The Badgers will go head-to-head with nine other league teams over the course of three days at Purdue s Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The meet will consist of a preliminaries session each morning at 11 a.m. and a finals session for the same events at 6 p.m. Last time out The Badgers closed out their dual meet season with a pair of losses in the Big Ten Tri Duals in Minneapolis, Minn., Jan Minnesota defeated the UW, , while the Badgers also fell to Purdue, Previewing the championships UW enters the Big Ten Championships unranked in the CSCAA Top 25 but ranked 17th according to Swim- Rankings.com. In all, seven of the league s 10 teams are among the top 25 in at least one of the major rankings. The Badgers return nine athletes who scored at last year s Big Ten championships, including seniors Scott Rice and Kyle Sorensen, who each scored top-10 finishes in six different events. As was the case in the women s conference meet last week, numerous Big Ten records are expected to fall at the men s championships. Already this season, Rice has set new school records in the 100 fly (46.54) and 200 fly (1:42.53), while Phil Davies clocked a new school standard in the 100 freestyle (43.50). Rice enters the meet as the Badgers top championship threat, leading the conference and ranking fourth nationally in the 200 fly. He also is a close second to Michigan s Chris Brady in the 100 fly and ranks fourth in the league in the 400 IM. Davies, meanwhile, is ranked fourth in the conference in the 100 freestyle and fifth among league swimmers in the 50 freestyle entering the meet. (South) Big Ten Tri Duals Highlighting the action were senior Scott Rice and junior Derrick O Donnell. Rice was a member of the third-place 200 medley relay team, as well as a second-place finisher in both the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley. O Donnell picked up the lone win for the Badgers on the day in the 100 backstroke. Freshman Brett Nagle kicked off the individual competition for Wisconsin, taking third in the 1000 freestyle in 9: His time was the fastest for the Badgers this season. In the 50 freestyle, Sorensen took sixth in 21.02, Davies placed eighth in 21.09, sophomore Conner Andrews finished 10th in and Lengfeld was 11th in O Donnell claimed the Badgers only win in the 100 yard backstroke. His time of was enough for first, while Stipek and senior Mike Hopkins took fourth and fifth with times of and 52.11, respectively. The Badgers picked up fifth- and 10th-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke as Thompson and Koenig finished with times of 2:06.99 and 2: Rice was next for the Badgers, finishing second in the 100 butterfly with a time of Junior Steven Wiesner, O Donnell and Andrews finished in the ninth through 11th positions in the race with times of 51.50, and The Badgers had four competitors in the 200 freestyle who took the ninth through 12th positions. Nagle placed ninth in 1:43.57, followed by Lengfeld in 1:44.56, Thompson in 1:44.79 and freshman Wes Lagerhausen in 1: Rice completed his individual competition on the day with a second-place finish with a time of 4:02.63 in the 400 individual medley. Hopkins placed sixth in 4:06.59, senior Ben Bruce took 11th in 4:13.81 and Nagle was 12th with a time of 4: The Badgers ended the meet taking fourth and fifth place in the 400 freestyle relay. (West) honors and awards Big ten swimmer of the week N/A Big ten DIVER of the week Caleb Percevecz Oct. 14 Caleb Percevecz Nov. 4 In all, 10 UW athletes posted a total of 19 NCAA qualifying marks in 12 different events during the course of the three-day meet. The Badgers saw three school records fall while in Austin, with senior Scott Rice toppling the previous UW marks in both the 100 and 200 butterfly. Rice s time of 1:42.53 in the 200 fly obliterated the record he previously held in the event and earned him an automatic berth in the NCAA championships. Also, junior Phil Davies put himself atop the school s all-time list with a swim of in the 100 freestyle. Rice actually lowered the school record in both events twice, in each case setting a new mark in the prelims before lowering it in the event finals. In the finals of the 200 fly, Rice battled Arizona s Alexander Tipton for a runner-up finish in an outstanding race. Tipton took the event by just one-tenth of a second. In addition to NCAA marks in both butterfly events, Rice also earned NCAA consideration with his time of 1:46.65 in the 200 individual medley and was part of the Badgers teams that scored NCAA B cuts in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. Davies, meanwhile, was part of all five UW relays that earned NCAA consideration, including both medley relays and the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays. Davies also posted an NCAA B cut in the 50 freestyle, meaning he will receive NCAA consideration in seven different events. Also posting NCAA B qualifying times in individual events were freshman Brett Nagle in the 500 freestyle (4:21.83) and senior Mike Hopkins in the 200 backstroke (1:44.78). Along with Davies, Kyle Sorensen had his hand in all three of the Badgers freestyle relays, with the duo joined by Conner Andrews and Wes Lagerhausen in the 200 and 400 free relays. Nagle and Kyle Thompson were the other half of UW s entry in the 800 free relay. Northwestern DUAL The Badgers evened their overall record (2-2) and record in Big Ten Conference duals (1-1) with a win over Northwestern last Thursday (Nov. 13) at the UW Natatorium. The victory, which came after the Badgers claimed wins in 12 of the meet s 16 events, snapped a four-meet losing streak against the Wildcats.

