2016 Girls Classic Game Notes The 2016 field School Record IBCA ICGSA Sagarin Greenfield-Central 8-7 RV 4A #17 #38 (4A #31) Plainfield 12-3 #16 4A #14 #18 (4A #14) North Harrison 13-0 #9 3A #1 #10 (3A #2) Tippecanoe Valley 10-2 RV 3A #6 #19 (3A #5) Greenfield-Central, Plainfield, North Harrison and Tippecanoe Valley enter the tournament with a combined record of (.717). The all-time best combined record was in 2012 when the girls teams (Hamilton Southeastern, Columbus North, Evansville Mater Dei and Logansport) entered the event History The 2016 edition is the 33 rd Girls City Securities Hall of Fame Classic and 27 th played in New Castle. The girls tournament has included 18 teams that went on to win a state championship that season (including 2013 champion Bedford North Lawrence and 2014 champion Heritage Christian), including 11 state champions and five state runner-up teams in the past 14 years alone. 23 young women who went on to win Indiana s Miss Basketball title have participated in the girls Classic, including each of the last eight Miss Basketball winners (Skylar Diggins, Courtney Moses, Bria Goss, Jessica Rupright, Stephanie Mavunga, Whitney Jennings, Ali Patberg and Jackie Young). 10 women to have played in the Classic were named McDonald s All-Americans and 8 girls Classic alums have played in the WNBA. Girls legends who have played in the Classic include Stephanie White, Katie Gearlds, Jackie Young, Shanna Zolman, Lisa Shepherd, Abby Conklin, April McDivitt, Kelly Faris, Jennifer Jacoby, Jodie Whitaker, Shrya Ely and Tiffany Gooden, among others. 21 HOF inductees have led teams as head coach of girls Classic participants, among 82 all-time head coaches in the event history. 90 different IHSAA member schools have competed in the girls Classic, including this year s first-timers, North Harrison and Tippecanoe Valley.

About the teams Greenfield-Central Team Plainfield 8-7 Record 12-3 Receiving votes IBCA #16 4A #17 ICGSA 4A #14 #38 (4A #31) Sagarin #18 (4A #14) 18 Strength of Schedule (Sagarin) Offensive avg Defensive avg Avg. margin 9.0 Greenfield-Central (8-7, ICGSA 4A #17) has weathered key injuries early this season with hopes that a mid-season turnaround has begun. The Cougars began the season without senior point guard Katie Helgason due to a torn ACL suffered in August. The 2016 Junior All-Star returned to action on December 13 against Shelbyville, less than four months removed from surgery, and has played five games heading into the Classic. Another team leader, junior Jessica Farrell, also suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Cougars 2nd game of the season. The Cougars star has remained Madison Wise (Iowa State), an Indiana Miss Basketball candidate averaging 24.3 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 blocks per game. Head coach Doug Laker is in nine seasons leading the program. Greenfield-Central will make their 3rd appearance in the girls Classic. The Cougars were runners-up in the 1986 event that they hosted and were consolation game winners in the 2007 event in New Castle. Plainfield (12-3, IBCA #16, ICGSA 4A #14) has been led so far this season by a duo of Division I recruits, but will likely have to adjust following a key injury last week. 6 1 senior forward Riley Blackwell (Northern Illinois) averaged 15.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game before suffering a knee injury on December 22 that has her status in doubt for the Classic. 5 8 senior Kayla Casteel (University of Evansville) scores 14.9 points with 4.4 rebounds per game and 5 8 junior point guard Samantha Olinger averages 9.0 points and 4.2 assists. Head coach Curt Benge is in 22 seasons leading the program. He is the 13th winningest active coach in Indiana high school girls basketball. Plainfield will make their 3rd appearance in the girls Classic. The Quakers were consolation winners in the 1996 event and appeared in the 2009 event.

