3 BIG TEN STANDINGS (all games through Jan. 28) Team Big Ten Overall Wisconsin Ohio State Indiana Michigan State Michigan Purdue Iowa Illinois Minnesota Northwestern Penn State Coble Among Top NU Freshmen With his 12.0 ppg average, Kevin Coble is on pace to become just the fifth true-freshman to lead the Wildcats in scoring since the season when freshman became eligible for varsity competition. Ben Johnson was the last Wildcat to do it in 2000 when he averaged 11.6 ppg. Cedric Neloms also did it in 1992 with 14.4 ppg, Jim Stack in 1980 with 12.9 and Billy McKinney Northwestern s all-time leading scorer with 15.8 ppg in Coble also is making an strong case for Big Ten All-Freshmen honors this season. Among conference newcomers, he ranks fourth in scoring (12.0), fifth in rebounding (4.7), sixth in FG percentage (.500) and third in 3FG percentage (.371). His perfect 5-of-5 shooting performance from behind the arc against Utah in December is tied for the best 3FG shooting performance in the Big Ten this season among all players. He averaged 20.3 ppg in three games at the San Juan Shootout and was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts. Northwestern is 4-1 this season when Coble leads the team in scoring. The only loss was a one-point setback to Tennessee Tech at the San Juan Shootout where Coble s 3-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out. He has 12 games this season in which he has scored in double digits and three 20-point games. Cats Rank Second Nationally in Assist/FG Ratio Northwestern is second among all Division I teams in assist-to-field goal ratio, according to the latest statistical release Jan. 24. The Wildcats have assisted on 306-of-422 (.725) makes, more than 70 percent of their baskets. In the win over Northwestern State on New Year s Eve, the Wildcats assisted on 27-of- 34 field goals, the most assists in the Carmody era. They trail only Sam Houston State who has a.746 ratio. Doyle On Record-Setting Pace With 107 assists, senior Tim Doyle is on pace to break Northwestern s single-season record for assists which currently stands at 154 (Patrick Baldwin, 1994). With his 5.35 apg average, he is on pace for 168 by season s end. Last year he became just the sixth player in Northwestern history to record at least 200 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists in the same season. He is on pace to duplicate that feat again this year. Date and Time Set for Indiana Game ESPN has selected its Wildcard games for Feb and the Wildcats will face the Indiana Hoosiers at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Evanston. The game will be broadcast live nationally on ESPN2. The national broadcast brings the total number of nationally televised regular-season games for the Wildcats to four (three of those at home). Northwestern has one more regular-season game slated on ESPN2 on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at home against in-state rival Illinois. Balanced Attack Unlike recent years, the Wildcats aren t relying on one or two players for a majority of the offense. This season Northwestern has had seven different players lead or tie for the team lead in scoring. Last season after 20 games, Vedran Vukusic (19.0 ppg) had led the team in scoring 17 times and led in 20-of-29 games overall. Home Cookin In the last five-plus years the Wildcats have recorded a (.694) overall record at Welsh- Ryan Arena, including a mark in Big Ten play. The Wildcats have reached double figures in home wins in four of the past five years including a school-record 12 in which was a first for the program. This year the Wildcats are 8-4 at home. About Minnesota Minnesota is led by interim head coach Jim Molinari who replaced Dan Monson after his resignation after the Clemson game 14 games ago. Since taking over, the Gophers are 6-8. Junior guard Lawrence McKenzie leads Minnesota and is sixth in Big Ten scoring with 15.8 ppg, including 19 in the win over Penn State on Saturday. McKenzie possesses excellent range, connecting on 56 3-pointers, an average of 2.67 per game third best in the conference. Junior forward Dan Coleman is second with 14.7 ppg and eighth in the conference. LAST GAME VS. MINNESOTA Jan. 20, 2007 Minneapolis, Minn. NU 55, Minnesota 40 Vince Scott led NU with 15 points and Kevin Coble added 13 off the bench as the Wildcats picked up their first conference win with a victory over Minnesota. Coble was 6-of-12 off the bench in his first action since missing Northwestern s previous two games with a sprained ankle. Northwestern used its defense to frustrate the Gophers, forcing Minnesota into a season-worst 33 percent shooting. Minnesota went 17-for-51 from the field, including 3-of-19 from 3-point range. Jeff Ryan had four of Northwestern s six steals. He finished with nine points including a breakaway dunk and three assists. The Wildcats showed patience on offense with good ball movement, which led to several easy layups. Northwestern scored 30 points in the paint to Minnesota s 18. They led by as many as 18 points and never trailed. Dan Coleman pulled Minnesota to at 14:15 of the second half with his only 3-pointer of the game. But Northwestern responded with six unanswered including back-to-back threes by Scott and Coble to give the Wildcats a lead with 8:49 to play. Minnesota, which had two scoreless six-minute stretches during the game, never came closer than 14 points the rest of the way. 4 Minnesota has been playing without the services of starting center Spencer Tollackson (12.