4 The University... Bowling Green State University is an integral part of the system of higher education maintained by the State of Ohio. It is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor and is supported almost entirely by legislative appropriations. A 9 General Assembly act authorized an appointed commission to seek a site m northwestern Ohio for a new normal school. Bowling Green was selected and trustees were appointed in 9 with the first president elected in 92. The college known as Bowling Green Normal College opened in temporary quarters in September 94, and one year later moved into two new buildings on the present campus. In 929 the General Assembly changed the name to Bowling Green State College. The present name was authorized by the 935 Assembly. The university is composed of four main divisions: College of Education College of Liberal Arts, College of Business Administration and the Graduate School. Courses are offered in forty-three different departments, and the school is recognized by most accrediting agencies., Tn. e. university is located on a tract of 24 acres in the northeastern part of Bowling Green. Fifty campus buildings are available this year. The sesond unit of the heating plant, a chapel, an addition to the library and another women's cottage-type residence are now under construction. 5 The Coach... Robert H. (Bob) Whittaker is one of Ohio's most successful football coaches both as a scholastic and collegiate mentor. Whittaker is beginning his twentysecond year as a coach with the start of the 95 season. Twenty-one of these years he has served as a head coach, only in his first year in the profession did he work as an assistant. Coming out of college in 929, Bob signed to aid Jim Nicholson in football and track at Sandusky, Ohio high school. Nicholson left the next year for University of Toledo and the young Miami star took over and started his climb up football's ladder of success by quickly raising the Blue Streaks to a gridiron power. From 932 to 936 the Streaks won 38 consecutive games five more than amassed at Massillon by the popular Paul Brown. The 93, 933, 934," 935 and 938 teams were undefeated. He developed such later Ohio State stars as Charles Maag, Edward Bruckner and Leonard Thorn. His -year record as the Streaks' head man reads 87 victories, 2 defeats and 2 ties. Meanwhile, Frank J. Prout, the progressive Sandusky superintendent of schools, moved to Bowling Green as president. In 94 a reorganization in the Bob Whittaker athletic department called for a new head football coach. Whittaker was induced to leave the fine Sandusky setup and take over the Falcons. In his initial season, the Falcons chalked up one of the best records in the state with seven victories against one defeat and a tie. At the end of the season Whittaker was nominated as an Ohio candidate for the "coach of the year" award. During the next four war years Bob kept football alive in BG, piecing together teams composed of Navy V-2 men and civilians but always managed a winning season. In the four post war seasons to date Whittaker has continued his winning ways. In 948 the Falcons were undefeated. A 3-all tie with John Carroll was the only mar on the slate. Last year was Whittaker's first losing season at BG with four wins in nine tries. Whittaker's 9-year coaching mark at BG reads 49 wins, 25 losses and 4 ties for an overall coaching mark of 36 victories, 45 losses and 6 ties for a respectable.743 average. Born in Greenville, Ohio, Bob attended high school at Lorain and Norwalk, taking part in four years of football. At Miami University he played halfback where his teammate was Paul Brown, the Cleveland Browns' coach and general manager. Whittaker also took part in track at the Oxford school, running the dashes and throwing the javelin to a college record. He was graduated from Miami with a degree of bachelor of science in education. Bob took graduate work at Ohio State but received his master of Arts from Bowling Green in 942.

SYSTEM GROUND ATTACK AERIAL ATTACK KICKING GAME KICKOFFS POINTS AFTER Bob Whittaker's T-formation The running attack, featuring quick opening line plays and off tackle smashes, will be led by veteran Mel Augenstein, the only regular returning ball carrier. Junior Richard Pont and Bob Gwin will supply the speed for end sweeps. Norb Cowan will be another power runner along with sophomore Fred Durig and Stan Gilliland. Rex Simonds will be BG's chief flinger with the two Normans Rousey and Decker as capable understudies. On the receiving end will be big Gene Aldridge, 6-4 Phil White and Doug Mooney. The punting chore probably will fall to Simonds and Rousey. Cowan also shows some knack for booting as does reserve halfback Nick Nicholas. This important work will undoubtedly fall to Hal Dunham, who in 948 averaged 52 yards per kick in 47 tries. Ollie Glass will be in reserve for the task. Dunham probably will hold forth at this job also since none of last year's converters returned.

