Last Week s Results: No game scheduled This Week s Schedule: No game scheduled Northwestern University Director of Athletics Jim Phillips and Valero Alamo Bowl President/CEO Derrick Fox have announced that the University has accepted a bid to play in the 16th annual Valero Alamo Bowl, Monday, Dec. 29 in San Antonio, Texas. The Wildcats (9-3), the Big Ten Conference representative, will play Missouri (9-4), the Big 12 Conference representative, at 7 p.m. CST (ESPN HD, ESPN Radio, WGN 720 AM, WNUR 89.3 FM) in The Alamodome. The Alamo Bowl has quickly become one of the most popular bowls in the country, producing eight of the top 25 mostwatched bowl games in ESPN history while selling out three of the last four years. Northwestern fans are urged to purchase their tickets through the Northwestern Ticket Office. Tickets can be purchased online at NUsports.com, by calling CATS, in person at the ticket office (1501 Central Street, Evanston, Ill ) or by mailing in an application which can be found at NUsports.com. Additionally, Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald has been named the Big Ten Coach of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus. Fitzgerald guided NU to its first bowl berth since 2005 while helping the Wildcats become just the fifth team in school history to win nine games and the first since 1996 when Fitzgerald was the team s star linebacker. No. 17 M E N S S O C C E R (3-3-0) Head Coach: Tim Lenahan Last Week s Results: North Carolina 1, NU 0 Record at NU: (eight yrs.) This Week s Schedule: Season complete Career Record: (19 yrs.) In its second trip to the NCAA Tournament s Elite Eight in three years, Northwestern saw its postseason run come to an end with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of 13th-seeded North Carolina at Fetzler Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. Saturday. Northwestern finished the year with a school-record-tying 15 wins. Junior goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) stopped four shots in the contest. North Carolina s game-winning chance came in the 61st minute after a scuffle in front led to a Tar Heels corner. Northwestern managed to clear the initial cross, but UNC served in another ball that deflected off an NU defender and landed at the feet of North Carolina s Kirk Urso. The Tar Heel freshman slotted the ball in the far panel to give UNC the lead. Northwestern pressed furiously to find the equalizer and generated several legitimate scoring opportunities in the final minutes. Freshman forward Oliver Kupe (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) made a run on the endline before sliding the ball to Jack Hillgard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) at the corner of the 6-yard box, but Hillgard s shot was blocked by a sliding Brooks Haggerty. For the game, the Tar Heels managed to outshoot Northwestern by a 15-9 margin. Northwestern created a scoring opportunity in the first minute off a free kick from the left side when forward Matt Eliason (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) was left unmarked in front of the goal, but his header to the far post fell just wide. Just five minutes later, an endline cross from Piero Bellizzi (Rye, N.Y./Rye) found Tyler Voigt (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) at the right corner of the box, but Voigt s shot went just high to the near post. Northwestern was one of just two Big Ten teams still standing in the Elite Eight, joining Indiana, who fell to St. John s, 3-2, on Saturday.

