Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. u Syracuse has won its road-opener in each of the past three seasons. In , the Orange opened the year away from the Carrier Dome at Washington State. Syracuse came out victorious, Its last loss in its first road game of a season came in Syracuse suffered an loss at Georgetown on Jan. 4, u The team opened the year with a victory against Fordham on Nov. 16. It marks the eighth straight season Syracuse won its season-opener. The Orange own a 8-1 mark in season-openers under head coach Quentin Hillsman. u All of the Syracuse women s basketball games will be available on Syracuse s flagship station, ESPN 97.7 FM/1200 AM and on Orange All-Access on Cuse.com. Peterson led the team with a personal-best 19 points against the Rams. She made a career-best eight field goals on the day, as well. u With the Orange trailing by three points with less than one minutes remaining in the first half, Peterson hit a pair of jumpers to give the host team a lead headed into the locker room. Syracuse maintained the momentum after the halftime break, opening the latter 20 minutes with a 10-2 run en route to a victory. SERIES BREAKDOWN u Syracuse and Duquesne will meet for the third time in series history on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Orange have beat the Dukes in their two previous meetings, with its latest victory against Duquesne coming on Dec. 26, Syracuse won GEARING DOWN u In its first game of the regular season, the Syracuse defense geared down in an impressive showing. The Orange held Fordham to 42 points on.286 shooting from the field. It marked the lowest scoring output by an opposing team since Syracuse topped Pittsburgh, 67-36, on Feb. 23, u The Orange defense was disruptive from the start. Syracuse forced 22 turnovers in its season-opener on Nov. 16. It marked the most turnovers committed by an opponent since Wake Forest had 26 turnovers on March 2, u Eight members of the Syracuse basketball team finished with at least one steal against the Rams. Junior guards Cornelia Fondren and Brianna Butler each led the team with two apiece. u In addition to the strong pressure from the guards, the Syracuse front court held strong around the rim, with sophomore forward Bria Day swatting a career-high three shots. 3 Head Coach Quentin Hillsman u Ninth Season at Syracuse u Ninth Season Overall SPARK OFF THE BENCH u Junior forward Taylor Ford served as a spark off the bench for the Orange in its season-opening win against Fordham on Nov. 16. Ford finished with 11 points and six rebounds against the Rams. She ranked second on the team in points and rebounds on the day. u Ford knocked down three 3-point field goals for the game, one shy of her personal-best. The Bronx, N.Y. native was the Orange s first substitute and made her presence known, sinking a 3-point field goal 20 seconds in. u She also was a monster on the boards for Syracuse. Ford pulled down six rebounds on the day, including five offensive boards. Her five offensive rebounds led the team in its season-opener, as well. The Hillsman File Education... St. Mary s (Md.), 1993 Family... wife, Shandrist, and son, Kyan u Quentin Hillsman was named Syracuse s fourth head women s basketball coach on October 17, u Entering his ninth season as a collegiate head coach, Hillsman owns a (.630) overall record. u Hillsman had led the Orange to seven consecutive postseason appearances, 12 postseason victories, and seven straight winning seasons. u Under Hillsman, Syracuse has participated in the NCAA Tournament three times. Four of the five newest Orange made their Syracuse debut in the season-opening victory against Fordham on Nov. 16. Senior guard Diamond Henderson scored seven points in 11 minutes of play. Freshman center Amber Witherspoon tallied two points, two rebounds, and one blocked shot. Senior guard Maggie Morrison dished out two assists, while freshman guard Danielle Minott played for four minutes. u Sophomore center Michelle Van Dyke, Minott, and Witherspoon all came in looking to see time in their first year. Van Dyke originally came to Syracuse with the intent to join the volleyball program. Minott and Witherspoon, on the other hand, are two heralded recruits and both ranked among the top players at their position in the Class of u Henderson and Morrison both transferred to Syracuse and are eligible to play in Henderson was a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree at Tennessee Tech. Morrison spent two years at Vanderbilt, before joining the Orange last season. She had to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION u Duquesne is one of 21 teams in NCAA Division I women s basketball that has won 20 or more games each season since In addition, the team has posted six straight postseason appearances, including a trip to the second round of the 2014 WNIT. This season, the team was picked to finish in seventh place in the 14-team Atlantic 10. u The Dukes return 39 percent of its scoring from a year ago. Senior guard Olivia Bresnahan and junior guard April Robinson return for Duquesne after starting a combined 53 games last season. Robinson averaged points per game, which ranks first among returning players. u In its first game of the regular season, Duquesne suffered a loss to Princeton on Nov. 16. Junior guard April Robinson led the way with 19 points on the day. PRESEASON HYPE u For the first time in Syracuse women s basketball program history, the team ranked in the top 25 of the both the Preseason Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls. Syracuse was