2 Season Preview Bears Begin Move to Division I With Talented Group of Newcomers The cliché of new opportunities and beginnings may be often overused in the sports world. But the season may indeed be the beginning of a new era for the University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team. Gone are the program s all-time leading scorer and 12 other players from last season s squad that finished overall. Arriving are a group of talented newcomers who are just in time for the Division I era of Bears basketball. Head Coach Ron Vlasin begins his third season on the UNC bench and he does so as the Bears begin the first-year of a four-year reclassification period to Division I. The days of Division II and several storied North Central Conference rivals are over; new prospects and a slate of brand new opponents await the Bears this season. This season will be our first small steps into the Division I world, Vlasin said. We are not really playing a lot of Division I games this season (five in total) but it will give us a chance to see what Division I is like without going out every night and getting drilled by better opponents. Vlasin s first task will be to replace Missy Borell, the program s all-time Senior guard Amber Elliott is the Bears leading returner scorer, as she averaged 9.9 points during her junior campaign and tied a single-game record by hitting 7-7 three-pointers to begin a game. leading scorer, an honorable mention All-American, the program s leading scorer the last three seasons and a valuable defensive player in the paint. While replacing frontcourt stars like Borell and Jill Fadenrecht, the program s all-time leading shot blocker and games started leader, may be tough, the talent on this year s team may be better in the backcourt position which should be the strength of this year s squad. With losing Borell, we have to replace our offensive confidence, Vlasin said. Instead of just throwing her the ball and waiting for her to make something happen, this year s team will have multiple options who will step up and want to take the big shot at the end of the game. That depth and talent will start in the backcourt, a sometimes problem last season for the Bears. With no true point guard a season ago, Kristi Held was converted into that role and played admirably despite having a lack of experience, leading the conference in assists per game (4.9). This season true point guard experience will not be an issue. I think we should be able to play at a lot faster pace this season, Vlasin said. If we can get rebounds then we will look to push it and put the ball in the hole. Looking to take over the point guard role is true freshman Bailey Dillon who was a two-time all-state selection and led all of Colorado class 4A in assists per game last season (6.0). Dillon is also an excellent shooter that can drain the deep three-pointer. She will be joined at the point guard position by junior college transfer Erika Johnson and junior Linda LaMar. I think we will University of Northern have Colorado a lot more Women s Basketball are all shooting well in the preseason. confidence offensively this season, Vlasin said. We have players that have played the position before and know the demands of that role. The shooting guard position is also stacked as lone senior Amber Elliott returns for her final season in a Bears uniform. Elliott was second on the team in scoring last season (9.9 points per game) and was second on the team in three-pointers made (40) including tying a school record by hitting seven consecutive threepointers to start the game against eventual national champion South Dakota State. Amber is our lone senior and we expect her to step up into a leadership role this season for us, Vlasin said. She hit over 50 percent of her threepoint attempts the second half of last season and we need her to pick up where she left off. Joining Elliott in the backcourt will be junior Kayla Flavin who started 23 games last season and hit 17 three-pointers. Freshman Melanie Drangmeister, a second-team all-state selection in New Mexico last year, and Erin Robben, an all-state selection who holds the Colorado records for three-pointers in a game (11), season (96) and career (280), will add instant firepower to the offensive attack. The Bears are also loaded at the swing position, with players that are also interchangeable at the one or two spot, as a trio of newcomers will vie for playing time. Kendra Lambrecht was an all-state selection who led the state in steals per game last season (6.5/game) but can also stroke it from deep. Nebraska all-state choice Jena Fosdick, holds her state Class A record for three-pointers in a game (9) and will help extend opponent s defenses this season. Freshmen Stacey Belohlavek and Dana Berge and sophomore Tara Wright round out the backcourt, although all may be a redshirt candidates this season. I do not think I have ever had this many shooters on a single team, Vlasin said. We have six or seven excellent three-pointers shooters who

