San Diego State Storyline San Diego State (10-7, 2-2 MWC) came away with a split in its first Mountain West Conference road trip of the season last week, slipping past Air Force, 50-49, before falling to New Mexico, 86-66, in The Pit. The loss to New Mexico snapped a three-game road winning streak for SDSU, which is 5-5 away from Cox Arena this season. SDSU and UNLV split its two meetings last year with each team winning at home. In addition to their six-game improvement during the pre-conference season, the are off to a noticeably improved start in league play at 2-2. Last year, SDSU opened its conference season 0-4 before getting its first MWC win versus UNLV in game No. 5. With 10 wins on the season San Diego State has already eclipsed its win total for all of when the finished 9-19 (4-10 MWC). SDSU s 10 victories also equal the most ever in a single season under Barb Smith. San Diego State s win at Air Force last Thursday was the fifth away from Cox Arena for the season, more than the last two years combined (four). The enter Saturday s match up with UNLV at 5-2 in Cox Arena this season. San Diego State had won four in a row on campus before falling to Utah, Jan. 13. The have a pair of players averaging double figures in scoring, junior Tanisha Knight (11.2 ppg) and sophomore Jamey Cox (10.3 ppg). Knight is also SDSU s leader in rebounding at 5.3 rpg, while Cox has paced the in assists (4.1 apg). About UNLV UNLV, San Diego State s travel partner, enters the week at 12-4 (2-2 MWC) after splitting at New Mexico and Air Force last weekend. The Lady Rebels opened the trip with a loss versus UNM before rebounding with a victory over the Falcons. UNLV got off to one of the Mountain West s hottest starts, winning 10-of-12 during pre-conference action. The Lady Rebels have three players averaging double figures in points, including junior Linda Fröelich, who leads UNLV in both scoring (18.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg). In fact, Fröelich s 18.1 ppg scoring average ranks No. 1 in the MWC. Sophomore Constance Jinks (13.2 ppg) and freshman Petra Gläser (11.1 ppg) also average double digits. UNLV averages 68.8 points per game as a team and leads the MWC in field goal percentage at 45 percent. San Diego State is the league s No. 2 shooting team (.443). Head coach Regina Miller is in her third year at UNLV. She owns an overall coaching record of , however she is with the Lady Rebels. San Diego State-UNLV Series Shorts Saturday s game versus UNLV will be the 21st between the and Lady Rebels. San Diego State leads the all-time series 11-9, including seven wins in the 10 games played in San Diego. Last year, SDSU won the first game between the two teams in Cox Arena, Recapping Last Year s Meetings Shannon Lee scored a career-high 17 points, including the game-winning lay-up with just 29 seconds to play, to lift San Diego State to a victory in the first meeting between the two schools at Cox Arena. SDSU, which scored 19 of the game's first 21 points, led by as many as 19 in the first half before withstanding a furious UNLV comeback bid down the stretch. The Lady Rebels outrebounded SDSU by a margin, but managed to shoot just 39 percent from the field, including 0-for-17 from beyond the arc. UNLV also connected on just 2-of-13 free throws. UNLV and San Diego State recycled the script from the first meeting between the two squads as once again the home team ran out to a huge lead only to have the visitors rally before falling just short at the tape. Jamey Cox poured in a team-high 16 points to lead three in double figures, but it wasn't enough to get SDSU over the hump in a loss to the Lady Rebels at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV s Linda Fröhlich led all scorers with 28 points, and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. San Diego State trailed by as many as 21 points midway through the second half before going on a 22-2 run to close the game to with 3:55 to play. However, the were never able to take the lead, as the Lady Rebels capped the wire-to-wire victory by outscoring SDSU 10-5 down the stretch. Common Enemies San Diego State and UNLV did not face a common opponent during the pre-conference season. Both teams defeated BYU at home and lost to Utah before falling at New Mexico and winning at Air Force.
3 Noting SDSU s at New Mexico San Diego State lost for the first time away from Cox Arena since Dec. 6, ending a three-game road winning streak with an loss at New Mexico. The trailed at the break for the third time in the last four games, but for the first time in those three games were unable to comeback for a win. The 20-points loss was SDSU s biggest since falling by 20 at Missouri. UNM s 86 points were also the second-most given up by the this season. San Diego State s 22 rebounds were its fewest of the season, while its 27 fouls tied a season-high. New Mexico shot 40 free throws, the second-most by an Aztec opponent this season, compared to just 20 by SDSU marking the biggest free throw deficit of the year. Sophomore Jamey Cox finished with 17 points, seven assists and tied a career high with five steals. She has now scored in double figures in seven of her last eight games. Senior Sophia Sledge added 12 points off the bench, her second highest point total of the season. She also collected a co-team-high five rebounds, a season best. Junior Tanisha Knight s nine points versus the