THE BEAR FACTS The Bears are coming off a runner-up finish at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev. In the first game of the contest, the Bears outplayed the host Nevada Wolfpack in a win. Although Northern Colorado shot 35 percent in the first half and only led by four at the half, the Bears rebounded to to shoot 44 percent and outscore the Wolfpack in the second half. Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard led all scorers with a season-high 19 points, including 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Junior Jena Fosdick turned out a solid performance with 15 points and six rebounds. Northern Colorado had a tough time with the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the championship game of the tournament, as the Bears trailed at the half, In the second half, Gonzaga extended its lead to 23, but the Bears came back and cut the lead to on a lay up from junior Heather Barbour. But the Bulldogs physical presence proved to be too much for the Bears, as Gonzaga took the contest Fosdick was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament team. 3 GAME NOTES University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball MONKEY OFF THE BACK The Bears will try to beat the Cowgirls on Saturday for the first time since Dec. 14, 1989 when Northern Colorado won Wyoming has won the last four meetings, including last years contest. The Bears went into halftime trailing 26-25, but went cold in the second half, shooting just 19 percent. AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Bears are since against teams from the Mountain West. Northern Colorado went 0-6 against MWC teams last season. The Bears lost a close battle to Air Force in Colorado Springs in Northern Colorado s first game of the season. Air Force is 4-1 on the season. TURNING AWAY THE TURNOVERS After losing the turnover battle in their first five games this season, the Bears forced more turnovers than they committed against Nevada and Gonzaga. FRESH FIRST SEASON Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard is leading the team in points (14.3/game), steals (16), assists (19) and field goals made (37). The guard from Las Vegas has started every game this season. THE GREAT EQUALIZER The Bears have drained 67 3-pointers this season compared with their opponents, who have just 28. The pointers per game average smashed the team s average of 8.6 per game last season. Junior Jena Fosdick leads the team with 17 3-pointers. SECOND HALF TENACITY Although the Bears have been outscored in the first half of games this season, Northern Colorado has proved its toughness as the games go on, outscoring opponents in the second half. SEASON NOTES BEARS SIGN TWO TO LETTERS OF INTENT Head coach Ron Vlasin announced the early period signings of Tina Fox (North Platte, Neb./North Platte HS) and Kaley Hoover (Emory, Texas/Rains HS) on Nov. 17. Fox and Hoover will join Northern Colorado next season. Fox, a 6 3 center, averaged nine points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots per game during her junior season as she led her team to an 18-5 record. Fox will also compete in track & field at Northern Colorado. Hoover, a 6 2 forward, averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds per game as a junior. She has earned nine varsity letters in basketball, volleyball and track & field. Hoover was ranked 24th in the preseason by TexasHoops.com. 3-POINT EXCELLENCE Junior Jena Fosdick s total of five 3-pointers against Nevada and Gonzaga moved her up to eighth place on the Northern Colorado all-time 3-pointers made list with 94. Fosdick passed last year s leading scorer, Kayla Flavin, who had 92 career 3-pointers. BREAKING EVEN LEADS TO GOOD THINGS The last time the Bears started 1-1 was the season, when they finished WHACKING THE WAC The Bears will hope to continue their success against Western Athletic Conference teams, as they went 2-0 last season against UTEP and Utah State. Northern Colorado is 1-1 against the WAC this season with a win over Nevada and a loss to Boise State. 4 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball FOSDICK STARTS WHERE SHE LEFT OFF Junior guard Jena Fosdick scored 26 points and had a career-high eight rebounds in the win over Cal State-Fullerton after coming off an off-season head injury. Fosdick s five 3-pointers moved her to within six trifectas of ninth on the all-time Northern Colorado list. THE REBOUNDING MACHINE Junior center Danielle Hagen grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds against Cal State-Fullerton. It was the first time since 2002 that a Bear had grabbed at least 15 rebounds. NOT JUST BEGINNER S LUCK Freshman guard Jabrenta Hubbard followed up her performance against Air Force with 18 points, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range against the Titans. Hubbard also dished out five assists and had three steals. NO BACKING DOWN HERE Although Northern Colorado is still in its infant stages of being a Division I program, it is not shying away from tough competition. The Bears are taking on seven teams that participated in the NCAA or WNIT tournament last season. Those teams include Louisville (NCAA), Maryland (NCAA), Illinois (WNIT), Marquette (WNIT), Gonzaga (WNIT), and twice against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (WNIT). The Bears took Maryland to the