4 OUTLOOK Some news, notes and other goodies to keep in mind as Northwestern prepares for the men s swimming and diving season... Though the Wildcats admittedly are entering a rebuilding year, Northwestern has enjoyed a run of success during the past half decade that is unparalled in the program s modern history. NU has won more individual and relay Big Ten titles than any other conference school during that timespan, and has placed in the top-12 nationally in each of the last five seasons often as the Big Ten s highest finisher in the nation. NU also won five individual NCAA championships during that timespan. Northwestern returns two All-Americans from last year, senior Eric Nilsson and sophomore Brian Kerr. Nilsson has five-career All-America accolades, four earned with relays from and one picked up as an individual in the 500 free in Kerr was a member of the Wildcats 200- and 400-free relays at last year s NCAA Championships, picking up a first-team nod with the 400 squad and an honorable mention laurel with the 200 relay. In addition to Nilsson, Northwestern returns a solid core group which scored points at last year s Big Ten Championships. Seniors Adam Beckman, John Franklin and Alex Kiaie along with sophomores Sean Mathews and Alex Tyler all earned spots in the consolation final heats during events they swam at last year s Big Ten meet. In addition to the swimmers listed above, Jake Vogel and Bryan Pinkston earned spots in bonus finals at last year s Big Ten Championships, giving them second swim experience on the big stage. Eric Nilsson already is the school record holder in the 500 free, a mark he set as a sophomore at the 2007 NCAA Championships when he finished 16th to earn an honorable mention All-America honor. Nilsson now has Kellan O Connor s 2003 record in the 200 butterfly in his sights. Nilsson was NU s top swimmer in the event last year, finishing 17th in the nation in the event and fifth in the Big Ten. After Matt Grevers, Mike Alexandrov and Kyle Bubolz swept through the program and re-wrote the record books, O Connor s mark in the 200 fly is the oldest school mark still on the books. Speaking of Matt Grevers, the 2007 graduate s performance at the Beijing Olympic Games garnered a lot of attention for NU swimming. Grevers earned two gold medals as a member of the 4x100-meter medley and 4x100-meter freestyle relays. He also won an individual silver, combining with Aaron Peirsol to form a 1-2 American sweep of the 100-meter backstroke. Grevers set an Olympic and world record during his swims, though both marks would later be broken. Grevers appeared on Oprah, the Bonnie Hunt Show and threw out the first pitch before a standing ovation at Wrigley Field. He also served as grand marshal of NU s homecoming parade. 5 OUTLOOK Following is head coach Bob Groseth s analysis of Northwestern s stroke groups entering the seasons: Sprint Freestyle: Brian Kerr returning from his All-American freshman year will lead the way. Watch for classmate Truman Liang to challenge Brian for the No. 1 spot on the team and for Chris Doman to be a factor as well. Mid-Distance Freestyle: Eric Nilsson leads the way and will be competing for Big Ten titles in the 200 and 500. Junior Chris Doman has gained tremendous experience, while sophomores Sean Mathews, Peter Park and Alex Tyler have really developed this past year and will be factors. Freshman John Frutiger shows real promise and will be a factor by year s end. All of these guys are capable of swimming the 1,650 but may be more valuable in other events. Backstroke: Senior Adam Beckman and junior Jake Vogel will carry the burden in backstroke. Both have show they are capable of scoring in both the 100 and 200 at Big Ten s. Their development will be a key factor in whether our medley relays place high at Big Ten s and qualify for NCAA s. Breaststroke: This event has the depth along with the butterfly stroke on the team. Senior John Franklin is one of the better 100 and 200 breaststrokers returning in the Big Ten. He is backed up by freshman Nathan Butler in the 100 and sophomore Alex Tyler in the 200. All of these men are capable of scoring at Big Ten s. Butterfly: Another strong event and maybe the best for Northwestern. Senior Eric Nilsson heads up this strong group. A consistent finalist in the 200 at Big Ten s, Eric missed All-America at last year s NCAA s by the slightest of margins. He is backed up by junior Bryan Pinkston, who has shown he wants to be a player this year. Sophomores Peter Park and Sean Mathews in the 200 and Chris Doman and possibly Brian Kerr in the 100 also bolster the butterfly corp. Individual Medley: This could prove to be an interesting event for Northwestern this year. While no one individual stands out at this time their are a number of swimmers who could excel in this event including seniors Adam Beckman and Eric Nilsson. Sophomores Alex Tyler and Peter Park both have shown they could be successful in the IM. Beckman in the 200 and Tyler in the 400 already have scored at Big Ten s. This could be a very fun event to watch this year. QUOTING HEAD COACH BOB GROSETH On the program s success in the last half decade... We have been fortunate these past five years to be blessed with talented and driven swimmers who have elevated our program both in the Big Ten and nationally. During that time Northwestern has won