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg) who suffered a broken left hand earlier this month. He is questionable for tonight s game. Jim Molinari, who replaced former head coach Dan Monson in November, is a native of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and a graduate of Glenbard West High School. After spending two years as a scout in the NBA, Molinari enjoyed a 24-year career as a collegiate head and assistant coach at the Division I level. For 11 seasons, he was the head coach at Bradley where he amassed a record and guided the Braves to the postseason six times five NIT appearances and a trip to the 1996 NCAA Tournament. From , he served as the head coach at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Scott Top Cat In Big Ten Action Since his four-point, zero-rebound performance in the win over Wheaton (Ill.) back in December, senior Vince Scott has stepped up his level of play since and is averaging 9.6 points in Big Ten games best on the team. It started with 17 total rebounds and 12 points in the first two games of the San Juan Shootout. Then against Utah, Scott helped shut down the Utes 7-foot-1 center Luke Nevill (19.6 ppg), holding him to just eight points. Also in that game, Scott was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field with three 3-pointers. Then in the win over Loyola (Md.), he remained perfect, going 7-of-7 from the field with a career-high 16 points in the win. In the win over Northwestern State, Scott recorded a career-high seven assists and seven rebounds in 25 minutes of action before scoring 11 points with two 3-pointers in the road loss at Michigan State. In the recent road win at Minnesota, he led the Cats with 15 points and hit three from downtown. He hit three more treys in the loss to No. 5 Ohio State at home. Ryan Shines In First Start With leading scorer Kevin Coble out with an ankle injury, freshman Jeff Ryan earned his first career start against No. 3 Wisconsin on Jan. 13 and lit up the Badgers for 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He has started every game since and is averaging 7.3 points over that stretch. Cats Enjoy Best Nonconference Season in 13 Years The 10-3 (.769) mark through the nonconference portion of the season was the best record since the Wildcats went 9-0 to open the season in That year the Wildcats advanced to the NIT where they defeated DePaul in the opening round before falling to Xavier in the second round giving them a 10-1 (.909) nonconference mark. This year Northwestern posted 10 wins before Big Ten play for the first time in school history. They have one more nonconference regular-season game remaining with Texas-Pan American on Feb. 21. 5 Seven Straight The win over Northwestern State on New Year s Eve marked the seventh-straight year the Wildcats have reached double-digits in the win column. Northwestern has won at least 11 games in all of Carmody s seasons and marks the first time the Cats have reached double-digit victories in seven straight seasons since Northwestern In The NCAA Ranks According to the latest NCAA Division I statistical report released Jan. 28, Northwestern ranks No. 10 nationally scoring defense, giving up just 56.6 ppg. They also are fifth in fewest turnovers per game (11.0) and 10th with only 14.5 personal fouls per contest. Its 8.8 steals per game is good for 34th. The Wildcats turned the ball over a season-low five times in the win over cross-town rival DePaul with two of those coming on shot clock violations. They also kept the TO s in the single digits against Miami (Fla.) with only nine miscues, seven against Wheaton (Ill.), nine against third-ranked Wisconsin, and eight at Minnesota and at home vs. No. 5 Ohio State. Individually, Tim Doyle is 39th in the nation with 5.35 assists per game. He had eight in the loss to Wisconsin Jan. 13 and a career-high nine against Northwestern State on New Year s Eve. Cats Set 3-Point Shooting Record The Wildcats made a school record 73.3 percent from behind the arc (11-of-15) in the win over Utah Dec. 21. Further, the 69.2 percent shooting for the game was the best percentage since the Wildcats made 70.2 percent back in 1998 against Troy State. Those two marks are the best percentages among Big Ten teams this season. The.690 percent from the field overall is the ninth-best in the NCAA Division I ranks this