The Bears and Wolverines met Jan. 17 in Butler-Hancock Hall and the Bears dominated the middle part of the game, leading by nine points with 5:06 to play. But UVSC had one last run left and outscored the Bears 14-2 the rest of the way to pick up the win in front of the largest UNC home crowd in 13 years. That night belonged to junior Ronnie Price who hit on shots and scored 33 points for the Wolverines. UNC will be looking to extend its winning streak to two games with a win in Utah, as the Bears bring wins in three of their last five games into this week s action. The game will also play a part in seeding for the National Provisional Tournament to be held March 4-5 in Fort Myers, Fla. The four participating schools include UNC, Utah Valley State, Longwood and Florida Gulf Coast and the teams will be seeded based on record. The Bears are locked into the No. 3 seed in the tournament (with Longwood as No.4) but UVSC and FGCU are battling for the No. 1 seed. FGCU is 20-4 with one game remaining (Palm Beach Atlantic) while Utah Valley is 19-5 with two games remaining (Western New Mexico & UNC). The Bears will face the No. 2 seed on March 4 at a time to be determined. The win over Johnson & Wales on Saturday (93-57) was the 50th for head coach Craig Rasmuson at UNC. probable starters Northern Colorado * = assists per game No. Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Cl. The Last Time We Met: Utah Valley beat UNC on Jan. 17, 2004 at Butler- Hancock Hall. A nine-point lead with 5:06 to play in the game was not enough for the Bears, who scored only two points over that final five minutes. A three-pointer by freshman Matt Kline gave UNC a nine-point lead with 6:18 left in the game, forcing a Utah Valley timeout and sending the season-high crowd of 1,576 into a frenzy. Following two UVSC free throws a Kline layup made the margin once again nine with 5:06 to play. But after six straight points by the Wolverines, star Ronnie Price drilled a threepointer to tie the game with 1:29 to play. With 58.8 seconds left, UNC lost control of the ball and Utah Valley forced a jump ball and a Bears turnover. On the ensuing possession Russell Wesley made his first free throw and missed his second before Carl Lee came up with a huge offensive board forcing UNC to foul the Wolverines again. Price made two free throw setting up a final possession for UNC. With just over two seconds on the clock, UNC s Michael Frazier took the inbounds pass and had a look from the top of the key; his shot was online but did not fall as the Bears slipped to their fifth straight loss. Price was the hero of the night for Utah Valley, scoring 33 points on shooting from the field. UNC got a career-high 14 points from Trei Steward while Vincent Jackson also added 14 and a career-best seven assists. Frazier and Erik Olson added 10 apiece. On Break the Record the Bears did not set the Butler- Hancock Hall attendance record, but the 1,576 fans were the most since 2,003 fans saw UNC play South Dakota on Jan. 25, UNC lost that game About Utah Valley State: The Wolverines have won 17 of their last 18 games and have only lost once (67-64 at Robert Morris) since beating UNC earlier this season. UVSC has won four in a row entering this week and will play at Western New Mexico on Tuesday before hosting UNC. Last time out, UVSC beat fellow D-I provisional member Longwood 76-45, a team they could see again at the National Provisional Tournament. The Wolverines have not played at home since Jan. 31 when they beat Johnson & Wales. Ronnie Price leads the team with a 19.0 points per game average. Have Your Frequent Flyer Cards Ready: With the move to Division I, the Bears have had to go far and wide this season to play games, as only nine contests (of 28 total) were home games. At the conclusion of the season, the Bears will have traveled 21,331 miles by bus, van and plane for regular season competition since Nov. 21. The longest trips were nearly 3,500 miles to Rutgers and 4,000 miles to Fort Myers, Fla. Rasmuson Reaches 50: With a victory over Johnson & Wales on Feb. 21, UNC head coach Craig Rasmuson notched his 50th career victory as head coach of the Bears. National Provisional Tournament Field Almost Set: UNC will conclude its season on Mar. 4 and 5 at the National Provisional Tournament in Ft. Myers, Fla. The field features four teams making the move up a division this season, UNC, Utah Valley State and Longwood (moving to Division I) and host Florida Gulf Coast (moving to Division II). The tournament will seed teams by regular season record and entering this week UNC (6-19) is locked into the No. 3 spot while