more Big Ten individual and relay Championships than any other Big Ten team. In addition we have placed in the top 12 at the NCAA Championships and again placed higher in relays and won more individual championships than any other Big Ten team. Most of those years Northwestern was the Big Ten s highest finishing team. On NU s smaller squad size in As always we will be stressing our relay performance at both the Big Ten s and NCAA s. This truly is going to be one of those rebuilding years. Our strategy is to use the positive experience of the juniors and seniors to maintain the success and the development of the freshman and sophomores to lay the groundwork for the future of the program. We have picked up a lot of fans of Northwestern swimming and I hope they become as excited about the development of the team over the next few years as we are on the coaching staff. On who is poised for a breakout season... Look out for that sophomore class. Peter Park, Sean Mathews and Alex Tyler have already made contributions as freshmen and Truman Liang has started this year on a mission. Also, watch the development of transfer diver Kalister Harmon. He is doing some amazing things in practice already and will surprise his Big Ten opponents. If Bryan Pinkston s performance in practice is any indication look for him to have a breakout year in the butterfly. On the relays in Unlike the past few years there is no relay that stands out. We will be solid but not outstanding in all the relays. At the end of the year we could be pretty good or one man short depending the the development of the younger swimmers. We will be working a lot of combinations to give ourselves the best chance to score high at Big Ten s and perhaps find a way to the NCAA Championships in a relay. On the return of former volunteer assistant coach Jarod Schroeder as a full-time assistant... As expected Jarod stepped right in without missing a beat. Many of our swimmers already were familiar with Jarod, and Jarod was familiar with the program. His reputation within the state and the region gives him instant credibility with recruits in the Midwest. His experience as interim head coach at Maryland is like having two head coaches on our staff. I am excited about Jarod s contributions already and know that Northwestern s future looks bright with him on board. On Matt Grevers Olympic performance and its impact on Northwestern s program... Matt s performance this past Olympic Games has brought even more recognition to Northwestern s program. It s one thing as a coach to be able to talk to a recruit and say that you can take them to the highest level and another to have the example that Matt has provided as proof of that statement. Matt s performance in Beijing validated Northwestern s swimming BOB GROSETH program. On returning All-American and senior Eric Nilsson... Eric has been a very important part of the success we have had the past few years. He has made himself a major factor in our success by filling out relays that have placed high at the NCAA Championships and won Big Ten Championships. In addition Eric has placed individually at the NCAA s in the 500 free. This year Eric will be shooting to win an individual Big Ten Championship and place in three events at the NCAA s including making a big final in at least one. With the development of some of our younger swimmers Eric could also be part of some Relays that could make it to the NCAA s. Eric has lived in the shadows of some great Northwestern swimmers these past few years. This is his year to shine. He has contended and been in position to win all the events he will be swimming this year. Winning one or more of those titles would be a great way to finish an outstanding career at Northwestern. On the Big Ten race this season... Michigan has emerged as the top team in the Big Ten this year. They will be followed in no special order by Minnesota, Indiana and Ohio State. Expect Indiana s diving to be a big factor among those three. Purdue has a strong team and is probably next along with Wisconsin. Northwestern will be contending with the remaining teams as the best of the rest this year. 32

6 WILDCATS ARE CHAMPIONS It had been 47 years since an NCAA champion in men s swimming resided in Evanston, but with a school-record in the 100 backstroke finals at the 2005 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Matt Grevers ended that drought with the best race of his career. Grevers qualified first for the final heat by defeating 2004 Olympian Ryan Lochte of Florida by.36 seconds with a time of 46.01, at the time his personal best and a school record. The victory also brought back to Northwestern a national title for a program with a storied tradition at the national championship meet. The Wildcats have won 28 event national titles in their history, ranking 14th all-time among their collegiate brethren. Al Schwartz was the first swimmer in the nation to win three individual national championships in one year (1930), and has been joined by just 23 others in the last 77 years. In the nine years from 1924 to 1933, NU captured an astounding 16 national championships. In the last three seasons, the Wildcats have returned to their winning ways of the past. Led by the two most decorated swimmers in Northwestern history, Grevers and Mike Alexandrov, NU has won five NCAA titles over