Lobos was her highest scoring output in the last six games. Knight finished in double figures in 11 straight games to open the season. Win Total Equal To Best Under Smith With 10 wins so far this season, San Diego State has already exceeded its win total for all of when the finished the year 9-19 (4-10 MWC). At 10-6 (2-1 MWC) San Diego State has also equaled its highest single-season win total of the Barb Smith era. SDSU finished Smith s inaugural season season at Road Warrior Tradition Returning To Montezuma Mesa San Diego State won its fifth game away from campus last week at Air Force. The victory moved SDSU to 5-4 on the road this year, including a win over Alcorn State at the Unilever Lady Tiger Classic, before SDSU s loss at New Mexico evened the road record at 5-5. Through 17 games, the have already posted more wins away from Cox Arena this season (five) than they did in each of the last two years combined. It is also the first time San Diego State has won four pre-conference games away from campus since the season when the went 4-2. San Diego State has not won five or more games away from campus since winning 12 during the season. Home Cookin Not So Bad Though In addition to its improvement on the road, San Diego State has also performed better at home this season, posting a 5-2 mark in Cox Arena, including a split in its first Mountain Did You Know? San Diego State boasts one of the nation s most improved RPI rankings. Coming off a split with Air Force and New Mexico on the road last week, the entered the week with an RPI ranking of 140 a jump of 89 spots over last season. SDSU closed out the campaign as the nation s 229th-ranked team, according to Collegerpi.com. A Win Saturday Would... Improve San Diego State to 11-7 (3-2 MWC) on the season and 6-2 at home. Give SDSU 11 wins on the year, its most in a single season under head coach Barb Smith. Get San Diego State off to its best conference start under Smith. Put SDSU four games over.500 for the third time this season. Be San Diego State s third win in a row over UNLV at home. Improve SDSU to 12-9 all time versus UNLV, 8-3 at home. West Conference homestand of the year. Last year, the were 7-7 at home, including a 3-4 mark in league games. Learning To Win The Close Ones Barb Smith pointed to it at the beginning of the season as a key to the campaign. After wining just 5-of-15 games decided by 10 points or less last season, SDSU appears to be learning how to win the close ones this year. The won another close one last week at Air Force and are now 6-4 in games decided by 10 or fewer points on the year, including victories in six of the last eight. Head Coach Barb Smith Armed with a new contract, SDSU head coach Barb Smith is in her fourth season on Montezuma Mesa and owns a career record of (.375). Prior to taking over as SDSU's fifth head coach in 1997, Smith spent nine years as the top assistant at Colorado. During her tenure at CU, the Buffaloes won an average of 24 games per season, five Big 8 Conference championships and made eight NCAA Tournament appearances. She is a 1986 graduate of Ohio State, where she was a fouryear starter at point guard and led the Buckeyes to three NCAA berths. The victory at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi completed a six-game turnaround over last year s non-conference finish, despite playing eight on the road. Last year, SDSU played eight of its 13 pre-conference games in Cox Arena. Defense Hits Bump In The Road At New Mexico Entering Saturday s game an New Mexico, San Diego State had been one of the Mountain West s best defensive teams over the last eight games. Prior to giving up 86 points and allowing the Lobos to connect on 49 percent from the floor, the had held nine of their previous 12 opponents below 60 points. During that span, SDSU opponents shot just 36.0 percent (131-of-364) from the floor, including a 27.4 percent (29-of-106) from three-point distance. The are 10-2 on the year when holding an opponent under 65 points. More on SDSU s Defense San Diego State has yet to allow an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent this season, though both Missouri (.492) and New Mexico (.491) came close. In fact, the have held 10 of their last 12 opponents to 39-percent shooting or less. Cal Poly became the third SDSU foe this season to shoot less than 30 percent from the field on Jan. 2. Earlier this year, the held both Alcorn State and Cal State Fullerton below 30 percent shooting from the floor. Heating Up, Staying Hot... San Diego State enters Saturday s game versus UNLV as the Mountain West Conference s second best shooting team at 44.3 percent. The have been slightly better over the last six games, however, connecting at 45.6 percent of their shots. SDSU s shooting percentage is up significantly over last season when the connected on just 40.4 percent of their shots. SDSU has shot 50 percent or better in nine halves and over 44 percent in 9-of-17 games, including shooting over 60 percent in both halves versus Illinois State, to finish at 68 percent (32-of-47). That performance broke a 13-year-old school record, eclipsing the old mark of 65 percent (34-of-50) set on Jan. 19, 1987, versus Hawaii. 