Longwood (4-21) is locked into the No. 4 spot. UNC will play the No. 2 seed in the opening round, although that team is still to be determined. UVSC and FGCU are battling for the No. 1 seed. FGCU is 20-4 with one game remaining (Palm Beach Atlantic) while Utah Valley is 19-5 with two games remaining (Western New Mexico & UNC). Times are set for 6 and 8 p.m. eastern. Gholston Goes Out With Win: Lone senior Bryson Gholston got a victory in his Butler-Hancock finale, when UNC beat Johnson & Wales (Feb. 21). The Bakersfield, Calif. native scored eight points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in front of 938 fans who came to say goodbye to him. Gebhardt Getting His Time: Sophomore guard Chris Gebhardt has started the last three games after hitting the game-winning shot at Texas A&M-International on Feb. 5. Against Johnson & Wales (Feb. 21), Gebhardt tied his career-high with seven rebounds while dishing out a career-best eight assists in 23 minutes of playing time. East Coast Travel: It is hard to believe that in its 100-plus years of basketball, the UNC men s team has never played a road game UNC Men s Basketball Game Notes 3

4 University of Northern Colorado Bears Men s Basketball against a team in a state that borders the Atlantic Ocean until playing at Rutgers on Feb. 1. The Bears, who have played mainly a regional schedule over the years, had not even played in the Eastern time zone since Dec. 4, 1978 when they challenged Purdue before playing at Eastern Michigan earlier this season. Before that Purdue matchup, UNC had not played a Eastern time zone game not in Indiana since playing Kentucky on Dec. 1, UNC will not have long to wait until its next trip east... they will play in Ft. Myers, Fla. at the National Provisional Tournament on March 4-5. Bears Allow 100: Rutgers University scored 102 points against the Bears in their game (Feb. 17) marking the first time in 95 games that UNC had allowed an opponent to score 100 or more points. RU won the game by 50 points, the worst loss for UNC since losing at Colorado State by 61 points in the season. Lineup Switcheroo: Thanks to the large amount of injuries the Bears have suffered this season, coach Craig Rasmuson has used 11 different starting lineups during this season. Bears Finally Grab Road Victory: UNC s victory over Texas A&M-International (Feb. 5) marked the first road victory for the Bears in almost a calendar year. With the win UNC snapped a 12-game losing streak in away contests dating back to last season when they won at Minnesota State on Feb. 28. UNC has lost 19 of its last 21 road games dating back to the beginning of last season. Young Coaching Staff: Among Division I men s basketball coaching staffs, the UNC men s staff is the second youngest staff currently in the nation. Craig Rasmuson (35), Jeff Culver (30), Alan Walls (29) and Nate Vaughn (25) average out to 29.8 years of ago, trailing only the staff from Lehigh which averages out to 29.3 years of ago. The rest of the top 10 are: High Point (30.0), Wofford (30.5), Albany (31.0), Radford (31.0), Illinois State (31.5), The Citadel (31.8), Campbell (31.8) and Virginia Commonwealth (32.2). Injury Bug Bites Bears: Five players the Bears were counting on heavily this season are currently not playing due to injuries or redshirts. Senior point guard Sean Nolen has a broken foot and had surgery on Dec. 15, thus ending his season. He has played in six games this year (20% of UNC s schedule) and would still be eligible for a medical hardship. Junior Ari Zandman Zeman suffered a knee injury in the preseason and also had surgery on Dec. 15. Senior guard Parish Brockman also has a bad knee which allowed him to play in only two regular season games and he will also miss the rest of the season. A leg injury to freshman Kirk Archibeque has kept him out of the last month and he is also likely done for the remainder of the season; Archibeque played in six games before his injury. Also added into the mix is senior James Randle who is sitting out this season to compete against a full Division I schedule in Randle, who also competes for the UNC track and field team, was a Division II All-American in the high jump last division I independent standings Overall (as of 2/23/04) W L Pct. 5 University of Northern Colorado Bears Men s Basketball season, clearing 6 11 to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships. Just Get to 80: If the Bears hit 80 points in a game, there is a good chance they are going to win. UNC is 4-0 this year when they reach 80 points, but 2-19 when they fail to hit that mark. Last season the Bears were 8-2 when they reached