(16-7) or Brownsburg (19-5) 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 The New Palestine Dragons are back in the regional, clinching the fifth sectional title in school history and the program s first since 2004 last weekend. The Dragons advanced to the regional with three emphatic defensive performances, holding Connersville, Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon all below 40 points to earn the right to climb the sectional ladder. This will also be the Dragons first regional trip as a 4A school after moving up from Class 3A in NP advanced through a mixture of outstanding defense and strong shooting. In each game, a big thirdquarter run pushed the Dragons to a double-digit lead. Against Connersville, runs of 13 and 15 points put the game away. Haley Harrison tied her career high with 18 points and Leah Seib added 13. In Friday s victory over Greenfield-Central, NP trailed at halftime but scored the second half s first 15 points to take an 11-point lead. Harrison s 3-pointer capped the run led by Katie Herron and Seib. Herron finished with nine points and 11 boards, while Seib had 13 points. In Saturday s title-clinching victory over Mt. Vernon, the Dragons finished the first half on a 10-1 run, then pushed the lead to in the third quarter before holding on. Megan Jolly hit nine second-half free throws to seal it. Harrison scored 12 points and Seib 11 as the Dragons claimed their first sectional title in a generation. The field The Dragons face No. 1 Pike in the semifinals. Last year s state runner-up, the Red Devils are led by senior Angel Baker (21.7 ppg), one of three players who averages in double figures. Pike is 24-1, having avenged its lone regular season loss to Lawrence North. Pike beat Roncalli 44-26, Perry Meridian and Ben Davis to win the Perry Meridian sectional. The second semifinal features Brownsburg and Warren Central. WC posted wins over Heritage Christian and North Central to win its sectional. Junior Shaila Beeler leads a balanced Warrior attack at 11.6 ppg. Brownsburg beat Avon and Plainfield to win the sectional. Freshman Ally Becki leads the Bulldogs with an 11.5 ppg average. The NP 500 Last week s sectional title game was also the 500 th win in NPHS girls basketball history. The program began in one year before the IHSAA sanctioned its first tourney. NP is all-time in those 44 seasons, playing under 14 coaches. Winning mark The 18 wins are tied for secondmost in school history with the team, which went 18-2 under the tutelage of current AD Allen Cooper. Dragon head coach Sarah Gizzi was a senior player on that team. The school record is 19 wins, set in with a 19-3 sectional championship team. HHC leaders Leah Seib finished the regular season atop the HHC in rebounding (6.8) and FT percentage (86.4). She was also fourth in scoring (14.3) and fifth in FG percentage (50.7). Megan Jolly was 10 th in scoring (10.0), third in assists (3.1) and fifth in steals (2.4). Haley Harrison was fourth in 3-point shooting (32.7).

She equaled the point total with another 20- point performance two nights later against Ritter, hitting 7-of-9. Taking the Coliseum The Dragons posted their first victory over a ranked team this season Jan. 13 when they beat then-2a No. 5 Triton Central at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Tatum Biddle had a huge day with 12 rebounds and seven assists, while Leah Seib scored 16 points. Cleaning the glass Junior forward Katie Herron has been a rebounding machine for the Dragons this season. She had 11 rebounds against Greenfield-Central in the sectional semifinal, tying her season high. She also had 11 boards in the victory over New Castle. The top rebounding games this season belong to Leah Seib, who had 13 boards against Yorktown on Dec. 16, and Tatum Biddle, who had 12 rebounds from the guard position Jan. 13 against Triton Central. Biddle also had 11 boards against Yorktown. Dragons in college Three New Palestine alumnae are currently playing college basketball all from the Class of Natalie Kehrt is playing for NCAA Div. III power DePauw, Carly Hackler is a starter at Anderson and Haley Stratman is at Taylor. Dragon double-doubles Leah Seib had the Dragons only double-double of the regular season Dec. 16 at Yorktown. She tallied 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Dragons victory. Megan Jolly had the second, with 12 points and 10 steals Jan. 2 against Herron. It was the first game for four players in double figures since Nov. 23, 2013, when Carly Hackler (17), Natalie Kehrt (12), Gia Nitschke (10) and Haley Stratman (10) scored in double figures in a win over Scecina. The Dragons duplicated the feat the next week, when Emily Newcomb (14), Emma Grable (13), Harrison (11) and Tatum Biddle (10) hit double figures in a Dec. 29 loss to Noblesville. Streaking The Dragons nine-game win streak was the longest in school history to start a season. It tied one from last year, when NP won nine straight from Nov. 19-Dec. 27, 2016, which was the team s longest streak since , when the Dragons won nine straight to close out the regular season. The longest winning streak in school history is 11 games, set both in and Zero it out The Dragons posted a shutout quarter in the Dec. 2 victory over Delta. NP held the Eagles scoreless for the second quarter. It was part of a 27-point run in a victory.
4 Meet the coaches Coach Sarah Gizzi is in her first year as the Dragons varsity coach, but she is a familiar face at NPHS. As Sarah Haynes, she was a standout player from , where she became the school s career scoring leader with 1,172 points and was named an Indiana All-Star in She led the Dragons to two sectional titles and three conference titles during her four-year tenure as player for coach Allen Cooper, who is now the Dragons athletic director. She played collegiately at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, graduating in After returning to New Palestine, she has coached with the Dragon program as a varsity assistant and as a middle school coach. She lives in New Palestine with her husband Mike and their three children. Assistant coach Bruce Haynes was the Dragons varsity boys basketball coach from after stints at North White and Pioneer. Haynes, the father of head coach Sarah Gizzi, is a former social studies teacher at NPHS and also served as a coach with the track and field program. He also helps coach Doe Creek Middle School and youth basketball teams with his son, Noah Haynes, and son-in-law Mike Gizzi. Assistant coach Nancy Workman played collegiately at DePauw University for coach Kris Huffman. She is a social studies teacher at NPHS. Prior to coming to New Palestine, she taught and coached swimming at New Castle High School. JV coach Chris Story is a 2007 New Palestine graduate, where he played baseball for current AD Al Cooper. He graduated from Franklin College and is a social studies teacher at NPHS. Prior to coming to New Palestine, he was the head baseball coach at Cardinal Ritter. Story also coaches middle school golf. Community of champions New Palestine has developed an elite athletic program for a mid-sized school, with six team and eight individual IHSAA championships. In , New Palestine won three state titles the softball team won its fourth title. Senior wrestler Alec White won the 126 pound title senior Sam Voelz won the 800 meter run at the IHSAA Track and Field State Finals.