5 ...And That Translates Into More Points SDSU is also scoring nearly six more points per game than it did a year ago and has already surpassed the 80-point plateau twice. Last season, the never scored more than 80 points. Hard To Get The Three... Through 17 games, San Diego State has proven itself to be one of the toughest team in the Mountain West Conference to sink a three-pointer against. Heading into Saturday s game versus UNLV, Aztec opponents are shooting just 30.6 percent from beyond the arc and, in the last nine games, have connected on only 35 of their last 137 attempts (25.5 percent). SDSU has held three opponents San Jose State, Cal State Fullerton and California without a three-point basket. Last year against UNLV at home, SDSU held the Lady Rebels without a three on 17 tries....but Not For Air Force In Clune Arena After watch Air Force connect on 9-of-22 (.409) threes last year in Colorado Springs, the Falcons were back at it last Thursday night, hitting on 9-of-17 (.529) attempts from beyond the arc, including a blistering 7-of-9 (.778) in the first half. It is the best threepoints performance of the season by an Aztec opponent. Things returned to normal in The Pit as New Mexico sank just 6-of-20 attempts (30 percent). Five-Finger Discounts One of San Diego State s most amazing turnarounds this season has been in the steals category. Through 17 games, the rank second in the Mountain West Conference in steals per game at SDSU picked off 10 against Cal and a season-high 18 versus Cal State Fullerton its most since snatching 22 against Fresno State on Feb. 24, 1999 and now has notched double-digit steals in six games on the year. Last season, SDSU averaged just 8.5 spg, good for seventh in the eight-team league, and finished with double-figures in steals in only 10-of-28 games. A pair of entered the week ranked among the Mountain West s leaders in steals per game: Tanisha Knight (8th), Shannon Lee (9th) and Jamey Cox (10th). Turnovers Still The Key After struggling in the turnover department much of last season, SDSU has cut its turnovers in excess of three per game in and have had fewer turnovers than their opponents in 10-of-17 contests. The averaged 22.5 turnovers per game last year and enter Saturday s game averaging The have already posted eight games with 18 or fewer turnovers, including a season-low 12 at Portland State SDSU s fewest turnovers since committing just eight versus Pepperdine on Dec. 7, However, the key stat remains which team has the fewest miscues. SDSU is 8-2 when it has less turnovers than its opponent and just 2-4 with more miscues. Who Needs Rebounds Anyways San Diego State was outrebounded for the 10th time this season at Air Force and 11th tim on the year at New Mexico yet still managed to come away with a split in its most recent road trip. However, that s not unusual for the, who are 7-4 with fewer rebounds than their opponents and just 3-3 when outboarding a foe. Cox Eclipses 500 Sophomore Jamey Cox surpassed the 500-point plateau last week with her 11-point effort versus Brigham Young. It was the 41st game of her Aztec career. She is on pace to become SDSU s first 1,000-point scorer since Jodi Nowlin-Tres in 1997 and could reach the mark as early as the end of next season. Don t Forget About Bundage Senior Anita Bundage also eclipsed a significant plateau recently, becoming just the 11th Aztec to gather 500 or more rebounds in a career with five at New Mexico last week. Bundage enters the UNLV game with 502 career boards and needs just 33 more to crack SDSU s top 10 in career rebounding. Bundage Also On A Roll From The Floor Anita Bundage leads SDSU in field goal percentage, connecting on nearly 60 percent of her shots this season, including 75 percent from beyond the arc in the last four games. After averaging just 3.5 ppg during a four-game stretch from Nov. 25 through Dec. 6, Cox has finished in double figures in seven of her last eight games, leading SDSU in scoring four times and averaging 12.0 ppg. Last season, Cox averaged 13.7 ppg en route to all-newcomer team honors. She s Baaack! After missing all of last season with a torn left ACL and the first 11 games of the current campaign with a severely broken left thumb (39 games in all), senior Sophia Sledge finally returned to the lineup at Jan. 7. After getting her feet wet at Cal Poly (0 points in four minutes of work), Sledge showed why she was SDSU s leading scorer during the season, connecting on 6-of-10 from the field at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, including a pair of treys, to finish with a co-team-high 14 points. The senior added nine points against BYU before scoring 12 off the bench at New Mexico. Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot Junior Claire Swinbank has been on a serious roll in San Diego State s last six games, scoring in double figures four times, including a season-best 17 points at Air Force. She also collected a career-high seven rebounds against Utah. Swinbank has now scored in double figures in 7-of-17 contests and ranks third on the team in scoring at 8.7 ppg. Good Knight! Just how big has junior Tanisha Knight been for the since arriving from Central Arizona College? Knight, who has scored in double figures in 11-of-17 games, leads San Diego State in both scoring (11.2) and rebounding (5.3). In fact, Knight opened the week ranked 11th in scoring, eighth in steals, third in blocks and 13th in rebounding. She also scored her first Division I game winner at Air Force, canning an 18-foot jumper with 23 seconds to play. Mountain West Conference Stats Individual Category* Avg. Scoring 11.
