Women s Basketball Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) averaged 19.0 points per game over NU s last four games, including a season-best 24-point performance vs. No. 17 Ohio State. In that contest, Jaeschke limited last year s co-big Ten Player of the Year, Jantel Lavender, to just five second-half points. In Sunday s upset win against Wisconsin, she did a little bit of everything, notching 12 points, four blocks, four rebounds, two steals and two assists. WINTER SPORTS RELEASE #4 Jan. 5, 2009 A T H L E T E S of the W E E K Brandon Precin Jr. Wrestling Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) captured the first Midlands championship of his career Tuesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Second-seeded Precin edged Iowa State s fourth-seeded Tyler Clark in the finals of the 125-pound division, posting a 3-2 decision. Three of Precin s four wins on his way to the finals came by major decision. He is now 16-1 overall this season. COMMUNITY SERVICE ATHLETES of the WEEK Jeff Ryan Jr. Men s Basketball Jeff Ryan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and other student-athletes from the men s basketball team paid a visit to Dett Elementary School in Chicago. Ryan and his teammates attended the school s basketball practice to give pointers and speak with the children about the importance of hard work and the value of a good education. Afterward, they signed autographs and took pictures with the youngsters. No. 23 F O O T B A L L 9-4 (5-3) Head Coach: Pat Fitzgerald Record at NU: (three yrs.) Last Week s Results: Valero Alamo Bowl Missouri 30, NU 23 (OT) This Week s Schedule: Season Complete C.J. Bachér (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit) tied a Valero Alamo Bowl record with three touchdown passes and racked up 304 yards, but No. 21 Missouri kicked a game-tying field goal late in the fourth quarter before defeating No. 23 Northwestern in overtime, In what proved to be the 10th-most watched bowl game in ESPN history, NU forced Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel to throw three interceptions while limiting him to 200 yards through the air, keeping a prolific Tigers offense in check. Bachér s TD passes were all directed to his reliable senior wideouts as Eric Peterman (Sherman, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) caught a 35-yard toss to open the scoring, Rasheed Ward (Chicago, Ill./Harper) hauled in a 46-yard pass on the first possession of the second half and Ross Lane (Ft. Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) was the beneficiary of a 23-yard strike that gave NU a lead after three quarters. Senior tailback Tyrell Sutton (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) returned to the lineup for the Cats after missing the final four games of the regular season with a fractured wrist. Sutton totaled 114 rushing yards and 29 receiving yards to pace Northwestern. M E N S B A S K E T B A L L 8-4 (0-2) Head Coach: Bill Carmody Last Week s Results: NU 66, SMU 55 Record at NU: (eight yrs.) Penn State 61, NU 57 Career Record: (12 yrs.) Michigan State 77, NU 66 This Week s Schedule: Wed., Jan. 7 at Wisconsin Madison, Wis. 7:30 p.m. BTN Northwestern picked up its eighth win of the year in a victory against SMU on Dec. 23 as Craig Moore (Doylestown, Pa./Lawrenceville (N.J.) Prep) and Michael Thompson (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) scored 14 points apiece as the Cats used a strong start to the second half to pull away from the Mustangs. NU held a six-point halftime lead despite being forced to sit its two leading scorers Moore and Kevin Coble (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) for the last 12 minutes of the first period due to foul trouble. After the break, NU s lead stretched to 16 thanks to a 19-9 run to start the second stanza. The Wildcats knocked down nine of their first 12 field goal attempts, capped by a thunderous backdoor slam by John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) as the lead grew to as many as 20. On New Year s Eve, Northwestern led by as many as 11 early in the second half, but host Penn State spoiled the Wildcats Big Ten opener by rallying for a victory at the Bryce Jordan Center. Coble and Moore contributed 11 points apiece while Thompson had a solid all-around game with 10 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals and no turnovers. PSU connected on just five of its first 22 field goal attempts in the first half and seven of 30 overall (23.3 percent) in the first half but came alive behind red-hot shooting by point guard Talor Battle, who hit five of seven 3-pointers and collected a game-high 12 rebounds. Saturday in front of a packed house at Welsh-Ryan Arena, NU used 12 first-half points by Coble to claim a lead at the break, but 10th-ranked Michigan State raced out of the halftime gates with a 12-0 run and went on to defeat Northwestern, Moore chipped in 16 points for the Wildcats and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career on a 3-pointer with 2:58 remaining in the first half.

