2 Men s Season Outlook Coming off a Southeastern Conference championship and a top-five finish at the NCAA Championships, Auburn head swimming and diving coach Richard Quick is looking ahead to the season with high hopes for his young team. A er losing Olympic gold medalist Cesar Cielo a er last season, along with the standout senior class of Alexei Puninski, Sco Goodrich and Luke Weniger, the younger members of the Tiger squad will have to step up, but Quick is excited about the opportunities the season holds. I like where our men s team is, we have a chance to be a be er team than we were last year, said Quick. I think we are a li le more balanced in our events and have a li le more quality depth. While Quick sees a lot of potential in the development of the sophomore class, the addition of Olympians Ma Targe and Jakob Andkjaer back to the squad should help with leadership and talent at the top. We have some terrific swimmers on the team this year with Ma Target, a finalist in the Olympic Games, and Olympian Jakob Andkjaer, said Quick. But, the thing I m looking for the most is going to make a big difference with this team is the development of the sophomore class. They are going to be the swing class; if they develop into NCAA level major scoring class, we re going to have a very good team. I m pleased with their development at this point. The sophomore class includes Kohlton Norys, Adam Klein, Andrew Mitchell and Robert Looney, all of whom earned All- America honors as freshmen. Another key to the team s success is junior Tyler McGill, a finalist from the 2008 Olympic Trials. McGill and Targe will serve as team captains this season. Tyler stepped up and got fourth in the Olympic trials in 100-meter bu erfly, which was a big swim for him in the biggest meet of the year, said Quick. We need to continue to see that kind of maturity come into the sophomore class, like it did with Tyler last year. With all the success the team experienced at the Olympics and Olympic Trials, Quick hopes his team can keep that drive alive as they continue working into the 2009 championship season. I would like to think that our team can see, based on the results of all the swimmers who have been associated with Auburn University swimming and based upon their success at the Olympic games, that they have an opportunity here as an undergraduate to reach their full potential and live their dreams as individuals and as a team, said Quick. FREESTYLE Once again, Auburn will be among the more dominant teams in the country in the sprint freestyle events with the return of Targe (who won silver and bronze medals at the Olympics) and Andkjaer, and the addition of South African Olympian Gideon Louw. Also expected to contend in the sprinting events are Kohlton Norys, Steven Scheren and freshman Karl Krug. We have a very good core of sprint freestylers and I think our tradition of Auburn excellence in sprinting will be maintained, said Quick. Assistant coach Bre Hawke, who spent the summer as an assistant coach with the Brazilian Olympic Team, agrees with Quick and is excited to get to work with his sprinting group. People might expect us to step backwards losing Cesar Cielo, Alexei Puninski and Sco Goodrich, but I don t think they realize how strong our team is with the addition of those Olympic athletes. We are in a very good position on the men s side, said Hawke. With Ma Targe, Jakob Andkjaer and Gideon Louw on the team this season, we have a great deal of experience along with our solid core of Kohlton Norys and Steve Scheren from last season. Louw, who was a junior college national champion and an Olympian for South Africa, is expected to make an immediate impact with the team. The biggest newcomer is Gideon Louw, he was an Olympian and is a very fine swimmer who is developing rapidly and he can help our already strong sprinter contingent, said Quick. In the distance freestyles, Auburn will rely on junior Will Dove and sophomore Robert Looney. Neither advanced to finals last season at NCAAs, but Quick sees that Auburn senior Matt Targett prepares to take off during the Olympic Games in Beijing, China changing very soon. Distance and middle distance freestyle is an area where we are most improved in, said Quick. Our best swimmers in that area are Will Dove and Robert Looney and I think both of those guys are real close to busting into big time swimmers. BACKSTROKE In the backstroke, Auburn loses experienced national team member Sco Goodrich, but returns junior Pascal Wollach and sophomore Kohlton Norys, who both performed well at their respective Olympic trials last summer. Backstroke should be a strong area for us because we have Kohlton Norys returning, who last year did a very fine job and is developing so rapidly, said Quick. We have swimmers that without a doubt can score significantly in the NCAAs like Pascal Wollach, Jordan Anderson, Max Murphy, Andrew Mitchell, and transfer Jared White. It should be a very good event for us. Norys, while only a sophomore, will lead the group as he is the lone returning scorer from last year s NCAA Championships. Wollach barely missed out on a finals appearance a year ago, finishing 17th overall in the 100 back. BREASTSTROKE Similar to the quick development of Norys in the backstroke, the Auburn breaststroke core experienced a similar AUBURN SWIMMING AND DIVING

