When the team gets back from UTPA, they will get on a bus and head to Hastings, Neb. for a rematch with two-time defending NAIA National Champion Hastings College. Hastings defeated UNC in the Bears home opener back on Dec. 1. Since then HC has only lost one other game and have won 17 of 18 games entering the UNC matchup. The week concludes when UNC hosts Colorado College on Saturday night. CC has only won two games this year, although they are currently 2-2 in their last four contests. Last time out, UNC played close with Division I Independent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before being outscored 24-6 over the final 14 minutes of the second half in the loss. UNC s 38 points in the game was the second lowest output in school history (34). With a win, UNC can surpass its win total of a season ago (12). unc probable starters Game 22 Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 Osborne Family Sports Arena (2,500) Hastings, Neb. 6:00 p.m. MT Northern Colorado (* = assists per game) No. Name Pos. (.799) Colorado College Kelly Mahlum (Col. of St. Benedict, 93) At CC (3 yrs.) (.281) Overall (5 yrs.) (.322) opponent information The Series: The meeting between UNC and Texas-Pan Am will be the first between the two schools. UNC and Hastings are meeting for the second time this season and fourth time ever. HC holds a 3-1 advantage in the series overall. UNC and CC have not played since the 1988 season. Colorado College holds a 12-9 advantage in the series although the Bears have won the last four straight, including back on Feb. 13, 1988, the last meeting. About Texas-Pan American: The Broncs bring a modest two-game winning streak into Tuesday s matchup after losing five games in a row, all road contests. Last time out, UTPA went on the road to IP-Fort Wayne and came away with a win. The Broncs hold a 4-4 record at home this season. Texas-Pan Am brings a balanced attack to the court, as only one player, Ashley Roberts (10.5), averages double figure points. But 12 players on the squad average at least 11 minutes a game, giving UTPA a deep bench. About Hastings College: The Broncs are trying to win their third consecutive NAIA Division II National Championship this season. In last week s NAIA poll, HC was ranked No. 6 overall. They have won 17 of their last 18 games and have only lost once (74-73 to Sioux Falls) since playing UNC in December. In that game, the Broncos drained 9-15 threepointers in the opening half to lead by 14. HC is the only team this season, to make 10 or more three-pointers in a game against the Bears. Carly Stucky (15.5) and Sandy Kliewer (14.2) lead the team in scoring. About Colorado College: The Tigers won only their second game of the season on Friday night, beating Johnson & Wales In fact, the teams only wins of the season are over J&W, as CC won on Jan. 7 against the Wildcats. CC plays at Colorado Christian on Tuesday before playing at UNC. unc notes Bears in NCAA Statistics: Entering last week, UNC ranked No. 1 in the country in three-point field goals made per game (9.7) for the fourth week in a row. In their reclassification process to Division I, UNC s stats are officially categorized as Division II for the four-year period. However, UNC not only tops the Division II stats (over second place West Liberty State at 9.5) but also top the current Division I leader Southwest Missouri State (8.8). Individually, Amber Elliott ranks 28th in three-pointers made per game (2.6) and 44th in three-point field goal percentage (39.8%). Freshman Heather Barbour, who will miss the rest of the season with injury, was ranked in both three-pointers made per game and percentage but has fallen out of the rankings because she has now not played in enough games to qualify. New statistical leaders will be released on Tuesday. UNC Limited to 38 Points Against TAMUCC: UNC scored only 38 points in its loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 31. That point total was the second lowest total in school history, trailing only the 34 points they scored in a loss at Regis on Feb. 20, Three-Pointers Attempted Record to Fall This Week: UNC enters this week having hit three-point attempts this season. UNC needs only 22 attempts this week (something they will probably get on Tuesday night) to break the school mark for three-pointers attempted in a season. The current record is 621 set by the team. UNC needs to make 28 more three-pointers to break the school record for three-pointers made in a season (221), also held by the team. Dillon Rebounding: Freshman Bailey Dillon grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in UNC s win over Utah Valley State on Jan. 27. That marked the second time this season she has had double-digit rebounding totals and five times this season she has led