North Harrison Team Tippecanoe Valley 13-0 Record 10-2 #9 IBCA Receiving votes 3A #1 ICGSA 3A #6 #10 (3A #2) Sagarin #19 (3A #5) 85 Strength of Schedule (Sagarin) Offensive avg Defensive avg Avg. margin 31.3 North Harrison (13-0, IBCA #9, ICGSA 3A #1) has completed their pre-classic schedule unblemished. 6 1 sophomore center Lilly Hatton leads the way with averages of 21.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.9 blocks, while 5 8 junior guard Cali Nolot averages 12.8 points, 3.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 steals. The Lady Cats have won 41 of their last 44 games, including a post-season run that took them to a 3A runner-up finish in the IHSAA girls basketball tournament last season. Their 41-3 record (.932) in that span is unsurpassed in the state and their three losses have come by a combined 10 points. Head coach Missy Voyles is in 14 seasons leading the program. She served as an assistant coach for the Indiana All-Stars in North Harrison will make their first appearance in either the girls or boys Classic. Tippecanoe Valley (10-2, ICGSA 3A #6) is in the midst of a fantastic three-year run, led by a Division I recruit. 6 0 senior center Anne Secrist (Youngstown State) averages 15.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.0 steals per game, 5 7 junior guard Addy Miller scores 10.6 points per game and 5 8 senior guard Meredith Brouyette averages 10.3 points for the Lady Vikings A state runners-up in , the Lady Vikings were 25-2 last season. Including a 10-2 start this season, their 60-7 record (.896) in the past two-and-a-half seasons is the 5 th best winning percentage in the state in that span and they enter the Classic 55-5 in their last 60 regular season games. Head coach Chris Kindig is in seven seasons leading the program. Tippecanoe Valley will make their first appearance in either the girls or boys Classic.

Of Note Plainfield coach Curt Benge becomes just the fourth coach to lead three teams to the girls Classic. Rushville s Cinda Brown was the first to do so with her 3 rd Classic in 1993, Terre Haute South s Alan Maroska did so in 2007 and Mooresville s Mark Hurt accomplished the feat in With Doug Laker, Missy Voyles and Chris Kindig making their Classic coaching debut, 82 coaches all-time have now led teams into the girls Classic. North Harrison enters the Classic winners of 18 consecutive regular season games and 41 of their last 44 overall games since the start of last season. Their three losses in that span came by a combined 10 points. Plainfield s Curt Benge is half of the only pair of siblings to each work as head coach in the Classic. His brother Stan, a HOF inductee, coached Ben Davis to girls Classic championships in 1998 and Thus, a Plainfield championship would further cement the Benge name in Classic annals for their success. Making their first appearance in the girls Classic, North Harrison and Tippecanoe Valley bring the total to 90 IHSAA programs to play in the event s 33-year history. Greenfield-Central and Plainfield each make their 3 rd Classic appearance, making nine programs to have played in the girls event three or more times. Bedford North Lawrence, Center Grove, Huntington North, Mooresville, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) and Terre Haute South have appeared three time and Rushville has the record with five girls Classic appearances. North Harrison enters the Classic as one of seven remaining undefeated IHSAA girls basketball teams this season. Scenarios With no previous girls Classic winners in this year s field, this year s winner will become the 30 th different school to win the girls Classic. Only Ben Davis, Warsaw and Bedford North Lawrence have been repeat winners in the 32-year history of the event. It s good to be undefeated. If North Harrison wins today s event, it would be the sixth year in a row that an undefeated team has won the girls Classic. Penn left New Castle with the championship trophy and a 13-0 record five seasons ago, Columbus North was 14-0 after winning two games in the Classic in 2012, Bedford North Lawrence took the trophy in 2013 with an 11-0 mark, Heritage Christian left the 2014 tournament with a 13-0 record and last year Princeton took the title of Classic champions with a record of 17-0.

Boys Game Notes The 2016 field School Record IBCA AP Sagarin Logansport 7-0 #9 4A #3 #46 (4A #37) Lawrence North 6-1 #6 4A #8 #10 (4A #10) New Albany 5-2 #4 4A #4 #5 (4A #5) Warsaw 6-2 #16 NR #27 (4A #26) Logansport, Lawrence North, New Albany and Warsaw enter the tournament with a combined record of 24-5 (.828). The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association all-classes poll ranks each team in the state s top 16. New Albany ranks 4 th, Lawrence North 6 th, Logansport 9 th and Warsaw 16 th. The Associated Press ranks Logansport, New Albany and Lawrence North among the top eight teams in the state in 4A. Logansport is #3, New Albany #4 and Lawrence North #8 in the large school class. History The 2016 Boys City Securities Hall of Fame Classic is the 40 th edition of the boys tournament and 28 th played in New Castle. 13 participating teams have gone on to win their state championship, with four more finishing as state runner-up that season. 26 men who have played in the Boys Classic have been named Indiana Mr. Basketball (including 12 of the last 16 Mr. Basketball award winners). All-time, 12 Indiana Mr. Basketball winners have been named HOF Classic MVP (Steve Alford, Delray Brooks, Woody Austin, Damon Bailey, Kojak Fuller, Kevin Ault, Tom Coverdale, Chris Thomas, Greg Oden, Zak Irvin, Trey Lyles and Kyle Guy). 24 men who have played in the Boys Classic have been named McDonald s All-Americans. 16 men who have played in the Boys Classic have been NBA draft picks (two #1 overall picks Glenn Robinson and Greg Oden). 36 HOF inductees have led teams as head coach of boys Classic participants, among 116 all-time head coaches in the event history.