3 Season Preview Junior Kayla Flavin started 23 games during the season, averaged 6.7 points per game and knocked down 17 three-pointers for the Bears. I think our three-point attack gives us a chance to defeat teams that are bigger than us inside. The three-point shot can be a great equalizer but we want to make sure we do not live and die by the three-pointer. And when UNC is not firing shots from behind the arc, they will be sending it inside to a group of players eager to make an impression on Bears fans. At the four position, freshman Heather Barbour should see a lot of minutes right away. The Highlands Ranch native was an all-state selection last year while averaging almost 18 points per game while doing almost everything else on the court well, including putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the basket. Alongside Barbour will be sophomore Cindy McCarroll, also a heptathlete on the UNC track team, who brings experience and athleticism to the position. Sharing time at the four position will be junior college transfer Carrie Frazier, whose brother Michael is on the UNC men s basketball squad. Frazier is tall and can also step outside and hit the outside shot. Also at the four is sophomore Gail Gagne, who is coming off a redshirt season after having knee surgery and will be phased into the lineup slowly. A trio of six foot tall plus athletes will man the center position. Although the Bears will be tall inside they will be inexperienced, as none of the three have yet to play a game for the Bears. True freshman Danielle Hagen could step up as the replacement for Borell, as the Montana native has been impressive in preseason workouts. Hagen holds her school career rebounding record and is an intelligent player, as she was the valedictorian of her senior class. Although the other two centers have not yet played a game in a UNC uniform, they have been with the program for a year. Redshirt sophomore Lora Doe transferred to UNC last season but sat out with an injury, which is still nagging her entering the season. When she is 100 percent she will be the intimidator and defensive presence the Bears need inside. Redshirt freshman Nicole Ford sat out last season getting stronger and will also see a lot of minutes at the five spot. I think we will have a lot more scoring at the four and five positions this season, Vlasin said. Although we will not have that defensive intimidator immediately, I think someone will eventually be able to fill that void. The team will play against a Head Coach Ron Vlasin s Bears squad will feature 11 newcomers as UNC begins its move to Division I this season. 3 schedule that consists of five Division I opponents, including in-state foes Denver and Air Force. The Bears also play against Utah State, Texas A&M- Corpus Christi and Texas-Pan American. In addition, the Bears have a home-and-home series with Utah Valley State, a team that is also in the reclassification process. The remainder of the schedule mixes in several challenging Division II games and a pair of dates with two-time, defending NAIA champion Hastings College. It is really a mixed bag of games this season, Vlasin said. It is fairly tough off the bat which means our team will have to adjust right away. Not having a lot of home games (nine in total) is a drawback but if we play smart we can win on the road. Hopefully this schedule and mix of Division I games will get us ready for next season. We are going to be fun to watch, Vlasin added. I am really excited about this team. We have a lot of depth on the perimeter and I think a rotation of at least 10 will play nightly, although I would not be surprised to see all of our top 12 play.

4 4 Coaching Staff RON VLASIN, Head Coach Third Season at UNC Northern Colorado, 1967 Ron Vlasin is entering his third season as the head coach of the University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team in One of the most successful high school coaches ever in the state of Colorado, Vlasin will help lead the Bears program into its Division I era. 19 Review The final year of competition in the North Central Conference and at the Division II level for the University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team turned out to be a roller coaster ride that had many ups and downs. The Bears had both long winning and losing streaks on their way to a overall record. Along the way several individuals set season and career records and the Bears said goodbye to five seniors as the season came to an end in the NCC Wells Fargo Finals. The season started out with the Bears claiming a victory over Adams State to open the season and to begin a modest three-game winning streak to open the season. UNC next ran off victories over UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado Mines before dropping their first game of the year to Colorado Christian at the Colorado Christian Thanksgiving Classic, UNC would then host 13th ranked Mesa State, the first of 10 nationally-ranked opponents they would face throughout the season. The Bears led the Mavericks by 10 points midway through the second half and were still in the lead with four minutes to play when senior center Missy Borell fouled out. UNC would only score two more points the rest of the way and dropped their second consecutive game. In that contest, senior Lindy Kirkland did her best in an effort to help the Bears pull the upset, as she connected on seven three-pointers, tying the school record for trifectas in a game. The next night, Kirkland did one better, knocking down eight three-pointers to break the record in UNC s demolishing of Metro State. UNC would then drop a home game to Colorado Christian before running off three straight victories to improve to 7-3. UNC dropped its final game of 2002 to Southern Colorado at the Chuck Stephens Classic and headed