1 Chelsy Hyser Sr. Volleyball Chelsy Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) helped Northwestern to a 2-1 record, including two come-from-behind wins against Georgetown and Virginia, and a runner-up finish at the Wildcat Classic. Hyser posted a season-high 17 kills in all three games for a total of 51, with a hitting percentage of.327. She also had nine blocks, nine digs and a pair of service aces. A T H L E T E S of the W E E K Vince Browne RFr. Football Vince Browne (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) had a breakout day in Northwestern s 16-8 win over Ohio. Browne, the Defensive Player of the Week in the Big Ten, constantly disrupted the Bobcats backfield, recording seven tackles (four for loss) and three sacks. He also had a forced fumble and blocked an OU field goal attempt. Northwestern s defense held Ohio to a school single-game record of four rushing yards. COMMUNITY SERVICE ATHLETE of the WEEK Adam Hahn & Mark Ison Football Adam has been dedicating his time as a basketball coach in the City of Evanston Special Recreation Department while Mark has been working with the New Trier Special Olympics organization. Representatives and participants from both groups were the special guests of Northwestern Athletics this weekend and watched the Cats victory over Ohio. Mark also served as the Master of Ceremonies at the Special Olympics Area Track and Field event last spring. This Week s Schedule: Sat., Sept. 27 vs. Iowa Career Record: Same Iowa City, Iowa 11 a.m. CT (ESPN Classic) Northwestern s defense came to play against Ohio, holding the Bobcats to a single-game school record four net rushing yards to help the Wildcats to their first 4-0 start since Northwestern made 14 tackles-for-loss, including five sacks of Ohio quarterback Boo Jackson, who set an Ohio school record for all-purpose yards the week before against Central Michigan. NU also blocked two field goals, recovered two fumbles, intercepted two passes and broke up six other passes in a 16-8 victory at Ryan Field. Overall, the Bobcats had 14 plays (for 62 yards) of negative yardage. Redshirt freshman defensive end Vince Browne (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) had a huge defensive day, recording seven tackles (four for loss) including three sacks to go along with a forced fumble, a blocked field goal and a quarterback hurry. Browne and Amado Villarreal (Englewood, Colo./Englewood), who kicked three first-half field goals, were named Big Ten Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively. Senior Tyrell Sutton (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) had 76 rushing yards on nine attempts in addition to three catches for 27 yards in the first half, but did not return in the second half after sustaining a leg injury. His receiving yardage put him over 1,000 for his career, making him the second student-athlete in school history to have more than 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in a career, joining Ricky Edwards ( ). NU opens Big Ten Conference play this Saturday when it takes on Iowa in Iowa City. Noon Northwestern remained a perfect 4-0 at home in 2008 thanks to two convincing wins against Saint Louis and Robert Morris this weekend. Senior Alexandra Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) had a hand in five NU s six goals, scoring two goals and assisting on three others as Northwesten defeated SLU, 6-1. Quinn, who found the back of the cage two more times in a 4-0 victory against RMU, was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and now sits atop the league leaders with 10 goals in Senior goalkeeper Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University H.S.) stopped four shots in each game and earned her third clean sheet of the year against Robert Morris, marking the first time since 2003 Northwestern has posted at least three shutout wins in a season. In its four games at Lakeside Field thus far, NU has outscored opponents by a 21-3 margin. Northwestern travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., for two games against ranked opponents, No. 16 Michigan on Saturday and No. 19 California on Sunday.

This Week s Schedule: Sat., Sept. 27 vs. No. 15 Ohio State Evanston 7:30 p.m. No. 9 Northwestern matched its best start ever to a season (7-0-1) by posting a pair of 1-0 home wins over the weekend. NU battled past Loyola Marymount on Friday behind Drew Ratner s (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal) goal in the 83rd minute of play. Ratner headed home a perfect serve from Piero Bellizzi (Rye, N.Y./Rye) off a corner kick. Earlier in the second half, Ratner headed a potential tally by the Lions off the Cats goal line. Misha Rosenthal (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) made one save to earn the shutout in goal. On Sunday, Princeton stood toe-to-toe with the Wildcats, but a goal by Matt Eliason (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) just over 14 minutes into the second half was the difference. Tyler Voigt (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) was credited with an assist on the play. It was the seventh goal of the season for Eliason, a mark that leads the Big Ten. Rosenthal made a pair of stops to earn his 17th career shutout and set a Northwestern career record. He also tied a school single-season mark with his seventh shutout of the season. NU opens Big Ten play this Saturday when they host defending national runner-up No. 15 Ohio State at Lakeside Field. Both teams spent much of the early-going feeling each other out before Northwestern took dominating control of the run of play. Northwestern s best chance of the first half came in the 20th minute when Laura Janowitsch (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) took a ball at the top right edge of the box and made a quick move to the inside, firing a shot to the far post that SLU keeper Hannah Perry dove to save. Northwestern finished the game with a 12-4 edge in shots and a 13-1 advantage in corners. Goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made three saves to pick up her third shutout of the season. This week, NU travels to Milwaukee for a midweek contest with the Panthers before hosting a pair of Big Ten foes, Purdue and Illinois, this weekend. No. 4 UCLA 3, NU 1 This Week s Schedule: Fri., Sept. 26 at Minnesota Minneapolis 7 p.m. Sat., Sept. 27 at Iowa Iowa City, Iowa 7 p.m. Northwestern went 2-1 and captured runner-up honors at the 27th annual Wildcat Classic this weekend at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Friday, the Wildcats rallied from a pair of 2-1 deficits against both Georgetown and Virginia to take thrilling five set matches. NU defeated the Hoyas, 18-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12, and followed it up with a 25-15, 23-25, 17-25, 25-15, 15-13, comeback win over the Cavaliers. Senior Chelsy Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./ Belvidere) set a new season-high with 17 kills in each contest, while sophomore Brittani Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) posted 11 kills against the Hoyas and 12 against Virginia. Saturday pitted the Wildcats against No.4 UCLA in front of an energetic Welsh-Ryan Arena crowd, and NU came ready to play. The Cats challenged the Bruins in every set and held off seven set-point serves from UCLA to defeat the Bruins, 32-20, in the second. But UCLA was able to hold off Northwestern to earn the 25-19, 30-32, 25-22, four-set victory. Hyser finished the weekend with 51 kills (3.64 per set) and nine blocks while Gray added 32 kills of her own. Sophomore Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) had another solid weekend for NU, totaling 118 assists, 17 kills and 10 blocks. Sophomore Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) recorded 30 kills with a.365 hitting percentage and junior Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had 59 digs as both were named to the all-tournament team. Northwestern now begins the challenging Big Ten portion of its schedule, traveling to No. 8 Minnesota to face the Gophers at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, before heading south to Iowa to meet up with the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27.