About the teams Logansport Team Lawrence North 7-0 Record 6-1 #9 IBCA #6 4A #3 Associated Press 4A #8 #46 (4A #37) Sagarin #10 (4A #10) 186 Strength of Schedule (Sagarin) Offensive avg Defensive avg Avg. margin 8.5 Logansport (7-0, IBCA #9, AP 4A #3) is led by two standout seniors who have the Berries 7-0 for a 2 nd straight year. 6 4 senior wing Jalen Adaway averages 18.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists, with 6 0 senior point guard Matt Jennings (Grace College) averaging 18.4 points and 4.4 assists. Senior Hunter DeHaven and sophomore Sam Skaggs each average just over 10 points per game as well. Head coach Pat Skaggs is in four seasons at Logansport and in 25 seasons as an Indiana high school basketball head coach. This will be the first appearance in the Classic for the Logansport boys. Led by future Indiana Miss Basketball Whitney Jennings, the Logansport girls were consolation winners in the 2012 event. Lawrence North (6-1, IBCA #6, AP 4A #8) continues to win under one of the state s most successful head coaches. The Wildcats are led by a trio of veterans. 6 7 junior forward Kevin Easley, Jr., 5 10 junior guard Antwaan Cushingberry and 6 9 senior center Ra Kpedi each average double figure scoring this season. Head coach Jack Keefer, a 2007 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, is the fourth winningest coach in Indiana high school basketball history. The only head boys basketball coach in Lawrence North history, he is (.712) in his 44-year career, including 688 victories in 41 seasons leading the Wildcats program. The Wildcats fourth appearance in the Classic will put their perfect record in the event on the line. Lawrence North has won the Classic championship in each of their three previous appearances (1979, 1989, 2003) and is the only program in girls or boys history to win the title three times. Additionally, Keefer joins HOF inductees George Griffith and J.R. Holmes as the only men to lead teams into the Classic four times.

New Albany Team Warsaw 5-2 Record 6-2 #4 IBCA #16 4A #4 Associated Press NR #5 (4A #5) Sagarin #27 (4A #26) 4 Strength of Schedule (Sagarin) Offensive avg Defensive avg Avg. margin 16.0 New Albany (5-2, IBCA #4, AP 4A #4) is in defense of their A championship with recent records set by their superstar and head coach. 6 5 junior Romeo Langford is averaging 29.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists while senior guard Isaac Hibbard averages 12.4 points per contest. Named MaxPreps.com s National Sophomore of the Year a season ago, Langford became New Albany s career scoring leader on December 20 and enters the Classic with 1,508 career points (24.7 career ppg). Head coach Jim Shannon has a record in 19 seasons at New Albany and recently became just the 28 th coach in Indiana boys high school basketball history to reach 500 career wins. His career record in 33 years places him 10 th in Indiana high school wins among active coaches. New Albany makes their fourth appearance in the boys Classic, following their 1980 and 2001 consolation game victories and in defense of their 2007 Classic championship. Warsaw (6-2, IBCA #16) follows up a 25-2 regional champion team riding their star to another successful start. 6 3 senior guard Kyle Mangas (Indiana Wesleyan) averages 21.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He enters the Classic 31 points shy of 1,000 career points, a mark only 11 Warsaw players have reached. Senior Jeremy David averages 5.7 points and 4.4 rebounds and junior Ross Johnson averages 5.7 points. Head coach Doug Ogle is (.685) in 15 seasons at Warsaw, having led the Tigers to five sectional championships, two regional titles and an appearance in the A state finals. Warsaw makes their third appearance in the boys Classic, following their 1994 Classic championship and 2010 consolation game victory. The Warsaw girls were winners of the 1988 and 2003 girls events.