wire last season, leading with 4:20 to play before falling BEARS TURN OUT BEST SHOOTING SINCE 2OO3 Northern Colorado s 51 percent shooting performance against Cal State- Fullerton on Nov. 20 was their best since Dec. 6, 2003, in a win over New York Tech. DANDY DEBUT Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard scored 17 points in her collegiate debut against Air Force on Nov. 18. The guard from Las Vegas was 7-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Hubbard was ranked the 38th-best high school player in the nation by NCAAFullCourt.com in 2004 and was a top-ranked player in the West region by Street & Smith s that same year. THE COMEBACK KID Junior Heather Barbour scored 11 points against Air Force. Barbour had been hampered by leg injuries the past two years. Before the game against the Falcons, she hadn t played in regular season action since Jan. 8, 2005, against Utah. RULE CHANGE Fans may notice a difference with the kicking rule this year. Before, the shot would reset to 30 seconds when the ball was kicked. The NCAA changed the rule to say the shot clock will reset to 15 seconds when there are less than 15 seconds left on the shot clock when the ball is kicked. When there are more than 15 seconds remaining on the shot clock, the time will stay the same. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH Northern Colorado is (.757) all-time against teams from Colorado. HOT STREAK The Bears went 9-3 in their last 12 games last season after starting out At the end of that stretch, Northern Colorado went 2-1 at the Division I Indepedent tournament in Orem, Utah, and finished as the runner up. BEARS WIN EXHIBITION The Bears took down Colorado Mines in an exhibition on Nov. 8. Although Northern Colorado shot just 24 percent in the first half, it rebounded in the second half to shoot 41 percent. The Bears played stellar defense, forcing 28 turnovers. GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION Newcomer Jabrenta Hubbard scored 12 points, dished out a game-high eight assists and grabbed five steals in her first game action in a Northern Colorado uniform. Hubbard averaged 20.3 points and 3.5 assists per game as a high school senior in Las Vegas. BEARS IN TOURNAMENT PLAY The Bears have a all-time record in tournament games. The Bears went 2-1 and finished as runner-up at last season s Division I Independent Tournament in Orem, Utah. Northern Colorado also finished as runner-up in the Wingate Classic and the Nugget Classic this season. NORTHERN COLORADO COACHES SHOW NOW ON WEDNESDAY Fans can now join Ron Vlasin and other Northern Colorado coaches at noon on Wednesdays at Old Chicago (2349 W. 29th St., next to Red Lobster). The show is open to the public and lunch is only $7, which includes a salad and drink. Troy Coverdale serves as the host, and the show airs at 7 p.m. that night on 1310-AM KFKA.

Northern Colorado defeated UTEP in El Paso, Texas last season. GREELEY, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team pulled out a win in an exhibition against the Colorado Mines Orediggers on Tuesday night at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. (Clune Arena) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team lost a nail biter to the Air Force Falcons at Clune Arena on Friday, Despite being out-rebounded 43-24, the Bears put themselves in position to win the game in the second half. Northern Colorado used the slick shooting of freshman Jabrenta Hubbard, junior Heather Barbour and junior Melanie Drangmeister in a 10-4 run to take a lead with 5:41 to go in the game. But the Bears could not overcome the inside and free throw shooting of Air Force, as the Falcons went on a 10-3 run to close out the game. Hubbard lit up the arena for a game-high 17 points on 7- of-12 shooting (3-4 from 3-point range) in her collegiate debut. Barbour chipped in with 11 points in her first official game action since coming off a leg injury from last season. Danielle Hagen also had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Bears (0-1) got a tough start to the game, shooting 1- for-4 and turning the ball over three times in the first four minutes. Air Force took its largest lead in the first half at with 7:21 left in the first half. The Bears cut the Falcons lead to after Drangmeister sunk a 3-pointer and sophomore Dani Veal laid it up. Air Force closed the half on a jumper from Alecia Steele and free throws from Jamie Davis to take a lead. Turnovers were abundant in the first half, as both teams had a combined 36 turnovers, with Northern Colorado committing 17 compared to Air Force s 19. The Bears shot 4-of-16 from beyond the arc in the half. Hubbard shot a perfect 4-for-4 in the first half, including 3-for-3 from the 3-point line. In the second half, Barbour got things rolling as her 3- pointer knotted the game at 39. From that point the game was neck-and-neck. After the Bears took the lead later in the half, it looked as if they had the momentum going their way, but a turnover by the Bears helped the Falcons fight back to tie it up at 57. Air Force took a lead with 18 seconds remaining, but the Bears refused to quit. Hubbard scored a quick two with nine seconds left to make it a two possession game, however the Bears could not find enough time for their comeback. GREELEY, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team blasted the Cal