season. Moore Best Over Two-Game Stretch Craig Moore s 13 makes from behind the arc in the Miami and Western Michigan games is the best mark over a two-game stretch in Northwestern s history. The previous mark was 12 set by Geno Carlisle in 1996 and again by Sean Wink in Carlisle hit 17 in a three-game span and 22 over a four-game both in 1996 and both school records. Moore tied a school record with seven in the win over Miami (Fla.) and had six in the next game in the overtime win over Western Michigan. He is sixth in the Big Ten with FG per game and has 11 games with multiple 3FG s three with six or more. Wildcats Have Success When Leading at the Half When NU goes into the locker room at halftime with the lead, its odds for a W are good. Over the last two-plus seasons, the Wildcats have been up at the half 31 times and have won 26. In head coach Bill Carmody s tenure, the Wildcats are a remarkable when leading at the half NORTHWESTERN/OPPONENT GAME HIGHS/LOWS NORTHWESTERN HIGHS POINTS vs. Northwestern State (12/31/06) FIELD GOALS MADE vs. Northwestern State (12/31/06) FIELD GOAL ATTEMPTS vs. Tennessee Tech (12/19/06) FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE (29-42) vs. Utah (12/21/06) 3 PT FIELD GOALS MADE (3 times) last at Penn State (1/3/07) 3 PT FG ATTEMPTS (2 times) last at Penn State (1/3/07) 3 PT FG PERCENTAGE (11-15) vs. Utah (12/21/06) FREE THROWS MADE vs. Western Michigan (12/9/06) FREE THROW ATTEMPTS vs. Western Michigan (12/9/06) FREE THROW PERCENTAGE (13-15) vs. UPR-Mayaguez (12/20/06) REBOUNDS (2 times) vs. Northwestern State (12/31/06) ASSISTS vs. Northwestern State (12/31/06) STEALS vs. Northwestern State (12/31/06) BLOCKED SHOTS vs Brown (11/21/06) TURNOVERS at Ohio State (1/17/07) LOWS POINTS vs. North Florida (11/25/06) FIELD GOALS MADE (2 times) last vs. Michigan State (1/10/07) FIELD GOAL ATTEMPTS vs Miami-Fla. Noting Head Coach Bill Carmody Though it sometimes gets overlooked, head coach Bill Carmody has turned Northwestern into a consistent winner. Over the past six full years, the Wildcats have won 82 games, the best six-year win total in the program s history. Northwestern has won at least 11 games in all of Carmody s seasons, marking the first time the Cats have reached double figures in the win column seven straight seasons since This is by far one of the youngest teams head coach Bill Carmody has coached in his career. In his first season in he had seven freshmen and zero seniors. This year he has six freshmen, four sophomores and two junior-eligible players who did not see action last season in Okrzesik and Tolic. Ten of the 15 players on the roster are freshmen or sophomores in terms of eligibility. In Big Ten play, Northwestern has won 30 regularseason conference games during the past five full years, the most over a five-year period since (32). In Carmody s six-full seasons the Wildcats have won 33 Big Ten regular-season games; prior to his arrival, NU had 28 conference victories in the previous 12 seasons. The Wildcats have won 10 or more home games four of the past five years, including 12 in , a program record, and nine in Northwestern is at home the last five-plus years, and have had a winning mark at Welsh-Ryan every year under Carmody after doing so just twice in the six seasons prior to his arrival. Every Class Represented Through the first 19 games this season, the Wildcats had started a fifth-year (Doyle), a fourthyear (Scott), a third-year (Williams), a second-year (Moore) and a first-year in true-freshman in either Coble or Ryan. After Coble returned from injury, Ryan was kept in the starting lineup in place of Williams. Oh, So Close The Wildcats have finished one game under.500 in each of the past three seasons, going in , two years ago and last season, just missing out on postseason consideration. Northwestern is seeking its first postseason appearance since the season when the Cats went to the NIT. Cats on the Tube Northwestern will have as many as four nationally televised regular-season game this season. The Cats faced Miami (Fla.) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on ESPN2 at home Nov. 28 before they opened the Big Ten portion of the schedule Jan. 3 on ESPNU at Penn State. After an ESPN2 game at home with Illinois Feb. 7, the Cats have one more Feb. 28 on ESPN2 at home against Indiana. More could come during the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. Hardy Joins Coaching Staff Northwestern lost one of its top assistant coaches over the summer in Craig Robinson who accepted the head coaching job at Brown. But coach Carmody didn t have to look far to find a replacement as he brought on former Wildcat great Tavaras Hardy, who still holds the record for most career games played at Northwestern. Hardy, a two-time all-big Ten selection, still holds the Northwestern record for most games played in a career with 118 and ranks in the top 20 in seven major categories. He ranks second with 113 starts, fourth with 101 blocked shots, 10th with 640 rebounds, 11th with 227 assists and 98 steals and 20th with 1,122 career points one of only 27 Wildcats to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau.