9 Prospects For '5... Bob Whittaker starts his th season at BG faced with many uncertainties. True there are 8 lettermen returning and a host of other varsity reserves. But most of these lettermen won their awards with a minimum of playing time so that experience will be lacking early in the season with tackle Gordon Ackerman, guard Leroy Silvani and fullback Mel Augenstein, the regulars from '49. Whittaker must find a ball carrier and linebacker who can produce a shade of the results of all-ohio Jack Woodland. Also in need is a pair of offense ends like 6-4 Bob Schnelker and Don Frail. Tackles Ed Kuntz and Don Verduin will be sorely missed as will center Bill Secor and guard Bud Schie. Along with Woodland in the backfield the losses include Rod Lash and Pete Schmidt. The BG success in '5 is to a large extent going to depend on the 6-man sophomore crop. Some of these first year men must make the grade as regulars. Paul Schieg, captain of the '49 frosh, falls in line for the left tackle job and may be called upon for both offense and defense. Al Dyckes and Louis Popek are two other sophomores who should come to supply some reserve strength at this position. In the backfield the progress of Bob Gwin at left half and Fred Durig at full will be closely watched. They may supply the needed forces here to make the BG ball carrying department even better than last year. Rex Simonds will be the field general, passer, punter and general leader and from all indications will do a first class job. A veteran squad member, Norm Rousey, and Norm Decker, a sophomore, will be in reserve. Norb Cowan may step in at left half with Gwin working into the picture before too many games have passed. Veteran Mel Augenstein probably will shift between halfback and fullback. Richie Pont looks like the man to help Gwin supply the BG speed and elusive running. Cowan, Augenstein and Durig will be the power runners. Sophomore Phil White may come as a replacement for Schnelker at end as another good 6-4 target for Simonds. But until he does get the experience, the BG pass receiving game lies with Gen Aldridge, a converted center, Doug Mooney and Hal Dunham. Defensively the situation looks good at end with Frank Bonfigho aided by Mooney and Dunham. Veteran Gordon Ackerman should handle the right tackle but the reserve strength is lacking. Jim Lewis, a letterman in 942 and 945, may provide this spot with some defensive strength. The guard situation is the most critical in the line. Leroy Silvani has the right guard spot in good shape but the reserve and defensive men must come from untested sophomores Sheldon Lifshitz and Charles Bronz. Big 27 pound i.ai- Robbins could provide the defensive answer. Fred Waugh and Jack Momany must handle the left guard with reserves lacking. Overall the Falcons should have more speed and deception than last year. Ine attack will probably turn more to the ground forces instead of the air as in the past two years. More speed among the backs should help the pass defense which has been miserably poor for the last four years, and the other defensive alignment might measure up to last year if the sophomores develop soon enough. 32 The Athletic Program... Football is one of nine sports in which Bowling Green teams participate on an intercollegiate level. The basketball team is annually one of the top aggregations in the nation. Under the direction of Harold Anderson, the quintet, playing a 3-game rugged schedule which took them from New York to San Francisco and Los Angeles, won 9 games against setbacks. The 95-5 five made a one month tour of Brazil in August and will get this year's 27-game slate underway on December 2, with six lettermen on tap. The swimming team, coached by Sam Cooper, has won the all-ohio college invitational relays for the past four years while building an outstanding dual meet record. This season Cooper should have another fine squad, overflowing with lettermen, to take on Michigan, Cincinnati, Michigan State and Iowa State. Graduate assistant Anthony Bonito will take over the wrestling squad after being one of BG's top notch wrestlers for the past three years. Kent, Waynesburg, Case, Edinboro and Western Reserve will be among the foes. Dave Matthews handles the track and cross country squads. Last year the harriers dropped only two meets in nine starts and the former Michigan track star expects another good season with a veteran lineup to put against Wayne, Michigan Normal, Michigan and in the National Collegiates. Besides track, baseball, golf and tennis appear on the spring program. Warren Steller handles the baseball team which competes against Michigan Normal, Toledo, Wayne and Kent State. Matthews is busy building up a fine track team and again will sponsor the Bowling Green Relays. The golf squad had the best record of all the sports last season with only one loss and two ties in 2 matches. A veteran squad will return next spring. Vernon Lerch's tennis squad found Wayne, Toledo, Detroit and Dayton pretty rough competition as they won four of 3 matches. The win and loss record of all sports during the school year follows: W L T Pet. Football Cross Country Basketball Swimming Wrestling Baseball Track Golf Tennis Total