3 Page Three C R O S S C O U N T R Y Head Coach: April Likhite (fifth year) Last Week s Results: 2nd/6 Mississippi State Invitational This Week s Schedule: Sat., Sept. 27 Loyola Invitational Chicago 11 a.m. Freshman Sophie Ewald (Berlin, Germany/Barron (Wis.)) paced all Northwestern runners in the Mississippi State Invitational Saturday, finishing second among 36 runners in the 5K event with a time of 18: Northwestern placed second as a team for the third straight meet, coming in behind Mississippi State and ahead of Mississippi and Louisiana State. It was the second straight meet in which Ewald has crossed first for the Wildcats. NU had three runners finish in the top 10, as freshman Rachel Kaminski (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) took fifth (19:15.37), senior Marcellee Fullwood (Houston, Texas/Cypress Falls) nabbed seventh (19:35.85), and freshman Rachel Edwards (Eden Praire, Minn./Eden Praire) claimed ninth (19:46.58). NU will compete in the Loyola Invitational in Chicago on Saturday. Alexander Thams (Stockholm, Sweden/Enskilda Gymnasiet) was named singles champion while freshman Eric Spector (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) showed why he was a top recruit with a runner-up finish. Another freshman also made an impact as Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) paired with junior Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) to capture the doubles title. Sanborn, Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), and Philip Kafka (Dallas, Texas /Greenhill) all recorded a victory on Sunday to finish the tournament with 2-1 records. This weekend, NU hosts the Wildcat Fall Invitational at the Vandy Christie Outdoor Tennis Center. All Day After setting a new standard for team wins in a season and capturing a 10th straight Big Ten Championship in , Northwestern returns to the courts Sept at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. In the recently released ITA Preseason Rankings, NU senior Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) and sophomore Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia/No. 204) the last two Big Ten Players of the Year are ranked No. 6 and No. 11, respectively, making NU the only school with two players in the top 12 nationally. Mosolova and Rose also earned bids to the main draw of the 2008 ITA All-American Championships to be held Oct. 2-5 at UCLA. The doubles team of Rose and junior Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid), which earned a No. 7 ranking in the preseason poll, will compete in the main draw of the doubles tournament. Under 10th-year head coach Claire Pollard, Northwestern returns all but two players to a team that earned the school its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament last spring. Two freshman newcomers, Stacey Lee (Old Westbury, N.Y./Wheatley) and Elena Chernyakova (Moscow, Russia) will look to contribute immediately in both singles and doubles action.

4 Page Four M E N S G O L F Head Coach: Pat Goss (13th year) Last Week s Results: 13th/15 Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational This Week s Schedule: Idle Northwestern placed 13th at the season opening Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at the Olympia Fields North Course, site of the 2003 U.S. Open. Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) led the Wildcats with an 11th-place effort of 4-over 214, firing rounds of on the par-70 course. Freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) also had a round under par in the tournament, firing a 1-under 69 in the second round before finishing in 33rd place with a 54-hole total of 12-over 222. Sophomore Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./ Neuqua Valley) had a disastrous opening round, but recovered to help the team score with efforts of 6-over 76 and 2-over 72 in the final two rounds. Matt Denison (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) finished 67th with a 21-over 231 ( ) while Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) also competed for the Cats in the tournament. Northwestern returns to action October 5-6 in its own Windon Memorial Classic at North Shore Country Club. W O M E N S G O L F Head Coach: Emily Fletcher (first year) Last Week s Results: 6th/12 This Week s Schedule: Idle Three Wildcats shot a four-over 76 to lead NU to a sixth-place finish at the season-opening Mary Fossum Invitational. Senior Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) finished the 54-hole tournament in a tie for 20th place after shooting a 15-over 231 ( ). Entering the final round in a sixth-place tie with Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan, the Wildcats shot a 307 over the final 18 holes to distance themselves, finishing the tournament at 61-over 925 ( ), seven strokes better than seventh-place Michigan and 14 better than eighth-place Iowa. Sophomore Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) also shot a four-over 76 on the day, finishing the tournament with a 16-over 232 ( ) and just missed cracking the top-20, finishing in a tie for 22nd. Sophomore Innahpa Tantanavivat (Bangkok, Thailand/ David Leadbetter Academy) was a stroke back of Lindenschmidt with a 17-over 233 ( ) while freshman Alexandra Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) was the third Cat to shoot a 76, completing her first collegiate tournament at 18-over 234 ( ) to finish in a tie for 32nd-place.