7 CARMODY INKS TWO TOP CHICAGO RECRUITS Northwestern men s basketball coach Bill Carmody is continuing his pipeline of Chicago-area recruits and further strengthened that in November with the signing of Mike Capocci (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) and Michael Thompson (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) two of the top players in the state of Illinois to National Letters of Intent to play for the Wildcats. Both will be eligible to compete beginning next season. Thompson is one of the top prospects in the state by numerous publications. He has all the tools of a point guard with good shooting range and quickness to help him thrive at the Big Ten level. Last season he averaged 19 points, seven assists and five steals as a junior at Lincoln Park High School in Chicago. First off, Michael Thompson is coming from Lincoln Park, one of the best schools and programs in Chicago, Carmody said. He has been very well-coached and has thrived in the leadership role on a team with other very good players. He s a sparkplug and brings a toughness and high basketball IQ that will help his transition into the Big Ten. Capocci also ranks in the top 10 in the state according to Chicagohoops.com. A 6-6 forward with excellent range, Capocci averaged 20 points and nine rebounds as a junior last season for Glenbard East High School in Lombard, Ill. Mike Capocci is an explosive athlete who can step out and hit long range shots, Carmody said. Like Thompson, he s highly rated in the area and has played against top competition. We re looking for Mike to step in and give us a much-needed presence on the backboards. It s also significant that both Mikes are Chicago-area guys one from the Public League and one from the suburbs. There is such great talent here and we want the best players to know that they can stay close to home and still get a top 10 education while playing in the country s best conference. With this year s freshmen and now the two Mikes, we have a collection of kids that are the foundation of a strong local recruiting base here at Northwestern. The two signings bring the total number of Chicago-area signees in the last four years to five. Thompson and Capocci join Sterling Williams (Whitney Young), Jeremy Nash (Marist) and Jeff Ryan (Glenbrook South) as the latest Chicago natives to signees in recent years. Also hailing from the Chicago area is junior transfer Jason Okrzesik (Fenwick) along with Joe Kennedy and Matt Steger, both from Loyola Academy. 11 HEAD COACH BILL CARMODY BIG TEN COACH OF THE YEAR Head coach Bill Carmody has been labeled the best offensive coach in college basketball by Sports Illustrated as well as the second-most innovative coach in the nation. And in recent seasons SI s college basketball writers voted him one of the 15 best coaches in the college game a list that included only one other Big Ten coach. His Division I peers have voted him as one of the five coaches they would most like to see give an offensive clinic. There is no doubt about it Carmody is established as one of the stars in the college coaching profession. If there were questions about Carmody s coaching ability when he first arrived in Evanston, he has put them to rest. During the past six years the Wildcats have won 82 games, the best six-year win total in the program s history, and the 2005 senior class graduated with 57 victories which is more than any other class in the first 100 years of the program. Northwestern has won at least 11 games in all of Carmody s seasons, a program first and the first time the Cats have reached double figures in the win column six straight seasons since In Big Ten play, Northwestern has won 30 regular-season conference games during the past five years, the most over a five-year period since (32). In Carmody s six-year tenure, the Wildcats have won 33 Big Ten regular-season games; prior to his arrival, NU had 28 conference victories in the previous 12 seasons. Carmody s teams have made Welsh-Ryan a particularly tough place for teams to visit. The Wildcats have won 10 or more home games four of the past five years, including 12 in , a program record, and nine in Northwestern has had a winning mark at Welsh-Ryan every year under Carmody after doing so just twice in the six seasons prior to his arrival. Carmody has raised the expectations at Northwestern. Nevermind that the Cats with only one departing senior on the roster in won 15 games, just the ninth time in history it has happened, or that Vedran Vukusic was a consensus third-team All-Big Ten selection. Northwestern also led the nation in assist-to-field goal ratio (.703), defeated six different Big Ten teams during the regular-season, and won a Big Ten