Last Week s Results: 46th Midlands Championships 5th/47 This Week s Schedule: Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals Sat.-Sun., Jan Cedar Falls, Iowa All Day On a night where plenty of hardware was passed out at Welsh-Ryan Arena, three Wildcats had career nights as junior Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) (125) and senior Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) (184) captured Midlands crowns, their first and third, respectively, while freshman Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) (157) finished in fifth place in his first Midlands as a collegiate wrestler. Top-seeded Herbert was a unanimous selection for the Dan Gable Outstanding Wrestler Award following his dominant performance during which he won by two pins, a 19-4 tech fall and a 15-1 major decision in the final against second-seeded Phil Keddy of Iowa. Precin defeated Iowa State s Tyler Clark in the finale, winning by a 3-2 decision thanks in part to a takedown with 35 seconds remaining, to improve his season record to Welch, who placed sixth at Midlands as a high school senior in 2007, reached the semifinals before falling to 34-year old Chris Bono, the current head coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga and eventual champion at 157 pounds. NU placed fifth (88.5 points) in the team standings while Iowa edged Iowa State for the team title with points. Of the 122 pins that were recorded in the 2008 Midlands, Wildcats freshman Eric Galka (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) recorded the fastest fall with his pin of Triton s Vince Vallez in just 18 seconds. After taking on many of the nation s best wrestlers at Midlands, the upcoming competition doesn t get any easier for Northwestern, with the heralded Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on tap beginning Jan. 10 followed by the start of the Big Ten season with Michigan State at home on Jan. 23. W O M E N S B A S K E T B A L L 5-10 (1-3) Head Coach: Joe McKeown Last Week s Results: NU 67, North Dakota 65 Record at NU: 5-10 (first yr.) Michigan 66, NU 54 Career Record: (22 yrs.) Ohio State 68, NU 59 NU 49, Wisconsin 46 This Week s Schedule: Thu., Jan. 8 at Michigan State East Lansing, Mich. 6 p.m. Sun., Jan. 11 vs. Purdue Evanston 2 p.m. It was a busy few weeks for NU beginning on Dec. 22 when Northwestern used a 63 percent first-half shooting clip and 21 points from Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) to defeat North Dakota, Senior Erin Dickerson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) tied a personal best with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range while classmate Ellen Jaeschke (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) chipped in 10 points. Northwestern held a nine-point edge with 3:20 left but a 7-0 run by the Fighting Sioux pulled the game to within a bucket, 65-63, at the 2:00 mark. With the score tied and under a minute remaining, Dickerson fed Ellen Jaeschke down low, leading to a two-shot foul with 4.5 seconds to play. Jaeschke sunk both free throws to give NU a edge and ultimately the victory. The Cats then hit the road to take on Michigan where Jaeschke compiled 19 points, but it was not enough as Northwestern dropped a decision at Crisler Arena. Back in Evanston, NU battled valiantly against No. 17 Ohio State as Jaeschke helped limit last year s co-big Ten Player of the Year Jantel Lavender to just 15 points and six rebounds, the first game this year Lavender did not record a double-double. On the offensive end, Jaeschke poured in 24 points while junior Kristin Cartwright (Lake Forest, Ill./ Lake Forest) and sophomore Meshia Reed (Country Club Hills, Ill./Stockbridge (Ga.)) contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Cats. Sunday, the Wildcats notched their biggest win of the Joe McKeown era, a win against Wisconsin, which entered the game with a 12-2 record while receiving votes in both polls. Defense was a big part of the reason the Wildcats were able to make big plays down the stretch. Northwestern used a combination of defensive looks to wreak havoc on the Badger offense, causing 16 turnovers, including 10 from UW s usually solid guards. In the meantime, the Cats only coughed the ball up on 11 occasions. Late in the game, a layup by Jaeschke and two clutch free throws by freshman Brittany Orban (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) sealed Northwestern s first Big Ten win of the year.
