UNC will battle a pair of NAIA schools in Judson College and Hope International in the two-day classic. Both of those schools are off to slow starts this season while UNC turned its 0-2 start into six consecutive victories. The winning streak is the longest for the team since the season. If they win both this week the eight game streak would be the longest since the program won 10 straight in the season when UNC set the school record for victories with 24. The school record for consecutive wins is 14 set in the campaign. The backcourt duo of Sean Nolen and Kevin Knudson have been lighting up opponents this season. Each has connected on 27 three-pointers (with Knudson attempting one more three than Nolen has) to share the team lead after eight games. Each is on the pace to connect on 87 three-pointers this season, which would smash Derek Chaney s school record of 68 set during the season. Nolen has already equalled the UNC singlegame three-point record (8) this year. Following the Chuck Stephens Classic, UNC returns home in the new year to start its final season of North Central Conference play. The Last Time We Met...: First meetings. About Judson College: Judson College, an NAIA school out to Elgin, Ill., has struggled to open the season, winning only two of its first 10 games on the year. The Eagles own victories over Mt. St. Claire and Illinois-Springfield. About Hope International: Hope International, located in Fullerton, Calif., comes to the Chuck Stephens classic searching for their first victory of the season. The Royals have dropped their first seven contest on , mostly to other California NAIA schools. Their closest ballgame of the year was a 23-point loss to LaSierra at home on Nov. 20. They were also blown out by Azusa Pacific on Dec. 7. opponent information Another Streak: UNC has won six games in a row overall, its longest streak since winning seven games in a row during the season. If the Bears can win two games at the Chuck Stephens Classic and extend that streak to nine games, it would be the longest streak since winning 10 games in a row in the season, when UNC finished 24-6 overall (a school record for victories) and won the NCC Championship. A Gridiron Warrior Shines in Basketball Debut: Freshman basketball player Vincent Jackson, fresh off a season with the Division II playoff semifinalist Bears football team, had a nice debut for UNC in the Bears victory over Western State unc notes on Dec. 17. Jackson was 3-3 from the field, 1-1 from three-point range, grabbed a rebound and had a steal in only eight minutes of action. Jackson, who has sophomore eligibility in football, was a wide receiver and returns specialist for the UNC team that 12-2 and won the NCC Championship. Home Court Streak: With their pair of home wins over Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian, the Bears extended their home court winning streak to 10 games dating back to last season. UNC s last home loss was a setback to South Dakota back on January 4, The Bears will look to extend that steak when they host St. Cloud State on Jan. 2. FG Percentage is Up: As a team, UNC is shooting 51.9% from the field this season. In their last five games, the Bears have shot 50% or better from the field including 60% against Western State. Getting to the Free Throw Line: UNC is making the most of its opportunities this season and getting to the free-throw line. UNC has made 133 free-throws on the season, almost as many as their opponents have attempted (139). The Bears are hitting free-throws at a 73% clip, which ranks 3rd in the NCC. 4 University of Northern Colorado Bears Men s Basketball Scorching the Nets From Deep: UNC has found early season success from behind the arc this season, connecting on (46%) of their three-point attempts. At the same time, the Bears opponents have struggled hitting only (28%) from deep. Nolen Ties Three-Point Record: Junior Sean Nolen tied the UNC single-game record versus Colorado Christian (12/7) when he canned eight three-pointers. That tied the mark that is also currently held by Derek Chaney (93-94 vs. South Dakota State). Nolen also tied the Butler-Hancock Hall record for three s made in a game, that was held by Chaney and Jason Garrow of Augustana. His 12 three-pointers attempted in that game broke the UNC record for three s attempted in a game (previously 11 held by five other people). NCC Leaders: Junior guard Sean Nolen ranks in the NCC in points (9th, 16.6), assists (2nd, 5.57) and three-pointers made (1st, 3.29). Senior Kevin Knudson ranks 10th in scoring (16.0) while Josh Nigut comes in at number 20 (12.7). Nigut is seventh in rebounding (6.7). Nigut is also shooting the ball well, and ranks second in the NCC at 62.3%. As a team, UNC leads the NCC in rebounding defense (26.9), three-point field goal percentage (.437) and three-point field goal defense (.286). Big Man Improvement: Sophomore center Josh Nigut is producing career numbers this season after dropping 40-plus pounds in the off-season. Nigut is averaging 12.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game through eight games this season. Nigut also already produced career-highs in both points and rebounds this season after only scoring in double figures once during his freshman season. He has logged 178 total minutes of playing time this season, after logging only 221 total minutes as a freshman. Moving Up the Career Charts: With eight assists vs. Colorado Christian, junior point guard Sean Nolen moved to 9th place on the UNC careers assists list. Nolen is only five assists away (currently at 218) from moving into 7th place. 100 Career Wins: UNC s victory over Adams State on Nov. 26 marked the 100th career coaching victory for UNC head coach Craig Rasmuson. A Sign of Thing to Come: Last season, the Bears finished with a overall record, their first winning season since It was only the second winning season for the program in the past 13 years. 5 University of Northern Colorado Bears Men s Basketball Favorable NCC Schedule: This season s North Central Conference schedule opens up very much in the favor of the Bears. UNC will play its first four conference contests in Butler-Hancock Hall, and five of its first six overall NCC games. Unfortunately, UNC will have to play seven of its last 10 overall NCC games on the road. Bears on the Radio: The plans for broadcasting UNC games on the radio and via the internet have been completed. KFKA plans to broadcast all UNC men s basketball games (home and away) starting with the beginning of the North Central Conference season in January. Troy Coverdale, the new sports director at KFKA-AM 1310, will be handling the play-by-play duties for both men s and women s basketball. Bears Picked Eighth in Pre-Season NCC Poll: The UNC men s basketball team was picked to finish eighth in a preseason poll of league-wide media members. The poll picks South Dakota State to repeat as the league champion, as the Jackrabbits received 12 of 18 possible first-place votes. North Dakota was tabbed second and received four first-place votes and were followed in the poll by Nebraska-Omaha, St. Cloud State, South Dakota, Minnesota State, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado and Augustana. Last season, UNC was picked to finish last in the NCC and ended the campaign with a 9-9 conference record which was sixth. Blue & Gold Luncheon: Monday s during the season, head coach Craig Rasmuson and all in-season UNC coaches will speak at the weekly Blue & Gold Luncheon.