3 Men s Season Outlook situation last year when senior David Maras went down with an injury late in the season. The absence of Maras in the lineup forced the Tigers to look to the younger breaststrokers to step up and take on larger roles, particularly in relays. The opportunity paid off as Michael Silva, then a sophomore, stepped up and won the SEC title in the 100 breast. Adam Klein, then a freshman, filled a similar role in the 200-yard event, taking second at SECs. Michael Silva and Adam Klein are the heart of our breaststroke, said Quick. Michael will be taking care of the speed portion of that, the 50 and the 100, while Adam Klein being the 200 down to the 100. We have to improve Adam s speed and Mike s 200 ability so they can be viable in both of the breaststroke events. Both Silva and Klein are returning All- Americans a er posting identical 15thplace finishes in their respective events last year at the NCAA Championships. BUTTERFLY Along with the sprint freestyle, the Auburn bu erfliers should be among the strongest in the country. Led by Olympians Targe and Andkjaer, the dynamic duo will add strength at the top of a deep core that already included Olympic Trials finalist Tyler McGill, Jordan Anderson, Robert Looney and Andrew Mitchell. We have outstanding 100 bu erfliers with Tyler McGill, Ma Target, Andrew Mitchell and Jakob Andkjaer coming back, said Quick. I think our 100 butterfly is going to be very good and I think our 200 bu erfly will be very good as well with Tyler McGill and Robert Looney in the mix. Auburn swept the 100 bu erfly last season at SECs, taking the top three spots. McGill, Mitchell, Andkjaer and Targe are all returning All-Americans for Auburn in the two events. Also adding to AU s depth in the event is the return of Logan Madson. He sat out most of last season and did not compete at SECs or NCAAs, but had a semifinal showing at the Olympic Trials over the summer. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY The individual medley events have been a tough area for the Tigers the past few seasons, but with sophomores Mitchell and Looney, along with junior McGill, making up the core, the staff sees a lot of opportunity for development and improvement. I think our individual medley was one of our weaker areas last year and we have acknowledged that with our athletes and they know what that area is, whether it is the bu erfly, backstroke or breaststroke, said assistant coach Richard Long. We have put our focus towards that and have taken our strong individuals in each event and paired them up with weaker ones to help us improve. I think our individual medley will be much stronger this year. Auburn did not score any points in either IM distance at NCAAs last year, but still saw some glimpses of promise as Mitchell, McGill and Silva all advanced to the championship final in the 200 IM at SECs. LEADERSHIP The intangible that Quick sees benefitting the Tigers the most this season is leadership at the top. With three Olympians on the squad, along with a strong group of upperclassmen, he sees this as an opportunity that most swimmers do not get to take advantage of. The leadership is in great hands with Ma Target and Tyler McGill as captains, supported by Jakob Andkjaer also a senior, said Quick. They are really doing a great job of showing the way and demanding excellence, but also demonstrating excellence. The thing I like about Tyler and Ma is that they each swam their best times in huge meets this past summer, with Ma in the finals of the Olympic Games and Tyler in the Olympic trials. That experience at the highest level of the sport is what Quick believes will help his team most at the end of the season. Along with Olympians Andkjaer, Louw and Targe ; the team also has three current members in McGill, Logan Madson and Looney that advanced to either the finals or semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Trials. DIVING Auburn s diving core returns intact from last season, just another year older. Dan Mazzaferro and Kelly Marx return for their junior years a er picking up All-America honors on all three boards at last year s NCAA Championships. Each picked up a top-five finish at the meet with Marx finishing fi h on the 3-meter and Mazzaferro taking fi h on the platform. The pair also earned their first SEC titles last season with Marx taking top honors on the 1-meter, followed by Mazzaferro and his platform title. Also returning for Auburn is senior Sco Morgan. On the men s side Kelly Marx and Dan Mazzaferro, both SEC champions, will lead the team, said diving coach Jeff Shaffer. Sco Morgan is a senior and has improved each year, and we also have a newcomer in Adam Godzinski. This gives us four divers that will have the opportunity to score in every event and I m excited about the men s team and the progress they have made over the summer. Godzinski is the lone newcomer to the squad, replacing Caleb Dunnichay who le following the season to transfer to Notre Dame. Adam is a li le bit stronger right now on spring board just because he hasn t had a great deal of access to platform, but his a ributes are that he is very strong and very quick, said Shaffer.