that three-year stretch. At the 2007 NCAA Championships, the Wildcats won three gold medals third most of any school in the country and set a pair of NCAA records in the process. Grevers became the second Wildcat to win a national championship in three-consecutive years with two victories in the 100 back ( ) and a crown in the 200 back (2007), joining Wally Colbath, who won the 1-meter diving championship from Those two feats also mark the last and most recent times Northwestern as a program has stood atop the medal podium in three-consecutive seasons. In 2007, Alexandrov took down a 10-year-old NCAA record in the 100 breast with a time of 51.56, then joined Grevers and teammates Kyle Bubolz and Bruno Barbic to break another NCAA standard with a goldmedal winning time of 3:04.40 in the 400 medley relay. Both of those records still stand entering the season marked the third year in program history with three or more national championships, with the other two coming in 1930 and graduate MIKE ALEXANDROV waited until his senior year to win gold at the NCAA Championships, but set NCAA records with both his individual win in the 100 breast and in NU s 400 medley relay victory in Prior to winning three medals at the Beijing Olympic Games, 2007 graduate MATT GREVERS was the first Wildcat in 77 years to win three individual national championships. Northwestern s 400 MEDLEY RELAY set an NCAA record in 2007, becoming the second Wildcat relay to win a national championship. 7 HEAD COACH BOB GROSETH BOB GROSETH 20th Season Head Coach GROSETH AT-A-GLANCE Born: August 18, 1944 Alma Mater: Indiana University, 1967 Degree: Bachelor s Degree (Indiana, 67) History and Physical Education 34 Bob Groseth returns for his 20th season at the helm of the Northwestern men s swimming program in the midst of a golden age of swimming at the school. The Wildcats have finished in the top-12 or better in the nation in each of the past five seasons, winning five NCAA titles and 30 Big Ten Championships in that time frame. Northwestern currently is one of the most exciting programs on the national stage, and is enjoying success unparalled since the Wildcats earned a quartet of national championships in the 1920 s and 30 s. The 2008 campaign saw the Wildcats prove outside prognosticators wrong with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Following the graduations of future 2008 Olympians Matt Grevers and Mike Alexandrov in 2007, conventional wisdom said Northwestern could not keep up its current pace, but the Cats four-man NCAA contingent placed just one spot behind 15-man Minnesota at the national meet, winning 13 All-America accolades. In 2007, Northwestern won three NCAA Championships, set two NCAA records and finished in sixth place as a team to record the best finish for the Wildcats in the modern era. At the Big Ten Championships, Northwestern won 10 individual conference titles, nearly double the total of its next competitor. Groseth was named 2007 Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. In 2006, all four of Northwestern s participating relays at the NCAA Championships qualified for the championship heats for the first time ever to lead the Wildcats to a 10th-place team finish, and Grevers won his second-straight NCAA title in the 100 back. Those accomplishments came on the heels of an eighth-place showing in Groseth was tabbed NCAA Co- and Big Ten Coach of the Year following the 2005 campaign. In the past five seasons, Groseth s teams have produced a staggering 107 All-America honors. In 2005, Grevers won the national title in the 100 back, and Mike Alexandrov picked up a silver and bronze medal in the two breaststroke events NU s first NCAA medals since Since 2005, NU has eight NCAA Championship medals. In 34 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Groseth has produced more than 65 swimmers who have participated at the NCAA Championships, including world record-setter Scott McCadam, World Games gold medalist Eric Hansen, Olympic gold medalist Grevers and NCAA record holders Grevers, Alexandrov, Bruno Barbic and Kyle Bubolz. Northwestern has won an incredible 30 Big Ten championships over the last five seasons under Groseth, averaging six per season. In 2005 alone the Cats produced seven Big Ten champions the most of any conference school. In addition to four individual titles, NU s 200 free and 400 medley relays set Big Ten records en route to championships, while the 200 medley relay also earned a title. The Wildcats repeated that feat in 2006, this time getting individual titles in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back from Grevers, a crown in the 100 fly from Kyle Bubolz and a gold in the 200 breast from Alexandrov. In the relays, the Cats captured titles in the 200 free and 400 medley to make it a total of seven for the second-straight year. In 2007, Northwestern blew away that total with 10 Big Ten championships, nearly doubling the total of the next-best school (Michigan with six). Coaching Experience: Fenwick High School, Head Coach Cincinnati, Head Coach Tulane, Head Coach Iowa State, Head Coach Northwestern, 1989-present Head Coach BOB GROSETH has coached Northwestern to five-straight top-12 finishes at the NCAA Championships. A big part of that run was 2007 graduate Matt Grevers (foreground), who won three medals at the 2008 Olympic Games.

