-American and Kentucky recruit picked up her third foul on a charging call and went to the bench for the final 4:23 the half. But North also was experiencing foul trouble, with starters Elle Williams and Emily Kim on the bench with two apiece, and held the ball for most of the final four minutes of the half. The Bull Dogs went to halftime with a lead. North used an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter to extend its lead to The Rebels got back to within four three times, the last at with 5:26 left in the game, before the Bull Dogs began pulling away. Layups by Kim and Littrell pushed the lead back to 46-38, and after a Corsaro basket, Howard-Bass hit a basket and a 3- pointer to make it with 3:22 remaining. The Rebels weren t done, however. A three-point play by Corsaro and a 3- pointer by Paige Saylor cut the lead to with 1:22 left. But a one-and-one by Howard-Bass with 38 seconds remaining made it a three-possession game. Following two Corsaro free throws with 23 seconds left, North s Kenzie Patberg made a pair with 13 seconds remaining to ice it. I wasn t really surprised because my dad (assistant coach Ron Patberg) told me, Make sure you re prepared, and don t be nervous, and when I went in, I was like Okay, you have to keep calm, Patberg said. I just kept my cool and didn t let it get to me. Patberg played extended minutes in both halves because of the injury to Huffman and Kim s foul trouble. She also made a big basket early in the fourth quarter and finished with four points. Corsaro finished with 29 of Roncalli s 48 points. She went 9 of 22 from the field. We knew she was going to get points, but our goal was to try and limit those, Howard-Bass said. With that cushion we had, whenever she did get her points, that was kind of an okay thing. Meanwhile, Guy was instrumental in holding Daesjah Ely to five points. Ely had led the Rebels with 19 when the Bull Dogs beat Roncalli on Jan. 28. Her having 19 made me want to play better defense because last time, I really didn t know about her, Guy said. This time, I wanted to shut her down. Howard-Bass led North with 18 points, while Littrell added 14 points and seven rebounds. Kim dished out seven assists. The Bull Dogs also got a big game off the bench from freshman Nadia Lomax, who went 3 for 3 from the field for six points. Nadia really doesn t surprise me because we ve seen flashes of it here and there, and she gave us another flash of brilliance here today, McKee said. Kenzie, no, I don t think anybody would have expected that she s playing big minutes in a semistate game. But we needed her, and the two free throws she hit at the end couldn t speak any more of her stepping up to answer the moment.
EXPERIENCE HELPS Northside Gym (Elkhart Truth) SECTIONAL MOVE FOR PENN Penn's boys and girls basketball teams are switching sectionals this year. They have previously been in sectional 3, but now will be in sectional 4. Sectional 4 consists of Elkhart Central, Elkhart Memorial, Concord, Warsaw, Goshen, Northridge, and Penn. For the boys, Sectional 4 is played every year at Northside Gym in Elkhart. Northside Gym is among the top 10 largest gyms in the state. The gym also has a ton of history in the gym, which creates a rustic old school Indiana basketball feeling. The girls play at Goshen. Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi, an American University commit, said, "I'm very excited about the opportunity to play new teams in a sectional environment." She also adds that she will miss playing the other sectionals opponents, yet is very optimistic about the new sectional. Senior Camryn Buhr, a Lehigh commit, is a little sad about the switch. She said, "I loved playing in sectional 3 because a lot of the sectional was our conference. I will miss the rivalry between Mishawaka and Penn. It made it very competitive because we would play them at least twice in the same season." However she also says that she is very excited about the switch. Senior point guard of the boys basketball team Tyler Seger eagerly said, "The historic Northside Gym will hopefully entice more fans to come. I always love playing in Northside Gym, the atmosphere is always electric." By Matt Trewhella The Penn Lady Kingsmen Basketball team will be traveling to Indianapolis this Saturday to compete for the Class 4-A State title. It will be an experience that many of the girls have had before. Claire Carlton, Camryn Buhr, Lindsay Chrise, Lindsy Kline, Kamra Solomon, and Kaitlyn Marenyi, participated in the state championship game two years ago. In 2014, the Lady Kingsmen lost to Bedford North Lawrence, The girls will look to draw from their experience from two years ago to help them change the outcome. Penn's Kaitlyn Marenyi, who played a big role in the success of the team two years ago, talked about the team s return to the title game this year. "We have played on the big stage before, so we know what to expect. The loss two years ago has motivated us to make it back and finish the job this year. " The Lady Kingsmen (27-2) will take on the Bulldogs of Columbus North (27-1) on Saturday, Feb, 27, at 8:15 p.m. NORTH GUARD INJURED Columbus North could be without one of its best players for the Class 4-A girls basketball state championship game against Penn. According to The Columbus Republic, Columbus North point guard Ashlyn Huffman will miss the game with a torn meniscus in her right knee. She suffered the injury in the regional game against Evansville Central. Huffman averages 9.3 points, and 4.6 assists a game. She scored seven points in North s victory against Penn in December. She has gotten hot of late scoring in double figures in six of the last seven games. She has also contributed 30 assists in the last five games. Even with Huffman out, North rolled to a win vs. Roncalli in the Semistate. The Penn girls basketball media notes were organized by Kaitlyn Marenyi and Janessa Chesnic of the Penn High School Sports Journalism class.
KINGSMEN COLLEGE COMMITMENTS CAMRYN BUHR Lehigh Cam is one of the top seniors in the entire state, Penn girls basketball coach Kristi Kaniewski Ulrich said. She was an Indiana Junior All-Star and recognized as one of the Supreme 15 Underclassmen in the State as a Junior. Cam has the unique ability to be able to play and guard any position on the floor. Lehigh University is getting the whole package with Camryn. CLAIRE CARLTON University of Indianapolis Claire is an extremely versatile player who is always steady on the court, Kaniewski Ulrich said. Claire's work ethic and leadership will allow her to make an immediate impact at the University of Indianapolis. LINDSAY CHRISE University of Tennessee-Martin Lindsay will have the opportunity to be a dominating force on the inside this year with her length and athleticism, Kaniewski Ulrich said. The University of Tennessee-Martin is looking forward to watching Lindsay have a stellar senior year and blossoming into an impact player. DELANEY JARRETT Saint Mary s of the Woods Delaney is an outspoken teammate who is always echoing the coach, Kaniewski Ulrich said. Delaney's growth over the past 3 years has earned her the opportunity to play basketball at the next level. KAITLYN MARENYI American University Katie is veteran point guard with a ton of experience under her belt, Kaniewski Ulrich said. She is quick, savvy and can score from anywhere on the floor. American University will be receiving a tremendous young lady come next fall. KAMRA SOLOMON Furman University (women s soccer) Kamra will leave quite a legacy in the Penn Girls Soccer program, Penn girls soccer coach Jeff Hart said. She s been a 4-year starter, a 3-time all-nic, all-district and all-state player, including 1st-team all-state as a junior. More importantly, as a 3-year captain (the only one in Penn Girls Soccer history), she has been the unquestioned leader of the program for the last few years. She was recently named the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award Winner for 2015 girls soccer. We will greatly miss her talent and leadership.