State-Fullerton Titans on Sunday at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. It was the largest win for Northern Colorado over a Division I school since Junior guard Jena Fosdick had a game-high 26 points (9- of-14 shooting) and eight rebounds, which ties her careerhigh. Junior forward Heather Barbour chipped in with a career-best 21 points. The Bears (1-1) shot 40 percent from 3-point range (13-32) and out-rebounded the Titans Northern Colorado shot 51 percent from the field, its best showing since Dec. 6, 2003 in a win over New York Tech. The Bears were a smaller team than the Titans, but on defense Northern Colorado shut down Fullerton s scoring in the post, holding CSF center Amber Pruitt to just nine points on 3-of-9 shooting. The only time the Titans led was in the first minute of the game, but a 14-0 run put the Bears up Fullerton cut the lead to with 13:41 remaining in the first half, but it could not keep pace with Northern Colorado as the Bears outscored the Titans to close out the half. GREELEY, Colo. - In what could be termed the biggest win in program history, the University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team upset the University of Illinois Fighting Illini on Wednesday night at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. In their first-ever game against a team from the Big Ten Conference, Northern Colorado (2-1) knocked down pointers on its way to an upset. The Bears hit 8-of-16 3-pointers in the first half in building a halftime advantage. Illinois (1-1) struggled from the field all night, hitting only 34.5 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from 3-point range. Cindy McCarroll matched her career-high for Northern Colorado with 14 points, hitting a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range including a bank shot trifecta from the corner. In the first half, the Illini jumped out to a 6-0 run. But the Bears soon clawed back and went on a 11-0 run. After that, Northern Colorado never trailed. Illinois got as close as with 8:47 left in the first half, but the Bears went on a 12-4 run to take a lead. Northern Colorado finished out the half with a lead. The Bears held the Illini to just 27 percent shooting (7-of-29) in the half, which included a 1-for-7 mark from 3-point range. (The Wingate Classic) BOZEMAN, Mont. - Jabrenta Hubbard scored a crucial lay up with 15 seconds left to give the Northern Colorado women s basketball team a three-point lead that drove the Bears to a upset over the Big East s Marquette Golden Eagles in the first game of the Wingate Classic. Northern Colorado s win was its second straight over a major Division I team and its third this season over a Division I opponent. The Bears tallied a total three wins over Division I schools in its previous two seasons, which were Northern Colorado s first two seasons as a Division I school. The Bears (3-1) trailed by at halftime, but Northern Colorado clamped down on defense and heated up from beyond the arc to outscore Marquette in the second half. The Bears, who normally rely on the 3-point shot, were cold in the first half, going just 1-of-16 from long range. But Northern Colorado struck a match in the second half and went 6-of-14 from 3-point land. We came together as a team in the second half and put something great together, said head coach Ron Vlasin. On the ensuing possession, the Golden Eagles missed two straight shots and a free throw that gave the Bears the ball with 44 seconds left. (The Wingate Classic) BOZEMAN, Mont. - The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team fell short against the Boise State Broncos in a hard-fought loss on Saturday in the championship game of the Wingate Classic. It was Northern Colorado s fifth game in eight days. Our kids have played their hearts out these past five games, said head coach Ron Vlasin. We made a couple of execution errors, and Boise State took advantage and played well. The Bears (3-2) had trouble with BSU s defense, as the Broncos scored 30 points off 23 Northern Colorado turnovers. Junior Danielle Hagen recorded her third career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard led the Bears in scoring with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and dished out six assists. Northern Colorado jumped out to a lead nearly seven minutes into the game, but Boise State went on a 17-0 run to take a lead with 7:14 left in the first half. The Bears came back before the end of the half to cut the Broncos lead to at halftime. Both teams couldn t seem to get into a scoring groove in the half, as Northern Colorado shot 33 percent while BSU went 30 percent from the field. Boise State (4-0) went on a 5-0 run to begin the half, but Northern Colorado soon clawed back as Hubbard drained a 3-pointer to pull to within seven (38-31) with 15:08 remaining in the game. The Broncos then went on a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 51-35, but the Bears did not give up as they went on their own 10-1 run to cut BSU s lead to with 10:12 left to play. But Northern Colorado s tank ran empty as Boise State outscored the Bears the rest of the game. Hagen s 17 points and 20 rebounds in Northern Colorado s two games at the Wingate Classic earned her a spot on the all-tournament team. (The Nugget Classic) RENO, Nev. - The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team held the Nevada Wolfpack to just 37 percent shooting en route to a win on Friday at the Nugget Classic. Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard went 5-of-10 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line to score a season-best 19 points to lead all scorers. Junior Jena Fosdick chipped in with 15 points (3-of-6 from 3-point range) and a team-high six rebounds. The Bears (4-2) are off to their best start since playing a full Division I schedule. Northern Colorado s four wins have all come against full Division I teams; in the program s first two season s of the reclassification to Division I, the Bears racked up a total of three full Division I wins. Northern Colorado got off to a rough start in the game, falling prey to the Wolfpack s opening 8-0 run. But the Bears clawed back and went on an 18-4 run to take an lead with 11:35 left in the first half. A 3-pointer by senior Molly McGrath with 6:47 left in the half put the Bears up 23-16, but Nevada stormed back with a 6-0 run to pull to within one point of the lead at Northern Colorado ran right back with a 6-0 run, capped off by a trifecta by freshman Alisa Christopherson. However, Nevada s Traci Graham made a 3-pointer as time expired to cut the Bears halftime lead to At the start of the second half, neither team could pull away. Nevada (0-5) took its first lead since the first half at with 12:12 left to play. But from there, the Bears roar proved to be too much for the Wolfpack. Northern Colorado forced four Nevada turnovers and went up by as many as 18 points before settling on the final score. The Bears improved their first half mark of 35 percent shooting to 44 percent in the second half. Northern Colorado held Nevada to just 32 percent from the field in the second half, including just 1-of-9 from 3-point range (2-of-15 for the game). Gonzaga countered with 49 percent shooting, and the Bears were not able to get within single digits of the Bulldogs lead the entire game. 15 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball Making The Transition NORTHERN COLORADO TO JOIN BIG SKY CONFERENCE The presidents of the eight Big Sky Conference institutions voted on May 17, 2005, to add the University of Northern Colorado as the league's ninth member. The University of Northern Colorado will officially join the Big Sky Conference on July 1, 2006, and begin athletic competition in August of The Big Sky will be comprised of Northern Colorado, Eastern Washington University, Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State University, Northern Arizona University, Portland State University, Sacramento State University and Weber State University. "In Northern Colorado, we've found an institution that fits the footprint of the Big Sky Conference,'' said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. "Northern Colorado is very similar to the other schools in our conference. It is a school with a great academic and athletic tradition, and fits both geographically and academically. "Northern Colorado is committed to the Big Sky and we've already developed a great partnership Our presidents were very impressed with Northern Colorado from the beginning of this process, and are excited about the future of our league with the addition.'' "We're thrilled to join a conference in our region that is not only firstrate in athletics, but also made up of stellar academic institutions," UNC President Kay Norton said. As part of its agreement for membership in the Big Sky, Northern Colorado will add men's and women's indoor track and field, as well as men's cross country. UNC has also agreed to fund 63 football scholarships by the 2007 season. Northern Colorado will compete in a full regular-season Big Sky schedule in UNC will face certain restrictions competing in Big Sky Championships where an automatic bid to an NCAA tournament is at stake until it is fully eligible to accept an automatic berth. "The competition level in the conference is high, but we feel our program is in a good position to be competitive right away," Northern Colorado Director of Athletics Jay S. Hinrichs said. "Our goal is to compete for conference championships in the near future." In December 2004, the Big Sky institution presidents decided to take a closer look at adding Northern Colorado. A team of Big Sky representatives visited the Greeley campus in early February, and completed a site visitation report that was presented to the presidents. The Big Sky is expanding for the first time since the summer of 1996 when Sacramento State, Portland State and Cal State Northridge were added after Boise State and the University of Idaho left the conference. Northridge joined the Big West following the season. The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members: Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. The Big Sky currently sponsors championships in 13 sports: Football, men's and women's basketball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, women's soccer, women's golf and women's volleyball. Northern Colorado is in its third year of a four year reclassification process to Division I. TIMELINE OF TRANSITION TO DIVISION I Third Year Attendance at the NCAA convention by institutional staff. Attendance at NCAA meeting to discuss issues impacting Division I members. Completion of an NCAA athletics certification orientation visit.