ranked No. 24 in the AP Poll and checks in at No. 25 in the coaches rankings. u Syracuse was ranked No. 24 in the country in the USA TODAY Sports Weekly Special Edition College Basketball Preview, which hit newsstands on Oct. 7. The USA TODAY Sports Weekly Special Edition College Basketball Preview provides projections and analysis heading into the men s and women s basketball seasons. USA TODAY Sports Tess Quinlan projected the preseason Top 25 teams in women s basketball. u The Orange was ranked as high as No. 20 in the nation in the AP Poll during the season. It marked the highest the team had ever appeared in the Associated Press rankings in school history. Syracuse peaked at No. 23 in the coaches poll last season. PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH u The Syracuse University women s basketball team was selected to finish in sixth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for the season, as announced by the conference on ACC Media Day on Oct. 22. The Orange was selected to finish in sixth place in both the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches polls. u 2014 national runner-up Notre Dame was the preseason favorite in both preseason polls. Preseason ACC Player of the Year, by both the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches, junior guard Jewell Loyd will pace the Fighting Irish in u In both the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches polls, the same top eight teams were selected. Duke was picked to finish as runner-up in the 15-team conference. Louisville, North Carolina, and Florida State rounded out the top five. Syracuse was selected to finish in sixth, while Georgia Tech and Miami were picked to finish in seventh and eighth, respectively. u Junior guard Brittney Sykes was selected to the Preseason All-ACC Team by the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches. The Newark, N.J. native led the team in scoring last season en route to All-ACC Second Team honors. Sykes was one of five student-athletes to earn All-ACC honors in and be named to the Preseason All-ACC Team by both the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches. CHALLENGE AWAITS u The regular season slate presents a daunting task for the Syracuse women s basketball team. The Orange will take on 11 teams, possibly 12 that participated in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Four of the eight national quarterfinalists from a year ago occupy a spot on the squad s schedule for the upcoming season. u Six of Syracuse s opponents were ranked in the top 25 of the Preseason AP and USA Today Coaches Polls. No. 3/3 Notre Dame, No. 7/7 Duke, No. 8/9 Baylor, No. 12/11 Louisville, No. 13/13 North Carolina, and No. 14/15 Michigan State all occupy a spot on the Syracuse regular season schedule. In addition, the Orange may take on No. 2/2 South Carolina in the Junkanoo Jam. u The squad will prepare itself for the ACC with a tough non-conference schedule. The team will head to the Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam in late November and will face East Carolina and Wisconsin or South Carolina. Following its international trip, the club will host 2013 Big Ten regular season champion Penn State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. At the Florida Sunshine Tournament, the Orange will matchup against Baylor and Michigan State. u Conference play will test the program night in and night out. Eight ACC teams played in last year s edition of the NCAA Tournament, including national runner-up Notre Dame. North Carolina and Louisville also made trips to the Elite Eight. 3

She ranked second on the team in scoring and 17th in the ACC with an average of 14.5 points per game, as well. u Butler matched her career-high with seven 3-point field goals in a 25-point effort at Boston College on Feb. 16. She tripled her previous personal-best in assist with 12 to go with 16 points and seven rebounds in a win against Virginia on Jan. 26. CUSE IN THE NCAAS u The Orange made its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance in , third in eight years under Quentin Hillsman and sixth overall. Sixth-seeded Syracuse recorded its first NCAA win, beating 11th-seeded Chattanooga, 59-53, in the first round on March 22, u Guards Brittney Sykes and Brianna Butler each recorded double-doubles with Sykes tallying 13 points and 12 rebounds and Butler notching 13 points and 10 rebounds in the Orange s first tourney win. Center Shakeya Leary led the team with 15 points and grabbed eight boards, five on the offensive end. u Syracuse s late efforts weren t enough to overcome No. 3 seed Kentucky and its historic season came to a close in with loss in the second round on March 24, 2014 at Memorial Coliseum. The Orange had three players score in double-figures with Brianna Butler leading the team with 15 points. Briana Day added 13 points and Alexis Peterson matched her career high with 12 points. SYKES NAMED ALL-ACC u In its first ACC season, SU s Brittney Sykes became the Orange s first-ever All-ACC honoree on March 11, 2014 when she was named to the all-conference second team in voting conducted by the ACC Blue Ribbon Panel. u Syracuse s leading scorer at 17.1 points per game in the regular season, the guard was one of just four underclassmen named to either the 10-member first team or five-member second team. u It was Sykes second all-conference honor. She was named BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in TAKING CARE OF THE BALL u Syracuse featured some of the top ball-handling playmakers in the ACC last season.