the UNC team in rebounding, second most on the team. Overall she is third on the team in rebounds, averaging 4.4 per game. The most amazing fact is that she is listed at only 5 5, but may be a tad bit shorter than that. Bears Register Second Division I Win: In its first year of reclassification to Division I, UNC won its second game against a D-I team, and improved to 2-0 against teams from the Beehive State this year with a win over Utah Valley State (Jan. 27), who is also a provisional D-I team this season. UNC s first win over a D-I came back on Dec. 13 at Utah State, in overtime. When UNC was a D-II team they did not schedule many games against D-I teams. You have to go all the way back to Jan. 21, 1989 when the Bears bested Portland State to find a win over a D-I team before this season. Earlier in that same season, the Bears also bested Division I Wyoming on Dec. 14, Overall UNC is 2-2 against D-I teams UNC Women s Basketball Game Notes 3

4 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball Barbour and Flavin Out: Freshman Heather Barbour, who started 11 of UNC s first 13 games this season, is currently sitting out with a foot injury and will miss the remainder of the season. Junior Kayla Flavin suffered a knee injury against Fort Hays State and will also miss the remainder of her junior season. Bears Better Shooting Percentages: In UNC s victory over Fort Hays State (Jan. 24), the Bears were able to snap out of a shooting slump that dated back to mid-december. Against FHSU, the Bears hit 43.9% from the field, marking only the second time in the past 10 games that the team had hit above 40% from the field (the other being a 45.6% clip against Adams State). The Bears also hit 83.3% from the free throw line, marking only the second time in the past nine contests they had hit better than 72% at the line. Ford Records Double-Double: In her first career start, redshirt freshman Nicole Ford made the most of her opportunity, recording career-highs in points (12), rebounds (13) and blocks (3) in UNC s win over Fort Hays State (Jan. 24). The double-double was also the first of Ford s career, as the Sioux Falls native hit on 4-6 shots and 4-4 free throws in the win. Forcing Turnovers: The Bears are 12-2 this season when committing fewer turnovers than their opponents and hold a +2.9 turnover margin over their opponents this year. Thirteen times this season (and in eight of their last 10 games) UNC has forced their opponents into 20 or more turnovers, including 31 turnovers by Utah Valley State (Jan. 27), 32 miscues against Adams State (Jan. 2) and 35 turnovers by Western State (Dec. 2). Low Shooting: In the team s lost to Regis on Jan. 14, the Bears shot only 28.1% from the field, their lowest output since shooting 25.4% against North Dakota on Feb. 27, 1999, a stretch of 129 games. UNC also lost that game in Butler-Hancock Hall. Who Needs the Two?: On Nov. 28 against Colorado Mines, UNC was firing up three-pointers at an unbelievable pace. The Bears hit a school-record 18 three-pointers (which was repeated later in the season) on 51 attempts in the victory. The 18 trifectas broke the previous record of 14 set against South Dakota State in Jan. of The 51 attempts shattered the previous school record of 35 set against Barry on Nov. of 1997 and was only one away from tying the NCAA Division II record for attempts in a game (52 by Clarion vs. Ashland University on Feb. 24, 1992). Although UNC is making the move to Division I, its stats will still count as D-II stats until the end of the four-year reclassification process. Double Digit 3 s: UNC has made 10 or more three-pointers in 9 of 20 games this season, lastly done against Utah Valley State on Jan. 27. Only once (vs. Hastings College) has UNC allowed an opponent to connect on 10 three-pointers in a game this year. Blowout City: Through 20 games this season, UNC has played only four games that ended up closer than 12 points. UNC holds a +5.7 scoring advantage over their opponents so far this season and have division I independent standings Overall (as of 2/1/04) W L Pct. 5 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball won games by margins of 39 and 42 this season. But the Bears win the close games when it counts, holding a 2-0 record in games decided by three points or less this year. 600: With a layup at the 18:12 mark of the second half against Adams State (Jan. 2), senior Amber Elliott reached the 600 point plateau of her career at UNC. The guard from Sugar City, Colo. scored 27 points in the game on 8-14 shooting and 8-11 from the free throw line during that game. Overtime: With a win over Mesa State on Dec. 20, UNC won its fourth game in a row in overtime. The Bears had played an overtime contest just a week earlier when they beat Utah State on Dec. 