the 80-point plateau. Home Sweet Home: UNC is (.607) all-time at Butler-Hancock Hall, which opened on Feb. 4, The Bears were 4-5 this season at home. Largest Crowd in 13 Years Comes to Butler-Hancock Hall: On Jan. 17, the UNC marketing staff was trying to break the Butler-Hancock Hall attendance record of 4,674 in a game against Utah Valley. UNC s defense also came to play, limiting the Tigers to only 50 points, the lowest an opponent had scored since Fort Lewis scored 50 in a loss on Nov. 13, 1998, the opening game of that season. Bears Record Back-to-Back Wins: Wins over Colorado College (Jan. 29) and Texas A&M-International (Feb. 5) marked the first backto-back wins for the Bears since the season when they won eight games in a row during the month of December. 6 University of Northern Colorado Bears Men s Basketball with ISU next season as the Bears will play at the Iowa State Thanksgiving Tournament next year. Bears Play in California For First Time in 13 Years: UNC s Jan. 20 game at Loyola Marymount (a loss) marked the first time in 13 years the Bears had played in the Golden State (UNC lost three games on that trip). UNC is still looking for its first win in California since beating Cal-Irvine on Jan. 15, The LMU game served as a homecoming for a pair of UNC players, senior Bryson Gholston (Bakersfield, Calif.) and junior Michael Frazier (San Jacinto, Calif.). Bears and Buffs Meet For Only Second Time in Past 67 Years: When UNC and Colorado played on Jan. 10, it was the first meeting between the schools since Dec. 16, 1978 and was only the second meeting between the two schools in the past 67 years. CU won the game and has now won five straight in the series, although UNC still holds a advantage all-time. The two teams have already contracted to play in each of the next two seasons in Boulder. Gholston Gains Weight and Confidence: Senior forward Bryson Gholston had his best game in a UNC uniform on Jan. 2 when he scored 11 points and tied a career-high with 10 rebounds in a victory. Gholston had been suffering from a mysterious illness that caused him to lose over 20 pounds during the season. But over Christmas break, Gholston was able to put some of that weight back on and turned in his best game of the season. Against Colorado on Jan. 10, Gholston had 11 points and eight rebounds and he added 10 points against Iowa State on Jan. 12. Orvis Leaves Team: Fifth-year senior guard Heath Orvis has left the UNC basketball team due to personal reasons, the UNC basketball staff announced on Jan. 5. The Longmont native averaged 7.5 points in 13 games this season, 12 of which he started. Orvis, who completed his degree in business in December, is pursuing a job in the business world. 7 University of Northern Colorado Bears Men s Basketball Bears football team during the month. The Streak is Over: UNC ended a nine-game losing streak on Jan. 2 when it defeated Adams State The win prevented UNC from losing 10 games in a row, which would have been the second longest losing streak during a season in school history. The longest losing streak during a single season in school history is 13, during the season. Once in school history three teams combined to lose 22 games in a row, but that was over three different seasons ( ). Head of the Class: UNC freshman Kirk Archibeque might be able to beat his teammate at a game of Trivial Pursuit if the team decided to play. That is because Archibeque graduated from Montezuma- Cortez High with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. and was the valedictorian of his graduating class. Olson Takes Charge: 18 points in the exhibition opener was just signs of things to come from sophomore Erik Olson. Olson scored a career-high 20 points in the regular season opener against Western State and bounced back with 18 points the next night in a loss to Adams State before once again equalling his career-high with 20 against Colorado Mines. This season Olson leads UNC in rebounding (7.2) and is third in scoring (11.8) and has already set career-highs in scoring, rebounding (13), field goals (9), field goals attempted (15), three-pointers made (3), free throws made (6) and attempts (9), assists (8) and steals (4). Olson spent the summer getting stronger and honed his game by playing with an Athletes in Action team that toured Brazil. Gridiron Warrior Arrives: After missing the first four games of the season after completing his junior year of eligibility with the UNC football team, sophomore forward Vincent Jackson saw his first game action of the season on Nov. 29, playing 15 minutes against Colorado Christian. Jackson is arguably one