VERNON MARAUDERS (5-2, 2-0 HHC) at NEW PALESTINE DRAGONS (4-4, 2-1 HHC) 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at New Palestine High School Broadcast: HancockCountySports.com After facing one county rival in front of a nearcapacity crowd on Friday night, the New Palestine Dragons return home to face another county rival tonight, the Mt. Vernon Marauders. The two schools are facing each other for the 52nd time this evening. The only school New Palestine has played more is Greenfield-Central (54 meetings). The Dragons enter tonight with a 2-1 conference record, and a victory would put them in first place in HHC play. However, they face a Mt. Vernon team that has won 29 consecutive HHC games, a streak that began on Dec. 5, The Dragons come off a game against Greenfield- Central where they had a strong start and finish, but fell Emma Laughlin led the Dragons with eight points, four assists and eight rebounds. Haley Stratman added eight points and Natalie Kehrt scored seven. The Dragons outrebounded G-C 29-19, but a Cougar run spanning the second and third quarters allowed them to pull away from a game that was tied at early in the second. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak in which the Dragons held both opponents below 25 percent shooting in wins over Delta (49-26) and Shelbyville (40-31). In both games, the Dragons allowed just 12 points in a half of action -- the first half against Delta, the second half against Shelbyville -- and used a big second-half run to put the game away. With two juniors, eight sophomores and two freshmen on the varsity roster, the Dragons are one of the youngest teams in the state. For the second straight year, the Dragons have no seniors on the active roster. Season highs The Dragons have had tremendous balance on the season, with six different players -- Haley Stratman, Emma Laughlin, Natalie Kehrt, Raegan McMurray, Carly Hackler and Gia Nitschke -- having shared highscorer honors. Five different players have led the team in rebounding. Haley Stratman s career-high 25 points in the opener against Southport are the most points scored by a Dragon this season. Her 11 rebounds against Delta are the most boards by a Dragon this season. Probable starters NEW PALESTINE STARTERS F 34 Natalie Kehrt 5-10 So. C 23 Carly Hackler 5-9 So. 3 New Palestine Athletics A balanced win In the victory over Shelbyville on Dec. 10, the Dragons had tremendous balance, with Gia Nitschke scoring a season-high nine points and both Haley Stratman and Emma Laughlin scoring eight. Raegan McMurray scored six points to give the Dragons a solid, balanced effort. It was also the second straight game in which the Dragons held an opponent to 25 percent shooting or less. Stratman also had a career-high 11 rebounds in that contest, as the Dragons outboarded Shelbyville Roaring 20s New Palestine s victory over Delta on Dec. 7 featured a couple of 20s. It was the Dragons first time holding a team in the 20s in 21 games, since a victory on Nov. 27, 2012 against Arlington. It also featured a 20-0 run by the Dragons, which spanned 8:15 of clock time and allowed NP to build a 21-point lead. The Dragons also held Delta to below 20 percent shooting, at 18 percent. Natalie Kehrt had a season-high three blocks and Emma Laughlin a season-best six steals for the Dragons in that game. Haley Stratman led the way offensively with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Solid start Sophomore Haley Stratman had a hot start against Southport, hitting 7-of- 11 from 3-point range in the Dragons victory. Her 25-point effort is the most since Bethany Murrell topped the 25-point mark in the season. Stratman hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to rally the Dragons to the victory on Nov. 16. Youth is served The Dragons might be the youngest team in Indiana, with an active roster that does not include a senior for the second consecutive season. However, the Dragons return all five starters and virtually their entire varsity roster from a year ago. Sophomore Haley Stratman was New Palestine s freshman scoring recordholder last season, scoring 211 points. The next level NPHS currently has one alumna playing college basketball in Bethany Murrell, a sophomore at Florida Gulf Coast University. She is the first NPHS grads to play collegiately since 2009 graduate Marissa Morris (Danville Area CC) and 2007 graduate Katie Lyons, who started for the University of Indianapolis. In addition, the alumnae list has one more active college athlete graduate Danielle Owens is a starting center back on the Franklin College soccer team. Family ties The Dragons have several strong basketball connections on the roster. Natalie Kehrt is the daughter of head coach Brian Kehrt, who coached the NPHS boys team from Haley Stratman s older sister, Liz, is a member of the Butler University basketball team. JV update The Dragon junior varsity team is 4-4 on the young season, having beaten Southport, Scecina, Delta and Shelbyville. A new era NPHS coach Brian Kehrt is new to the New Palestine girls program, but not new to the bench or NPHS. He is the school s all-time winningest boys coach, compiling a record of from His teams won two HHC titles and a sectional championship in that tenure. Coach Kehrt is the 12th girls basketball coach in the program s 39-yaear history. He is the second person to coach both the New Palestine boys and girls teams as a varsity coach, joining Carl Hughes, who coached the girls team for a half-season in and later coached the boys team for four seasons from A graduate of Shelbyville High School and Ball State University, Kehrt teaches math at NPHS.