13. Prior to those games, UNC had not played on OT game since Jan. 2, 2003 that the Bears beat St. Cloud The last time UNC went to overtime and lost was on Jan. 3, 2000 when North Dakota State clipped the Bears in two overtimes. Although UNC led that game at halftime, Utah State took control late and led by eight points with just 2:56 to play in the game. But over the final 1:46 of regulation, Elliott scored 10 points including a layup with five seconds to play to force an extra period, in which the Bears came out victorious She outscored the Aggies 10-4 over the final two minutes and the only other Bear to score in that time period was Jena Fosdick, who hit 1-2 free throws. Dillon Almost Records Triple-Double: Although she only stands 5 5, freshman point guard Bailey Dillon comes up huge on the court. On Dec. 6 against New York Tech, Dillon almost recorded the second triple-double in school history. She grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds while dishing out a career-high nine assists and scoring a career-high eights points, almost reaching the triple-double in only 18 minutes of action. The only triple-double in school history was recorded by Jill Fadenrecht on Dec. 18, 2002 when she had 13 points, 11 rebounds and 12 blocks against Adams State. Holly Wins Battle, Cindy the War: When UNC and Adams State squared off on Jan. 2, sisters Holly and Cindy McCarroll were meeting on the hardwood for the second straight year. Cindy, a sophomore at UNC, and Holly, a senior at ASC, faced each other in Nov. of 2002 when Holly scored six points and Cindy failed to score in a UNC win. This time around, Holly once again outscored her younger sister, netting 12 points in 27 minutes compared to only five points for Cindy (who tied a career-high with seven rebounds in her third career start). But Cindy s team once again came out on top, winning The Century Mark: UNC hit the century mark for the 14th time in school history on Dec. 6 when the Bears scored 103 points in a win over New York Tech. UNC ran out to 61 points at the break before only scoring 42 in the second 20 minutes. The game marked the first time since the 2001 season that UNC had scored 100 points in a game; that year they scored 104 in a win over Metro State. Bears Hit School Record 18 Three-Pointers for Second Time This Season: After breaking a five-year old school record for threepointers in a game earlier this season against Colorado Mines (Nov. 28), UNC tied that record only five games later, knocking down 18 threepointers in a blowout victory over New York Tech (Dec. 6). 6 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball attempts. Thievery: The Christmas season is usually a time of giving, but not for the UNC Bears against Western State on Dec. 2 when the Bears broke a 25-year old school record by notching 25 steals. UNC had 18 steals alone in the first half before finally breaking the record with a Gail Gagne swipe with 2:17 remaining in the game. UNC forced WSC into 35 turnovers on the night on the way to the victory. Elliott and Flavin Make Chuck Stephens Classic All-Tournament Team: In a repeat of the last time they were at a tournament in Pueblo, UNC s Amber Elliott and Kayla Flavin were named to the All- Tournament team after leading UNC to a 2-0 record, this time at the Holiday Inn/Chuck Stephens Classic. Elliott averaged 19.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while Flavin managed 14.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in the Bears wins over Nebraska-Omaha and New York Tech. Flavin Toughs It Out: After taking a shot in the mouth against Nebraska-Omaha (Dec. 5), guard Kayla Flavin had to have three stitches following the game. But that did not prevent her from bringing her A game less than 24 hours later against New York Tech. Flavin, with stitches, scored 20 points on 6-10 shooting, including 4-7 from three-point land in 15 minutes of action. Last year, Flavin came back quickly after chipping a tooth in a game. Double-Double Times Three: One double-double in a game is nice. Twice and the coach is ecstatic. But the Bears did it one better on Nov. 22 against CSU-Pueblo, when three Bears players recorded double-doubles in the same game. Amber Elliott (27 pts., 10 rebs.), Heather Barbour (10 pts, 11 rebs.) and Danielle Hagen (10 pts., 10 rebs.) reaching double digits in points and rebounds. The feat was extra special considering two of the three players are just freshmen. 7 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball years, four times the mark was approached, only to see someone come up just a bit short. The last instance was on Nov. 20, 1998 versus Fort Hays State, when Kara Ketterer had 11 assists and 11 rebounds, Cathy Bowles had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Marianne Clark had 14 rebounds but only nine points. Elliott Named MVP of Colorado Christian Classic: Senior Amber Elliott was named MVP of the Colorado Christian Thanksgiving Classic after leading UNC to a 2-0 record at the event and averaging 17.