Vernon (11-8/4-1) Saturday at Whiteland (12-6) The New Palestine Dragons hit the stretch drove of the season as they host Mt. Vernon and travel to Whiteland this week. The Dragons are looking to win their first game on the floor since Jan. 27, when they posted an emphatic 37-point victory over Yorktown. Last week yielded three games, including their season-high in points in a loss to Shelbyville. It was followed up with a solid effort in a loss at Connersville. While they dropped all three games on the floor last week, the Dragons were awarded a win by forfeit over Franklin Central, as the Flashes discovered after the game they had used an ineligible player. Against Shelbyville, the Dragons shot 46 percent from the floor and had four double-figure scorers Jalen Qualkinbush (17), Maximus Gizzi and Gavin Hausz (13 each) as well as Dylan Romine (10). Matthew True had nine. NP shot 20-of-23 from the line in that contest and bolted out to a lead before a big Shelbyville run allowed the Bears to seize the lead at halftime. Against Connersville, the Dragons climed out of an early 12-point deficit to cut the 20 th -ranked Spartans lead to four on a couple of occasions, but Connersville pulled away to the win. Qualkinbush tallied his fifth straight double-figure game with 14. Hausz had 13 and Gizzi 12. Freshman Dawson Eastes had eight rebounds. At 11.8 ppg, Gizzi is 10 th in the HHC in scoring, with Qualkinbush 13 th at 11.2 ppg. Qualkinbush also ranks eighth with 4.6 rebounds per game. Gizzi is second with 3.6 assists per contest, and seventh with 1.7 steals per game. Weekend foes Mt. Vernon enters the weekend with an 11-8 mark and a 4-1 HHC record. MV has won two straight, including a victory over Mississinewa on Tuesday. Coach Travis Daugherty s team is led by HHC scoring leader Michael Ertel (20.8 ppg) and forward Erick Shepherd (13.8 ppg). NP and MV are meeting for the 72 nd time since Whiteland is 12-6 for coach Matt Wadsworth. The Warriors face conference foe Martinsville on Friday prior to playing NPHS. Whiteland enters the weekend having dropped two straight, including a game to Shelbyville on Saturday. Michael Valle (18.9 ppg, 6.5 rpg), Brennan Neal (11.8 ppg) and Aaron Gross (11.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg) lead the way for the Johnson County champions. Sectional draw The IHSAA will draw the sectional pairings at 5 p.m. Sunday on Fox Sports Indiana and WFNI The Dragons will play in the Class 3A Brebeuf sectional. Looking ahead The Dragons will conclude the regular season next Friday when they host Greenwood. NP will honor seniors Graham Biggs, Jalen Qualkinbush and Samuel Voelz prior to the game. Elsewhere at NPHS Senior Alec White is competing in the IHSAA State Finals in wrestling for the fourth consecutive year. White is 35-1 and was a semistate runner-up last week. The first round is Friday, the final three rounds Saturday. The gymnastics team is 10-2 headed into its final meet Tuesday at Shelbyville. They finished fourth in last week s Bloomington North Invitational. The boys swim team hosts the sectional finals at 1 p.m. Saturday.

3 Back in 3A New Palestine returned to Class 3A in after spending four seasons in Class 4A. NP won two of its last three sectionals in Class 3A in 2011 and New Palestine will play its sectional at Brebeuf this season, joining Attucks, Chatard, Herron, Manual and Marshall. Multi-sport success New Palestine has a handful of players who have had success in multiple sports. Sophomore center Austin Keele is a two-year starter on the Dragons football offensive line, and has started in a state title game. He was an All-State offensive lineman this season. Sophomore guard Matthew True led the Dragons to a tennis sectional title at No. 1 singles. He had a 19-4 record this season. Senior center Samuel Voelz led the Dragons to sectional and regional titles in cross country this fall and competed in the track and field State Finals in the 4x800 relay this past spring. Bring down the Hausz Junior guard Gavin Hausz had a big shooting game against Marshall, where he hit 5-of-7 from 3-point range and scored 25 points, one shy of his career high. He also had eight rebounds. The Dragons hit 10-of-20 from beyond the arc in that contest. Voelz cleaning the glass Senior forward Samuel Voelz provides size inside for the Dragons at 6-foot-5, and has become a key defender and rebounder. Voelz had back-to-back games with nine boards on Jan. 6-7 at Delta and against Marshall, helping the Dragons post two of their best defensive games of the year. Big 3 rd quarter in Mooresville The Dragons seized control of their Jan. 14 win at Mooresville with a 22-point third quarter, turning a three-point halftime deficit into a lead in a victory. Matthew True, Maximus Gizzi, Dylan Romine and Gavin Hausz all hit 3-pointers in that quarter. Hausz had 16 points and Gizzi 15 to lead the Dragons. True hit two 3-pointers and scored eight. Strong start Senior forward Jalen Qualkinbush had as strong start to the year, hitting 8-of-15 shots and tallying 20 points in the loss to Eastern Hancock on Nov. 26. It marked his career high. His previous high was 19 points in a OT loss to Delta on Jan. 8, It was the seventh double-figure scoring game of Qualkinbush s career. Qualkinbush has followed with a series of double-figure games, notching his first career double-double Dec. 16 with 11 points and 10 rebounds against New Castle. He hit a key 3-pointer that gave the Dragons a late lead in regulation It s True Sophomore guard Matthew True had a solid allaround performance in the Dec. 3 win against Rushville. He hit three 3-pointers to help the Dragons build a lead, including a key one in the fourth to help stave off a Rushville run. He also hit two late free throws for a career-high 11 points. He had his strongest career outing Dec. 16 against New Castle, hitting five 3-pointers en route to a 26-point night. A new generation The Dragons have seen several young players step into key roles in recent years. Freshman Maximus Gizzi had a strong debut, with 15 points and nine rebounds in the opening contest against Eastern Hancock. He is the team s second-leading scorer and rebounder and leads the team in assists. Gizzi s family has been a part of New Palestine basketball. His mother, Sarah (Haynes) Gizzi, was an Indiana All-Star in 1994 and is one of two players in NPHS boys and girls basketball history to be so honored. His grandfather, Bruce Haynes, was the Dragons head boys coach from Superb effort The Dragons set a number of season-bests in their double-ot loss to New Castle on Dec. 16.