8 COACHING/SUPPORT STAFF Groseth has long been a respected coach on the national level. In 1992, he instructed some of the nation s top distance swimmers at the U.S. National Distance Camp. In 1993, he took the U.S. Junior National Team to compete in Paris, France, and in 2007 was an assistant with the USA s World University Games team. In 2008, he earned the John Newman Award for contributions to Illinois swimming. He was the recipient of the American Swimming Coaches Association Bob Ousley Award for contributions to the sport in Following the season, Groseth was honored as the recipient of the Richard E. Steadman Award by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Prior to coming to NU, Groseth coached 10 seasons at Iowa State, compiling a dual-meet record. Under his tutelage, 16 Cyclones combined to win 41 Big Eight Conference titles. Groseth twice earned Big Eight Coach of the Year accolades. Groseth began his coaching career in 1974 at Cincinnati, where he compiled a 21-9 record in three seasons. In 1977, he left for Tulane, where he led the Green Wave to a 4-6 dual-meet mark and second place at the Metro Seven Championship. NU has earned fivestraight NCAA top-12 finishes, a staggering 107 All-America honors, 30 Big Ten titles, five individual NCAA crowns and two NCAA recordsetting performances both which still stand today in the last five years under BOB GROSETH. A Hinsdale, Ill., native, Groseth attended Hinsdale Township High School before enrolling at Indiana, where he was a student-assistant coach. Groseth accepted his first coaching position at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Ill., where his teams won seven consecutive Catholic League titles in addition to four National Catholic Championships. During his stay at Fenwick, Groseth produced 28 All-America swimmers. In 1982, he was inducted into the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame. Groseth earned bachelor s degrees in history and physical education from Indiana in He resides in Evanston. JAROD SCHROEDER First Season Assistant Coach Jarod Schroeder, who served as the interim head coach at Maryland in, joined Northwestern as an assistant coach prior to the season. The move for Schroeder was essentially a homecoming. The 1995 graduate of Northern Illinois served as the head age group coach with the Northwestern Aquatic Swim Association (NASA) beginning in 2000 while also working as a volunteer assistant with both NU s men s and women s varsity programs. In addition to his duties with the Wildcats which continued until 2006, Schroeder served as the head coach of the New Trier Swim Club beginning in While at New Trier, he developed Olympic Trials qualifiers, U.S. Open finalists and U.S. National finalists, and was named the Illinois Swimming Coach of the year on two occasions. Schroeder then became the assistant coach for the Terrapins prior to the season, serving as the primary coach for the sprint group and placing three athletes in the top eight at the ACC championships. He assumed the role of interim head coach for the campaign. After finishing a career at Northern Illinois in which he served as team captain and was a two-time Illinois Collegiate Swimmer of the Year, Schroeder was elected to the Northern Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in He was a three-time Mid-West Collegiate Conference Swimmer of the Year, earned seven individual conference titles and set three conference records. He was co-captain of the 1999 Pan-American Games team, where he was a double silver medalist. The previous year, he was a member of the 1998 USA Goodwill Games Team. Following his time as a student-athlete, Schroeder took on volunteer assistant coaching jobs at his alma mater and the University of Wisconsin.
