4 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball DANDY DEBUT Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard scored 17 points in her collegiate debut against Air Force on Nov. 18. The guard from Las Vegas was 7-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Hubbard was ranked the 38th-best high school player in the nation by NCAAFullCourt.com in 2004 and was a top-ranked player in the West region by Street & Smith s that same year. THE COMEBACK KID Junior Heather Barbour scored 11 points against Air Force. Barbour had been hampered by leg injuries the past two years. Before the game against the Falcons, she hadn t played in regular season action since Jan. 8, 2005, against Utah. RULE CHANGE Fans may notice a difference with the kicking rule this year. Before, the shot would reset to 30 seconds when the ball was kicked. The NCAA changed the rule to say the shot clock will reset to 15 seconds when there are less than 15 seconds left on the shot clock when the ball is kicked. When there are more than 15 seconds remaining on the shot clock, the time will stay the same. TRIFECTARIFIC The Bears pointers per game last season would have tied for fourth-best in the nation, but because of the reclassification, they are not part of official Division I statistical categories until the transition is over. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH Northern Colorado is (.757) all-time against teams from Colorado. HOT STREAK The Bears went 9-3 in their last 12 games last season after starting out At the end of that stretch, Northern Colorado went 2-1 at the Division I Indepedent tournament in Orem, Utah, and finished as the runner up. AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Bears are since against teams from the Mountain West. Northern Colorado went 0-6 against MWC teams last season. (Clune Arena) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team lost a nail biter to the Air Force Falcons at Clune Arena on Friday, Despite being out-rebounded 43-24, the Bears put themselves in position to win the game in the second half. Northern Colorado used the slick shooting of freshman Jabrenta Hubbard, junior Heather Barbour and junior Melanie Drangmeister in a 10-4 run to take a lead with 5:41 to go in the game. But the Bears could not overcome the inside and free throw shooting of Air Force, as the Falcons went on a 10-3 run to close out the game. Hubbard lit up the arena for a game-high 17 points on 7- of-12 shooting (3-4 from 3-point range) in her collegiate debut. Barbour chipped in with 11 points in her first official game action since coming off a leg injury from last season. Danielle Hagen also had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Bears (0-1) got a tough start to the game, shooting 1- for-4 and turning the ball over three times in the first four minutes. Air Force took its largest lead in the first half at with 7:21 left in the first half. The Bears cut the Falcons lead to after Drangmeister sunk a 3-pointer and sophomore Dani Veal laid it up. Air Force closed the half on a jumper from Alecia Steele and free throws from Jamie Davis to take a lead. Turnovers were abundant in the first half, as both teams had a combined 36 turnovers, with Northern Colorado committing 17 compared to Air Force s 19. The Bears shot 4-of-16 from beyond the arc in the half. Hubbard shot a perfect 4-for-4 in the first half, including 3-for-3 from the 3-point line. In the second half, Barbour got things rolling as her 3- pointer knotted the game at 39. From that point the game was neck-and-neck. After the Bears took the lead later in the half, it looked as if they had the momentum going their way, but a turnover by the Bears helped the Falcons fight back to tie it up at 57. Air Force took a lead with 18 seconds remaining, but the Bears refused to quit. Hubbard scored a quick two with nine seconds left to make it a two possession game, however the Bears could not find enough time for their comeback. Northern Colorado shot 47 percent in the second half, which topped Air Force s 28 percent. But Air Force was able to win the free throw battle, going from the line, compared with Northern Colorado s Official Basketball Box Score -- GAME TOTALS -- FINAL STATISTICS Northern Colorado vs Air Force 11/18/05 7:00 p.m. at Clune Arena (USAFA, Colo.)