into conference play with a 7-4 record. A favorable NCC schedule that had the Bears play their first four league games at home allowed UNC to start with a 2-1 record in conference play. UNC started the New Year with an victory over St. Cloud State, in the first overtime game of the Ron Vlasin era. And dropping a five-point heartbreaker to No. 4-ranked North Dakota State, the Bears responded with a thrashing of Nebraska-Omaha on a record setting night. On that night with a free throw at the 7:36 mark of the first half, Borell became UNC s all-time leading scorer with her 1,591th point to pass Trish Williamson for the all-time mark. Borell scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the milestone evening. UNC would struggle over the next month, defeating only Minnesota State in the next eight games and seeing their record drop to 8-12 as the season drew near a close. During that streak, senior forward Jill Fadenrecht also set a milestone, starting her 85th consecutive game on Jan. 11 to set a new school record for consecutive starts. After dropping five games in a row, the Bears responded by winning back-to-back games for the first time in two months, defeating Augustana and St. Cloud State (their lone road conference victory of the season) to position themselves for the NCC Wells Fargo Finals postseason tournament. UNC looked to be geared up to claim the fifth seed, the spot they were predicted to finish in a preseason poll of league coaches. But a Senior Day loss to North Dakota and road losses at Minnesota State and nationally ranked South Dakota State to close the regular season pushed the Bears into a tie with Nebraska-Omaha for fifth. Following a tiebreaker with UNO that came down to a coin flip, the Bears received the sixth seed for the Wells Fargo Finals (the third consecutive season they qualified for the tournament) and drew two-time defending conference champion North Dakota in the quarterfinals. In the season finale loss at South Dakota State, junior Amber Elliott had one of the best three-point shooting games in UNC history. The guard hit her first seven three-point attempts in the game to tie the school record for consecutive trifectas made. Elliott hit eight three-pointers in all, tying Kirkland s school record and finished the game with a career-high 32 points. In the Wells Fargo Finals, the nationally ranked Fighting Sioux proved to be too much for the Bears to handle, especially with the large home court advantage UND had at Hyslop Arena in frigid Grand Forks, N.D., as UNC s season ended with a loss. The season ending loss marked the end of the line for five Bears seniors, Borell, Fadenrecht, Crystal Hardy, Kristi Held and Kirkland. Borell finished her career as UNC s all-time leading scorer for a career (1,866), a season (555 points in ), and also the career leader in field goals made (682) and free throws made (469). She also ranked second all-time at UNC in rebounding (837) and blocked shots (157). She scored in double figures in all but two games in (and in 43 of her last 46 games) and set a career-high by scoring 34 points against North Dakota State on Feb. 1. She scored 20-plus points 38 times in her career, had 32 career double-doubles, was honored as NCC Player of the Week six times and started the last 83 games of her outstanding career. After the season, Borell was honored as an All-NCC selection and an All-Region selection for the third consecutive season and as an honorable mention All- American. She averaged 19.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game in , which ranked third and second respectively in the NCC. She also avearged 1.7 assists, 1.5 steals (15th in the NCC) and 1.4 blocks per game (4th in the NCC). Her 58.1% field goal percentage ranked her third in the NCC and in the Top 25 nationally. Fadenrecht started every game during and finished her career by starting 98 consecutive games, a school record. In her four-year career she started 106 overall games, also a UNC record. She is the Bears all-time leader in blocked shots for a career (210) and a season (79 in ) and ranks third in rebounds (807). She is also the only player in UNC history to ever record a triple-double. She led the league in blocked shots (2.50/game which ranked 12th nationally), ranked sixth in rebounds (7.2/game) and ninth in steals (1.75/game) and was named NCC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, becoming only the second NCC player ever to accomplish that feat. Kirkland ended her career with 111 three-pointers in just two seasons of competition at UNC. She hit 54 three-pointers during her junior campaign and 57 in In her first season as a collegiate point guard, Held led the NCC in assists, dishing out 137 helpers (4.9 average). She had a career-high 12 assists against Mesa The UNC women s basketball team qualified for the North Central Conference Tournament for the third season in a row last year. Missy Borell closed her fantastic career by becoming the program s all-time leading scorer and earning honorable mention All-American honors. 19 State in December and her 137 assists were 57 more than she had in her first three years combined. After failing to score in her junior season, Hardy scored a bucket each in UNC s first two games of the season, saw action in 25 games and recorded University of Northern 109 minutes Colorado of playing Women s time after Basketball only playing 22 minutes as a junior.