Of Note With Logansport making their first appearance in the boys Classic, 100 schools have now participated in the 40-year event. Each of the head coaches this year have previously led teams in the event, meaning a total of 116 head coaches have led teams into the event all-time. Coaching Class is in Session The four head coaches in today s boys Classic have a combined 2,680 games of experience in Indiana high school basketball, with a remarkable total of 1,809 combined wins. Jack Keefer (749 wins), Jim Shannon (501), Pat Skaggs (335) and Doug Ogle (224) have experienced success, with a cumulative.675 career winning percentage amongst them. For the first time in Classic history (boys or girls), each of this year s boys contestants is a previous state championship program. Logansport (1934), Lawrence North (1989, A, A, A), New Albany (1973 & A) and Warsaw (1984) each have IHSAA boys basketball state championships in their past, including one one-class title for each of them. Power Programs unsurprisingly given their state championship pedigrees, this year s field features three of the best programs in Indiana over the past three decades. Since the opening of the season (30 years), New Albany (.771), Lawrence North (.746) and Warsaw (.733) are 1 st, 2 nd and 4 th, respectively, in Indiana high school boys basketball winning percentage. In the past 28 years (since season), this year s semifinal opponents New Albany (.779) and Warsaw (.746) have the two highest winning percentages in the state. Boyhood friends - Although now coaching on opposite ends of the state and on opposite sides of the brackets in today s event, Logansport head coach Pat Skaggs and New Albany head coach Jim Shannon have a long personal history. The pair grew up one year apart in age and lived one street away from each other in the Grandview neighborhood of Anderson. Skaggs & Shannon were teammates under HOF coach Norm Held at Anderson H.S. Shannon graduated in 1978 and Skaggs was a senior on the Indians 1979 state runner-up team. Skaggs Anderson high school career also remains intertwined with this year s team, even ignoring his connection to Jim Shannon. Skaggs was the leading scorer (24 points) in Anderson s 1979 state semifinal win over Argos. Argos leading scorer that game was Doug Jennings the father of Skaggs senior point guard Matt Jennings. Following their state tournament meeting, Skaggs and Jennings played again many times on the same court they became teammates at the University of Indianapolis, playing under HOF inductee Billy Keller. Lawrence North coach Jack Keefer joins Richmond s George Griffith and Bloomington South s J.R. Holmes as the only coaches to bring teams to the Classic four times. Keefer is undefeated in Classic appearances and the winningest coach in event history. His teams are 6-0 in the Classic with championships in 1979, 1989 and Griffith and Holmes each have five wins in their teams appearances. Keefer also sets the mark for longest tenure between HOF Classic appearances. First coaching in the event in 1979, he returns 37 years later with his latest team. Keefer extends the distinction that he already owned with 24 years between his 1979 and 2003 appearances. Excluding Keefer, the next longest tenure between Classic appearances belongs to Al Rhodes (1994 Warsaw, 2014 Penn).

Logansport enters the Classic one of 20 remaining undefeated IHSAA boys basketball teams this season, as of Monday, December 26. Warsaw junior Jack Grose has plenty of basketball bloodlines. He is the son of 1985 Indiana Mr. Basketball Jeff Grose, who was a junior on the Tigers 1984 state champion team. The family connection extends further to the Classic Lucas Grose, Jack s older brother was a starter on their team that participated in the 2010 event. Scenarios If Lawrence North wins the event, they would extend history. The only program to win the boys Classic three times, a fourth would be unprecedented. The Wildcats have won every time they ve appeared in the Classic, in 1979 at Hinkle Fieldhouse, 1989 at Assembly Hall and 2003 in the New Castle Fieldhouse. If New Albany or Warsaw wins the event, they would become just the 6 th program to win multiple championships in boys Classic history (Anderson, Anderson Highland, Cathedral and Muncie Central have won two; Lawrence North is the only three-time boys Classic champion). If Logansport wins the event, they will become the 34 th different school to win the boys Classic. The Fight for Four. Beyond Lawrence North s attempt for a 4 th boys Classic title, a Warsaw championship would put the school atop the heap in total Classic championships. A Tigers title would be the 2 nd for their boys program and match their two girls Classic titles (1988 & 2003). No school has won a combined four Classic titles. The only other school with three combined Classic championships is Ben Davis (2 girls and 1 boys title). Regardless of outcome, Warsaw is ensured to remain one of only seven schools to win both a boys and girls Classic. Batesville, Ben Davis, Center Grove, Hamilton Southeastern, Martinsville, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) and Warsaw are the only schools to do so and no other school has the chance to join them this year. A Lawrence North or Warsaw championship would also give that school more wins in combined Classic history than any other. Here s a look at the standings of other schools, combining girls and boys Classic appearances: Ben Davis 7-1 (4-0 girls, 3-1 boys) Warsaw 7-1 (4-0 girls, 3-1 boys) Bloomington South 7-5 (6-4 boys, 1-1 girls) Lawrence North 6-0 (6-0 boys) Center Grove 6-2 (4-2 girls, 2-0 boys) Mt. Vernon (Fortville) 6-6 (3-3 girls, 3-3 boys) New Castle 6-8 (4-6 boys, 2-2 girls) Bedford North Lawrence 5-3 (4-2 girls, 1-1 boys) Noblesville 5-5 (3-3 boys, 2-2 girls) Rushville 5-5 (5-5 girls)