Trailing by three heading into the last four matches, No. 17 Northwestern got critical pins by second-ranked Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and heavyweight Paul Rands (Cary, Ill./Cary), along with decisions by Robert Kellogg (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) and John Schoen (Roselle, Ill./Marist) down the stretch to down Northern Illinois at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Kellogg recorded a narrow 5-4 victory against Derrick Yant in the 174-pound division that effectively turned the tide of a close match for Northwestern. Herbert followed with his sixth fall of the year a pin of NIU s Justin Carlson in 1:20 to improve to 10-0 in his senior campaign. Herbert now has 125 career wins, good for third all-time in Northwestern history. At 197, Schoen capitalized on Northwestern s seizing of momentum, earning a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Brad Dieckhaus. Early in the match, junior All-American and third-ranked Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) continued his dominance in 2008 with an 11-4 decision over Izzy Montemayor at 125. After an NU loss at 133, No. 8 Keith Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward) squared off against the Huskies Vince Castillo. Sulzer jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with a takedown before going up 3-0 on an escape in the second frame. Castillo earned a late takedown in the third period to make it a 3-2 match, but Sulzer held on in a critical win for Northwestern. Freshman Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) wrestled in his first match since returning from an illness and posted a 5-0 win against Northern Illinois Bryan Deutsch, who entered the night with a 6-1 record. Welch is now 8-1 this year. Rands finished off the match for the Cats with an impressive fall against Zak Saevre in just 1:22. NU returns to competition on Friday, Dec. 19, at Pittsburgh. M E N S B A S K E T B A L L 6-1 (0-0) Head Coach: Bill Carmody Last Week s Results: NU 59, UC Riverside 53 Record at NU: (eight yrs.) NU 73, Florida State 59 Career Record: (12 yrs.) NU 63, DePaul 36 This Week s Schedule: Mon., Dec. 15 vs. UMKC Evanston 7 p.m. BTN Northwestern enjoyed a perfect 3-0 stretch at Welsh-Ryan Arena last week to lift its record to 6-1, the team s best start since opening 7-1 in First against UC Riverside, Northwestern used a balanced scoring attack and another strong defensive performance to claim a win. Four Wildcats landed in double-figure scoring on the day, led by junior Kevin Coble (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) with 14, while senior point guard Michael Thompson (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) did a little bit of everything, racking up eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. NU kept things going with a victory against Florida State Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, dealing the Seminoles their first loss of the season. Senior guard Craig Moore (Doylestown, Pa./Lawrenceville (N.J.) Prep) scored a team-high 20 points and a pivotal 8-point scoring streak in the second half by sophomore Ivan Peljusic (Zadar, Croatia/V. Nazor Gymnasium) helped head coach Bill Carmody come away with his 200th career win. With the Seminoles leading by one and 16 minutes left to play, Peljusic electrified the spectators at Welsh-Ryan Arena with a trio of game-changing baskets. First, he broke ahead of the pack for a two-handed slam that gave the Cats a one-point advantage. After FSU answered with a dunk of its own, Peljusic knocked down a three from the top of the key to reclaim the lead. On NU s ensuing possession, Peljusic again leaked out for a long pass from Coble and finished a tough layup while drawing a foul, giving Northwestern a lead and bringing the crowd to its feet entering the under-16 media timeout. From there, Northwestern managed to keep control of the game thanks in part to 11 second-half points by Moore and a game-high seven assists by Coble, who also had 15 points and eight rebounds. Saturday against DePaul, Coble scored a season-high 25 points and Moore added 14 points to lead Northwestern to a victory, a game in which it scored the first seven points and never saw its second-half lead dip below 13. NU hosts UMKC in its fourth-consecutive home game Monday, Dec. 15.

This Week s Schedule: Sun., Dec. 14 at DePaul Chicago, Ill. 2 p.m. Northwestern continued its habit of playing games that go down to the wire but suffered a pair of close losses last week, falling to Marquette, 55-54, before losing in overtime at Clemson, Against the Golden Eagles, NU built a 14-point halftime lead but was unable to withstand Marquette s charge down the stretch. In holding Marquette to 55 points on the night, NU kept the high-powered Golden Eagles 25 points below their season average. Junior Kristin Cartwright (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) led the Cats with 12 points but it was not enough as Erin Dickerson s (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) would-be game-tying 3-point basket came just after the buzzer. Thursday in South Carolina, sophomore Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) recorded a career-best 34 points on 11-of-24 shooting but Clemson came from behind in the waning seconds of regulation and force overtime. In the extra session, the Tigers gained a four-point advantage, which was cut in half by two Meshia Reed (Country Club Hills, Ill./Stockbridge (Ga.)) free throws, but NU came no closer the rest of the way. Jaeschke finished the game 12-of-13 from the free throw stripe, tying a Wildcat record for free throws attempted in a game, while her 34 points matches the Big Ten mark for points scored this season.