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. She was joined on the alltournament team by freshman Heather Barbour, who averaged 13.0 points and hit six three-pointers in the first game of the classic. Elliott and Flavin Earn All-Tournament Honors: Senior Amber Elliott and junior Kayla Flavin were each named to the All-Tournament team at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic, hosted by CSU-Pueblo. Elliott averaged 24 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while Flavin averaged 15.5 points her contest including scoring a career-high 23 against the Thunderwolves. Youth Movement: Following the graduation of six players, UNC begins its Division I move with a roster full of underclassmen. Of the Bears 17 active players, nine of them are freshman and 10 in all are in their first season with the program. The roster features only one senior, Amber Elliott, and four juniors, two of whom are junior college transfers. The Bears are starting three freshman so far this season. Not Chicken, Not Pork, But Veal: UNC signed one player to a national letter of intent during the early signing period in November. Dani Veal (Sterling, Colo./Sterling H.S.) will join the team in the season. Veal, a 6 2 center, will also play volleyball at UNC. She was a high school teammate of current UNC point guard Bailey Dillon and the duo helped the Tigers to a pair of regional championships. Division I Schedule: In the Bears first season of reclassification to Division I, UNC will face five Division I teams this season. The schedule includes Air Force, Denver (exhibition), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American and Utah State. The Bears also have a homeand-home series with Utah Valley State, a fellow reclassified team who is also making the leap to Division I. Like Brother, Like Sister: Junior Carrie Frazier is in her first season with the Bears team after transferring from Mt. San Jacinto Junior College. But Frazier already knew somebody when she first got to campus... her brother Michael. Michael also attended Mt. San Jacinto Junior College and is in his first season as a shooting guard with the UNC men s basketball team. Bears Make Move to Division I: On May 10, 2002 the UNC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a move for the UNC intercollegiate athletics program to NCAA Division I. The sports year marked the last season for the Bears in the North Central Conference and the NCAA Division II level. This season the Bears begin a four-year reclassification period before officially becoming a Division I school in Over the next four years, UNC will be unable to compete in NCAA postseason competition. UNC will be competiting as an independent during the school year and will hopefully find conference affiliation before the end of the reclassification period. UNC Coaches Show: Catch Ron Vlasin and all the winter sports coaches on the UNC Coaches Radio Show every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The show is broadcast live from Barleycorn s (2385 W. 27th Street) and airs on KCOL 600-AM. KCOL s Corbu Stathes serves as host for the program. Bears Luncheon: Every Monday, join the UNC in-season coaches at Old Chicago (2349 W. 29th Street) for the weekly Bears Luncheon. You can hear all about the happenings in UNC athletics and get a great lunch for only $7. season superlatives Double-Doubles Heather Barbour... 1 Amber Elliott... 1 Nicole Ford... 1 Danielle Hagen... 1 Double-Figure Points Amber Elliott Heather Barbour... 8 Kayla Flavin... 8 Danielle Hagen... 5 Jena Fosdick... 4 Kendra Lambrecht... 3 Bailey Dillon... 2 Nicole Ford... 2 Cindy McCarroll Plus Scoring Games none 20-Plus Scoring Games Amber Elliott... 7 Kayla Flavin... 3 Heather Barbour... 1 Double-Figure Rebounds Danielle Hagen... 3 Bailey Dillon... 2 Heather Barbour... 1 Amber Elliott... 1 Nicole Ford... 1 Cindy McCarroll or More Assists Bailey Dillon... 6 Danielle Hagen... 4 Jena Fosdick... 2 Cindy McCarroll... 2 Heather Barbour or More Steals Cindy McCarroll... 3 Amber Elliott... 1 Top Scorer (ties included) Amber Elliott Heather Barbour... 3 Kayla Flavin... 3 Bailey Dillon... 2 Jena Fosdick... 2 Top Rebounder (ties included) Danielle Hagen... 6 Bailey Dillon... 5 Amber Elliott... 4 Cindy McCarroll... 4 Nicole Ford... 2 Heather Barbour... 1 Kayla Flavin... 1 Top Assister (ties included) Bailey Dillon Danielle Hagen... 4 Jena Fosdick... 3 Amber Elliott... 2 Heather Barbour... 1 Kayla Flavin... 1 Kendra Lambrecht... 1 Cindy McCarroll UNC Women s Basketball Game Notes 7