4 In total, 10 different Badgers won an event, either individually or as part of a relay team, for the Badgers. Senior Scott Rice continued his winning ways for the Badgers by winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.72 and then claiming the 100-yard butterfly with a time of Rice also contributed to a UW win in the 200 medley relay, combining with junior Derrick O Donnell, junior Dan Koening and junior Phil Davies to take the race in a season-best time of 1: O Donnell also picked up a pair of individual wins in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.94) and in the 100 backstroke (50.58). The Badgers made it 2-for-2 in the relay events, with the foursome of senior Kyle Sorensen, sophomore Fraser Roberts, freshman Cole Scarbrough and sophomore Conner Andrews winning in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1: Sorensen also won the 50 free (21.01) and took third in both the 100 freestyle (46.27) and 100 butterfly (51.35). Davies captured first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of It was the second time Davies had won the event this year and matched the team s top time for the season. Freshman Brett Nagle was victorious for the fourth time this year, winning the 1000-yard freestyle. It was his second win in the event, finishing in a time of 9: The Badgers also swept the two diving events, with sophomore Caleb Percevecz taking the 1-meter and 3-meter events. After finishing the events in times of and 1:50.28, respectively, Rice upped his season win total to seven in just three meets. Sorensen garnered his first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.00, while Davies picked his up grabbed his in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of The two then teamed up with freshman Wes Lagerhausen (Fontana, Wis.) and sophomore Conner Andrews (Nashotah, Wis.) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay race with a mark of 1: Wisconsin s other top finish came in the 500-yard freestyle. The quartet of freshman Wes Lagerhausen (Fontana, Wis.), junior Phil Davies (Rye, N.Y.), sophomore Conner Andrews (Nashotah, Wis.) and senior Kyle Sorensen (Palatine, Ill.) took first with a time of 3: UW-Milwaukee DUAL Wisconsin swept all 12 events as it opened its season with a win over UW-Milwaukee. Senior Scott Rice and junior Derrick O Donnell each won two races on the evening. Rice won the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard IM, while O Donnell captured first in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard breaststroke. Two diving events took place on Friday and sophomore Caleb Percevecz won them both. He won on the 1-meter board with a score of and on the 3-meter board with a The freshman class did not disappoint in its collegiate debut as three of its members won events. Brett Nagle won the 1000-yard freestyle while Wes Lagerhausen won the 200-yard freestyle and Jeff Morries captured the 500-yard freestyle. Other indvidual winners on the evening were senior Kyle Sorensen (100 Free) and sophomore Conner Andrews (50 free), In the 400-yard medley relay, Andrews, senior Nick Fulton, junior Steven Wiesner and freshman Chris Nemeth teamed up to take first. The other relay race on the night was an exhibition in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The race had an interesting twist as each Wisconsin foursome represented a class. On this night, the sophomores prevailed as Andrews, Fraser Roberts, Luke Lengfeld and Kyle Thompson won the race. NOTEWORTHY The Badgers entered the season with one of the nation s top recruiting classes. The six-member class was ranked ninth according to CollegeSwimming.com. The class was ranked the highest among any Big Ten school, which is especially notable because five teams in the conference earned top-20 marks. Lagerhausen and Nagle are the top-ranked recruits as they were 13th and 16th, respectively. 