of the best wide receivers in Division I-AA football and helped the Bears football team to a 9-2 overall record and No. 19 ranking this season. Jackson shattered UNC records for receiving yards (1,462), receiving yards per game (132.9), receiving touchdowns (21), allpurpose yards (1,949) and all-purpose yards per game (177.2) in a season, touchdowns in a game (4) and career records for receiving touchdowns (26) and points in a season (126). He was named a second-team I-AA All-American by each the Sports Network and the Associated Press for his outstanding season on the gridiron. Division I Schedule: In their first season of reclassification to Division I, the Bears will play nine games against Division I teams. UNC will play Colorado, Colorado State (exhibition), Denver, Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Loyola Marymount, Rutgers, Texas A&M- Corpus Christi and Texas State. The Bears also play a home-andhome series with Utah Valley State, who is also beginning the move to Division I. The Bears close the season at the National Provisional Tournament that will feature Utah Valley and Longwood (also moving to Division I) and Florida Gulf Coast (who is making the move to Division II). Nolen Sets Single Game Assists Record: By dishing out 14 assists in a victory over Kendall College (Nov. 28), senior point guard Sean Nolen set a new UNC single-game record, eclipising Troy Graefe s record of 13 set against South Dakota State on Feb. 2, Nolen now has 337 assists for his career, which puts him No. 2 all-time in UNC history but is sitting out the remainder of the season with a foot injury and will have to wait until to break the record. A Nice Opening: Although moral victories never count in a team s record, neither do exhibition losses. 8 University of Northern Colorado Bears Men s Basketball season superlatives on Nov. 17 with a game at Colorado State. UNC led by as many as nine in the first half against the defending Mountain West Conference champions and had a three-point lead at the break. CSU would use a 7-0 run to gain control of the contest and eventually won by 15 points, although the game was much closer than the final margin indicated. The Bears were down seven with five minutes to go before fouling, as free throws provided the final margin, the largest of the game. And although the game will not officially count in the team s alltime series record against each other, the showing was much better than the loss CSU handed the Bears in the season. Four New Bears: UNC welcomed four new members into its basketball family on Nov. 12, when four in-state athletes signed national letters of intent to play basketball at UNC starting in the season. Those players were Michael Gordy (Denver, Colo./Denver North H.S.), Jared Lewis (Denver, Colo./Montbello H.S.), Sean Taibi (Pueblo, Colo./East H.S.) and Brian Yarbrough (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.). Gordy (6 5, 215) was a 5A second-team all-state selection last season and scored 57 points at the Adidas Big Time AAU Tournament last summer, breaking Carmelo Anthony s tournament record for points in a game. Lewis (6 2, 170) was a second-team allcity selection his junior season and is the nephew of former Denver Broncos all-pro running back Sammy Wilder. Taibi (6 3, 180) is a two-time all-state selection and is rated the No.1 high school player in the state of Colorado by the Sporting News. Yarbrough (6 10, 255) led class 5A in blocks per game (2.7) last season and led his team in field goal percentage. Like Brother, Like Sister: Junior Michael Frazier is in his first season with the Bears team after transferring from Mt. San Jacinto Junior College. But Frazier already knew somebody when he first got to campus... his sister Carrie. Carrie also attended Mt. San Jacinto Junior College and is in her first season as a forward with the UNC women s basketball team. Bears Make Move to Division I: On May 10, 2002 the UNC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a move for the UNC intercollegiate athletics program to NCAA Division I. The sports year marked the last season for the Bears in the North Central Conference and the NCAA Division II level. This season the Bears begin a four-year reclassification period before officially becoming a Division I school in Over the next four years, UNC will be unable to compete in NCAA postseason competition. UNC will be competiting as an independent during the school year and will hopefully find conference affiliation before the end of the reclassification period. In the season the Bears will be eligible for at-large berths in NCAA Championships.