Tournament game for the third-straight season (prior to this three-year run, NU won just one game in the first five years of the tournament s existence). Last year Carmody led NU to 14 wins, the sixthstraight double-digit win season, guided NU to a 9-4 start with a 2-0 start in the Big Ten for the first time in 23 years. Carmody mentored Vedran Vukusic to second-team all-big Ten honors as Vukusic became the first Wildcat since Evan Eschmeyer to garner all-conference honors three straight seasons. Vukusic broke NU s all-time record for career three-pointers (212) and finished fourth on the school s all-time scoring list with 1,581 points. At the same time, Mohamed Hachad was named to the Big Ten s all-defensive team while true-freshman Craig Moore was named to the all-freshman team both firsts in school history. Following the season, Carmody was voted by a panel of media as the Big Ten Coach of the Year the first time a Northwestern mentor has been honored in the 32-year history of the award. The recognition was well-deserved. Playing with just one senior on the roster, and picked to finish near the bottom of the Big Ten standings, the Wildcats ended up going 8-8 in conference play which was the best mark by an NU team since the team went 8-6. Those eight wins came against seven different Big Ten teams, the second time the program had pulled off the feat in Carmody s four years. As a result, the Cats tied for fifth place in the conference standings, their highest finish since the team also tied for fifth. Overall, the Wildcats compiled a record which left them just shy of postseason eligibility. That same year Jitim Young was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection the first under Carmody while Vukusic was a third-team honoree. It marked the first time in school history the program had a first-team player joined on the All-Big Ten teams by an NU teammate. As a team, Northwestern led the Big Ten in steals per conference game (7.81), turnover margin in conference games (+5.12) and also led the conference in three-pointers made per game overall (7.07). The team set a school record with 238 steals and drained 205 treys, which is second on the school's all-time list. The Wildcats 1.32 assist-to-turnover ratio is also a school best in the time that both statistics have been kept. Carmody s impact at Northwestern was immediate. Inheriting a team that had won just five games overall and went winless in Big Ten play in , Carmody instituted the offensive system that brought so much success to Princeton, where he had spent the previous 18 seasons (including the last four as head coach). As the campaign wore on and the players began to feel more comfortable, the dividends began paying out. THE CARMODY LEDGER YEAR SCHOOL ALL CONF Princeton Princeton Princeton Princeton Northwestern Northwestern Northwestern Northwestern Northwestern Northwestern Northwestern Overall Record: Record at NU: Big Ten Record: Record at Princeton: This year Carmody led one of his youngest teams ever to a program-best 10-3 start, marking the seventhstraight season NU has recorded double-digit wins a feat not accomplished since NU entered with 33 Big Ten regular-season wins under Carmody, the most for the program in a sixyear span since (37). He also had 82 wins, the most in a six-year span in program history. Carmody has wins over nine of the other 10 Big Ten teams, and it took him 51 games to get to that mark. The only school he does not have a win over is Ohio State. Six of NU s eight most prolific three-point shooting teams have come under Carmody. NU connected on 201 three-pointers this past season and 186 treys during the season. In , NU knocked down 205 three-pointers, which is second all-time at the school behind the 209 they hit in In the last five-plus years the Wildcats have recorded a overall record at Welsh- Ryan Arena, including a mark in Big Ten play. The Wildcats have reached double figures in home wins in four of the past five years including a school-record 12 in which was a first for the program. The win over Minnesota on Jan. 20 gave NU six straight wins over the Gophers, a feat not accomplished by the Wildcats since the 1930 s. The Wildcats also swept a two-game season series from Purdue last season for the first time since 1951 and have now won five-straight over the Boilers, the longest NU winning streak in the series history. NU has played 17 home games against ranked opponents during Carmody s six seasons as head coach, and the Wildcats have won eight of them (listed below). NU has defeated a ranked opponent in each of Carmody s first six seasons. Taking it a step further, four of the last six wins have come by 10 or more. 12/27/00 NU 63, #16/15 USC 61 2/10/01 NU 69, #14/16Iowa 61 1/19/02 NU 63, #17/15 Iowa 50 2/12/03 NU 78, #-/25 Purdue 67 1/14/04 NU 70, #25/25 Illinois 60 2/7/04 NU 69, #14/11 Wisconsin 51 1/26/05 NU 75, #23/24 Iowa 74 (ot) 2/8/06 NU 51, #19/19 Iowa 48
