Vernon at Yorktown* Delta at Muncie Burris Saturday s games New Castle at Muncie Central New Palestine Boys Basketball New Palestine Dragons (12-9) at Greenwood Woodmen (14-7) 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 Greenwood High School The New Palestine Dragons conclude the regular season with one last tune-up for the state tournament against the Greenwood Woodmen. This game concludes a stretch of strong opponents for the Dragons, as Greenwood is 14-6 and in the midst of its best season in more than a decade. The Dragons will open sectional play Tuesday at Richmond against Pendleton Heights. Greenwood is a familiar foe the two teams have played annually since The Woodmen are the fifth Mid-State Conference team on the Dragons schedule. NP is 2-2 against the Mid-State, with wins over Mooresville and Whiteland and losses to Franklin and Decatur Central. The Dragons clinched second place in the Hoosier Heritage Conference last week, the team s highest placement since winning the league title in NP opened the week with a loss to Connersville in which Gavin Hausz scored a season-high 22 points for the Dragons. NP fell to Mt. Vernon Friday, despite 17 points from Hausz, 16 from Maximus Gizzi and 14 from Matthew True. Gizzi was playing his first game after an eight-game absence due to injury. Dylan Romine had nine boards. Four Dragons Hausz (21), Gizzi (12), Romine (11) and Dawson Eastes (10) scored in double figures in Saturday s win over Whiteland. Kyle King added 10 rebounds, while Gizzi had eight boards and four assists. Hausz is totaling 15.3 ppg in True is tallying 15.1 ppg in his last seven. Romine is tallying 10.4 ppg. Gizzi leads NP with 16.2 points, 4.3 boards and 4.5 assists per game. Final tune-up Tonight s foe Greenwood is enjoying its best season since going 17-5 in The Woodmen enter the weekend having won five of their last six, including a Saturday win over Mt. Vernon. The Woodmen fell to Indian Creek Tuesday. The veteran Woodmen are led by seniors Eric Moenkhaus (15.4 ppg) and Brayden Kincaid (12.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg). Greenwood is coached by former Yorktown mentor Joe Bradburn. Looking ahead The Dragons open sectional play Tuesday at Richmond against Pendleton Heights. The winner moves on to face host Richmond in Friday s semifinal. A very fine Hausz Senior Gavin Hausz has had a fantastic The lone senior on the Dragons roster began the year with back-to-back 18-point games against Delta and Hauser, going a combined 8-for-15 from beyind the 3- point arc. He s finished the season strong, scoring 22 points against Connersville, 17 against Mt. Vernon and 21 against Whiteland in the season s penultimate week. In 2018, he is averaging 15.3 ppg, hitting 36 percent from 3-point range and 71 percent from the line. His career high is 26, set in , and he has two 25-point games in his career. He also scored 25 against Marshall in January One shy of the 3-point record Junior guard Matthew True narrowly missed the school record for 3-pointers, as he hit seven triples in the win over Perry Meridian. True hit 3-pointers on the Dragons first three possessions and tied his career high with 28 points in that game. He was 7-of-8 from deep and 8-of-11 from the floor. 3 Back in 4A After two seasons in Class 3A, the Dragons are back in Class 4A due to rising enrollment. NP was also in 4A from The Dragons have competed in 3A from and NP won a 4A sectional in 2012 and 3A sectional titles in 2009 and Meet Coach Whitaker Coach Trent Whitaker is in his third year as the Dragons head coach. He had been a varsity assistant to previous head coaches Adam Barton and Brian Kehrt, the two winningest coaches in NPHS history, for 11 seasons. He has been a part of three sectional championship teams (2009, 2011, 2012) and the 2013 HHC title. Coach Whitaker is a counselor at NPHS. He is a graduate of Eastern Hancock High School and Ball State University. King of the glass Sophomore Kyle King had the Dragons first doubledigit rebound game of the season when he had 10 boards in the victory over Whiteland Feb. 17. King had five offensive and five defensive boards in that game. It was the first double-digit rebound game since Jalen Qualkinbush had 10 on Dec. 16, 2016 aginst New Castle. 3-point barrage The Dragons had a strong game from behind the 3- point line Jan. 5 against Delta. NP hit 12-of-24 from beyond the arc, scoring 36 of the game s 63 points from 3-point range. Gavin Hausz was 4-for-8. The next night, the Dragons were 11-of-22 from deep against Hauser. Hausz was 4-for-7 and True 4-for-8. NP followed with another night of 11 3-pointers Jan. 19 in the win over Roncalli. NP was 11-of-24. In the following weekend, the Dragons were 10-of-21 against Yorktown and 11-of-21 against Perry Meridian. True hit 5-of-9 against Yorktown and a torrid 7-of-8 against Perry. Speeding to 80 The Dragons scored 81 points Jan. 6 in their victory over Hauser. It was NP s first time breaking 80 since a victory over Shelbyville on Feb. 6, NP hit a season-high 30 field goals, shooting 30-of-62. The Dragons were 11-of-23 from 3-point range. They were led by Maximus Gizzi s 21 points, nine assists and six boards. Gavin Hausz scored 18 and Matthew True 13. Dropping dimes Sophomore Maximus Gizzi has had a strong sophomore season, but especially the first weekend of In two games against Delta and Hauser, Gizzi had a career-high nine assists and one turnover in each game. He also had six rebounds in each contest and totaled 37 points in the two games. Those were his fianal games until Feb. 16, due to injury. When he returned, he had 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in his first two games. Four in doubles Against Franklin Jan. 20, the Dragons had four players in double figures.
