The Volunteers won eight events, including four of the five relays, and set an American record as they claimed the school s 11th runner-up finish. The Vols kicked off the meet in dramatic fashion by establishing an American record in the 200 medley relay in the first event of the meet. The foursome of Gilliam, McDonnell, Hoggatt and Owen reached the wall in a time of 1:25.37 to better the mark of 1:25.76 held by former Vols Craig Gilliam, Jeremy Linn, Jeff Elder and Adam Engle. The Vols had been aiming for the American record since the beginning of the season and produced an outstanding race to achieve their goal. While the 200 medley relay was expected, UT was also able to produce an unexpected victory in the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet of Simpson, Bree, Zane DeWitz and Tannhauser captured the program s first SEC title in that event since The Vol divers also scored points on the abbreviated first night of competition as Shannon Roy finished fifth in one-meter diving while Gabi Chereches and Jake Dorsey finished 10th and 14th, respectively. The second night of competition at the SEC Championships was highlighted by UT divers Roy and Chereches claiming the top two spots in the three-meter competition and the 200 freestyle relay squad winning the Vols third relay title of the meet. Roy won the three-meter diving title with 610 points while Chereches finished second with points. McDonnell won the SEC 100 breaststroke championship with a time of to defeated a few heavily favored opponents. The UT junior headed up a talented breaststroke trio for the Vols as classmate Chris Stewart finished fifth and Bree was 13th in the event. Another impressive performance was delivered by Hoggatt in the 100 butterfly. Hoggatt, a junior who did not compete at the SEC meet last season, raced to a second-place finish with a time of 47.28, just.15 off the winning time. Joel Shapiro finished 12th in the event.