12 members of the men s swimming team represented Wisconsin as qualifiers for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. Per Meet 1 Texas Stanford Arizona Tennessee Auburn Michigan Cal Ohio State Florida Georgia Minnesota Indiana Virginia Princeton USC Purdue Wisconsin Harvard Florida State Louisville UNC Alabama Penn State LSU Kentucky head coach eric hansen X Eric Hansen, a Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year, accomplished United States national team coach and former member of the U.S. national team, begins his 10th year as Wisconsin s men s and women s swimming head coach. Among his many accomplishments, Hansen has led the women s program to seven top-20 finishes at the NCAA championships and has revitalized the men s program. His men s and women s programs own a combined dual record of in Hansen s nine years as coach. Between the men s and women s programs, he has coached 24 athletes who have earned a combined 31 individual Big Ten titles, as well as another 11 relay crowns. The UW women s team won a total of 13 individual conference championships in the 18 seasons before Hansen arrived. In the nine seasons since, the Badgers have claimed 41 titles. Hansen s coaching can be measured on a national scale, as well, with 45 of his athletes (27 women, 18 men) earning a total of 249 All-America honors during his tenure at the UW. That also includes a pair of Olympic athletes (Adam Mania and gold medalist Carly Piper). In , Hansen guided the Badger women to an unblemished record in Big Ten Conference duals for the eighth-consecutive season (41-0 in that span) and an 8-1 overall record. A total of seven swimmers earned All-America distinction at the NCAA championships, as the Badgers finished 22nd. Following the season, Hansen saw an astounding 29 athletes with UW ties compete in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, including several coached by Hansen as part of the Wisconsin Aquatics team. At the 2007 NCAA Championships, the women s team scored 36 points and finished tied for 24th place.the men s team also returned to the NCAA championships and finished 29th. In 2006, the women s team qualified a school-record 11 athletes for the NCAA championships and finished in ninth place, best in Wisconsin history. In 2005, Hansen guided former Badgers Carly Piper and Tim Liebhold to national titles. Piper claimed the 400-meter freestyle title at the World Championship trials, while Liebhold captured first in the 200-meter IM at the U.S. Championships. Before the start of the 2004 season, Hansen s team had 10 of its members qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials, where Piper earned a spot on the U.S. team. At the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, Piper went on to win a gold medal as part of the 800-meter freestyle relay team that broke a 17 year-old record in the event. Mania, meanwhile, competed in Athens as a member of the Polish team. Later in the year, Hansen led the women s and men s teams to a 10th-place and 16th-place finish, respectively, at the NCAA championships. In his first year at Wisconsin, Hansen led the Badger women to their then-best NCAA finish in 11th place. The season saw the Badger women tie for their highest finish at the Big Ten championships (second), and subsequently, Hansen was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Prior to Wisconsin, Hansen spent three years as an assistant coach at Arizona, mentoring six national champions, 11 All-Americans and numerous Pac-10 champions. He also spent one year as an assistant coach at Florida, where he coached seven All-Americans. From , the Sioux City, Iowa, native was the head coach of the Phoenix Swim Club, coaching two world record holders, four American record holders and five members of the U.S. national team. A nationally-recognized coach, Hansen continues to be very active with the U.S. national program. In 2006, Hansen was part of the staff of two national teams, serving as the men s head coach for the World Short Course Championships in Shanghai and as a men s assistant coach for the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, British Columbia. In addition to leading the Pan American squad in the summer of 2003, he also served as the U.S. men s coach at the FINA Short Course World Championships in Moscow in 2002 and was an assistant coach at the 1994 World Championships in Rome. There, he coached two gold and two silver medalists. A member of the U.S. national team from 1987 to 1992, Hansen served as captain of the U.S. team for the 1991 World University Games. He also was the 1990 U.S. champion in the 100 backstroke. As a collegian, Hansen was a six-time All-American at Iowa State and was named Big 8 Conference swimmer of the year in 1987 and He also was tabbed as Iowa State s athlete of the year in Hansen was inducted into the Iowa State University Hall of Fame in 2004 and was then inducted into the Siouxland Hall of Fame in the spring of Hansen graduated from Iowa State in 1988 with a bachelor s degree in exercise science.
